Style a decorative lazy Susan as a small, intentional vignette: choose one anchor object, add only a few complementary accents, and leave open space around them. Decide whether the tray is for display or meal-time use first; trying to make it do both at once is a common way to make a table feel crowded.
Choose the tray’s job before adding anything
A lazy Susan can be a display, a place for shared serving, or a home for the condiments people reach for at that meal. Give it one primary role at a time. A decorative arrangement that also collects unrelated bottles, spare napkins, and one-off sauces quickly reads as storage rather than a centerpiece.
For everyday dining, keep only frequently used shared items on the tray. Move occasional sauces and objects that do not serve the meal elsewhere. For display between meals, a shallow bowl or low sculptural piece can provide a focal point without making the table feel imposing.
Build a simple arrangement around one anchor
Start with the largest piece
Choose one anchor object that suits the tray’s scale, such as a shallow bowl, a low vase, or a small sculptural object. General tray-styling guidance recommends placing the largest piece first, then deciding whether anything else is needed. Jennifer Davis, an interior designer and owner of Davis Interiors, told Homes & Gardens: “The tray acts as negative space control, allowing the eye to rest while still feeling intentional. Scale is critical here: a tray should feel generous.” That advice concerns trays generally, rather than lazy Susans specifically.

Add only a few supporting accents
If the anchor looks isolated, add one or two related pieces—for example, a small candle beside a bowl, or a modest greenery accent near a vase. A restrained difference in height or texture can make the grouping feel considered. Odd-number groupings are one stylist’s suggestion, not a rule; use fewer pieces if the tray looks better that way.
Keep the accents connected by a purpose, material, color, or mood. A personal object can make the display feel individual, but it should earn its place rather than become another item to work around.

Leave space and keep dining arrangements low
Visible tray surface is part of the composition, not a gap that needs filling. Leave room around the anchor and preserve open space beyond the tray for place settings and serving dishes. For a table in use, choose low pieces: tall objects can dominate the view, interrupt sightlines, and become awkward when the tray turns.
