The fastest way to stop an AI shopping agent from placing unwanted orders is to revoke its payment authority. In Shop, open Account > Connections, select the connected personal agent, and switch off Allow agent to pay for me; you can also disconnect the agent and remove saved payment methods. If payment access must remain, set the smallest available weekly, monthly, or total budget and require a human approval or Buy action before checkout. Review the cart, delivery address, taxes, fees, discounts, and final total immediately before approving.
What should I do first to stop an AI agent from buying something?
Disable payment permission or disconnect the agent before changing any other setting. A spending cap limits the possible loss, but it does not make an agent understand an ambiguous instruction correctly.
- Revoke payment authority. Turn off the setting that lets the agent pay, or remove the agent connection entirely.
- Remove stored payment methods you do not need. Delete unused cards and payment tokens from the shopping account.
- Set a narrow budget. If the platform supports weekly, monthly, or total limits, choose the smallest amount that can complete the task.
- Require a human checkpoint. Configure the agent to prepare a cart but stop before the final Buy, Place order, or Pay button.
- Inspect the final checkout state. Confirm every line item, quantity, variant, shipping address, delivery speed, tax, fee, discount, and total.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the order ID, authorization message, cart snapshot, and screenshots if an order was placed unexpectedly.
Shop’s help center warns that you are responsible for purchases made within the permissions and budget you set, even when the agent misunderstands your instructions or buys something you did not expect. A budget is therefore a damage limit, not an accuracy guarantee.

In Shop, the relevant consumer control is the payment permission for the connected personal agent. Turning it off prevents that agent from paying on your behalf while leaving you able to shop manually.

- Open Shop and sign in to the account that contains the agent connection.
- Go to Account > Connections.
- Select the personal agent you authorized.
- Switch Allow agent to pay for me off. If you no longer want the connection, disconnect the agent as well.
- Review the account’s saved cards and remove any that are no longer required.
- If you still need automated purchasing, set a weekly, monthly, or total budget and use a required approval step instead of unattended checkout.
Shop says permission can be revoked at any time. Revoking it is the quickest way to stop future payments, but it does not automatically cancel an order that has already completed. Check your order history and contact the merchant promptly for any completed purchase.
Can I let an agent shop without letting it place an order?
Yes. The safer pattern is “cart creation without payment”: the agent can search, compare, and assemble items, but a person must authorize the final transaction.
Use a draft-cart workflow
- Allow product search and cart editing.
- Block access to the payment instrument or require a one-time authorization token.
- Stop automation when the cart, shipping choice, taxes, fees, and total are known.
- Show the complete cart to a human in a trusted interface.
- Require an explicit Buy or approval action that cannot be inferred from a casual message such as “that looks good.”
Choose when approval is mandatory
For groceries or other repeatable, low-risk purchases, you might allow approval only below a carefully chosen threshold. For unfamiliar sellers, subscriptions, regulated goods, high-value products, or any change to the delivery address, require approval every time. AWS recommends strict approval thresholds and human-gated approvals because natural-language intent can be ambiguous.

The approval screen should be generated from the merchant’s current cart, not from the agent’s earlier text summary. Compare the displayed quantities and variants with the original request, then verify the total again after shipping and discounts are applied. Do not approve a transaction based solely on a conversational sentence.
What should a safe AI checkout process look like?
A safe process keeps the cart state, authorization, and final payment as separate, auditable events. OpenAI’s checkout specification describes a session that is updated as items, shipping details, and discounts change, and completed only when the customer clicks Buy.
- Create an authenticated session. The agent and merchant establish an authenticated HTTPS connection.
- Update the authoritative cart. Every item, quantity, shipping option, tax, fee, and discount change is written to the merchant’s current cart state.
- Return a complete review. The customer sees the current totals and destination before authorizing payment.
- Capture an explicit authorization. The customer clicks Buy or an equivalent confirmation; the agent cannot treat a general instruction as payment approval.
- Complete once. Idempotency keys prevent retries from creating duplicate orders.
- Support cancellation while possible. Merchants can expose a cancel-checkout endpoint so an in-progress session can be stopped before completion.
These controls matter because an agent may retry a request, misread a changed price, or act on stale cart data. Authentication, signatures, idempotency, and a final customer action make those failures easier to detect and contain.
How can a merchant stop agents from checking out directly?
Shopify merchants can remove the paths an agent uses to discover products or complete payment. These are merchant-side controls; they do not revoke a consumer’s permission in a separate shopping account.

- In the Shopify admin, open Sales channels > Agentic.
- Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
- Disable Shopify Catalog access if you do not want agentic storefronts to use the catalog.
- Turn off automatic enrollment in new agentic storefronts if you want each connection reviewed manually.
- Disable Direct checkout when you want customers to finish on your online store instead.
Shopify says turning off direct checkout redirects customers to the merchant’s online store. Turning off catalog access deactivates direct checkout, although search crawling may still expose product information. Removing catalog access therefore reduces agent functionality without making a product invisible on the public web.
When should a merchant use bot protection?
Shopify Plus merchants can schedule bot protection that blocks known auto-checkout bots and presents reCAPTCHA or hCaptcha checkpoints. The feature includes a setting to stop bots from auto-completing checkout. Use it when automated traffic is creating fraud, inventory abuse, or checkout load, but keep a normal customer path available.
Bot protection is a merchant defense, not a consumer kill switch. A shopper must still revoke the agent’s payment permission or disconnect the agent in the account where that authority was granted.
Which controls prevent payment, and which only limit damage?
Use a control that matches the failure you are trying to prevent. Revocation blocks payment authority; budgets and thresholds reduce exposure but still allow some automated purchases.

What risks make an AI agent place an unintended order?
Unwanted purchases usually come from a mismatch between the user’s intent and the agent’s interpretation, rather than from a single broken button. AWS identifies ambiguous natural-language intent, agent impersonation, and prompt injection in product data as important risks.
Ambiguous instructions
“Find something like this,” “get the usual,” or “pick the best deal” leaves choices about brand, quantity, size, seller, shipping speed, and acceptable price. Define those constraints in structured fields where possible, and require approval whenever the agent must guess.
Prompt injection in product information
Product descriptions, reviews, seller messages, and other merchant-controlled text are untrusted data. They may contain instructions aimed at the agent rather than information about the product. An agent should treat that text as content to display, not as permission to change the cart, reveal credentials, or bypass approval.

Impersonation and stolen sessions
An attacker who can impersonate the user or obtain an agent token may attempt to shop with the saved payment method. Use authenticated connections, signed requests, tokenized payment mechanisms, and short-lived permissions where the platform supports them. Review connected agents and revoke anything unfamiliar.

Prices, inventory, shipping costs, and discounts can change between search and payment. The final approval must use the merchant’s current authoritative cart, not a cached quote. Reject the transaction if the total or any material detail changes after approval.
How do I investigate an order that an agent already placed?
First stop additional payments, then document the completed transaction and contact the merchant quickly. A prompt, well-documented request gives the merchant the information needed to locate the order and apply its cancellation or return policy.
- Turn off payment permission or disconnect the agent.
- Capture the order ID, timestamp, confirmation email, authorization message, and a screenshot of the cart or agent conversation.
- Check whether the order is pending, processing, shipped, or delivered.
- Contact the merchant through its official support channel and ask whether cancellation is still possible.
- Explain which item, quantity, address, or authorization was incorrect; provide the order ID and evidence.
- If the merchant cannot cancel, follow its documented return or refund process and monitor the payment account.
Shop cautions that disputes may be unsuccessful when a purchase falls within the permissions and budget you authorized. Do not assume that an agent’s mistake automatically reverses the transaction.
Is there one kill switch that disables every shopping agent?
No universal cross-platform kill switch is documented in the available official guidance. Payment authority belongs to the service where the agent is connected, while catalog and checkout controls belong to each merchant.
That separation means you may need to revoke a consumer connection, remove payment methods, change an agent’s own approval policy, and disable merchant-side agentic access independently. Keep a short inventory of connected agents, saved payment methods, active budgets, and merchants that permit direct agent checkout so you know where to act during an incident.
How should a household or team set a standing policy for shopping agents?
Write the policy before enabling automation, and make the default “prepare, then ask.” A short written rule prevents a conversational shortcut from becoming accidental authorization.

- Seller name and store domain.
- Exact product, model, size, color, compatibility, and quantity.
- One-time purchase versus subscription or recurring renewal.
- Shipping name, address, delivery speed, and pickup option.
