If five instances of the same React logo show the wrong mask, gradient, or clipped shape, the usual cause is a duplicated SVG id. References such as mask='url(#logo-mask)' are resolved by an identifier that is global to the document, not local to one component. Rendering the component five times therefore creates five definitions competing for the same lookup key.

React’s useId Hook is the intended fix for reusable components. Generate one ID per component instance, derive every related SVG and accessibility ID from that value, and keep the server and client component trees identical when using SSR. This prevents collisions while preserving hydration, ARIA relationships, and references such as mask, fill, and clip-path.

Why do repeated SVG logos use the wrong mask?

An SVG reference like url(#logo-mask) does not point to a variable inside a React component. The browser looks for an element whose id is logo-mask in the document. That lookup is effectively document-wide, so a hard-coded ID is unsafe as soon as a reusable component can appear more than once.

Definitions are hidden, but their IDs are not scoped

Elements inside <defs> are not painted directly, yet their identifiers still participate in the document’s ID namespace. If each logo renders <mask id='logo-mask'>, the page contains multiple elements with the same key. The browser is then free to resolve a URL fragment to an unintended definition. Depending on DOM order and rendering changes, one logo may borrow another logo’s mask, gradient, pattern, or clip path.

Why can the first render look correct?

With duplicate IDs, behavior can appear stable until a later render changes the DOM order. A route transition, conditional component, lazy-loaded section, or hydration update can alter which duplicate definition is found first. The visual symptom is often described as “it worked on the initial page load” even though the markup was invalid for a repeated component from the beginning.

Does React useId make SVG IDs unique?

Yes. useId returns an ID associated with that particular component instance, so each rendered logo receives a different base value. React recommends it for components that may be rendered more than once because IDs must be unique on the page.

Use one generated base and add suffixes

Call the Hook at the top level of the component, then derive names for the mask, title, and any other related nodes from the same base. This keeps all references in one instance connected without creating separate random values that could drift apart.

import { useId } from 'react';

export function Logo() {
  const id = useId();
  const maskId = `${id}-mask`;
  const titleId = `${id}-title`;

  return (
    <svg aria-labelledby={titleId} role='img'>
      <title id={titleId}>Our logo</title>
      <defs>
        <mask id={maskId}>
          {/* mask content */}
        </mask>
      </defs>
      <g mask={`url(#${maskId})`}>
        {/* logo paths */}
      </g>
    </svg>
  );
}

When React renders this component five times, each instance gets its own base ID and therefore its own -mask and -title IDs. The mask attribute is built from the same value used by the definition, so it cannot accidentally point at a sibling instance’s mask.

Do not call useId conditionally

Hooks must be called in the same order on every render. Put useId() directly in the component body, not inside an event handler, loop, condition, or nested function. If a logo has optional artwork, keep the ID call unconditional and conditionally render only the elements that use it.

How should I replace hard-coded IDs in an existing logo?

Make the change systematically so every document-level reference is updated, not just the mask that first exposed the bug.

  1. Inventory each definition. Search the SVG for id= inside <defs> and for references such as url(#...), aria-labelledby, aria-describedby, for, href, and xlink:href.
  2. Create one base ID. Add const id = useId(); at the top of the component. Do not generate a separate value for every definition.
  3. Derive stable names. Use readable suffixes such as ${id}-mask, ${id}-clip, ${id}-gradient, and ${id}-title. Replace the matching definition IDs and every reference to them.
  4. Update accessibility links. If the SVG has a <title> or description, give it a derived ID and point aria-labelledby or aria-describedby at that value. A unique mask with a duplicated title ID still leaves an accessibility collision.
  5. Render several copies in one test page. Place five logos in different parts of the tree, including a conditional or delayed copy. Inspect the final DOM and verify that every generated ID is different.
  6. Test navigation and hydration. If the application uses SSR, load the page directly, hydrate it, and navigate away and back. Compare the references after each transition rather than checking only the first paint.

What is the best fix for duplicate SVG IDs?

The right choice depends on the uniqueness scope you need and whether the component is server-rendered. The following options are not interchangeable.

Approach Uniqueness scope Client-only rendering SSR and hydration Main risk
Hard-coded ID such as logo-mask None; every instance collides Unsafe Unsafe Wrong definition is selected when the component repeats
Module-level counter Usually one JavaScript module instance Can work in limited cases Fragile Server and client counters can start at different values; separate bundles or roots can collide
Random value generated during render Potentially document-wide Works only if generated once and retained Unsafe by default Different server and client values cause hydration mismatches
useId Stable per React component instance Recommended Designed for SSR when trees match IDs contain colons, which need care in CSS selectors
useId plus an application prefix Per instance plus root or application namespace Recommended for multiple roots Recommended with matching identifierPrefix Prefix must be identical between server rendering and hydration

A counter or random UUID may appear to solve a browser-only demo, but they do not provide React’s server/client agreement. For a reusable component that can be rendered by an SSR framework, useId is the dependable baseline.

How does useId behave during server rendering and hydration?

React derives the generated value from the component tree, allowing server output and client hydration to agree without relying on a mutable global counter. That guarantee has a strict requirement: the server and client must render an identical component tree.

Keep the tree identical

Do not render a logo only on the server, insert an extra wrapper only in the browser, or branch on a browser-only value before hydration. Adding or removing a component changes the sequence from which React derives IDs. Move browser-dependent work into an effect or render the same placeholder on both sides until the client is ready.

Namespace multiple React roots

If several independent React applications share one HTML document, each root should receive a distinct identifierPrefix. Pass the same prefix to the server renderer that produced that root’s HTML and to its hydrateRoot call. For example, a marketing root could use marketing- while an account root uses account-. Without separate prefixes, two otherwise correct React trees can still produce overlapping IDs across the page.

// Browser hydration

The prefix is a namespace, not a replacement for the Hook. Continue to derive mask, clip, gradient, and ARIA IDs from the component’s useId value.

Can I use a useId value in CSS selectors?

React’s generated strings include colons. Colons are valid in HTML id attributes, but they are not interpreted as ordinary characters by CSS selector syntax and APIs such as querySelectorAll. A selector containing an unescaped generated ID can therefore fail or match something different.

Prefer references that do not need selector escaping

For SVG, put the generated value directly in the JSX attribute, as in mask={`url(#${maskId})`}. For imperative DOM work, use a React ref or document.getElementById(id) rather than constructing a CSS selector.

Escape only when a selector is unavoidable

If a library requires a selector string, escape the ID with the platform’s CSS escaping facility before passing it to querySelector or querySelectorAll. Do not strip the colons from the ID after React has generated it; changing the value in one place but not another recreates the original mismatch.

Why might duplicate IDs still appear after client-side navigation?

A framework can introduce a second problem even when the component uses useId correctly. A reported issue in a current Next.js Server Components setup describes duplicate generated IDs after client-side navigation, affecting SVG fill, mask, and clip-path references as well as ARIA relationships.

Treat that behavior as version-specific, not as a general property of React. Record the exact React and framework versions, reproduce the problem with two or more copies of the component, and compare the server HTML with the DOM after navigation. Check the framework’s issue tracker and release notes for the versions you actually deploy, and reduce the case to a minimal route before changing the component’s ID scheme.

How do I troubleshoot a logo that changes after navigation?

Use the symptom to narrow the cause instead of redesigning the SVG blindly.

Symptom Likely cause What to check
All copies show the same mask or gradient Hard-coded duplicate definition IDs Search the DOM for repeated values in id attributes and replace them with useId-derived names
Only one route or modal is wrong DOM order changes which duplicate is resolved Inspect the page after opening and closing the modal or navigating; compare the order of matching IDs
Hydration warning or flash of incorrect artwork Server and client trees differ, or IDs were generated randomly Remove render-time randomness and make conditional branches identical until after hydration
SVG is correct, but an accessibility tool reports a duplicate target ARIA IDs were left hard-coded Derive title and description IDs from the same base as the SVG definitions
Imperative code cannot find an element A colon-containing ID was used as an unescaped CSS selector Use a ref or getElementById, or escape the selector before querying
Two embedded apps collide despite using useId Independent roots share the same namespace Assign distinct identifierPrefix values and use each consistently on server and client

What should I verify before shipping a reusable SVG component?

  • Render at least five instances in one document, including instances created conditionally and after a delayed load.
  • Confirm that every definition ID is unique in the final DOM, not just in the source JSX.
  • Check mask, fill, clip-path, filter, pattern, and gradient references for the correct derived suffix.
  • Check aria-labelledby, aria-describedby, and any label relationships for the same uniqueness property.
  • Run a server-rendered build with hydration and verify that no client-only branch changes the component tree before hydration completes.
  • If there are multiple React roots, configure a distinct and matching identifierPrefix for each one.
  • Exercise client-side navigation, modal mounting, and unmounting; these are common points where duplicate definitions become visible.
  • Keep generated IDs in JSX references rather than querying them with unescaped CSS selectors.

The practical rule is simple: every reusable SVG instance needs its own namespaced definition IDs, and every reference must be built from the same namespace. useId supplies that namespace in a way that can survive normal React rendering and SSR, provided the component tree and root prefixes remain consistent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix duplicate SVG IDs by adding a random suffix with Math.random()?

That may separate browser-only copies, but it can produce different markup on the server and client and trigger hydration problems. It also makes debugging and snapshot tests unstable; use useId for React-rendered markup instead.

Do IDs inside an inline SVG need to be unique across separate web pages?

No. The collision happens within one document. If the same SVG is loaded as an external image file, its internal IDs are isolated from the embedding page, but inline SVG instances share the page’s document namespace.

Should I put one shared mask in a top-level SVG and reuse it everywhere?

You can share a definition intentionally when every consumer truly needs identical geometry and coordinates. Keep it in one controlled location and document the dependency; per-instance masks are safer when props, themes, or dimensions can vary.

Will changing an SVG id affect bookmarks or browser history?

An element ID can be used as a URL fragment target, so changing a public anchor ID may affect deep links. Internal IDs used only by SVG definitions and ARIA relationships normally have no bookmark contract, but audit your markup before renaming any value referenced outside the component.
