To stop a chatbot from using future chats to train or improve its models, turn off that service’s relevant privacy or data-control setting. The steps differ: ChatGPT calls it “Improve the model for everyone,” Claude calls it “Help Improve our AI models,” Gemini uses “Keep Activity,” and Copilot has separate training controls for text and voice conversations. These settings generally do not delete existing history or stop every kind of retention, safety review, or product improvement.
What does turning off chatbot training actually do?
It tells a particular provider not to use eligible future conversations to train its AI models under the scope described for that setting. It is not a universal privacy switch: you must change the setting in each service you use, and a setting may cover only certain kinds of conversations or account types.
Training, chat history, retention, safety review, and general product improvement are separate matters. A conversation can be excluded from future model training while remaining visible in your history or being retained temporarily for service delivery, security, or other stated purposes. A training opt-out also does not remove information already incorporated into a model that has been trained.

How do I stop my chats from training ChatGPT?
For a personal Free, Plus, or Pro workspace, switch off “Improve the model for everyone.” OpenAI’s help documentation says new conversations will then not be used to train OpenAI models.
- Open ChatGPT while signed in.
- Open Settings, then Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- If you use voice mode, check its separate training-sharing control as well.
On signed-in web and mobile, this setting applies across devices. It does not erase saved chats: they can remain in your history, and archiving a chat does not change its training eligibility. In other words, moving a conversation out of the main list is an organizational action, not a data-use change.
OpenAI also says that if you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback after opting out, the conversation associated with that feedback may be used for training. Therefore, treat a feedback submission as a separate choice. If a conversation contains material you do not want considered for training, do not attach a rating or written feedback to it after opting out.
When is Temporary Chat useful?
Temporary Chat is an alternative when you do not want a conversation to appear in history or improve models while it remains temporary. OpenAI says it may retain temporary conversations for up to 30 days for safety. That period is a retention allowance for safety processing, not a promise that the conversation is deleted the moment you close the window.
If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat governed by the account’s settings. Saving therefore changes the status you should expect: it can enter normal history, and the ordinary account controls apply. Use the temporary option deliberately for a single session rather than assuming it changes the global setting.
What if I use a work, education, or API account?
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API inputs and outputs are not used to train models by default, according to OpenAI’s documentation. These are distinct account contexts, so do not treat the personal-account setting as a universal control or assume the same menus apply. A person who uses both a personal account and an employer’s workspace should check which account is active before entering sensitive information.
How do I turn off model improvement in Claude?
For consumer Claude plans, go to Settings > Privacy and switch off Help Improve our AI models. Anthropic’s Privacy Center page dated August 3, 2026, says this prevents new chats and coding sessions from being used for future model training.

- Sign in to the consumer Claude account you use.
- Open Settings, then Privacy.
- Switch off Help Improve our AI models.
- When using Claude Code on an eligible consumer plan, remember that the same consumer privacy choice is intended to cover coding sessions too.
The control is forward-looking: turning it off does not remove material already included in training that has started or in models already trained. It is consequently not a way to “unlearn” a past conversation from an already-trained model.
Anthropic also identifies an exception for conversations flagged by safety classifiers. Those conversations may still be used for trust-and-safety models, policy enforcement, or safety research. The exception concerns safety handling, so turning off model improvement should not be described as stopping every internal use of every conversation.
Claude for Work and API offerings have separate terms. Check the terms and controls for that account context rather than applying consumer steps to it. If you move between a personal Claude login and an organization-managed login, verify the account identity in the profile area before changing or relying on a setting.

For a personal Google account, turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity. Google says future chats will not appear in Activity or train its AI models unless you choose to send feedback.
- Open the profile menu and select Gemini Apps Activity. On the web app, you can instead use Settings & help > Activity.
- Turn Keep Activity off.
- Read the confirmation and note any change to connected-app availability.
- If you use a work or school account and cannot change the setting, check with your Workspace administrator.
Turning Keep Activity off does not mean every record disappears immediately. Google says chats may still be retained for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect users. That short-term retention is separate from whether the chats appear in Activity or are used to train the models.
Google also says that if you choose to send feedback, a chat may be used despite the ordinary Keep Activity opt-out. Feedback is therefore an explicit exception to remember when rating an answer, reporting a problem, or adding comments to a rating.
What happens if Keep Activity stays on?
Google says activity may be used to develop and improve services, including training generative AI models, and that human reviewers may review some data. The default auto-delete period is 18 months; Google also offers 3-month, 36-month, and indefinite options. These are activity-retention choices, not model-training switches.

Human-reviewed data and related information may be retained for up to three years even if you delete activity. Deleting an activity record should therefore not be presented as an immediate eraser for every copy or associated review material.

Google says improvement of audio and Gemini Live video or screen-sharing data is separately off by default unless enabled. This separate setting is not a substitute for checking the main activity control. If you use text chats, voice, Live video, or screen sharing, inspect the relevant controls instead of assuming one modality’s default applies to all the others.
How do I turn off training in Microsoft Copilot?
For signed-in Copilot, open profile settings and go to Privacy. Turn off both Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations if you want to exclude future text and voice conversation activity from model training.
- Sign in to Copilot and open your profile settings.
- Select Privacy.
- Turn off Training on conversation activity.
- Turn off Training on voice conversations as well if you use voice conversations.
- Return to the privacy page and confirm that both controls remain off.
Microsoft’s support documentation says opting out excludes future conversation activity from training these AI models, but expressly distinguishes this from other uses. The setting does not opt you out of general product or system improvements, advertising, digital safety, security, or compliance purposes.
Microsoft describes separate history retention and deletion controls, so changing the training options should not be treated as deleting conversation history. If your goal is to remove stored conversations, use those history or deletion controls separately and read their stated scope.
Training opt-out versus deletion: what is the difference?
A training opt-out answers, “May this eligible future conversation be used to improve a model?” Deletion answers, “Which stored records can I remove, and when?” Retention answers, “How long may a provider keep information for service, safety, feedback, or compliance?” These questions overlap but are not interchangeable.
ChatGPT saved chats can remain in history after the model-improvement setting is disabled. Gemini chats can remain for up to 72 hours after Keep Activity is turned off, and Google documents longer periods for activity and human-reviewed data when applicable. Copilot provides separate history controls. Claude’s consumer setting stops future model-training use but does not withdraw information already included in training.
Before changing a setting, decide which outcome you actually need: no future model training, no visible history, deletion of existing records, or reduced use for a specific modality. You may need more than one control to address more than one outcome.

What should I check after changing a setting?
Confirm the account and scope before relying on the change. Provider settings can differ for personal, business, education, API, or administrator-managed accounts, and some controls apply only to future conversations or a specific modality.

- Check each service separately. A device-level or browser-level change does not change settings for every chatbot provider.
- Verify the active account. A personal login, a company workspace, a school account, and an API project can have different defaults.
- Read the exact label. Note whether it covers text, voice, coding sessions, Live video, screen sharing, or only future chats.
- Check the status after saving. Reopen the privacy page or activity panel to make sure the control shows the intended off state.
- Keep training separate from deletion. Use the provider’s history or deletion controls if your goal is to remove stored conversations, and check the provider’s retention terms for what deletion does and does not cover.
- Be deliberate with feedback. OpenAI and Google both describe feedback-related exceptions to their training opt-outs.
- Account for safety processing. Claude identifies a safety-classifier exception, Gemini describes service and user-protection retention, and Microsoft lists digital-safety and compliance uses outside its training opt-out.
- Recheck managed accounts with an administrator. Work and school settings may be governed by organization policy, and you may not be able to change them yourself.
- Use temporary options carefully. A temporary chat can have a separate retention period, and saving it can change its status to a regular conversation.
What these controls do not prove
These settings do not establish a complete comparison of each provider’s data practices, and they are not a basis for ranking one chatbot as more private overall. The official documentation describes distinct scopes and exceptions. A provider can exclude future chats from model training while still processing information for safety, service delivery, security, advertising, compliance, feedback, or other product purposes described in its terms.
Do not infer that an opt-out is retroactive. ChatGPT and Claude describe protection for new conversations or future training, and Claude specifically says already-trained material is not removed. Do not infer that a setting transfers between products: a control for text chats may not cover voice, coding, or Live features. Do not infer that deleting an activity record immediately removes every copy, particularly where a provider documents review-related retention.
For chatbots beyond ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Copilot, verify the relevant provider’s current privacy controls rather than assuming one of these procedures applies. Menu names and policies can change, so use the labels shown in your own account and read the explanatory text next to the switch.

If you use personal ChatGPT, turn off Improve the model for everyone; use Temporary Chat when you also want to avoid ordinary history, while remembering the 30-day safety-retention statement. If you use consumer Claude, turn off Help Improve our AI models, including for coding sessions, and remember the safety-classifier exception. If you use personal Gemini, turn off Keep Activity, understand the possible 72-hour retention and connected-app limits, and avoid submitting feedback on a chat you want excluded. If you use signed-in Copilot, turn off both text and voice training controls and remember that other product, advertising, safety, security, and compliance uses remain separate.

Does archiving a ChatGPT conversation stop it from being used for training?

Does turning off ChatGPT model improvement delete saved chats?
No. OpenAI’s control stops new conversations from being used to train models, but saved chats can remain in your history. Use separate history or deletion controls if you want to remove them.

Turning Keep Activity off also restricts which connected apps are available, according to Google. Review that trade-off before changing the setting.
Does Microsoft Copilot’s training opt-out stop all use of my conversations?
No. Microsoft says the opt-out excludes future conversation activity from model training, but does not exclude general product or system improvements, advertising, digital safety, security, or compliance uses.
Are Claude coding sessions covered by the consumer privacy switch?
Anthropic says the consumer setting applies to new chats and coding sessions on Free, Pro, and Max plans, including Claude Code on those plans.
Does turning off a training setting remove information from an already-trained model?
Generally, no. The documented controls are forward-looking, and Anthropic explicitly says material already included in training or already-trained models is not removed by switching the setting off.
