To stop Samsung Gallery’s AI editing tools, open Settings > Galaxy AI > Photo assist and switch Photo assist off. Depending on your Galaxy model and One UI version, the same control may be under Settings > Advanced features > Galaxy AI or Settings > Advanced features > Intelligent features. Then restart the phone or tablet. Also inspect Gallery > Settings for a Photo Assist, Edit suggestions, or similar switch, because Samsung can place AI controls inside individual apps.
If Gallery is only displaying options such as Remaster or Erase reflections, it has not necessarily changed the file. Those suggestions require you to open the suggestion and complete the apply flow. The instructions below separate displayed recommendations, applied edits, cloud processing, and protection of your original image.
How do I turn off Samsung Gallery AI photo editing?
The main switch is Photo assist. Turning it off removes the central control for generative editing and related Photo Assist functions on devices that expose the setting.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Galaxy AI. If that item is not visible, open Advanced features, then choose Galaxy AI or Intelligent features.
- Tap Photo assist.
- Turn the switch off.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
Samsung notes that screens and labels can differ by device model, wireless provider, and software version. If Photo assist is not listed, continue with the alternate locations and Gallery-specific controls below rather than assuming the feature is active or unavailable.

This setting is a feature control, not a deletion command. Turning it off does not remove photographs already stored in Gallery, and it does not automatically erase generated copies. It changes whether the relevant Photo Assist tools remain available on your build.
Where is Photo assist on different Galaxy phones?
Samsung has moved Galaxy AI controls between One UI releases. Start with the current Galaxy AI page, then check the following alternatives:
- Settings > Galaxy AI > Photo assist
- Settings > Advanced features > Galaxy AI > Photo assist
- Settings > Advanced features > Intelligent features, followed by a Photo Assist or photo-editing control
- Gallery > Menu or Settings, where a Photo Assist, Edit suggestions, or related switch may be provided
Use the Settings search field for “Galaxy AI,” “Photo assist,” or “intelligent features” if the category is difficult to find. Search results and labels still depend on the installed software, so open the matching control and read its description before changing it.
A missing switch can have several explanations: your model may use another label, your software build may place the option elsewhere, or that model may not include the feature. Samsung’s support documentation repeatedly qualifies Galaxy AI availability by model, software version, and provider, so the menu on one Galaxy phone is not a reliable map for every other phone.
Is Samsung Gallery editing photos automatically, or only showing suggestions?
Seeing an AI recommendation is different from applying an edit. In Samsung’s documented Edit suggestions flow, Gallery shows a suggestion only when one is available for the image; you must open the photo, swipe up, tap a suggestion, and follow the prompts before a result is generated.
- Open the photo in Gallery.
- Swipe up to open the photo details and available suggestions.
- Review options such as Remaster, Live effect, or Erase reflections when they appear.
- Do not tap a suggestion if you do not want that operation.
If a thumbnail or details screen merely advertises a suggestion, the original file has not been edited by that display alone. A recommendation can remain visible because Gallery found a possible improvement; it is not evidence that a new file was saved. Disable Photo assist or a matching Gallery setting if you do not want the suggestions visible, but do not treat the presence of the recommendation as proof that an edit was saved.
How can I stop Edit suggestions from appearing?
There are two approaches: leave the feature available and ignore individual suggestions, or turn off the controls that your software exposes.

Ignore a suggestion without changing settings
Open the photo, swipe up, and leave the Remaster, Live effect, or Erase reflections suggestion untouched. No apply action is completed, so Gallery has no generated result to save. This is the least disruptive choice if you occasionally want to use an enhancement.

Disable the related controls
- Open Settings > Galaxy AI, or use one of the Advanced features paths if Galaxy AI is nested there.
- Turn off Photo assist.
- Open Gallery > Settings and look for a separate Photo Assist, Edit suggestions, or similarly named switch.
- Disable the Gallery-level control if your build provides one.
- Restart the device so the changed settings take effect.
Samsung says some AI features can be disabled directly in individual apps, including Gallery, while other integrated functions may not expose an independent switch. Consequently, disabling Photo assist may remove the main editing entry point without eliminating every AI-related label in every Gallery screen. If a suggestion remains after the restart, verify that it is only a displayed recommendation and check whether a second Gallery-level switch is present.
How do I keep Samsung from overwriting the original photo?
When you intentionally use an AI tool, choose Save as copy or Save copy instead of replacing the source. The wording varies with One UI version, but the purpose is the same: create a separate generated file and retain the original image.
Use the comparison controls
After an edit, Gallery may provide Show previous or Show Original. Use that control to compare the generated result with the source before sharing or deleting anything. If the result is not acceptable, keep the source and remove only the generated copy.
A safe editing routine
- Open the original in Gallery and confirm that you are working on the intended file.
- Apply the desired AI tool only if you want the change.
- Choose Save as copy or Save copy when prompted.
- Use Show previous or Show Original to check the difference.
- Share or organize the generated copy, leaving the source untouched.
Do not rely on the appearance of an AI watermark, a changed file size, or a new thumbnail as your only record of the source. The explicit save-copy option is the dependable step for preserving it. If you already saved over an image, look immediately for Show Original or another copy before making further edits.
Generated images can include a Galaxy AI watermark. Samsung also documents that Generative Edit results may be resized to as much as 12 megapixels, so a saved AI copy can differ from the source in both appearance and dimensions even when the original remains intact.
Can I keep Galaxy AI editing but prevent cloud processing?
On supported devices, turn on Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device. This is a privacy-oriented processing choice, not a complete Photo assist shutdown: it can limit cloud use while leaving some AI controls available.

Samsung’s FAQ distinguishes Gallery Edit suggestions from most other functions: Edit suggestions are handled on-device, while many other capabilities, including image editing, may use the cloud. The processing switch and the exact set of functions it covers vary by device and software version, so read the description shown on your own Galaxy AI page before relying on it as a universal offline guarantee.

What Galaxy versions support these controls?
Samsung’s US Gallery documentation describes the AI editing experience on select devices running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or higher. Later One UI releases may use different labels or add and remove controls. A device can therefore show Gallery suggestions, Photo assist, or neither, depending on its model and installed software.
- Model: Galaxy AI features are limited to selected devices, not every Galaxy phone or tablet.
- Software: Android and One UI versions affect both availability and menu placement.
- Provider: Samsung warns that wireless-provider software can change the screens you see.
- Account and connection: Samsung’s documented Gallery AI experience requires a Samsung account and an internet connection.
These requirements explain why instructions copied from another Galaxy device may not match your menus. Use the closest path available on your build and check both the system Galaxy AI page and Gallery’s own settings. Updating software can also change labels or locations, so recheck the setting after a major One UI update.
Why does an AI copy look different from the original?
There are several documented reasons. Generative Edit can produce a new image rather than modify the source, and Samsung says those generated results may be resized to up to 12MP. A Galaxy AI watermark can also be added to generated images. Save-copy behavior, resizing, and watermarking are properties of the generated result; they do not mean that the original file was silently replaced.
For important photographs, retain the source and treat every AI result as a separate derivative. The Show previous or Show Original control is useful for a quick visual check, but preserving the original copy is the stronger safeguard if the image may later be printed, archived, or edited elsewhere. Check resolution and framing before using a generated copy for a large print or a professional workflow.
What should I do if Gallery still appears to edit photos?
Work through the symptom rather than repeatedly toggling unrelated settings.
You see Remaster or another recommendation
That is a suggestion, not an applied edit. Do not tap it. If you want the recommendation removed, disable Photo assist and inspect Gallery settings for a second suggestions switch.
You applied an edit and cannot find the source
Look for a separate generated image and use Show previous or Show Original in Gallery. For future edits, select Save as copy or Save copy before confirming the operation. Avoid editing the generated copy again until you have identified and retained the source.

The Photo assist switch is missing
Check Settings > Advanced features > Galaxy AI, then Settings > Advanced features > Intelligent features, and finally Gallery > Settings. If none contains the control, your model or software build may not expose it; Samsung’s availability notes make that a supported possibility. The absence of a switch does not prove that Gallery is changing files automatically.

The switch changed but behavior did not
Restart the phone or tablet after disabling the feature. Samsung specifically recommends a restart so the change takes effect. If an integrated AI function remains, it may be one of the functions that cannot be disabled separately on that build. Check whether the remaining item is a recommendation display rather than an applied edit.
You want privacy rather than a complete shutdown
Use Process data only on device when that option is available, and check the explanatory text for the specific functions covered. This can address cloud-processing concerns without requiring you to turn off every AI control.
Another Samsung app is changing content
Galaxy AI controls can be placed inside individual apps. If the behavior is in Camera, Notes, Messages, Phone, Samsung Health, or SmartThings rather than Gallery, open that app’s settings and look for its own AI control. The Gallery Photo assist switch is not a universal switch for every Samsung application.
Does disabling Galaxy AI affect other phone functions?
Samsung warns that disabling AI features may affect device performance and functionality. The practical impact depends on which control you turn off and which model you use: a Photo assist switch primarily concerns Gallery editing, while broader Galaxy AI controls can cover additional integrated features. If another app’s AI behavior is the problem, inspect that app’s own settings instead of assuming the Gallery switch controls it.
Before disabling a broad control, note which functions you use. You can test Gallery after the restart and leave unrelated AI controls enabled if your device presents separate switches. Samsung’s warning is general; the exact effect is determined by the feature and software build.

For a device used mainly for photography, choose the policy that matches your priority:
- No AI editing: Turn off Photo assist, disable any Gallery-level suggestions switch, and restart.
- Manual access: Leave the controls on, but apply a suggestion only after reviewing it and always save the result as a copy.
- Reduced cloud exposure: Enable Process data only on device where supported, then verify which features remain available.
- Maximum original protection: Never replace the source; use Save as copy and compare with Show previous or Show Original.
These choices are independent. You can disable editing, keep editing available but use copies, or retain selected AI tools while restricting processing, subject to the controls provided by your Galaxy model and One UI version.

- Confirm the Photo assist switch is off, or document that your model does not provide it.
- Check Gallery settings for a second Photo Assist or Edit suggestions control.
- Restart the device.
- Open a test photograph and swipe up; distinguish a visible suggestion from an applied result.
- If testing an edit, save it as a copy and compare it with Show previous or Show Original.
- Review the Galaxy AI processing setting if cloud use is your concern.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will turning off Photo assist delete photos that are already in Gallery?
No. The setting controls access to the Photo Assist feature; it is not a file-deletion command. Existing originals and generated copies remain in Gallery unless you remove them yourself.

Can I undo an AI edit after I saved over a picture?
Use Gallery’s Show previous or Show Original option if it is offered for that image. If no original is available, recovery depends on whether another copy exists in Gallery, cloud backup, or another storage location.
Does Process data only on device make every Galaxy AI feature work offline?
No. Samsung describes the switch as limiting processing where supported, and individual features have different requirements. Some functions may still require an internet connection, an account, or may be unavailable on your model.

For a complete Gallery shutdown, turn off Settings > Galaxy AI > Photo assist (or its Advanced features equivalent), check Gallery’s own settings, and restart. If you only see Remaster or similar suggestions, do not tap them. Whenever you do use an AI tool, choose Save as copy and keep the original; use Process data only on device separately if your priority is limiting cloud processing.
