Use a sequence of checks, not a single “AI detector.” Preserve the best copy you can find, trace its provenance and earliest appearances, test whether the claimed time and place fit, and inspect frames and audio for inconsistencies. Content Credentials or a signed C2PA record can document where a file came from and how it was edited, but they do not prove that the event or caption is true. A detector score or a visual oddity is only supporting evidence. If the source cannot be established or the evidence conflicts, label the clip unverified rather than guessing.
What is the difference between AI-generated, AI-edited, manipulated and out-of-context video?
These labels describe different problems, so identifying the right one matters. “AI-generated” means most or all of the visible or audible content was synthesized. “AI-edited” means a camera recording was changed with an AI tool, such as face replacement, object removal, voice cloning or generative extension. “Manipulated” is broader and includes conventional editing, splicing, speed changes or misleading crops. “Real but out of context” describes genuine footage paired with the wrong date, location, event or caption.
- AI-generated: the scene, people, speech or motion were created by a model rather than captured as shown.
- AI-edited: a real recording contains a synthetic or altered portion.
- Manipulated: editing changes meaning without necessarily using AI.
- Out of context: the file may be authentic, but the claim attached to it is not.
- Unverified: available evidence is insufficient to establish origin or context.
A clip can fit more than one category. For example, a genuine 2022 news video may be conventionally edited, then reposted in 2026 with an AI-generated voice-over and a false claim about a current event.

Start with the strongest available evidence. Reposts, screenshots and messaging-app forwards often remove metadata, lower resolution and obscure the original upload.

- Save the highest-quality file. Download the original when the platform permits it. Keep the downloaded file unchanged and make a working copy for analysis.
- Record the post details. Note the exact post URL, account name, caption, upload time shown by the platform, visible watermark, hashtags and any linked source.
- Capture surrounding context. Save screenshots of the profile, replies and quoted posts, but do not treat screenshots as the original evidence.
- Do not re-export unnecessarily. Editing, screen-recording or converting the file can remove metadata and provenance signals. If you must convert it for a tool, retain the untouched original.
Preservation does not authenticate a clip; it gives you a reproducible starting point and lets another person repeat your checks.
What can Content Credentials or C2PA provenance prove?
A valid, cryptographically signed Content Credentials (C2PA) manifest can record a capture or generation tool, timestamps and subsequent edits. It establishes information about a file’s origin and transformation history when the manifest remains intact. NIST (2024), the Canadian Cyber Centre (2025), Microsoft Research (2026), Microsoft Learn and the OpenAI Help Center describe provenance as evidence about the file, not a guarantee about the truth of the depicted event.
How to interpret a valid manifest
- It may show which application created the asset and which operations followed.
- It can reveal that a clip was generated, composited or exported by a particular tool.
- It gives investigators a signed audit trail that can be compared with the uploader’s claim.
What a missing manifest means
Nothing detected is not the same as “not AI.” Platforms, downloads, cropping, editing and format conversion can strip a manifest. Microsoft Learn explicitly cautions that a result showing no provenance information does not necessarily mean the content was not AI-generated. Treat an absent record as inconclusive and continue with source and context checks.
Why provenance is not a truth certificate
A camera can record a staged event, and a generated video can depict a true statement. Provenance can tell you how a file was made or changed; it cannot independently verify the caption, location, identity of people or reality of the event.

How can I find the earliest appearance of a video?
Search distinctive frames rather than relying on the current caption. An earlier upload often exposes a different date, location or explanation.
- Extract several keyframes. Choose frames containing readable signs, faces, buildings, vehicles, unusual objects or distinctive scenery. Include frames from different points in the clip.
- Run separate reverse searches. Use InVID-WeVerify, Google Lens or another image-search service. InVID-WeVerify can fragment a video into keyframes, inspect metadata and support contextual or forensic analysis, although functions depend on platform access, file quality and available metadata.
- Compare the results, not just the top thumbnail. Open pages, examine captions and dates, and note whether a result is a repost, a news report or an unsourced compilation.
- Follow the oldest credible trail. The first indexed result is not necessarily the first upload or the original filmer. AFP’s verification guidance treats a reverse-search match as a lead, not proof of authorship.
- Check edits between copies. Compare duration, aspect ratio, watermarks, audio and cuts. A later version may have been cropped, mirrored, re-captioned or combined with unrelated footage.
A failed search does not prove originality. New footage, private posts, low-quality frames and search-index gaps can all produce no match.
How do I verify the claimed time and place?
Test the caption against independent physical and historical evidence. A genuine video can be recycled from an earlier event or a different country.
Check visual geography
- Match landmarks, building shapes, road markings, transit signs, storefronts and language against maps or satellite imagery.
- Look for region-specific utility poles, traffic signs, license-plate formats and architecture.
- Compare terrain, coastline, skyline and camera angle from more than one viewpoint.
Check time-dependent clues
- Compare clothing, vegetation, shadows and weather with the claimed date.
- Use historical weather records where a storm, snowfall or unusual heat is central to the claim.
- Check whether construction, election posters, vehicle models or public signage existed at that time.
Seek independent witnesses
Search for contemporaneous reporting from multiple outlets and separate recordings by people who were not copying one another. The House of Commons Library (2026) and AFP methodology emphasize that context verification should include time, place and independent corroboration, not just visual plausibility.

Which frame-level clues suggest generation or editing?
Scrubbing slowly can reveal inconsistencies that disappear at normal playback speed. These clues generate hypotheses; none is a stand-alone authenticity test.
| Clue | What to inspect | Why it is not conclusive |
|---|---|---|
| Face or hand geometry | Features that reshape between frames, extra fingers, drifting earrings or teeth | Compression, motion blur and unusual camera angles can create similar artifacts; newer generators may avoid obvious errors. |
| Lip-sync and speech | Mouth movement that does not match phonemes, delayed or unnaturally smooth speech | Dubbing, poor microphones and ordinary post-production can also cause a mismatch. |
| Motion continuity | Objects changing speed, weight or direction without a physical cause | Frame interpolation, variable frame rates and cuts can produce unnatural motion. |
| Reflections and lighting | Shadows, highlights or reflections that disagree with the scene | Mixed lighting, glass and aggressive compression can obscure real reflections. |
| Text and repeated textures | Warped signs, changing letters, smeared logos or duplicated background details | Low resolution and rescaling can distort genuine text and patterns. |
| Edits and audio seams | Abrupt cuts, looping ambience, room tone changes or an audio track that does not match the scene | Legitimate news edits and montage videos use cuts and replacement audio. |
Do not conclude that a clip is authentic merely because hands, eyes or text look normal. Generators improve quickly, and ordinary platform compression can hide or mimic the same defects.
Should I trust an AI-video detector?
Use automated classifiers only as supporting evidence. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO, 2024) concludes that current deepfake detection technologies have limited effectiveness in real-world scenarios. A detector may miss an unfamiliar generator or flag a genuine clip when resolution, lighting or compression differs from its training data.

How to document a detector result
- Record the product name, version, date, input file and any preprocessing.
- Keep the exact output, including whether it reports a probability, confidence interval or binary label.
- Compare results from independent methods rather than treating agreement as proof; tools can share the same blind spots.
- Report “the tool estimated a high likelihood” instead of converting a score into “this is AI.”
Ofcom (2025) recommends combining attribution with other interventions. It also warns that users should not be left to identify deepfakes on their own or carry the full burden of detecting misleading content.

Which verification method is strongest for each question?
No method answers every question. Choose evidence according to whether you need origin, edit history, visual likelihood or context.
| Method | Establishes best | Weaknesses | Original file needed? | Auditability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Signed Content Credentials/C2PA | Origin and recorded edit history | Can be absent, stripped or incomplete; does not prove the event is true | Usually, for the manifest to remain intact | Strong when the signature and chain validate |
| Metadata | Possible capture time, device or location | Platforms remove it and users can alter it | Best with the original file | Moderate corroboration only |
| Reverse image search | Earlier copies and contradictory captions | Cannot prove authorship or that the oldest indexed copy is first | No, but sharper keyframes improve results | Reproducible if you save queries and result dates |
| Time-and-place checks | Whether the claimed setting and date fit reality | Requires reliable maps, weather data and independent reporting | No | Strong when sources are recorded |
| Frame and audio inspection | Visual or editorial inconsistencies | False positives from compression and false negatives from better generation | Highest-resolution copy preferred | Good if frame numbers and observations are logged |
| Automated detector | A model’s estimated likelihood under its training conditions | Unknown-generator misses, false positives and version dependence | Usually a downloadable file | Only if tool, version and input are preserved |
How do I combine the checks into a defensible decision?
Work from the least fragile evidence to the most subjective. Keep a short evidence log so someone else can understand how you reached the result.
- Identify the claim. Write down exactly what the post asserts about who, what, where and when.
- Preserve the file and post. Save the original download, URL, account, caption, timestamp and watermark.
- Check provenance and metadata. Record any valid C2PA manifest and treat ordinary metadata as corroboration only.
- Search keyframes. Save the frame images, search dates and the earliest credible matches.
- Test location and date. Compare physical details, weather, maps and independent reporting.
- Inspect frame and audio continuity. Note exact timestamps or frame numbers for each anomaly.
- Run detectors, if useful. Log the tool and version, but keep its output in the supporting-evidence column.
- Resolve contradictions. A signed origin record, an earlier contradictory upload or an impossible landmark may outweigh a visual impression.
- Assign a calibrated label. Choose “AI-generated,” “AI-edited,” “manipulated,” “real but out of context,” “unverified” or “authenticity not established,” and state what remains unknown.
What common mistakes lead to a false verdict?
- Trusting one tell: Perfect hands do not prove a camera recording, and a strange face does not prove AI.
- Equating no provenance with no AI: Re-encoding and platform processing can remove credentials.
- Treating a detector percentage as fact: A probability is conditional on a model’s training and input quality.
- Assuming the oldest search result is original: Indexing dates and upload dates are different, and copied files may predate the page that indexed them.
- Ignoring the caption: Authentic footage can still be misinformation when its date, location or event is wrong.
- Overlooking disclosed, harmless edits: AI assistance is not automatically deceptive; the question is what was changed and whether the disclosure fits the claim.
- Sharing the clip while checking it: Reposts increase reach and can destroy the context you are trying to establish.
How should I report the result?
Describe evidence and uncertainty separately. A concise report should identify the file, claim, checks performed, strongest evidence and unresolved points.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- AI-generated: use only when provenance or converging evidence establishes synthetic creation.
- AI-edited: specify which portion appears synthetic or altered and which portion is camera-captured.
- Manipulated: describe the conventional edit, splice, speed change or crop without claiming AI.
- Real but out of context: cite the earlier event, location or caption conflict.
- Unverified: explain which source, provenance or corroboration is missing.
- Authenticity not established: use when evidence is mixed and no category is supportable.
Keep the original file, notes, keyframes and detector logs available for review. Do not publish private personal data merely because it appears in metadata or a profile.

What does the public evidence say about labels and detection limits?
Ofcom’s 2025 user research found that 85% of adults support online platforms attaching AI labels, while 34% said they had ever seen one. The gap shows why labels can help but cannot replace provenance, context checks and platform responsibility. GAO’s 2024 assessment likewise describes real-world deepfake detection as limited rather than providing a universal accuracy percentage.
The practical implication is simple: treat verification as an evidence chain. A detector, watermark, reverse-search result or visual anomaly can contribute one link, but a responsible conclusion explains how the links fit and where the chain is incomplete.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a watermark prove that a video was made by AI?
A watermark can indicate generation by a supported system while it remains intact. Cropping, compression and basic edits can strip or degrade many watermarks, so an absent mark is inconclusive and a present mark still does not prove the caption is true.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat should I do if the original video is unavailable?
Work from the highest-quality repost, preserve the post and document every transformation you can identify. State that provenance could not be verified, then rely more heavily on independent time-and-place checks and earlier appearances.
Is a deepfake always illegal or harmful?
No. An AI-assisted edit can be disclosed, authorized and harmless, such as a creative effect or accessibility adaptation. The verification question is whether the content or its presentation deceptively changes what viewers are led to believe.
How can journalists make a video check reproducible?
Keep the untouched file, hash or archive it where policy permits, save keyframes, record search dates and URLs, and note frame numbers for observations. Log detector names and versions so another reviewer can repeat the same inputs.
Why do different detectors disagree about the same clip?
They are trained on different generators, codecs, resolutions and manipulation types. Re-encoding, cropping and unfamiliar synthesis methods can move a file outside a model’s training distribution, producing divergent false positives or false negatives.
