You can switch an eSIM to a new phone when the carrier and both phones support a transfer method. The cleanest route is the built-in transfer flow during setup, or the Cellular/SIM settings on the new phone. Keep both phones powered on, unlocked, nearby, and connected to Wi-Fi. If no transfer option appears, your carrier must issue a replacement eSIM through its app, account page, activation link, or QR code.
This process moves your cellular number and plan only. It does not copy photos, contacts, apps, messages, or other personal data. Do not erase or trade in the old phone until calls, texts, and mobile data work on the new one.
What happens when you switch an eSIM?
An eSIM transfer activates your mobile plan on the new phone and usually deactivates the old eSIM profile. The exact handoff is controlled by both the phone platform and the carrier, so a transfer that works between two phones on the same platform may not work across iPhone and Android.
There are two fundamentally different methods:
- Direct device transfer: The new phone detects the old phone and securely moves the plan after you approve the request.
- Carrier replacement: The carrier creates a new eSIM for the new phone through an app, account workflow, activation link, or QR code. This is the fallback when direct transfer is unavailable.
Activating the replacement profile normally turns off the old profile. A failed automatic transfer does not always disable the old eSIM, so check service on both phones before assuming the line has moved.

What should I prepare before moving the eSIM?
Prepare both phones and your carrier credentials before starting. Missing any one of these conditions can hide the transfer command or interrupt activation.
- Confirm that the new phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked when the carrier requires an unlocked device.
- Keep the old phone available, powered on, nearby, and unlocked with its passcode.
- Connect both phones to Wi-Fi. Turn on Bluetooth for Apple and Samsung transfer flows.
- Install current system software. Apple Quick Transfer requires iOS 18.4 or later on both iPhones. Pixel automatic transfer requires Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services, and a screen lock. Samsung recommends current software plus Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices.
- Have your carrier account login, security PIN, and identity-verification method ready. Depending on the carrier, verification may use a one-time password or a confirmation call.
- Make sure the new phone has enough battery to complete setup and activation without shutting down.
Do not delete the eSIM from the old phone in advance. The old profile may be needed to receive a verification code or to recover the account if activation stalls.
How do I transfer an eSIM from one iPhone to another?
Use Apple’s Quick Transfer when both iPhones meet the software and account requirements. During setup, the new iPhone should offer to transfer a cellular plan from the nearby old iPhone.

- Turn on the new iPhone and begin setup.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account used on the old iPhone.
- Keep the old iPhone unlocked with its passcode, place it nearby, and confirm that Bluetooth is on.
- When the cellular-plan transfer prompt appears, select the number or plan to move.
- Approve the request on the old iPhone and complete any carrier verification shown on screen.
- Wait for the new iPhone to show an active cellular connection. Test a call, text message, and mobile-data session before erasing the old phone.
Apple states that when the cellular plan on the new iPhone activates, the previous SIM is deactivated. That means the old iPhone will normally stop using that line immediately after successful activation.
If the iPhone is already set up
- On the new iPhone, open Settings > Cellular.
- Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Choose the option to transfer a plan from another iPhone.
- Approve the transfer on the old iPhone and follow the identity checks.
- Confirm service on the new iPhone before removing or resetting the old device.
If the transfer choice is absent, do not keep retrying random settings. The carrier may not support Quick Transfer for that line, country, or phone combination; use its replacement-eSIM process instead.

How do I transfer an eSIM between Android phones?
Android transfer menus differ by manufacturer. Pixel and Samsung Galaxy phones have separate paths, and carrier participation still determines whether the transfer succeeds.
Pixel to Pixel
For automatic transfer, the new Pixel needs Android 12 or later, current Google Play Services, and a screen lock.

- Select the eSIM or number you want to move and tap Transfer.
- Tap Activate when prompted and complete any carrier verification.
- Place a test call, send a text, and turn off Wi-Fi briefly to confirm mobile data.
On a Pixel that is already configured, open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Transfer SIM from another device. Follow the on-screen pairing and approval prompts.
Google notes that an unsuccessful automatic transfer does not necessarily disable the old eSIM. If the new Pixel cannot activate, keep the old phone available and contact the carrier to activate the eSIM manually.
Galaxy to Galaxy
- On the new Galaxy, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager.
- Tap Add eSIM, then choose Transfer SIM from another phone.
- Read the code displayed on the new phone.
- Enter that code on the old phone when requested.
- Choose the number to transfer and confirm on both phones.
- Wait for activation, then test calls, texts, and mobile data.
Samsung lists supported carriers by region. If your carrier does not appear in the supported list, contact it for a replacement eSIM rather than deleting the old profile.

Can I move an eSIM between an iPhone and Android phone?
Sometimes, but cross-platform support is less universal than same-platform transfer. Apple describes Android-to-iPhone moves using carrier activation or a QR code, while direct transfer is available only with iOS 26 and selected carriers and manufacturers. Samsung likewise lists specific carrier and country combinations for iPhone-to-Galaxy transfers.

If it offers a transfer from the other platform, keep both phones nearby and follow the pairing instructions. If no cross-platform option appears, request a replacement eSIM from the carrier; do not assume that an iPhone eSIM QR code can be reused indefinitely or that every carrier supports direct migration.
Android to iPhone
- Start iPhone setup or open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM after setup.
- Look for a transfer-from-Android option. Availability depends on iOS version, carrier, country, and the specific Android manufacturer.
- If the option is missing, choose the carrier-activation or QR-code route supplied by your carrier.
- Complete identity verification and activate the new profile.
iPhone to Galaxy
- On the Galaxy, open Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM.
- Choose the transfer option if it is shown for your carrier and region.
- Follow the code and approval prompts on both phones.
- If the option is unavailable, use the carrier’s replacement-eSIM workflow.
What should I do if eSIM transfer does not appear?
A missing transfer button usually means the carrier does not support direct transfer for that exact phone pair, software version, country, or plan. The practical solution is to have the carrier issue a replacement eSIM.
Carrier app or account replacement
Sign in to the carrier’s app or website, select the line, and look for wording such as Replace SIM, Get a new eSIM, Activate on a new phone, or Switch device. The carrier may ask for the new phone’s EID, account PIN, an OTP, or a second identity check. Install the profile only on the new phone and wait for activation before resetting the old one.
Examples of carrier-specific procedures
- Tello: Direct eSIM transfer is not supported. Generate a fresh eSIM in the account, install it on the new phone, and expect the old eSIM to deactivate immediately. This moves phone service only; it does not transfer photos, text messages, contacts, or apps.
- giffgaff: In the app or account, go to Account > SIM > Replace my SIM > Switch to new eSIM, then complete the multifactor-authentication check.
- Jio: Use the MyJio app, provide the new phone’s EID, complete OTP authentication, and wait through the stated two-hour cooling period. Jio then sends an eSIM notification or provides a QR code for installation.
These examples are not interchangeable. Carrier menus, verification rules, and waiting periods vary by country and plan, so use the instructions shown for your own account.

Why did my eSIM transfer fail, and how can I recover?
Most failures come from unsupported carrier combinations, outdated software, locked phones, or incomplete verification. Work through these checks in order.
- Retry once with the right connection: Keep both phones on Wi-Fi, nearby, unlocked, and powered on. Turn on Bluetooth for Apple and Samsung flows.
- Check compatibility: Verify that the new phone supports eSIM and is unlocked where required. Confirm that the operating-system versions meet the platform’s requirements.
- Check carrier support: Ask whether direct transfer is supported for your exact old phone, new phone, number type, and country. A carrier may support same-platform transfers but not cross-platform ones.
- Use replacement activation: Start the carrier app, activation link, QR-code, or replacement-eSIM process. Have your account PIN and identity-verification method ready.
- Do not erase the old phone: Keep it intact until calls, texts, and mobile data work on the new phone.
- Recover through Wi-Fi if service stops: If the old phone loses service before installation completes, connect it to Wi-Fi and use the carrier’s account-recovery or support channel.
If the new phone shows an eSIM installed but no network, restart it, check that the line is enabled in Cellular or SIM settings, and complete any pending carrier verification. If the carrier has not provisioned the line, only the carrier can correct that account-side state.
When is the old eSIM deactivated?
Deactivation timing depends on the method. Apple says the previous SIM is deactivated when the plan activates on the new iPhone. Tello’s replacement process deactivates the old eSIM immediately when a fresh eSIM is generated. Google says a failed automatic Pixel transfer does not necessarily disable the old eSIM.
Because timing varies, treat the old phone as active until the new phone has passed three tests: an outgoing call, an incoming text, and mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off. Only then should you erase, sell, or reset the old phone.

What does an eSIM transfer move, and what does it not move?
It moves the carrier authorization for your mobile number or plan. It does not migrate the phone’s personal content.

- Moved: The cellular line, number, and carrier plan when activation succeeds.
- Not moved: Photos, contacts, apps, text-message history, device settings, and other personal files.
Use the phone maker’s backup and setup tools separately for personal data. An eSIM transfer cannot substitute for a device backup or a phone-to-phone data migration.
Which eSIM-switching method should I use?
Choose the method that matches your platform and carrier support. Direct transfer is usually simplest when available; carrier replacement is the dependable fallback.

- The new phone displays the correct number and carrier.
- An outgoing call connects.
- An incoming call rings on the new phone.
- You can send and receive text messages.
- Mobile data works with Wi-Fi disabled.
- Any carrier voicemail or short-code service you rely on responds normally.
- Your important personal data has been restored separately from backup or phone-to-phone setup.
Once every check passes, remove accounts and reset the old phone using its normal device-reset procedure. If one check fails, leave the old phone untouched and contact the carrier while connected to Wi-Fi.

Can I switch an eSIM if my old phone is lost or broken?
A direct phone-to-phone transfer generally requires the old device to be available for pairing and approval. If it cannot be used, ask the carrier to issue a replacement eSIM through account recovery, identity verification, or support.
Do I need a physical SIM-eject tool to move an eSIM?
No. The transfer is handled through phone settings or the carrier’s digital activation process. A SIM-eject tool and other physical accessories are not required for an eSIM-only switch.
How long does an eSIM replacement take?
There is no universal time because carriers use different activation systems. One documented Jio workflow includes a two-hour cooling period before the eSIM notification or QR code is delivered; other carriers may activate immediately or require a support confirmation.

Once the new profile activates, the carrier generally deactivates the old profile, so the same number will not remain active on both phones. You can still use the old phone over Wi-Fi for local apps and stored content until you reset it.
