Browser-based development tools do not all store projects the same way. Before working offline, identify whether your files are uncommitted edits held in browser storage, files in a local folder you authorized, or changes already committed to a remote repository. Commit and push repository work when connected, keep an independent copy of important files, and test what still works without a network. A cached editor page is not the same as an offline development environment.

Identify where the project is stored

“Browser-based” describes how you access an editor, not necessarily where its files live. Check which of these arrangements applies before closing a tab, switching devices, or disconnecting:

  • Remote repository opened in a web editor: edits may remain in browser local storage until you commit them. They are not automatically synced to another device. VS Code for the Web and GitHub’s github.dev documentation describe this commit-based persistence model: VS Code for the Web and GitHub’s github.dev editor.
  • User-selected local folder: some browsers let a web app access files or folders you explicitly select, subject to browser support and permission. This is an ordinary local project folder, not browser-origin storage.
  • App-managed browser storage: a web app may keep project data under its own origin. The origin private file system (OPFS), for example, is storage associated with a web origin; it is not your normal, visible project folder. MDN explains the distinction in its File System API documentation.
  • Remote cloud workspace: the editor may connect to a remote machine or service. Your browser is the interface, while the project files and development tools may be on that remote system.

If you are unsure, look for the editor’s workspace or repository indicator and its save, source-control, export, and offline documentation. Do not assume that “saved” means committed to a remote repository or copied to another device.

How the storage and sync options compare

Approach Useful for What it does not guarantee
Browser storage for remote edits Lightweight browsing and editing in a web editor Uncommitted work may remain in browser local storage; it is not a second-device backup.
User-selected local folder Working with ordinary local files in a compatible browser Access depends on browser support and granted permissions; it is distinct from OPFS.
Git repository with regular commits and pushes Version history and access from another device or environment Remote operations need connectivity, and uncommitted edits still need attention.
Offline-capable PWA shell Reopening cached app pages and resources without a connection A cached interface does not supply a remote repository, cloud runtime, terminal, dependencies, or build and debug services.
Cloud development environment Remote terminal, runtime, build, and debugging tools A remote workspace is not the same as having the project available locally offline.
Independent file backup A separate copy of exported project files It must be copied and updated; a backup drive does not sync an IDE automatically.

Make repository-backed work durable

For a project opened from a remote repository in github.dev or VS Code for the Web, use version control as the durable handoff—not an assumption that the browser will sync edits for you. GitHub recommends committing regularly; pushing makes the commit available through the remote repository when you are online.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Save your changes in the editor, then review the source-control view to see which files changed.
  2. Inspect the diff before committing. Confirm that the intended files are included and that no unfinished or sensitive files are being added accidentally.
  3. Commit a coherent unit of work with a message that will help you recognize it later.
  4. Push the commit when connected. A local or browser-held commit that has not reached the remote repository is not yet available to a second device through that repository.
  5. On another device, fetch or open the latest remote state before editing. If both devices have made changes, compare and reconcile them through version control rather than overwriting one copy blindly.

Keep branches or commit history understandable if you expect to move work between devices. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal automatic conflict-resolution guarantee for offline copies, so inspect conflicts before accepting a merge or replacement.

Use a local folder only when the browser supports it

If the project already exists as ordinary files on your computer, opening the folder through a browser file-access feature can keep the files in their usual location. The app needs your permission, and support varies by browser and product. VS Code’s documentation identifies Chrome and Edge for its local-folder workflow in the documented context; check the current VS Code for the Web documentation and the browser’s current File System API support information before relying on a particular setup.

Grant access only to the folder the project needs. Do not treat this flow as equivalent to OPFS: user-authorized folder access exposes selected local files, while OPFS is managed storage belonging to the website’s origin.

What offline access does—and does not—provide

A progressive web app can use a service worker to cache pages and resources such as scripts, styles, and images. That can help the app shell reopen while disconnected, but it does not automatically cache your project, make remote Git operations available, or provide a cloud machine’s terminal and runtime. MDN describes the relevant behavior in its guide to offline and background operation.

Background Sync can give a browser a chance to retry a short queued operation after connectivity returns. It is bounded: browsers limit retries and how long a service worker can run. It is therefore a best-effort mechanism, not a dependable way to continuously synchronize a large project or keep a development environment running offline.

VS Code for the Web does not provide a browser terminal or debugger. GitHub describes Codespaces as a VM-based development environment with a terminal for building and debugging, but that is remote compute, not offline local compute. See GitHub’s comparison of github.dev and Codespaces when deciding whether browser editing is enough or you need a fuller environment.

Protect browser-held work with a second copy

Browser-origin storage is best-effort by default. It may be evicted if the origin exceeds its quota, device storage is insufficient, or the user clears site data. An origin can request persistent storage, but that still should not be treated as an archival guarantee. MDN explains these conditions in Storage quotas and eviction criteria.

For work that matters, keep a copy outside the editor’s browser storage. A pushed repository is one option; exporting or copying project files to a user-controlled destination is another. A portable external SSD can hold such an exported copy, but it needs to be updated manually or through a separate backup process—it does not synchronize the browser IDE. Periodically open the backup to verify that it contains usable project files.

Test your offline workflow before relying on it

  1. Identify the project’s storage location and save or commit current edits.
  2. Export or copy important files to an independent destination, then confirm that the copy opens.
  3. While still connected, note which parts of the editor, project, and tools are available locally and which depend on remote services.
  4. Disconnect deliberately and try the tasks you expect to do offline: reopening the app, reading files, editing, and any local build or test workflow.
  5. Reconnect and reconcile edits through the project’s version-control or file-copy process. Review conflicts instead of assuming that queued changes merged safely.

This test separates three different needs: reading cached application resources, editing files available locally, and using compute or services that remain remote. If your offline task needs a terminal, dependencies, build tools, or a debugger, confirm that those are installed and usable locally; an editor tab alone does not provide them.
