To stop a game launcher opening when you sign in, turn it off in Start > Settings > Apps > Startup. If the launcher is not listed, open Task Manager > Startup apps, select it, and choose Disable. These Windows controls stop automatic launching without uninstalling the game, while still allowing you to start the launcher manually when you want to play.

Steam and Epic Games Launcher also have their own startup checkboxes. Use those preferences when available, then verify the result by signing out or restarting Windows. If the program keeps returning, check Startup-folder shortcuts and, only as a carefully backed-up last resort, the relevant Windows Run keys. A clean boot is the diagnostic step for persistent conflicts.

What is the quickest way to stop a game launcher starting with Windows?

Windows 10 and Windows 11 provide two primary controls: the Startup page in Settings and the Startup apps page in Task Manager. The Settings switch is the simplest option for a launcher that appears in the list. Task Manager exposes the same startup-app list and adds a startup-impact rating, which helps you decide which programs to delay.

  1. Open Start, select Settings, then choose Apps and Startup.
  2. Find the launcher, such as Steam or Epic Games Launcher, in the list.
  3. Switch its toggle to Off.
  4. Sign out of Windows or restart the PC. The launcher should no longer open automatically at sign-in.

Microsoft describes the Task Manager action this way: “Select Disable to prevent the app from starting automatically when you sign in.” Disabling an entry changes its automatic-start behavior; it does not remove the launcher or its installed games.

What if the launcher is listed only in Task Manager?

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Select Startup apps in the left navigation (or the Startup tab in older Task Manager layouts), click the launcher, and choose Disable. Restart or sign out to check that the change took effect.

Task Manager can show a launcher that is easier to recognize there than in Settings. Its impact label is useful for prioritizing startup cleanup, but it describes startup resource use, not gaming performance once a game is running.

Which Windows method should you choose?

Method Best use Reversibility What it controls
Settings > Apps > Startup A launcher visible in the normal Windows list Turn the same toggle back on One startup app at a time
Task Manager > Startup apps An entry missing from Settings or one you want to rank by impact Select the entry and choose Enable The Windows startup-app list plus impact information
Startup folder A shortcut-based startup item that is absent from the app list Restore the shortcut to the folder Shortcuts launched for one user or all users
Registry Run keys A program configured at a lower level after other methods fail Restore a backed-up value Commands launched from Windows Run registry locations

Use the first two methods before touching folders or the registry. They are visible, easy to reverse, and less likely to affect unrelated software.

How do I stop Steam from opening when I turn on my PC?

Steam has a dedicated preference that controls whether its client starts with Windows.

  1. Open Steam.
  2. Choose Steam > Settings.
  3. Select Interface.
  4. Clear Run Steam when my computer starts.
  5. Close Steam and restart or sign out of Windows to verify the result.

If Steam still appears, use the Windows control as a second check: open Settings > Apps > Startup and switch Steam off, or disable it under Task Manager > Startup apps. Having both the in-app preference and Windows entry disabled is not harmful; it simply gives Windows an explicit instruction not to launch the client.

How do I stop Epic Games Launcher from starting with Windows?

Epic documents different labels for its standard and Preview clients. Identify which client you use before changing the setting.

Standard or legacy Epic Games Launcher

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher and select your player icon.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Clear Run When My Computer Starts.

You can alternatively press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, open Startup apps, right-click EpicGamesLauncher, and select Disable.

Epic Games Launcher Preview

  1. Open the client and select the Epic Games logo.
  2. Choose Settings, then General.
  3. Clear Run launcher on startup.

After changing either version, sign out or restart Windows. If the client updates and its wording changes, the Windows Startup apps entry remains the stable fallback.

How can I stop Xbox, EA, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Riot Client, or another launcher?

First inspect the launcher’s own settings for a control named Start with Windows, Open on startup, Launch at login, or Run when my computer starts. Menu names and behavior can vary by client version, so do not assume that a checkbox in one launcher exists in another.

  1. Open the launcher and look under sections such as General, Interface, Preferences, or Startup.
  2. Clear the startup or login option if you find one.
  3. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch the launcher off there as well if it is listed.
  4. If it is absent from Settings, use Ctrl + Shift + Esc > Startup apps, select the launcher, and choose Disable.

Do not disable a random executable simply because its name looks related to a game. Confirm the publisher and installed location first. A launcher may install separate update, cloud-sync, controller, notification, or anti-cheat components, each with a different startup entry.

Why is the launcher missing from Windows Startup apps?

Some programs start through a shortcut in a Startup folder rather than the startup-app list. Microsoft documents separate folders for the current user and for every user on the PC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the current-user Startup folder

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter shell:startup and press Enter.
  3. Look for a shortcut to the unwanted launcher.
  4. Delete or move that shortcut, then restart Windows.

This changes startup behavior for the account you are currently using. Moving the shortcut to another folder is safer than deleting it permanently if you may need to restore it.

Check the all-users Startup folder

  1. Press Win + R.
  2. Enter shell:common startup and press Enter.
  3. Identify the launcher shortcut and move it out of the folder.
  4. Restart Windows and test again.

The common folder can affect every Windows account on the computer, so make sure other users do not rely on the shortcut before removing it.

When should you inspect registry Run keys?

If the launcher has no visible Startup-app entry and no Startup-folder shortcut, its command may be stored in a Run key. Microsoft lists these locations:

  • HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for the current user.
  • HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for the local computer.
  • HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for 32-bit software on applicable 64-bit Windows installations.

Registry edits can disable unrelated software or prevent Windows components from starting if the wrong value is changed. Back up the relevant key before editing, record the original value, and remove only an entry you can positively identify as the launcher. If you are not comfortable interpreting registry values, return to the launcher’s support documentation or use a clean boot to diagnose the source instead.

Does disabling startup improve game performance?

It can reduce the number of programs competing for CPU time, disk activity, memory, and network bandwidth while Windows is signing in, but it is not a guaranteed frame-rate fix. Task Manager’s impact label measures the work performed during startup, not the performance of a game after you launch it.

How Microsoft defines startup impact

Label Startup CPU time Startup disk I/O
High impact More than 1 second More than 3 MB
Medium impact 300 milliseconds to 1,000 milliseconds 300 KB to 3 MB
Low impact Below 300 milliseconds Below 300 KB

These thresholds come from Microsoft Learn’s startup-impact definitions (2020). They are measurements of startup CPU and disk activity. A high-impact launcher may make sign-in feel slower, but the label alone does not predict frame rate, input latency, loading times inside a game, or online ping.

How should you use the impact label?

  • Disable a recognized launcher with high impact if you do not need it immediately after sign-in.
  • Review medium-impact entries when you are trying to shorten boot time.
  • Do not remove low-impact items solely because they appear in the list; the possible benefit may be too small to matter.
  • Leave security software, hardware utilities, and Windows components alone unless you understand their purpose.

What stops working when a launcher no longer starts automatically?

Disabling startup delays the launcher; it does not uninstall the client or its games. You can still open the launcher from the Start menu, desktop shortcut, or an associated game shortcut.

Functions that depend on the launcher already running may wait until you start it manually. Depending on the client version and configuration, those can include game updates, cloud-save synchronization, friend or chat notifications, controller integration, background downloads, and anti-cheat initialization. Start the launcher before playing if you need one of those services, and check its status after an update or a game fails to connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do you preserve automatic updates?

Decide whether the convenience of background updates is worth the startup cost. If you disable automatic launch, open the client periodically before a gaming session and allow pending updates to finish. Some games update through a separate service, while others require the launcher itself; the behavior is version-dependent.

How do you re-enable a launcher?

Return to Settings > Apps > Startup and switch the entry on, or open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the launcher, and choose Enable. For Steam or Epic, you can also restore the corresponding in-app checkbox. If you moved a Startup-folder shortcut, put it back in its original folder.

What if the launcher keeps opening after I disable it?

Check for a second startup mechanism before assuming the Windows setting failed. A launcher can have both a client entry and a helper service, or an update can restore a preference.

  1. Confirm that you disabled the correct entry in both Settings and Task Manager.
  2. Inspect shell:startup and shell:common startup for shortcuts.
  3. Look for a separate updater, tray helper, or service bearing the same publisher name.
  4. Open the launcher’s own settings again after it updates.
  5. Restart Windows and observe whether the launcher appears immediately at sign-in or only after another game-related program starts.

If a game opens the launcher on demand, that is different from startup behavior: launching the game may intentionally start its required client. Do not disable a service solely because it shares the launcher’s name, especially when an online game requires anti-cheat or authentication components.

How do I use a clean boot to find a startup conflict?

Use a clean boot when the launcher returns despite normal startup controls, or when you suspect another startup item is triggering it. Microsoft’s procedure temporarily loads Windows with non-Microsoft services and selected startup apps disabled so you can isolate the cause.

  2. Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  3. Open the Services tab and select Hide all Microsoft services. Do not disable Microsoft services before using this filter.
  4. Disable the remaining third-party services you are investigating, or disable a small group to narrow the search.
  5. Open Task Manager from the Startup area of System Configuration and disable the relevant startup apps.
  6. Apply the changes and restart Windows.
  7. Check whether the launcher still opens. Re-enable items in groups and restart between tests until you identify the service or app that causes the behavior.

A clean-boot environment can temporarily remove features such as third-party security tools, synchronization, audio utilities, or vendor hardware controls. Use it for diagnosis rather than everyday operation.

How do you exit a clean boot safely?

  1. Open msconfig again.
  2. On the General tab, select Normal startup.
  3. On the Services tab, re-enable the services you disabled.
  4. Restore the startup apps you still need in Task Manager.
  5. Apply the changes and restart Windows.

Leaving selected services disabled can create confusing problems later, so restore the normal configuration after you have identified the conflicting item.

Which startup method is safest for your situation?

Match the method to what you can see and how broadly you want the change to apply.

Situation Recommended action Reason
You simply do not want a listed launcher at sign-in Turn it off in Settings Fast, visible, and easy to reverse
The Settings list does not show it Disable it in Task Manager Uses the same Windows startup list with impact information
A shortcut launches it for one account Move the shortcut from shell:startup Changes only that user’s shortcut-based startup
A shortcut affects every account Move it from shell:common startup Stops the common-folder launch for all users
The source remains hidden Back up and inspect the documented Run keys Addresses lower-level startup commands, with greater risk
The behavior may be caused by another service Run a clean boot and restore Normal startup afterward Isolates conflicts without permanently deleting software

For most people, the Settings or Task Manager toggle is the right endpoint. Escalate only when the launcher is genuinely absent from those lists or a repeatable conflict remains.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will disabling a launcher at startup delete my installed games or save files?

No. The startup setting controls when the launcher process opens; it does not remove game folders or uninstall the client. Cloud saves and local saves remain governed by the launcher and each game, so open the client normally when you need synchronization.

Why does a launcher still appear when I launch a game?

Many PC games require their publisher client for authentication, updates, or anti-cheat checks. Starting the game can therefore open the client on demand, which is separate from the client launching during Windows sign-in.

Can I stop only notifications while keeping the launcher available?

Usually, yes: open the launcher’s notification or tray settings and disable alerts without changing its Windows startup entry. The exact controls vary by client, so treat notification preferences and startup behavior as separate settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I disable a game’s anti-cheat service to speed up boot?

Do not disable an anti-cheat service unless the game’s support instructions explicitly allow it. Some titles will refuse to start, disconnect, or require a repair when that service is unavailable; disabling the launcher’s automatic window is the safer first change.
