To store Bitcoin safely, choose who will control the keys, keep only routine spending funds in an internet-connected wallet, and make a private offline backup that you know how to restore. Bitcoin is recorded on the blockchain; a wallet manages the keys that authorize transactions. If you self-custody, the recovery phrase can restore access—and anyone who gets it may be able to spend the associated funds.

Choose a storage setup that matches how you will use Bitcoin

There is no setup that removes every risk. A practical choice weighs convenience against exposure, backup and recovery demands, and how much technical responsibility you can manage. Bitcoin.org describes using a hot wallet for a small spending amount and cold storage for savings.

Setup Useful for Key exposure and trade-offs
Hot software wallet Routine spending and convenience Keys are used on an internet-connected phone or computer, increasing exposure to malware or a compromised device. Keep only an amount appropriate for regular use.
Hardware wallet or other cold storage Longer-term savings when you want keys kept offline Requires operating a device and safeguarding its recovery backup. You must also follow the correct restore procedure.
Offline-signing setup People able to manage a more technical arrangement An offline computer signs transactions while a networked device broadcasts them. The online computer should not hold signing capability; setup and operation involve more steps.
Custodial exchange account Convenience when a third party manages the keys You depend on the custodian’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. This assigns risk differently from self-custody.

Before choosing, consider how the wallet handles keys, what backup format it uses and what can restore it, how you will confirm transactions, and whether you can reliably manage the recovery steps. Multisignature can require approvals from multiple independent keys—for example, three of five—but adds setup and recovery complexity, so it is not a default beginner feature. See Bitcoin.org’s Bitcoin FAQ and its guidance on securing a wallet.

Protect the recovery phrase like the keys themselves

A recovery phrase is a sequence of words used to restore a wallet. It is not a password-reset code: a person who obtains it may be able to access the associated Bitcoin. Keep it secret and offline. Bitcoin.org warns: “Never store your recovery phrase as a photo or in a cloud service, and never share it with anyone.”

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
  • Do not photograph or screenshot the phrase, save it in email or cloud storage, or send it in a message.
  • Do not enter it into a website, unsolicited recovery tool, or support chat. Legitimate support should not need it.
  • Write down or otherwise record the backup using the wallet maker’s documented method, then store it in a secure location on durable media.

More than one protected copy can reduce the risk that a single fire, theft, or misplaced backup makes recovery impossible. But every additional copy is another potential target. Choose locations and access arrangements deliberately; “durable” does not mean a particular material is guaranteed fireproof, waterproof, or indestructible. Bitcoin.org discusses secure locations and durable backup media.

Make a recovery plan before moving significant funds

Wallets differ, so do not assume every phrase or backup works with every wallet. Before relying on a backup, use the wallet’s current documentation to answer these questions:

  1. What exactly must be backed up? Identify the wallet’s backup format and which compatible software or devices can restore it.
  2. Does recovery require more than the phrase? Check whether the wallet uses an additional passphrase, multisignature setup, or other information needed to reconstruct access.
  3. Can you still reach the backup after a device failure? Keep copies arranged so a single incident or forgotten location does not eliminate every recovery path.
  4. Who needs to know how to locate it? If someone may need to assist with estate recovery, plan how they can find the backup without exposing it to people who do not need access.
  5. Have you checked the documented restore process? Follow the wallet’s legitimate instructions without exposing the phrase to a website, stranger, or unsolicited support channel.

Bitcoin Core illustrates why wallet-specific guidance matters: its documentation says one backup of an HD wallet can recover bitcoins, while periodic backups can preserve labels and other metadata that a blockchain rescan cannot recover. It also advises making a fresh backup after encrypting the wallet or changing its passphrase because a new seed is generated. Those are Bitcoin Core-specific instructions, not a rule for every wallet. See Bitcoin Core’s requirements and warnings and follow the current instructions for the wallet you use.

Understand what device loss or a scam means for recovery

If a phone or hardware wallet is lost or damaged, use the wallet maker’s documented restore instructions and a backup you secured in advance. There is no universal recovery procedure for every wallet. Do not give the phrase to someone claiming they can restore the device or unlock funds.

Bitcoin.org states: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” A legitimate support service will not ask for your recovery phrase or require Bitcoin as payment to unlock funds. Because Bitcoin transactions are irreversible, verify the destination and transaction details before sending. Read Bitcoin.org’s guidance on what you need to know and its FAQ.

Hardware wallets are an option, not a complete safety plan

A hardware wallet can keep signing keys offline, but buying one does not remove the need to secure its recovery backup, verify transactions, and understand restoration. Bitcoin.org’s directory describes the Trezor Safe 5 as having open-source firmware, on-device transaction confirmation, PIN and passphrase entry, and Multi-share Backup (SLIP-39). The listing also says the owner remains responsible for securing and backing up the wallet.

Keep the setup maintainable

  • Use the current documentation for your specific wallet and device; backup and recovery behavior can differ and change.
  • Keep an internet-connected spending wallet separate from longer-term savings if that division fits your needs.
  • Revisit backups when the wallet’s own instructions call for a change, such as Bitcoin Core’s guidance after encryption or passphrase changes.
  • Plan how an authorized person could locate recovery information if needed, while keeping the phrase secret from everyone else.
