The most useful support is money and participation that a newsroom can plan around: join as a recurring member, subscribe, give a one-time donation, use a matching campaign, attend or sponsor events, and share stories under the publisher’s stated permissions. Choose an outlet whose mission, evidence standard, geography and communities fit your interests, then inspect its funding disclosures, editorial-independence policy, legal status and financial reporting before paying.
What supporting positive news actually supports
Positive news is not simply a stream of cheerful headlines. The strongest outlets apply reporting standards to constructive or solutions-focused coverage: they investigate a social problem, examine responses to it, test what evidence shows and explain limits or unintended effects. The Solutions Journalism Network defines solutions journalism as rigorous reporting on responses to social problems and publishes a toolkit for that approach.
Independent publishers need income for reporting, editing, fact-checking, technology, accessibility, newsletters and community work. Reader revenue is a major pillar. The Center for Investigative Reporting reported in 2024 that donations and subscriptions supplied 70% of its annual revenue. That figure describes one organization, not an industry-wide target, but it shows why direct reader support can matter more than a click or a social-media like.

The 2026 Institute for Nonprofit News Index reports that 49% of members use four or more revenue streams. INN members generated more than $750 million in combined revenue in 2025, while median individual newsroom revenue was $525,000. Those figures cover nonprofit news organizations in the index; they are not a recommended budget for every publisher.

Pick a publisher you can support with confidence
1. Check what “positive” means editorially
Look for a clear description of how stories are selected and reported. A credible outlet should distinguish verified reporting from advocacy, opinion, public-relations material and unverified feel-good claims. Ask whether it names sources, links to primary evidence, corrects errors and reports results that do not fit a hopeful narrative.
2. Match the outlet to your community priorities
Decide whether you want local accountability, a particular language, coverage of an underserved group, national investigations or reporting about responses to global problems. A publisher can be independent and still be a poor fit for your needs if it does not cover the geography or communities you want to strengthen.
3. Read the money and independence disclosures
Before giving, find the publisher’s current donor list or funding disclosure, editorial-independence statement, nonprofit registration information when applicable, annual report and financial statements. Check whether grants are restricted to specific projects, whether a sponsor receives advertising or event benefits, and whether any funder can influence assignments or publication timing.

Independence is not proved by a nonprofit label alone. It is demonstrated by policies, governance and visible reporting about money and editorial control. ProPublica, for example, describes reader donations as central to its financial health and publishes regular financial reporting and annual statements. Use that kind of transparency as a practical benchmark rather than assuming every organization follows the same model.
Choose the support method that fits your goal
| Support method | When it is most useful | What to verify before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring membership | You want the newsroom to forecast dependable income and you expect to support it for at least several months. | Billing frequency, cancellation path, member benefits and whether the payment is a donation or a membership purchase. |
| Subscription | The publisher places reporting behind a paid edition or offers a package built around regular access. | What content is included, renewal terms, regional taxes and the difference between a subscription and a charitable gift. |
| One-time donation | You have a fixed amount, want to respond to a campaign or are testing whether the outlet fits your priorities. | Recipient identity, payment fees, tax treatment and whether the gift is restricted to a project. |
| Matching campaign | You can give during an active campaign that adds funder support to local community donations. | Whether the newsroom participates, the campaign dates, remaining match availability and any gift limits. |
| Event sponsorship or ticket | You want to fund journalism while helping a newsroom build a local audience or professional network. | What the sponsorship includes, how editorial and sponsor benefits are separated, and refund terms. |
| Sharing or permitted republication | You cannot give much money but can expand a story’s reach or help another community use it. | Copyright, attribution, paywall, image and translation permissions stated by the publisher. |
Recurring membership or one-time donation?
Why recurring support is valuable
A monthly or annual commitment gives a publisher a more predictable base for staffing and reporting plans. Positive News explicitly asks readers to become monthly supporters and says regular contributions fund independent, constructive, solutions-focused reporting. The amount is less important than choosing a level you can maintain without creating financial strain.
Fix The News describes itself as an independent, subscriber-supported publication. Its paid membership unlocks the full edition and states that 30% goes to charity. That is a specific promise from that publication, not a standard rule for paid news memberships; read the current terms to see which charitable recipients and conditions apply.

When a one-time gift makes sense
A single donation is useful when a newsroom is raising money for a reporting project, replacing lost advertising, responding to an emergency or participating in a time-limited match. It also lets you evaluate an outlet before committing to a renewal. A one-time gift can be unrestricted or tied to a stated purpose, so read the appeal carefully.
A simple decision rule
- Choose recurring support when you trust the outlet’s work, expect to follow it over time and value predictable newsroom income.
- Choose a one-time donation when your budget is irregular, you are responding to a specific campaign or you still need to assess the publisher.
- Use both only when the combined amount is comfortable and the publisher clearly explains how each payment is treated.
Use matching campaigns, especially for local news
NewsMatch is designed to match donations from local community members with funder support for nonprofit newsrooms. A match can increase the resources associated with your gift, but it is not automatically available to every publisher or throughout the year.
- Open the newsroom’s own donation or campaign page rather than relying on an old social-media post.
- Confirm that the outlet is a participating newsroom and note the campaign’s opening and closing dates.
- Read the match rules: some campaigns limit the amount that can be matched, require a minimum gift or stop matching when a pooled fund is exhausted.
- Check the receipt to confirm the recipient, payment type and whether the match was acknowledged.
Matching is most useful when the publisher’s mission and independence already meet your standards. A match should improve the value of a good gift, not persuade you to support an outlet you would otherwise reject.
How to check editorial independence
Look for a written firewall
The publisher should explain that funders do not approve stories, select sources, edit copy or delay publication. A 2023 survey by NORC and Media Impact Funders found that 92% of nonprofit news organizations and 83% of for-profit outlets said funders never saw supported editorial content before publication. The survey reports what organizations said about their practices; it does not certify every individual outlet.
Journalism researcher Tom Rosenstiel captured the reason this matters: “If you’re going to give a lot of money to a news organization and nobody believes what the news organization reports, what’s the point?” Treat credibility as part of the value you are supporting.

- Identify the legal entity receiving payment and, for a nonprofit, review its current registration and financial filings.
- Read the annual report for revenue sources, major grants, restricted funds and spending priorities.
- Check whether a donor list names foundations, corporations, public agencies or individual sponsors.
- Find the corrections policy, ethics code and conflict-of-interest disclosures.
- See whether the organization reports who sits on its board and who controls editorial decisions.
Separate influence from ordinary support benefits
A membership can include newsletters, events or access to a full edition without giving members editorial control. A sponsorship may include recognition or tickets, but it should not purchase favorable coverage. If benefits and editorial authority are not clearly separated, ask the publisher for clarification before donating.

Support events, sharing and lawful republication
Events provide money and community value at the same time. Buying a ticket, sponsoring a program or offering a venue can help a publisher meet readers, recruit members and develop reporting partnerships. Review the event description to understand whether your payment is a donation, ticket purchase or sponsorship and what recognition is included.
Sharing a story can be meaningful when it reaches residents, policymakers or community groups who would not otherwise see it. Use the publisher’s share buttons, link to the original article and preserve the headline and byline. Do not copy an entire article, remove a paywall, reuse photographs or translate a story unless the outlet’s terms allow it.
For organizations that want to republish, request written permission and confirm the allowed territory, language, duration, attribution, images, advertising and whether the text may be edited. Good republication sends readers back to the original newsroom while respecting its copyright and revenue model.

Some supporters can help with infrastructure rather than a personal membership. Google News Initiative identifies several diversification routes: direct reader revenue, monetized newsletters, community-event sponsorships, ticketing and philanthropic funding. A publisher may need help improving a payment page, converting newsletter readers, measuring event attendance, testing membership messaging or combining several revenue streams without weakening editorial independence.
PressPatron says its tools handle donations, memberships and subscriptions for more than 175 publishers and journalism organizations. That is the provider’s stated figure. Any partnership, pricing or affiliate arrangement should be verified directly before a newsroom adopts a tool.
If you have professional expertise, offer a defined contribution: accessibility review, audience research, event production, legal guidance, bookkeeping or technology support. Agree in writing on scope, ownership of work, privacy and whether the help is donated or paid. Do not ask for favorable coverage in exchange.

Use education to strengthen solutions-focused reporting
Supporting the practice of positive journalism can include training and books, not only payments to a publication. Bill Dodd’s Solutions Journalism: News at the Intersection of Hope, Leadership, and Expertise is listed by Bloomsbury in paperback and hardback. Bloomsbury gives a publication date of February 15, 2021 and describes it as a guide to solutions-focused journalism.

Search for the exact title and author, or use the phrase solutions journalism book, then verify current stock, price and regional availability before ordering. A book purchase supports the publisher and author under the seller’s terms; it is not the same as a donation to a newsroom.
Compare outlets with a repeatable scorecard
Write down your answers before you give so a compelling campaign does not replace due diligence.
- Mission: Can the outlet explain its definition of positive or solutions-focused reporting?
- Evidence: Are sources, methods, data and corrections visible?
- Independence: Is there a written editorial firewall and a record of funder separation?
- Financial transparency: Are revenue sources, nonprofit filings or annual reports current?
- Community fit: Does the outlet serve the geography, language or group you want to support?
- Impact: Does it show concrete civic outcomes, collaborations or community response without claiming that every story changes policy?
- Payment fit: Is the charge clearly identified as a donation, membership, subscription, ticket or sponsorship?
The Colorado Sun’s 2025 annual report illustrates the operational detail to look for: it describes nearly 2,000 stories, collaboration with dozens of newsrooms and work by membership and technology teams to improve sustainability. An annual report like this helps connect a publisher’s mission to actual activity and infrastructure.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every nonprofit is independent
Nonprofit status describes a legal and tax structure, not an automatic editorial guarantee. Read the funding and independence policies and inspect governance information.
Treating a subscription as a charitable donation
A subscription may purchase access, while a donation may support reporting without a product. The receipt and the publisher’s terms should tell you which one you made and what tax treatment applies.

Giving through an unverified intermediary
Start at the outlet’s own support page. If you use a platform, confirm the recipient identity, processing fees, tax treatment, refund policy and whether the payment reaches the newsroom or a separate campaign.
Missing a matching deadline
Campaign pages can remain visible after a match is exhausted. Check the current dates and remaining availability immediately before submitting payment.
Expecting an industry-wide “right” amount
There is no universal donation amount or standard return for positive-news publishers. Geography, legal status, audience size and revenue mix differ substantially. Compare the publisher’s current disclosures instead of using a generic benchmark.

Sharing more than the license permits
Copying text or images without permission can reduce the value of the original work and create legal risk. Share the link or obtain explicit republication rights.
A practical support plan
- Select two or three candidate outlets. Record their mission, geography, evidence standards and communities served.
- Read each outlet’s support, funding and independence pages. Save the date of the disclosures because policies and campaigns change.
- Choose one payment type. Set a recurring amount you can sustain, or make a one-time gift tied to a clear purpose.
- Check for a live match. Verify participation, dates, limits and the recipient before paying.
- Keep the receipt and terms. Note whether you bought access, made a donation or sponsored an event, and retain tax documentation where relevant.
- Participate beyond payment. Read newsletters, attend a community event, share permitted links and send useful corrections or local leads.
- Review once a year. Recheck financial reporting, editorial policies, coverage priorities and whether the outlet still matches your goals.
What to expect as the sector changes
Membership prices, matching windows, book prices and program availability can change. The 2026 INN figures show why publishers are diversifying, but they do not predict the finances of any one newsroom. Check current terms immediately before publication of your gift or renewal, and judge an outlet on transparent practices rather than on a single percentage, campaign slogan or feel-good story.
