Use layered controls: limit what the agent can access with a sandbox, require approval for actions with meaningful side effects, and keep any auto-approved command rules narrow. Approval makes an action a decision point; sandboxing limits what a command can reach if it runs. Neither a prompt nor a command allowlist is a complete security boundary.

The exact controls depend on the agent, operating system, runtime and organizational policy. Start with the least access the task needs, then test the actual configuration you plan to rely on. For example, VS Code warns that terminal auto-approval parsing is best effort and may not recognize some shell syntax or obfuscated commands. Microsoft’s approval guidance explains that limitation.

What controls actually stop risky commands?

Use separate controls for permission, enforcement and convenience. A command prompt asks you to decide whether an action may proceed; a sandbox limits the resources available to the process; command rules can reduce unnecessary prompts but should not be treated as the sole defense.

Control What it does What to check
Approval policy Determines when the agent must ask before an action. Which actions require approval, and whether a saved grant changes that requirement.
Sandbox Restricts technical access, such as writable paths or network access, when a command runs. Which paths and network destinations the actual runtime permits.
Command-specific rules Allow or deny selected commands or patterns, where supported. Whether compound commands and shell syntax are evaluated as expected.

Codex documentation explicitly separates the sandbox’s technical boundaries from the approval policy that determines when the agent must ask. VS Code likewise treats approval, command rules and sandboxing as distinct controls. OpenAI’s Codex safety guidance and Microsoft’s VS Code security guidance describe those distinctions.

That separation matters when deciding what to do with an unexpected command. A prompt can give you a chance to inspect an operation, but it does not itself constrain what the command can reach after approval. A sandbox can restrict access even when a command runs, but it does not tell you whether the action is appropriate for the task. Command rules may save time on routine operations, but their parsing and scope depend on the product. For sensitive work, combine the controls rather than relying on the most convenient one.

Which actions should require approval?

Require a deliberate review for actions that could delete or change important data, affect files outside the intended project, or create effects beyond the local workspace. The right boundary depends on what the task needs; avoid granting broad access just to make routine work smoother.

  • Destructive changes: commands that remove files or otherwise make difficult-to-reverse changes.
  • Writes beyond the project: changes to paths not explicitly needed for the task.
  • Network access: access to external destinations or services when the task does not require it.
  • Other consequential side effects: operations that affect shared resources or make changes beyond the working task.

GitHub says Copilot CLI allows read-only operations automatically while potentially destructive operations require explicit approval unless permission has already been granted. That is a product-specific example, not a guarantee about every agent or setup. GitHub’s tool-permission documentation describes its behavior.

Approval should be proportional to impact, not just to how familiar a command looks. Before accepting, check what resource it will affect, whether the target is inside the intended project, whether it can reach a network destination, and whether the effect is reversible. If the operation is broader than the task requires, cancel or narrow it rather than granting permission simply to clear the prompt. For team use, agree which kinds of changes require review so that individual developers do not silently turn a one-off exception into a standing permission.

How should I choose a sandbox and approval setup?

Choose the narrowest access that still lets the agent do the assigned work, and keep approval for actions whose consequences matter. The sandbox and approval policy solve different problems, so configure both rather than using one as a substitute for the other.

  1. Define the task boundary. Identify the project paths the agent needs to read or change, and whether the task needs network access. Do not assume that access required for one task is necessary for the next.
  2. Limit technical access first. Use a read-only or workspace-limited mode when it is sufficient. If the agent must make changes, grant only the required write scope and restrict network access where the harness supports it.
  3. Keep consequential actions reviewable. Require approval for destructive actions, out-of-scope writes and other meaningful side effects. Do not convert a broad approval into a default merely to avoid prompts.
  4. Add narrow command rules if available. Auto-approve only commands or patterns you understand. Maintain deny or approval coverage for dangerous actions, and do not rely on shell-command parsing as the technical boundary.
  5. Inspect remembered permissions. Check whether a “remember” or equivalent choice applies only to one action, lasts for a session, or is saved more broadly. Remove grants that the current task no longer needs.
  6. Test the configured runtime. Try harmless examples that represent allowed and restricted behavior before relying on the controls for sensitive work.

Codex documentation gives read-only and workspace-write/on-request as examples of modes, while cautioning that defaults and available boundaries differ between local and cloud use. Names and behavior may also vary with configuration. Consult the Codex guidance for the environment you use rather than assuming its local and cloud settings match.

A useful way to scope access is to ask three questions before each task: What must the agent read? What must it change? What must it contact? Read-only access may be enough for review or explanation. A coding task may need writes within the project, but not writes elsewhere. Some work may need network access, while other tasks can proceed without it. Treat filesystem and network access as separate decisions: allowing one should not automatically imply allowing the other.

There is no universal setting name or configuration that applies across products. The safe choice is the narrowest available mode that supports the work, followed by a check of the effective boundaries in that particular harness. For a managed team environment, the administrator’s policy may also affect which controls users can change. Verify the active configuration instead of assuming that an individual preference overrides organizational settings.

How do I keep command auto-approval from becoming a weak link?

Make automatic approval specific, and treat the rule as a convenience rather than a security guarantee. A rule that appears to match a harmless command may not account for every way a shell can express or combine actions.

Allow only commands you understand

Before adding a command or pattern to an allow rule, consider what it can do in the current working directory and whether it can produce side effects. If the task needs a broader operation, prefer a prompt that lets you inspect the exact action rather than widening a rule for convenience.

Think about the scope of the rule as well as the command. A permission that is safe in one repository may be too broad in a different directory or project. Keep rules tied to the work that needs them, and revisit them when the project or task changes. If the product offers deny or approval rules alongside allowed commands, use those to preserve review for actions with meaningful side effects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for compound commands and shell syntax

VS Code documents that compound commands are evaluated across subcommands, but also warns that its terminal auto-approval parsing is best effort and may miss shell syntax or obfuscated commands. As a result, a rule that appears to permit one benign operation should not be assumed to make a combined command safe. See Microsoft’s notes on approval rules and parsing.

This is a practical reason to avoid broad patterns that match more than the routine operation you intend to permit. An approval system’s interpretation of shell text may differ from how the shell ultimately executes it. Do not use a successful match as evidence that every part of a command has been safely understood.

Keep technical restrictions in place

Command rules cannot replace filesystem and network restrictions. VS Code describes sandboxing as an additional control layer, not a virtual machine or a standalone security boundary; its suitability depends on the harness and platform. Use the relevant VS Code security documentation to understand the boundary available in your configuration.

How do the controls differ across coding agents?

The same safety plan does not translate into identical behavior across products. Compare the actual enforcement mechanism, path and network boundaries, permission persistence, runtime compatibility and any organization-managed policy.

Agent or environment Documented controls and behavior Important qualification
Codex CLI or IDE Sandboxing constrains technical access to writes, paths and network; approval policy separately determines when the agent asks. Published examples include read-only and workspace-write/on-request. Defaults and available boundaries differ between local and cloud use; do not assume they are identical. OpenAI guidance.
VS Code agent sessions Approval levels, terminal command rules and sandboxing are separate controls. Command parsing is best effort; sandbox behavior and availability depend on harness and platform. It is not a virtual machine or standalone security boundary. Approvals and security.
GitHub Copilot CLI Read-only operations are allowed automatically; potentially destructive operations require approval unless permission is already granted. Saved permissions can apply at repository or directory scope, and permanently approved URL domains can apply across sessions. GitHub Docs.
Claude Code Anthropic says its default permission model asks before most modifications or commands, with exceptions for safe commands. Its sandbox uses OS-level filesystem and network isolation. Anthropic reports an internal finding that sandboxing reduced permission prompts by 84%. This is a vendor-reported prompt-frequency result, not an independent measure of security effectiveness. Anthropic’s explanation, published October 20, 2025.

These are documented product examples, not a ranking. Your installed version, shell, operating system, harness and organization policy can change which settings are available and how they behave.

When comparing tools, focus on the control surface rather than the label. Ask whether restrictions are technically enforced or mainly depend on a prompt or best-effort parsing; which project paths can be written; whether network destinations can be restricted; how long saved approvals persist; and whether the controls work in the operating system and harness you actually use. These questions make the tradeoffs clearer than a generic claim that an agent is “safe” or “sandboxed.”

Anthropic’s October 20, 2025 article reports that, in its internal usage, sandboxing safely reduced permission prompts by 84%. That figure describes prompt frequency in the company’s usage, not a measured reduction in unsafe commands or proof that a particular configuration is secure. Fewer prompts may make supervised work less interruptive, but the relevant question for your setup remains whether the filesystem and network boundaries are appropriately limited and tested.

How do I test that the restrictions really work?

Test both the path that should work and representative actions that should be blocked or require approval. Documentation describes controls, but it does not guarantee identical enforcement in every runtime or managed configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose harmless test cases. Select a read-only action, a representative write, a network operation and an attempt to access a path outside the intended project. Do not use destructive production data to test a restriction.
  2. Run the permitted case. Confirm that the read-only action succeeds under the access mode you intend to use.
  3. Check restricted cases. Confirm that representative writes, network access or out-of-scope paths are either blocked by the technical boundary or stop for approval, as intended.
  4. Check what “remember” does. If you save a permission during testing, verify its scope and persistence before using it for real work. GitHub documents repository- or directory-scoped saved permissions and URL-domain approvals that can apply across sessions; Codex also offers action approvals that may apply for a session.
  5. Recheck after changes. Repeat the checks if you change the agent, harness, operating system, managed policy or sandbox configuration.

If a restricted operation proceeds without the expected boundary, do not treat the approval UI or command rule as sufficient protection. Review the product’s documented controls for that runtime and narrow access before using it on sensitive work.

Keep the test deliberately small and repeatable. You are checking whether the boundary behaves as expected, not trying to prove every possible command safe. Use harmless files and destinations, and avoid testing against shared or production resources. A test that covers only a normal command is incomplete if the concern is an out-of-project path or an unnecessary network connection. Record which environment and policy you tested so that a later switch of harness or operating system does not inherit unverified assumptions.

What should I do about prompt injection and remembered approvals?

Treat repository content and external data as potentially influential instructions, not as permission to expand access. VS Code notes that prompt injection can affect agent behavior and recommends sandboxing for higher-risk situations; it also notes that non-process tools have separate permission checks. An approval prompt still needs careful human review.

A remembered permission may be broader or longer-lived than a single command. GitHub documents permissions saved at repository or directory scope and URL-domain approvals that can persist across sessions; Codex action approvals may apply for a session. Review saved grants when the task or project changes, and remove ones that are no longer needed. GitHub’s documentation and OpenAI’s Codex guidance explain those product-specific scopes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that visible terminal prompts cover every capability available to an agent. In VS Code, non-process tools have separate permission checks, so actions through other tools need their own review. Likewise, a previously approved domain or directory may remain trusted after the original task ends. Make permission review part of task cleanup: remove grants that are no longer necessary, especially when moving between projects or working with less trusted repository content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a sandbox mean an AI coding agent is running inside a virtual machine?

Not necessarily. VS Code explicitly says its agent sandbox is not a virtual machine, and its availability and behavior depend on the harness and platform. Check the documentation for the runtime you actually use rather than inferring isolation from the word “sandbox.”

Why is my agent still asking about a command after I enabled sandboxing?

Sandboxing limits access; it does not by itself determine whether the agent must request permission. Approval policy is a separate control, so a sandboxed action can still trigger a prompt.

Can an agent’s permissions change between local and cloud use?

Yes. OpenAI says Codex defaults and available boundaries depend on whether it runs locally or in a cloud environment. Verify the active environment’s settings instead of carrying assumptions over from another runtime.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a permission prompt protect tools other than shell commands?

Not automatically. VS Code notes that non-process tools have separate permission checks, so review those controls too when an agent can use tools beyond the terminal.

Should I allow network access if an agent needs to install or fetch something?

Only if the task requires it, and only within the network controls your harness supports. Treat network access separately from filesystem access, and verify which destinations are permitted rather than assuming that a writable workspace requires unrestricted network access.

Is command auto-approval safe if I approve only familiar commands?

Narrow rules are safer than broad ones, but they are not a complete security boundary. VS Code warns that terminal parsing is best effort and may miss shell syntax or obfuscation. Keep sandbox restrictions and review consequential actions.

What should I do with permissions I previously chose to remember?

Check the grant’s scope and duration. Depending on the product, it may apply to a repository or directory, a URL domain across sessions, or an action for the current session. Remove grants that the task no longer needs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

To reduce the risk of unintended commands, restrict filesystem and network access to what the task needs, require approval for consequential actions, and keep auto-approval rules narrow. Then test both allowed and restricted cases in the exact runtime you plan to use, and review saved permissions when the task changes. A prompt, a command rule or a product label is not a substitute for verifying the actual boundary.
