For a safe practice transfer, use a Testnet wallet connected to a Testnet server, send a small test payment, and confirm its final result in a validated ledger. Testnet XRP has no real-world value; a Testnet success does not mean a Mainnet payment has been sent.
How do I store XRP in a wallet?
A wallet is a way to manage access to an XRP Ledger account. The key decision is who controls the secret keys:
- Custodial wallet: A service holds or manages the keys or account arrangement. The provider may offer account recovery, but you rely on that provider and its transaction options.
- Non-custodial wallet: You control the secret keys and recovery material. That also makes you responsible for protecting them; if you lose the keys, you may lose access with no way to recover it.

Choose how the keys are stored
Custody and device type are separate choices. Hardware wallets store keys on a physical device; software wallets store them digitally on a connected device. Neither category removes every risk: provider security and malicious software updates can affect wallet safety. Before choosing a product, check its current manufacturer documentation for XRP support, the network and address formats you need, and whether it clearly displays tags, fees, and transaction status.

Protect the secret keys
Never share a seed or secret key with a person, website, support representative, or remote service. XRPL.org warns: “If others gain access to your secret keys, they have as much control over your accounts as you do, and can steal or destroy all your money.” Its Secure Signing guidance explains why key handling matters. If a wallet or client generates keys, use a trusted environment; secrets generated on another computer and sent over a network could be exposed.
How do I send a test XRP transaction?
Use the test network to check the workflow without risking a Mainnet payment. Keep test credentials separate from Mainnet credentials: test-network balances can disappear when a network is reset, and test XRP has no real-world value. Follow the official Send XRP tutorial for the client or wallet you use.

- Select Testnet and obtain test credentials. Use an official Testnet flow, and confirm the wallet or client is connected to a Testnet server—not Mainnet. Do not reuse Testnet credentials on Mainnet.
- Choose a test recipient and amount. Use an address you control or a recipient that explicitly accepts Testnet payments. Confirm the destination address and any required destination tag.
- Submit the payment. Review the network and recipient details before signing. Keep enough available balance for the transaction cost and any applicable reserve requirements; these can affect whether a payment succeeds.
- Check the final result. Use the wallet’s transaction details or look up the transaction, and confirm its outcome after it is recorded in a validated ledger.
How do I verify an XRP transaction?
A successful-looking initial submission response is not final confirmation. The XRPL send tutorial explains that a submission result is tentative and can change when the transaction is included in a validated ledger. Verify the final transaction result there; do not treat a preliminary response such as tesSUCCESS as proof of final validation.

- The destination address or required transaction fields are incorrect.
- The available balance is insufficient after transaction costs or reserve requirements.
- The client is connected to the wrong network or has lost its network connection.
A Testnet result confirms only that the test workflow worked on that network. It does not confirm that any Mainnet transaction was made.
Check the destination tag before sending real XRP
A destination tag is routing information, not proof of identity. A hosted exchange or service may use the address and tag together to identify which customer balance to credit. Before a real transfer, use the recipient service’s deposit screen as the authority for the address and tag requirements. XRPL.org explains tag use in its Require Destination Tags guide.

An X-address can encode a destination tag in the address itself. If your wallet parses the tag from an X-address, do not add a duplicate separate tag; follow the wallet and receiving service’s instructions. The XRPL basic data types reference describes this address format.

XRPL.org documents a standard transaction-cost minimum of 10 drops (as stated in its documentation checked in 2026). Network load can raise the cost, so inspect the fee immediately before signing. The fee is destroyed by the ledger, not paid to a validator or recipient. See the Transaction Cost documentation. Reserve requirements can also change, so check current network guidance rather than relying on a fixed amount.
