To stop future Discord messages from appearing on Discord’s public web pages, open User Settings > Data & Privacy and turn off Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages. The account-level switch applies on every device, including mobile, but it is preventive: messages sent while it was enabled can remain on a Discoverable Server’s web page. Delete those older messages individually if you need them removed from Discord’s own pages. Search engines can retain their own copies for an additional, unpredictable period.
This setting also does not disable Discord’s ordinary in-app search. Discord’s documentation describes no global switch that prevents members from searching messages in servers or direct messages (DMs). The controls below separate public-web discoverability, server administration, message deletion and internal Discord search so you can choose the measure that actually addresses your privacy concern.
How do I stop my Discord messages from showing up on the web?
Use the account-level web-content setting in Discord’s desktop app or browser. It controls whether messages you send in eligible Discoverable Server channels can be displayed on Discord’s Server Web Pages and subsequently found through web search.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Discord in the desktop application or at discord.com in a browser.
- Click the User Settings gear.
- Select Data & Privacy.
- Find Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.
- Turn the setting off, then leave the page after Discord saves the change.
Discord says, “Messages you send while the setting is off won’t appear on the web.” The switch belongs to your account, so you do not repeat this procedure separately for each server or on your phone. It is not a per-channel preference: once off, it applies to your use of all Discoverable Servers associated with that account.

In most regions this option is enabled by default. Discord lists the EU/EEA, United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea as regions where it is disabled by default. Teen accounts cannot turn it on. Defaults and labels can change as Discord completes the rollout, so check the exact label shown in your account as of October 2026.
What does turning off the web setting actually remove?
Turning the switch off blocks eligible messages you send after the change; it does not perform a historical purge. Discord explicitly describes the action as “not a bulk ‘remove my history’ action.” A message posted while the option was enabled can still be selected for a Server Web Page even if it has not appeared there yet.
The setting affects Discord’s public web surface, not access inside the community where you posted. Members who can already open the channel can still read the message, quote it, copy it or find it with Discord’s normal search. Turning off web display therefore reduces a public-discoverability path; it does not make an otherwise accessible channel private.
How do I remove older messages that are already visible?
Delete each message you want removed while you still have permission to access the relevant server or DM. Discord states that deleting an individual message removes it from Discord and from the server’s Discord-hosted web page.
- Open the server, channel or DM containing the message.
- Locate the message. Discord search filters such as author, channel and date can help you find older posts.
- Open the message’s More menu (the three-dot menu).
- Choose Delete Message and confirm.
- Repeat for every message that should no longer be displayed.
Deleting the source message does not guarantee immediate disappearance from Google or another search engine. Those services may have already crawled, cached or indexed a copy and control their own refresh schedules. Discord can remove the message from its surfaces, but it cannot set the retention period for an external index. Avoid promising an instant result; check again after the relevant search engine has recrawled the page.

Deletion is also different from Discord’s retention rules. Discord says it generally keeps personal information while an account is active, and specified public posts may be retained for 180 days to two years for purposes such as detecting policy-violating content. That retention statement concerns Discord’s operational and safety systems; it does not mean the deleted text should remain visible on the Server Web Page.
Can a server administrator limit which Discord content is public?
Yes. Administrators of a Discoverable Server can control participation at the server level in Server Settings > Web Presence. They can choose which public channels contribute to the server’s web presence or opt all channels out. This is separate from each member’s account preference.
Channel Messages and Channel Summaries are separate choices
Discord’s Web Presence controls let administrators adjust Channel Messages and Channel Summaries separately. A channel might therefore be excluded from message display while still being represented by a summary, or have both forms excluded, depending on the administrator’s selections. Review both controls when the goal is to keep a sensitive channel out of public pages.
What happens if an administrator does nothing?
For the announced rollout, Discord says public channels remain on by default unless administrators change the Web Presence settings. Treat that as a rollout rule rather than a permanent promise: Discord is introducing the feature gradually, and the available options may be revised.
Which control should be used?
| Control | Who controls it | Where it applies | When it works | Surface affected | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages | Individual account holder | All Discoverable Servers used by that account | Future messages after it is turned off | Discord Server Web Pages and related web discovery | Does not remove older posts or disable in-app search |
| Server Settings > Web Presence | Server administrator | Selected public channels in one Discoverable Server | When the administrator changes channel participation | That server’s public web presence | Cannot override a member’s account setting for messages that member chooses not to publish |
| Delete an individual message | Author or moderator with deletion permission | The selected message | After deletion from Discord | Discord message and its Discord-hosted web page | Search-engine copies can persist |
| Discord internal search | Discord service and access permissions | Current server or DM | While the content remains accessible | In-app search results | No documented global off switch |
The strongest practical arrangement is layered: administrators exclude confidential channels in Web Presence, while every member turns off the account-level setting. Deletion handles specific historic posts; neither setting changes who can search a channel they are already allowed to enter.

Can I disable Discord’s built-in message search?
Not globally, according to the cited Discord documentation. Discord’s ordinary search is an in-app feature that indexes within the current server or DM and offers filters for author, channel, dates, mentions, links, embeds, polls, files and other content types.

The account-level web setting does not switch off this index. It only governs whether qualifying messages can be shown on public web pages for Discoverable channels.
What members can and cannot do
- A member can use search only in servers, channels and DMs that the account can access.
- A member cannot use the web-content toggle to hide a message from other authorized members inside Discord.
- Leaving a server removes your normal access to its channels, but it is not a deletion request for messages you previously sent.
- Deleting a message removes that specific content from Discord’s surfaces when deletion is available; it does not erase other people’s quotations, screenshots or copies.
If your concern is an employee, volunteer or moderator searching a private conversation, the available remedy is access control—remove the person’s channel permission, move the conversation to a less accessible space, or delete the relevant message—not the Discoverable-content setting.
Which servers and conversations are included in Discord’s web-discoverability change?
The announced change is limited to Discoverable Servers. Discord describes these as servers with at least 1,000 members and at least eight weeks of age, subject to additional activity and safety requirements. Discord reported more than 63,000 Discoverable Servers in 2026.
Private servers, DMs and group DMs are excluded from these announced changes. Discord’s wording is unambiguous: “Private servers, DMs, and GDMs are always private and not included in these changes.” That does not mean a private conversation can never be copied or disclosed by a participant; it means Discord is not adding those spaces to this public Server Web Page program.

Rollout dates to keep in mind
- Discord says every Discoverable Server will have a Server Web Page beginning November 16, 2026.
- Discord says some public-channel messages may begin appearing on Server Web Pages and in web search in mid-December 2026, with a gradual rollout.
- These are announced rollout milestones, not a guarantee that every region, server or message will appear on the same day.
Because the labels, defaults and rollout schedule are time-sensitive, use the settings currently displayed in your account and server rather than assuming an older screenshot reflects the October 2026 interface.
Does “Use Data to Improve Discord” stop message indexing?
No. Use Data to Improve Discord is a separate option under Data & Privacy. Turning it off stops Discord from using new information about how you use or navigate Discord for the described product-improvement purposes. Information collected while it was enabled may continue to be used.
This option does not disable ordinary message search, remove message content, or control whether messages from Discoverable channels appear on public web pages. Set it according to your product-data preference, but use the web-content setting, channel controls and deletion for discoverability concerns.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does deleting my Discord account remove a public message fastest?
No. Discord directs users to delete specific content first when the goal is to remove a particular message. Account deletion is a broader process and is not an instant takedown tool.
Discord says an account is typically placed on hold for 15 to 30 days before deletion and anonymization begin. Identifying information may take up to 45 days to delete from backups. Those periods describe account processing, not the time a search engine needs to update an indexed page, and they should not be used as a promise that a specific public message will disappear on a particular date.

If you need a narrow result, preserve the message location, delete the individual post while you have access, then monitor the Discord page and any external result separately. Account deletion can affect every server, DM and setting associated with you, so consider its consequences before using it for a single post.
What is the most privacy-preserving Discord setup?
Use the controls that match the audience you are trying to exclude. The following checklist avoids treating one toggle as a universal privacy switch.
- For public-web privacy: turn off Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages in User Settings > Data & Privacy.
- For a sensitive server: ask an administrator to open Server Settings > Web Presence and exclude the relevant channels from both Channel Messages and Channel Summaries where appropriate.
- For historic posts: delete individual messages, confirming that you still have access and permission to remove them.
- For internal access: review channel permissions and membership; the public-web toggle does not alter who can search inside Discord.
- For product-improvement data: review Use Data to Improve Discord separately, without assuming it affects message indexing.
- For external results: allow for search-engine recrawling and cache expiry after Discord removes the source page; Discord does not control that timetable.
How should I explain the setting to other server members?
Tell members that the switch is account-wide and future-facing. A member who turns it off prevents new eligible messages from being placed on public web pages, but the change does not retroactively remove posts sent while the switch was on.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a moderator make a Discoverable Server completely invisible to web search?
An administrator can opt public channels out through Server Settings > Web Presence, but Discord’s rollout documentation describes channel-level controls rather than a promise that every trace of a server will vanish from every search engine. Existing external indexes can also outlive a change to the server setting.
If I leave a server, can I still delete messages I wrote there?
Usually you need access to the relevant space and message to edit or delete it. Leaving can remove that access, so handle any message cleanup before departing or ask a moderator who has the necessary permissions.
Can teen accounts enable public web display later?
Discord says teen accounts cannot turn on the message-content web setting. The restriction is separate from the server’s Web Presence choices and from ordinary in-app search permissions.
Are Channel Summaries the same as publishing message text?
No. Discord exposes Channel Summaries and Channel Messages as separate Web Presence controls. An administrator should review both when a channel must not contribute either descriptive summaries or searchable message content.
