Adults in the EU and UK can generally submit an objection to Meta’s use of their public Facebook and Instagram content for AI training. If you’re in the United States or another region, the available sources do not establish a universal opt-out. You can still reduce what is publicly visible, but changing post visibility is not the same as filing a formal objection—and neither action guarantees that information already used to train a model will be removed.
This guide explains who can object, where to look for the form, what content the request concerns, and what practical steps are available if the form isn’t offered for your account.
What does Meta use public posts for?
Meta has announced that it uses public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram to develop, train, or improve its generative-AI systems in regions where the relevant process applies. Meta’s EU announcement described public posts and comments; its UK announcement also referred to public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram. (Meta Newsroom, April 14, 2025 and September 2024.)

It notes that resulting models may be used beyond Meta’s social networks, including for the Llama language model. (Hamburg data-protection authority, May 27, 2025.)

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“Public” is the key qualifier. The regulator describes public posts as material whose visibility the user has not restricted. That means the relevant question is not simply whether you uploaded something, but also who could see it under its audience setting. A public photo or comment is different from a post limited to friends or another narrower audience.
Meta has also said that interactions users choose to share with Meta AI features may be used to train or improve those systems. That is a separate category from public Facebook or Instagram posts, so changing a post’s audience does not address what you voluntarily send to an AI feature.
Who can submit a formal objection?
The formal objection route is principally documented for eligible adults in the European Union and the United Kingdom. Meta announced an objection process for adults in the EU and an objection form for adults in the UK. Availability may depend on the country, age, account, and product, so check the Privacy Center while logged into the Facebook or Instagram account concerned.

- EU: Meta announced an objection process for adult users in the European Union.
- UK: Meta announced an objection form for adults in the United Kingdom.
- United States and other regions: The available sources do not establish a universal formal opt-out for every country. Current reporting describes the formal route as region-limited, so do not assume a form shown in another country is available to you.
Do not rely on an old screenshot, a link copied from a third-party guide, or a form that appears while logged into a different account. Meta’s menus and form availability can vary across regions, accounts, Facebook, Instagram, web, and mobile. The Hamburg data-protection authority published the Facebook and Instagram objection-form destinations in its May 27, 2025 notice, but checking Meta’s own Privacy Center from the relevant account is the more reliable starting point when labels or eligibility may have changed.
How do I find and submit Meta’s objection form?
If you are an eligible adult in the EU or UK, look for the objection option in Meta’s Privacy Center or the relevant account settings. The exact labels can change, but the process is generally to open the account whose data is at issue, find Meta’s information about AI or how it uses information, and submit the available objection form.

- Sign in to the right account. Open Facebook or Instagram using the account whose public content you want covered. If you use both services, check each account rather than assuming that a request submitted from one automatically covers the other.
- Open account privacy settings. Look under Settings and privacy or open the account’s Privacy Center. The path and wording may differ between the app and website.
- Find the AI information section. Look for a section about Meta AI, generative AI, or how Meta uses information for AI. Follow the objection or objection-form option if it appears.
- State the objection clearly. Explain that you object to the use of your public Facebook or Instagram information to develop, train, or improve Meta’s generative-AI systems. Use the form’s own prompts, and do not add sensitive personal information that is not necessary to identify or explain the request.
- Submit and keep a record. Save any confirmation email, on-screen confirmation, or reference information. Keep the date and note which account and service you used, so you can distinguish a submitted request from a form you only opened.
Meta said in its April 14, 2025 EU announcement that it would honor objection forms it had already received as well as newly submitted ones. That is Meta’s statement about its process; it should not be read as a promise that an objection erases data already incorporated into a model.
If you cannot find the form, first confirm that you are logged into the account you mean to cover and review the Privacy Center for that account. If the option still does not appear, your region, age, account, or the current product interface may not make it available. Do not treat an unrelated privacy control or a third-party form as an equivalent formal objection.

What can you do if you’re in the US or don’t see the form?
If Meta does not offer you a formal objection route, the practical option is to limit public exposure. These steps can reduce what remains publicly visible, but they do not establish that Meta has deleted material already collected or reverse completed model training.
- Narrow the audience for future posts. Choose a non-public audience instead of making posts public by default. The audience setting controls visibility; it is not a universal opt-out from all AI-related processing.
- Review older public material. Check older posts, comments, photos, videos, and captions, not only new posts. Public content can remain visible long after it was originally shared.
- Remove or restrict sensitive public content. Consider whether public material exposes private details you no longer want broadly visible. Deleting or restricting a post can change its visibility on the service, but the available sources do not establish that it removes material already used in training.
- Be cautious about what you send to Meta AI. Meta has separately said that interactions users choose to share with its AI features may be used to train or improve systems. Avoid volunteering sensitive information in those interactions.
- Recheck the Privacy Center periodically. Regional availability and menu wording can change. A setting or form that is absent today could be presented differently later, but do not assume a change has occurred without checking the account.
These are exposure-reduction steps, not substitutes for a formal objection. In particular, making an account private or changing a post audience should not be described as proof that information was never collected, or as confirmation that previously trained models have been changed.
Do public posts, private messages, and Meta AI chats get treated the same way?
No. They are separate categories, and the available guidance does not support treating one setting as a control over all three.

| Information type | What the available sources say | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Public Facebook and Instagram content | Meta’s EU and UK announcements focus on public content shared by adults. The Hamburg regulator lists posts, comments, photos, videos, and captions. | Eligible adults in the EU or UK can look for the formal objection form. In any region, restricting visibility can reduce public exposure going forward. |
| Ordinary private conversations | Current privacy guidance distinguishes ordinary private conversations from public posts; they are not the main subject of the public-content training announcements. | Do not assume the public-post objection description explains every kind of private-message processing. Check the relevant privacy information for the specific feature and data type. |
| Information shared with Meta AI | Meta says interactions users choose to share with Meta AI features may be used to train or improve its systems. | Be selective about what you voluntarily share with an AI feature. A public-post audience change does not address those interactions. |
This distinction matters when deciding what action to take. A public post’s audience setting concerns who can see that post. An objection form concerns the described use of public information for AI. A conversation with an AI feature is a separate interaction, so do not assume that an objection about public posts automatically covers every product interaction unless the form or applicable privacy information says so.

Does making Facebook or Instagram private stop AI training?
Making posts non-public reduces their public visibility, which is relevant because Meta’s described training scope centers on public content. But the sources do not establish that changing an account to private removes content already collected or prevents all processing of information that was public before the change.
Review individual post audiences as well as the account’s general settings. Older material may have been shared under a different audience, and changing future defaults does not necessarily update every earlier post. Also remember that a private account cannot control a separate public post made by another person that mentions, depicts, or quotes you.
Use privacy settings to control what is visible now and in the future. If a formal objection is available to you, submit it separately; do not treat a visibility change as confirmation that Meta received or accepted an objection.
Can Meta use old Facebook photos, comments, or Instagram posts?
The announcements and regulator explanation concern public content shared by adults, but the supplied sources do not define a cutoff date that would let a user safely assume older public material is excluded. For that reason, review older public posts and media as well as new material, and submit an objection if the official route is available for your account.

Changing or deleting an old post can reduce what is publicly visible on the service, but it is not a guarantee that the post was never accessed or used earlier. The available privacy guidance also does not promise that an objection will remove content already incorporated into a trained model. Keep those limits separate: a post’s current visibility, Meta’s handling of information, and a model’s prior training are not the same thing.
What does an objection change—and what does it not guarantee?
An objection is a formal request concerning the described use of your public information for AI. It is stronger and more specific than simply changing an audience setting, but it is not a guaranteed rollback of training that has already taken place.
Current privacy guidance says an objection should be understood as affecting future processing, not as a promise to retrain a model or erase information already incorporated into one. Do not interpret a confirmation that Meta received a form as evidence that a trained model has been undone. Likewise, removing a public post does not by itself confirm that Meta has removed any data previously collected from it.
There is another limit: your settings govern material you control, not necessarily public content posted by someone else. The available sources do not establish a universal remedy for every third-party post that mentions, depicts, or quotes you. If the concern is a particular image, quotation, or identifying detail, review the original post’s visibility and use the platform’s relevant reporting or privacy channels where appropriate; do not assume your own account’s audience settings will change another person’s post.
Does Meta’s business-account update affect personal accounts?
A report published by Digital Camera World on October 27, 2026 said Meta delayed a proposed terms update after backlash from creators and publishers. The report concerned public business accounts and a proposed change; it is not evidence of a finalized rule covering every personal account.

Keep that report separate from the documented EU and UK objection process for public content shared by adults. Do not assume a proposed business-account change replaces the Privacy Center process, changes the scope of every personal account, or creates a new global opt-out. For your own account, rely on the current in-account privacy information and any official notice that specifically applies to your region and account type.
Which action should you take?
Choose the action based on your location and the type of information you are concerned about. The most important distinction is whether you can submit a formal objection or only reduce future public exposure.
| Your situation | Best next action | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| You are an adult in the EU or UK and the form appears | Submit the objection through the account’s Privacy Center or AI information section, then retain the confirmation. | It does not guarantee deletion from models trained before the request. |
| You are in the US or another region and no form appears | Review older public content, narrow future audiences, and avoid sharing sensitive information with Meta AI. | These controls are not proof of a formal objection or removal of previously used material. |
| Your concern is an ordinary private conversation | Check the privacy information for the relevant messaging feature rather than assuming the public-content process covers it. | The public-post announcements do not settle every question about private-message processing. |
| Your concern is something you shared with Meta AI | Be cautious about future disclosures and check the feature’s current privacy information. | Changing a Facebook or Instagram post audience does not address an AI interaction. |
| Someone else posted content about you | Review that post’s visibility and consider the platform’s relevant reporting channels. | Your own post or account settings do not necessarily control another user’s content. |
The core rule is straightforward: use the formal objection route if Meta makes it available to your eligible account; otherwise, treat audience changes and careful sharing as ways to reduce exposure, not as a universal opt-out. Keep public posts, private conversations, AI-feature interactions, and previously trained models distinct when deciding what a control can realistically do.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I write in Meta’s objection form?
State plainly that you object to Meta using your public Facebook or Instagram information to develop, train, or improve its generative-AI systems. Follow the form’s prompts and avoid adding extra sensitive details that are not needed to explain the request.
Should I submit the objection separately for Facebook and Instagram?
Check both services while signed into the accounts you want covered. The available guidance notes that forms and interfaces can vary by account and product, so do not assume a request submitted from one account automatically applies to another.
Can a public post by someone else about me be covered by my objection?
The available sources do not establish a universal remedy for third-party posts that mention, depict, or quote you. Your own audience settings cannot change another person’s post; review its visibility and consider the platform’s relevant reporting channels.
Why can’t I find the Meta AI objection form?
The formal route is region-limited, and its availability may depend on your country, age, account, and product. Confirm you are signed into the relevant account and check its Privacy Center; a form shown in a different region or account may not be available to you.
