You can switch AI assistants without losing the work that matters, but an account export is not usually a portable copy of your assistant. Back up your data before cancelling, then handle chat history, memory, prompts and project instructions, and files as separate items. Import what the new service supports, rebuild the rest, and test key workflows before relying on them.
What you can—and cannot—move
Think of a switch as a small data-portability project. A conversation archive, an assistant’s memory, reusable prompts, project instructions, and uploaded files are different assets. A provider may export one without giving another provider a way to recreate the original account, searchable history, or workspace.
- Chat history: past conversations. An import may preserve text without recreating native, searchable history.
- Memory and response preferences: durable facts and guidance that shape future replies. These usually need a dedicated memory-import feature or a concise context brief.
- Prompts and project instructions: reusable wording, goals, constraints, terminology, and workflow steps. Save these separately rather than assuming they are embedded in a chat export.
- Files and attachments: source documents, project uploads, and generated images or files. Check whether the destination imports them; chat-history import often does not.
The practical goal is not to reproduce every old interaction. It is to preserve the context and materials you need, and to know whether each item becomes native content in the new service or merely remains available as a reference.
Back up and organize before you cancel
- Request the source account export. Do this while you still have access. OpenAI says a ChatGPT export can take up to seven days; its download link expires after 24 hours. - Create a portable context brief. Capture reusable prompts, response preferences, project goals and current status, recurring steps, important terms, and pointers to source files. You can ask the old assistant to draft a summary, but review it for accuracy, gaps, and sensitive material before using it elsewhere. - Inventory each project separately. Save project-level instructions, essential chats or templates, and source files. ChatGPT Projects use chats, uploaded files, and custom instructions as context; an exported conversation alone should not be treated as a project backup. OpenAI: Projects in ChatGPT
- Keep the original archive. Retain the export until you have checked the new setup. A separate offline copy is optional; choose storage based on the archive’s actual size rather than assuming a particular device is necessary.
Choose the right import route for the destination
These documented routes do different jobs. Check the provider’s current help page before switching because availability and interface details can change.

Move memory, prompts, projects, and files deliberately
Memory and response preferences
Use a destination’s native memory import if available, but treat the result as a draft. Claude lets you review extracted memory entries, and its import can miss information. Confirm that important preferences and facts survived; do not assume a memory summary includes your complete chat history. Gemini documents memory import separately from history import, reinforcing that these are distinct transfers.
Prompts and project instructions
Keep reusable prompts in a document or other user-controlled location, grouped by purpose. For each project, preserve its objective, current status, instructions, important terminology, and the prompts or templates that drive recurring work. Recreate the project or equivalent workspace in the destination and add the instructions there. ChatGPT’s project-only memory confines context to that project and excludes personal memories and chats outside it, so record project context independently rather than expecting personal memory to fill the gaps. Files and attachments
Make a separate file inventory: note each important file, what it is used for, and which project needs it. Upload source files through the destination’s supported route. Old conversations
Decide which conversations you need to search or consult, rather than treating every archived exchange as working context. ChatGPT’s conversation-file upload is reference material in a new chat, not a transfer into native history. Claude can search its own prior conversations and use its memory in future chats, but that does not mean another service’s archive will become equivalent searchable Claude history. Rebuild and test before depending on the new assistant
After importing and recreating the essentials, run a small acceptance check. Use actual work you expect the assistant to handle, not just a generic greeting.

- Run one project workflow with its instructions and required source files available.
- Check that one important fact or preference is reflected in memory, where the service supports memory.
- Retrieve or consult one old conversation and one important file using the destination’s actual import or upload method.
- Correct inaccurate imported context and remove anything you no longer want the assistant to retain.
Keep the source export until these checks are satisfactory. If a route only provides a reference file rather than native history, label and store it accordingly so you do not mistake access to an archive for a fully migrated workspace.

Can I move chats between ChatGPT accounts?
OpenAI does not support merging accounts or moving conversations into another account’s ChatGPT history. Its documented workaround—uploading the exported conversation file into a new chat—makes it a reference in that chat, not a full migration. OpenAI conversation transfer guidance
Can I import memory from another provider?
Gemini documents a memory-import flow, and Claude accepts a pasted memory summary through its memory settings.
