These steps can reduce interruptions, but no filter guarantees that every unwanted text will be stopped.
What to do when a suspicious text arrives
- Don’t engage with a suspicious message. Don’t click its links or provide personal, account, or financial information. If it might be legitimate, contact the organization using a phone number or website you already know is genuine—not contact details in the text. The FTC’s guidance on spam texts recommends this approach.
- Filter unknown senders or block repeat senders. Filtering can move messages or suppress notifications; blocking targets a particular sender. Use both as appropriate.
- Report the text. In the U.S., you can forward it to 7726 (SPAM), report it in your messaging app, or submit it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. These are separate reporting routes.
Reporting does not always block the sender. Apple says reporting a message by itself does not prevent further messages, so block a known repeat sender separately.
How to filter or block texts on an iPhone
Screen messages from unknown senders
In Messages, tap Filter, then Manage Filtering, and turn on Screen Unknown Senders. Depending on your settings and iOS version, unknown-sender messages may go to a separate folder and notifications may be suppressed. Where available, Text Message Filter can sort unknown SMS, MMS, or RCS messages into Transactions and Promotions folders. Apple says these filters don’t apply to a sender you’ve replied to three times or more.
Block or report a sender
Open the conversation or sender details in Messages to find the available block and report controls. Apple’s instructions and options can vary by iOS version, carrier, and region. Reporting SMS, MMS, or RCS messages depends on carrier and country or region; if the report option is unavailable, Apple directs users to their carrier.

And if a new or spoofed number gets through, the large “BLOCK NOW” button makes it easy to instantly block it - up to 1,500 additional numbers at your command.
- Realistic & Reliable Protection: While no device can stop 100% of spam (scammers constantly change numbers), the V5000 gives you the power to shut down repeat offenders quickly and effectively - offering more control than passive filters alone.
- Hassle-Free Design: NO POWER supply needed, NO APP, and NO SUBSCRIPTIONS. The V5000 is easy to install, with a clear screen and loud button click for extra confidence. Designed with seniors in mind, it’s ready to use and simple to maintain. For even stronger protection, you can pair it with your phone provider’s spam filtering service.
Reporting an iMessage sends sender information to Apple and permanently deletes the message from the iPhone. Apple says a mistakenly reported message can be recovered from Spam. For the current steps, see Apple’s guide to reporting spam and blocking senders in Messages and Apple’s guide to screening and filtering text messages.
How to block or report spam in Google Messages on Android
In Google Messages, touch and hold a conversation and choose Block, then confirm. To report spam, use the report-spam option when it appears. Google’s report-as-spam flow also blocks the sender and moves the conversation to Spam & blocked; Google says you can also report spam without blocking the contact. Labels and steps may vary by Android version and app interface.

Which reporting route should you use?
| Route | What it does | Useful qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Forward to 7726 (SPAM) | Shares the message with your wireless provider to help it identify and block similar messages. | U.S. reporting route; it is not the same as blocking the sender on your phone. |
| Report in the messaging app | Submits the message through the app’s reporting process. Some app flows also block the sender. | Whether reporting blocks depends on the app. Apple says its report action alone does not prevent further messages. |
| ReportFraud.ftc.gov | Submits a report to the FTC. | Reporting is not a phone-level filter or a guarantee that messages will stop. |
The FTC describes all three reporting options in its spam-text guidance. Don’t reply STOP to every suspicious text. For expected messages from a business you trust, use its unsubscribe mechanism only when you’re confident the message is genuine.

When to check carrier or third-party filtering
Your wireless provider may offer tools or services to block calls and texts, and some call-blocking apps also filter texts. Check the provider’s current options and any app’s supported message types, data practices, availability, and cost before enabling or paying for a service. Features differ by device, operating system, carrier, app, and region; no specific service is established here as a recommendation.
FCC materials describe provider blocking requirements for certain texts highly likely to be illegal, including messages that purport to come from numbers on a reasonable do-not-originate list. This is a limited provider-level protection, not a guarantee against all spam texts. Keep using phone and app controls and report suspicious messages as needed.
