Choose a cable or adapter only after checking the Pi model’s video connector. For a couch-friendly library interface, use Kodi on the Pi; to play files on a separate smart-TV app or streaming device, use a media server such as Plex and check compatibility with the receiving client.
Choose the right way to connect
| Route | Best for | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI + VLC | Playing a file with the Pi beside the TV | Pi connector, TV input, file playback requirements and audio output |
| HDMI + Kodi | Browsing a local or network media library on the TV | Kodi’s Raspberry Pi platform support and where the library is stored |
| Plex server + TV or streaming-device app | Serving a library to another device on the home network | Client-app availability, media-format support and whether the server must transcode |
These routes work differently: HDMI sends the Pi’s display and audio directly to the TV, while a server-and-client setup sends media over the network for another device to play.
Play a video directly on the TV with HDMI and VLC
Check the Pi’s video connector before choosing a cable
Identify your Raspberry Pi model and inspect its physical HDMI port, then check which HDMI input is available on the TV. Raspberry Pi’s setup guidance recommends connecting the screen through the Pi’s HDMI port and using an adapter if needed. The required cable or adapter depends on the board and TV; one HDMI cable does not fit every Raspberry Pi. Do not assume the Pi can output video over USB-C: Raspberry Pi’s documentation says no model supports video over USB-C DisplayPort Alt Mode.
Connect the display and open the video
- Turn off or safely shut down the Pi before connecting hardware, if practical. Connect the cable or adapter from the Pi’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Select that HDMI input on the TV, then start the Pi and sign in to Raspberry Pi OS.
- Open the video file from the file manager, or launch VLC and select the file. Raspberry Pi’s audio and video guide documents both approaches and says VLC is included with Raspberry Pi OS.
Raspberry Pi OS sends audio to the display over HDMI by default. If you hear no sound, check the TV’s selected input and volume, and the Pi’s audio-output selection.

Know which HDMI output to use
Raspberry Pi’s video documentation identifies HDMI-A-1 as the output for Zero and earlier model families, and HDMI-A-1 and HDMI-A-2 on models with two HDMI outputs. For ordinary desktop playback, follow the physical connector and display instructions for your specific board rather than relying on a console output name.
Use Kodi when you want a TV-friendly media library
Install a Raspberry Pi-compatible Kodi build when you want to browse a media library with a media-center interface rather than open files from the desktop. Connect the Pi to the TV over HDMI, then use Kodi to access media on local or network storage. The Kodi Foundation’s Raspberry Pi download page provides platform downloads and describes Kodi as a free, open-source player for digital media from local and network storage and the internet. The Foundation’s page states: “Kodi is a free and open source media player application developed by the Kodi Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium.”

Stream over your home network with a server and TV client
If the Pi stores or serves the files while a separate smart TV, TV app or streaming device plays them, use a server-and-client arrangement such as Plex. The TV-side app is the player; the Pi provides the library and media stream. Check that a compatible client app is available for the receiving device before choosing this route.
Plex describes three playback paths in its streaming overview: Direct Play, Direct Stream and transcoding. The client reports capabilities such as preferred formats and audio support, so the outcome depends on both the file and the receiving app or device. Plex may transcode unsupported audio, and incompatible subtitles may need to be burned into the video stream. Its media-format guidance explains these compatibility considerations. Do not assume every video will play on every smart TV. Direct HDMI playback with VLC or Kodi avoids relying on the TV app to support the file’s formats.

4K output is not a guarantee of smooth 4K playback
Raspberry Pi’s setup documentation says Raspberry Pi 4 and later support up to 4K on both HDMI outputs, with refresh rates depending on the model. That is an output capability, not a promise that every 4K file, codec, refresh rate and software setup will play smoothly. Check the board’s specifications and the video’s requirements for your particular setup.
Raw H.264 streams may need a container
Raspberry Pi’s video guidance notes that raw H.264 streams can play better in VLC when wrapped in a container such as MP4. It provides an FFmpeg example that copies the video into an MP4 container. This applies to raw camera streams; it is not a reason to re-encode every video.
