To stop a Duo automation immediately, open Shortcuts, tap Automation, select the automation, switch off Enable This Automation, and tap Done. This disables the automation without deleting it, so it will no longer notify you or run automatically.
If you still want the automation available, leave it enabled but require confirmation. Depending on your iOS version, the control is named Ask Before Running or Run After Confirmation. Also inspect the actions for Open App: when an App Is Opened trigger launches Duo again, it can create a self-triggering loop.
How do I stop a Duo automation from running right now?
The quickest fix is to disable the individual personal automation. Disabling it is reversible and does not remove the shortcut or its action list.

- Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.

Should I disable the automation or make it ask first?
Choose disabling when you want a complete stop. Choose confirmation when you need the automation occasionally but do not want an app switch, accidental tap, or unexpected trigger to execute it without approval.

Disabling is the definitive stop. Confirmation is the safer operating mode when you are not ready to remove the automation’s behavior.
Why does an iPhone automation run when I open or close an app?
Shortcuts’ App trigger has two separate directions: Is Opened and Is Closed. They are broader than a deliberate launch or quit action.

An Is Opened trigger can fire when you open the selected app or switch into it. For example, moving from Safari to Duo can count as opening Duo even if Duo was already present in the app switcher.
What “Is Closed” means
An Is Closed trigger can fire when you close the selected app or switch away from it. Leaving Duo for the Home Screen, another app, Control Center, or another system surface may therefore satisfy the close condition.

Why ordinary app switching causes surprises
These triggers describe a change in the app shown on screen, not necessarily a force-quit or a deliberate decision to terminate the app. A shortcut configured for Is Closed can therefore run during routine navigation. If that is not the behavior you want, disable the automation, require confirmation, or change the trigger direction.
How do I stop a Duo shortcut from reopening the app?
Inspect the action list for an Open App action that targets Duo or the same app named in the trigger. Pairing that action with an Is Opened trigger can make the automation call itself repeatedly.
- In Shortcuts > Automation, tap the affected automation.
- Scroll through the actions beneath the trigger.
- Look for Open App, especially an action that opens the same app selected in the trigger.
- If reopening the app is not intentional, delete that action from the automation.
- Tap Done, then test the automation with confirmation enabled before returning to fully automatic execution.
The loop occurs because the automation opens the app, the app opening satisfies Is Opened, and the trigger starts the automation again. Removing the self-reopening action breaks that cycle while leaving other actions intact.
How do I turn off “Ask Before Running” or require confirmation?
Confirmation is controlled inside the individual automation. iOS versions use different labels for the same safety choice.
- Open Shortcuts and tap Automation.
- Select the Duo automation.
- Find the run-behavior control. It may read Ask Before Running or Run After Confirmation.
- To make the automation run without a prompt, turn off Ask Before Running, or choose the setting that runs after confirmation only when you want a prompt.
- Tap Done and observe the next trigger.
Leaving confirmation enabled means iOS asks before executing the action list. Turning Ask Before Running off permits automatic execution, so use that only after the trigger and action list behave as intended.

What if “Automation” is not shown as a separate list?
Shortcuts’ organization varies by iOS release. On newer versions, an automation may be attached to a shortcut rather than presented in the older standalone personal-automation list.
- Open Shortcuts and check the Automation tab first.
- If the affected item is not there, open the shortcut associated with Duo and look for its automation or trigger settings.
- Search for the app name in your shortcuts and automations so you do not disable an unrelated rule.
- When you find the rule, use the same Enable This Automation, confirmation, trigger, and action controls described above.
The location can change, but the key distinction remains: disable the automation itself if you want to stop automatic execution without deleting the shortcut.
How can I tell whether the trigger or the action is the problem?
Separate the event that starts the automation from what the automation does after it starts. This prevents you from deleting useful actions when the real problem is an overly broad trigger.
Change the trigger when the timing is wrong
If the automation runs whenever you switch into or away from Duo, review whether it is set to Is Opened or Is Closed. Changing the direction changes when the automation is eligible to fire, but it does not alter the actions that follow.
Edit the actions when the result is wrong
If the trigger is appropriate but Duo launches again, remove or replace the Open App action that points back to the triggering app. Other actions can remain in place.

Disable first when you need a clean baseline
Turn off Enable This Automation before making multiple edits. If the unexpected behavior stops, re-enable the rule after one change at a time so you can identify which setting caused it.
What should I do if it fires while opening Control Center or Notification Center?
An unexpected close event around Control Center or Notification Center may be a version-specific operating-system issue rather than a mistake in your automation. An Apple Developer Forums report describes this symptom on iOS 26.6; that report does not establish that every iPhone or iOS release behaves this way.
- Note the exact iOS version installed under Settings > General > About.
- Disable the automation so it cannot keep firing while you investigate.
- Confirm that the trigger is really Is Closed and review whether any action reopens Duo.
- Install an available iOS update, then test again with confirmation enabled.
- If the behavior persists only around Control Center or Notification Center, treat it as a possible version-specific regression and keep the automation disabled or confirmation-protected until the behavior changes.
Do not assume that an overlay-triggered event proves the automation is configured incorrectly. First distinguish normal trigger semantics from a reported regression tied to a particular iOS version.

- Disable the automation and verify that switching into and away from Duo no longer produces a run or notification.

Does disabling an automation delete the shortcut?
No. Switching off Enable This Automation stops the automatic rule but preserves its configuration. The shortcut and its action list remain available, and you can re-enable the automation later without rebuilding it.
Delete the automation only when you are certain you will not need its trigger or actions again. For troubleshooting, disabling is the safer reversible choice.
