On desktop Chrome, open a New Tab and select AI Mode beside the search box, or select the AI Mode control at the right of the address bar. You can also choose AI Mode on a Google results page or go directly to google.com/ai. To return to regular results, select All or the standard Search results tab when it appears, or start a new query at google.com.
AI Mode lets you ask follow-up questions and, where supported, include voice, images, files, URLs, or browser-tab context. Its controls and availability vary by account, country, language, device, and rollout, so the steps below distinguish the entry points and explain what to try if you cannot see them.
What is the difference between Google Search and AI Mode?
Google Search presents conventional results, such as links you can open and compare. AI Mode responds conversationally and lets you continue with follow-up questions; in supported experiences, you can also add material such as a page you are viewing or other files and tabs.

AI Mode is an alternative way to search, not a requirement for using Chrome or Google Search. Google says no AI extension is required to use Chrome’s built-in AI experiences.

How do I switch to AI Mode from a New Tab in Chrome?
On desktop, the New Tab page is a direct route into AI Mode. Select the control beside the search box, or use the documented keyboard shortcut if it is available to you.
- Open Chrome and open a New Tab.
- Look at the right side of the New Tab search box for AI Mode.
- Select AI Mode, enter your question, and submit it. Google documents Tab followed by Enter as a keyboard route from the New Tab page.
- When the AI Mode results page opens, use its follow-up field to ask another question or refine the original one.
- If the page offers an add-content control, use it to include supported tabs, images, or files. Tools such as Canvas or image creation may also appear, depending on availability.
A detailed question with the relevant context is often more useful than a short keyword query. For example, you might ask for a comparison and then add a page or file that contains the material you want considered. The available inputs and tools are not identical for every user.
How do I open AI Mode from Chrome’s address bar?
When the AI Mode control is shown at the right of Chrome’s address bar, you can start a search without first opening a Google results page.
- In Chrome, select the AI Mode control at the right end of the address bar.
- Type your question and submit it. If the microphone control is shown, you can use it for voice input.
- To ask about the page currently open in Chrome, use the add-content control and choose the page or tab when prompted. Chrome opens the response in the AI Mode side panel.
- To include more than one source, open the plus menu and add recent tabs, images, or files if those choices are available.
Google’s announcement dated April 16, 2026, described mixing these kinds of inputs in a single AI Mode search. Seeing fewer choices in your own browser does not necessarily mean the feature is broken: controls depend on the device and rollout.

How do I switch from an ordinary Google results page?
After entering a query on Google, select AI Mode when that option appears on the results page. You can instead open google.com/ai directly.
The option may not appear for every query, account, or region. Google also documents AI Mode in the Google app, but that is a separate mobile entry point from Chrome’s desktop controls.
How do I get back to regular Google results?
On a Google Search interface that shows both experiences, select All or the standard Search results tab to return to conventional results. You can also start a new search at google.com.
Returning to Search changes the results view; it does not require removing an extension or changing Chrome settings. If the Search tab is not visible in the current view, use a new query at Google instead.

Can AI Mode use my current page or other Chrome tabs?
Yes, in supported Chrome experiences. Use the add-content control to pass the current page into AI Mode, or the plus menu to add recent tabs and other supported material.
For a question about one page, use the current-page option in the address-bar flow; Google says Chrome opens that response in a side panel. For several sources, add the desired tabs or files explicitly. Do not assume AI Mode has access to every open tab automatically: the documented workflow is to add the context you want it to use.
Chrome AI experiences can involve account and browsing context. Before including sensitive content, review the current controls for your Google account and consider whether the page or file should be shared with the feature.

What should I do if AI Mode is missing in Chrome?
First check whether the feature has rolled out to your account and device. Google says AI Mode is not available to everyone or on every device, and that expansion beyond the United States and to non-English languages is gradual.

- Check the entry point: Look on the New Tab page, in the address bar, and on a Google results page. A control missing from one location may still be available through another supported entry point.
- Update Chrome: Make sure the browser is up to date before troubleshooting an absent control.
- Check sign-in: Sign in where required, then check whether the control appears.
- Consider eligibility: Availability can differ by country, language, device, and account. A setting change cannot guarantee access if the feature has not reached your setup.
- Try the direct page: Open google.com/ai to check whether AI Mode is accessible there.
If it remains unavailable, use ordinary Google Search. The absence of the control does not mean conventional Search is unavailable.
How do I hide the AI Mode control in the address bar?
If the address-bar control is distracting, right-click the address bar and turn off Always show AI Mode. This hides that control without removing the feature from supported New Tab or Search entry points.

Google’s warning is direct: “AI responses may include mistakes.” Treat an answer as a starting point, follow its links to inspect the underlying material, and use ordinary Search to verify claims that matter.
This is especially important when an answer combines several tabs or files: check that the cited or linked material actually supports the specific conclusion you need. A conversational response can be convenient for exploring a topic, but it is not a substitute for checking important details against their source.

Do I need to install an extension to use AI Mode in Chrome?
