How should you choose a subject before taking a photo?
Start by deciding what the frame is about. Use both distances across a set of photographs when the subject deserves it: a wider view explains where a structure sits, while a tighter view isolates a joint, opening, surface, or plant. The two frames answer different questions, so they are more useful together than two nearly identical views.
Use the wide frame to establish context
Step back—or find a position across a gap—when the important information is how parts relate. A context image can show a bridge spanning an opening, a platform connected to a larger mass, or vegetation growing within a broad expanse of concrete. Include enough of the surroundings to orient the viewer, but avoid letting the background swallow the subject.
Use the close frame to emphasize detail
Move closer when the story is in a surface, opening, connection, or patch of flora. A detail view can make texture and shape easier to notice, but it should retain a clue to what the viewer is seeing. If a crop or close viewpoint makes a surface impossible to place within the structure, try a slightly wider angle that keeps both the detail and a recognizable edge or opening.

How can lighting make architectural details easier to read?
Look for side light when you want surface relief to stand out: light arriving from an angle can reveal carving and texture through highlights and shadows. Think about the cost of returning
A photo’s value is not only its composition. Consider how much movement and return travel it requires, especially if the subject is far from the central computer. A marginally better angle may not be worth the route if it resembles an image you already have; a distinctive frame that cannot easily be repeated may justify the detour.
