To stop a local LLM from repeating itself, tune the runtime’s repetition controls before changing the model. In Ollama, adjust repeat_penalty and repeat_last_n, then use sampling limits, stop sequences, and an output-length cap. In Hugging Face Transformers, use repetition_penalty and, when exact phrases recur, no_repeat_ngram_size. Make one change at a time while keeping the model, prompt, context, seed, maximum output, and runtime version fixed.
A loop can also originate outside decoding. Duplicated instructions, repeated retrieved passages, a malformed chat template, or a truncated system prompt can make a healthy checkpoint appear broken. The reliable fix is therefore a short diagnostic sequence: inspect the rendered context, apply the narrowest repetition constraint, retest, and only then broaden sampling or add a hard stop.
Why does a local LLM repeat itself?
Repetition is usually a decoding or context problem rather than proof that the checkpoint is unusable. The same phrase may be selected again and again when generation is overly deterministic, when the runtime is not penalizing recent tokens, or when the prompt itself contains duplicated material. A model can also continue a loop because nothing tells it where to stop.
Recommended Free Tools
Treat the symptom precisely. A single repeated word, a recurring sentence, and a whole paragraph copied several times require different controls. Token-level penalties are broad; n-gram blocking targets exact phrase patterns; sampling changes how candidates are selected; stop sequences and length limits terminate generation without changing the model’s word choices.

How do I make the looping failure reproducible?
Reproduce the failure before tuning. If every trial changes several variables, you cannot tell which setting helped or whether a model or runtime update changed the result.
- Freeze the model identity. Record the checkpoint or model tag, quantization choice, and runtime version. Do not switch models between trials.
- Freeze the prompt. Save the exact system message, user message, chat template, retrieved passages, and any formatting added by your application.
- Keep context settings constant. Use the same context length and confirm that the complete system prompt and user input are actually present.
- Control randomness where supported. Keep the same seed, temperature, top-k, and top-p while testing a repetition setting.
- Cap the output consistently. Keep the maximum generation length unchanged so one run is not simply allowed to continue longer.
- Run the same prompt three times. Compare where the loop begins, whether the repeated unit is a token or phrase, and whether the output eventually stops.
Keep a small test record containing the prompt, model, runtime version, parameter values, and output. That record lets you distinguish a real improvement from a one-off sample.
Could the prompt or context be causing the loop?
Yes. Inspect the fully rendered prompt before changing decoding. A duplicated instruction, a retrieved document inserted twice, a malformed chat template, or truncation that removes the system message can produce repetitive behavior even when generation settings are reasonable.

Separate prompt faults from decoding faults
Run the minimal prompt with the same model and settings. If the loop disappears, fix prompt assembly or retrieval before raising penalties. If it remains, keep the prompt fixed and proceed to runtime controls.
Which Ollama settings reduce repetition?
Ollama exposes separate controls for repeated tokens, sampling, termination, and output length. Start with repeat_penalty and repeat_last_n; use the other parameters after you understand the effect of that first change.

|---|---|---|---|
repeat_penalty |
Repeated-token penalty | Sets how strongly repetitions are penalized. | Raise it gradually when the same words or phrases recur. |
repeat_last_n |
Recent-token look-back | Sets how far back the runtime looks to prevent repetition. 0 disables the check; -1 uses the context size. |
Increase the window when a loop begins outside the current short tail; use 0 only to disable the check for diagnosis. |
temperature |
Sampling distribution | Changes the sharpness of the sampling distribution. | Make a modest increase when output is excessively deterministic; reverse it if coherence falls. |
top_k |
Candidate selection by rank | Restricts candidates by their rank. | Broaden the candidate pool slightly when a narrow choice set keeps selecting the same continuation. |
top_p |
Candidate selection by cumulative probability | Restricts candidates by cumulative probability. | Broaden the probability mass slightly when decoding is too predictable. |
stop |
Termination | Stops generation when a configured sequence is matched. | End a response at a known delimiter, heading marker, or application boundary. |
num_predict |
Output length | Bounds the number of tokens generated. | Prevent an application from running indefinitely when semantic stopping is unreliable. |
The look-back window matters. A penalty cannot affect tokens outside the range Ollama checks, so a short repeat_last_n may miss a longer cycle. Setting it to -1 makes the look-back correspond to the context size; setting it to 0 turns the repetition check off.
How should I change Ollama settings without making prose unnatural?
Change one control, rerun the fixed prompt, and inspect both repetition and fluency. A stronger penalty can break a loop but also discourage legitimate reuse of a technical term, a name, or a required heading. If the response becomes choppy, evasive, or omits necessary words, undo the last increase instead of stacking more penalties.
Start with the penalty and window
- Record the current
repeat_penaltyandrepeat_last_n. - Increase the penalty by a small amount, leaving temperature, top-k, top-p, stop, and output length unchanged.
- Retest the same prompt and note the first repeated token or phrase.
- If the loop remains, verify that
repeat_last_ncovers enough recent context. Try a broader window rather than immediately applying a much stronger penalty.
Use sampling only after that check
If the model is still choosing the same continuation, make a modest change to temperature, top-k, or top-p—not all three at once. Temperature changes distribution sharpness; top-k limits by rank; top-p limits by cumulative probability. Broader sampling can reduce deterministic loops, but excessive diversity can reduce consistency and factual control.
Add a stop and a length bound
For an application that must terminate, configure a stop sequence that is guaranteed to appear at the intended boundary and set num_predict to a safe maximum. A stop sequence handles a known textual delimiter; the length limit is the fallback when the delimiter never appears.
What are the equivalent controls in Hugging Face Transformers?
Transformers separates token penalties from n-gram constraints. repetition_penalty penalizes tokens that have already been generated; 1.0 means no penalty, while values above 1.0 apply a penalty. no_repeat_ngram_size blocks an n-gram of the selected size from appearing again. For encoder-decoder models, encoder_no_repeat_ngram_size provides the analogous encoder-aware constraint.

| Transformers parameter | Control type | Effect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
repetition_penalty |
Token-level | Penalizes previously generated tokens; 1.0 leaves them unpenalized. |
Broad protection can reduce natural reuse of important words. |
no_repeat_ngram_size |
N-gram blocking | When greater than zero, all n-grams of that size can occur only once. | Stops exact phrase loops but can suppress legitimate recurring phrases. |
encoder_no_repeat_ngram_size |
Encoder-decoder n-gram constraint | Applies the analogous no-repeat rule with the encoder input in scope. | Use only when the model architecture and task call for an encoder-aware constraint. |
Minimal generation pattern
outputs = model.generate(n **inputs,n repetition_penalty=repetition_penalty,n no_repeat_ngram_size=no_repeat_ngram_size,n encoder_no_repeat_ngram_size=encoder_no_repeat_ngram_size,n temperature=temperature,n top_k=top_k,n top_p=top_p,n max_new_tokens=max_new_tokens,n)
Use the smallest constraint that addresses the observed failure. If a sentence repeats word-for-word, an n-gram rule is more targeted than a large token penalty. If the model merely feels too deterministic, sampling changes are more appropriate than blocking phrases.

repeat_last_nis not too short. Remember that0disables the check and-1uses the context size. - Block exact n-gram loops. In Transformers, set
no_repeat_ngram_sizewhen a phrase pattern repeats exactly. In an encoder-decoder task, consider the encoder-aware parameter. - Adjust sampling. Make one modest change to temperature, top-k, or top-p if the output is still too deterministic. Reverse the change if coherence or factual consistency worsens.
- Add termination controls. Configure a stop sequence and a maximum output length for reliable application behavior.
- Retest after every model or runtime change. Quantization, checkpoint versions, prompt templates, and runtime defaults can all alter repetition behavior.
Which control should I choose for each symptom?
The same word appears continuously
Begin with a token-level penalty and verify the recent-token window. A narrow window may not cover the cycle. Avoid jumping straight to a severe penalty, because it can make ordinary terminology disappear.
The same sentence or phrase is copied
Use an n-gram constraint in Transformers or inspect the prompt for that phrase appearing in retrieved material. N-gram blocking is deliberately strict: it prevents the selected n-gram from occurring again, so repeated boilerplate that is actually required may be suppressed.
The answer is coherent but never ends
This is a termination problem rather than a repetition problem. Add a stop sequence for the expected delimiter and set a maximum output length such as Ollama’s num_predict or the corresponding generation limit in your Transformers call.

The model loops only with one prompt
Compare the rendered prompt with a minimal version. Duplicated instructions, repeated retrieval chunks, malformed role markers, or system-message truncation are more likely than a defective checkpoint when other prompts behave normally.
The model changes from run to run
Fix the seed where supported and hold sampling settings constant. Tune repetition controls only after you can tell a parameter effect from ordinary sampling variation.
The output becomes awkward after tuning
Undo the last penalty or n-gram change and try a narrower intervention. Raising diversity slightly may be preferable to a stronger repetition block when the model needs to reuse names, terminology, or structural labels.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do stop sequences and length limits work together?
A stop sequence is content-aware: generation ends when the configured text is matched. It is useful when your prompt establishes a delimiter such as the beginning of a new role or a closing marker. It cannot help if the model never emits that delimiter, so pair it with a maximum token limit.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The length limit is content-agnostic. It guarantees that a runaway loop consumes no more than the configured budget, but it may cut off a valid answer. Choose a limit that fits the application’s normal response size and treat the stop sequence as the preferred ending.

How can I compare repetition fixes?
Evaluate each change on the same axes instead of judging only whether the loop stopped.
| Approach | Scope | Diversity effect | Risk to fluency or factual consistency | Rollback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Repetition penalty | Tokens already generated | Discourages reuse | Too much pressure can make wording unnatural or omit necessary terms | Restore the previous penalty value |
| Recent-token window | Range inspected for repeats | Changes how much history is considered | A window that is too broad can penalize legitimate long-form reuse | Restore the prior window or use 0 to disable for diagnosis |
| No-repeat n-gram | Exact n-gram patterns | Removes specific phrase repetitions | Can suppress valid recurring phrases | Set the parameter back to zero or remove it |
| Temperature, top-k, or top-p | Sampling distribution or candidate set | Can broaden or narrow variation | More diversity can reduce consistency; less can preserve a loop | Restore the former sampling value |
| Stop sequence | Textual termination boundary | Does not alter token selection before the match | An overly broad sequence can end a valid response early | Remove or replace the sequence |
| Maximum output length | Total generated tokens | Does not change diversity | May truncate a useful answer | Restore the former limit |
How do I keep a fix stable in an application?
Store the complete generation configuration with every test and deployment: model or checkpoint tag, quantization, runtime version, prompt template, context length, seed where supported, repetition settings, sampling settings, stop sequences, and output limit. A parameter that works on one model version may behave differently after a checkpoint, quantization, or runtime-default change.
Keep a regression prompt that previously looped and run it whenever any of those components changes. Inspect the first repeated unit, not just the final text, because a token loop, an n-gram loop, and an endless but nonrepeating answer point to different remedies. If a change fixes repetition but harms required terminology or answer completeness, prefer a narrower control or a prompt correction over a stronger global penalty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a repetition loop mean the model checkpoint is defective?
Not necessarily. A loop that appears only with one rendered prompt often points to duplicated context, a role-template error, or truncation, while a loop that persists with a minimal prompt is stronger evidence of a decoding or model issue. Reproduce it with fixed settings before replacing the checkpoint.
When is Ollama’s repeat_last_n value of 0 useful?
Use 0 as a diagnostic control when you need to confirm that the repetition checker is involved. Because it disables the check, it is not a general fix for looping; restore a positive window or use the context-size behavior after the comparison.
Can no-repeat n-grams damage a technical answer?
Yes. Technical writing may need to repeat an API name, a proper noun, or a required heading, and an n-gram constraint can block that legitimate reuse. Apply it to narrowly defined phrase loops and check terminology coverage in the resulting answer.
Should I raise temperature before raising a repetition penalty?
Usually test the repetition-specific control first so you know whether the loop responds to direct suppression. If the output is simply too deterministic after that check, make one modest sampling change and reverse it if coherence or factual consistency declines.
