Online safety is mostly a set of repeatable habits: use a different long password for every important account, add multi-factor authentication (MFA), install updates promptly, verify unexpected messages before acting, reduce what strangers can see on social media, and know how to recover if something goes wrong. No single setting prevents every attack, but these steps block the most common routes to account takeover, fraud, and identity theft.

Start with the six protections that matter most

  1. Use long, unique passwords. A password should not be reused across sites. If you create one yourself, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) consumer guidance says to aim for at least 15 characters. A passphrase made from several unrelated words can be easier to remember. A reputable password manager, or the password tool built into your browser or device, can generate and store unique passwords for you.
  2. Turn on MFA for important accounts. Protect email first, then banking, shopping, cloud storage, social media, and any account containing personal or work information. MFA requires an additional proof of identity after the password.
  3. Update everything. Install operating-system, browser, mobile-app, security-software, and firmware updates promptly. Updates commonly include critical security patches. Enable automatic updates when practical.
  4. Pause before clicking. Treat unexpected links, attachments, login prompts, payment requests, and urgent social-media offers as suspicious until independently verified.
  5. Reduce public exposure. Review who can see your posts, profile details, contact list, location, and tagged content. Public information gives scammers material for convincing impersonation.
  6. Prepare a recovery route. Keep current recovery email addresses or phone numbers, save backup codes securely, and know the legitimate recovery page for each critical account.

These controls reinforce one another. A unique password limits damage from a breach elsewhere; MFA can stop a thief who obtains that password; updates close software weaknesses; and verification habits prevent you from handing over a valid login yourself.

Build passwords that hold up

Choose length and uniqueness

Length is the practical advantage consumers can control. Use at least 15 characters when making a password yourself, and make every account’s password different. Do not modify one base password with a site name or a changing number: attackers routinely test those patterns. Avoid names, birthdays, addresses, pet names, sports teams, keyboard sequences, and words connected to your public profile.

CISA’s August 2025 fact sheet specifies a 16-character policy for state, local, tribal, and territorial (SLTT) government accounts. That is public-sector guidance, not a universal consumer requirement; for personal accounts, the FTC’s 15-character advice is a useful minimum when you create a password manually.

Use a password manager safely

A password manager can create random passwords, fill them only on the correct domain, and alert you to reused or exposed credentials. Use a strong, unique master passphrase, protect the manager with MFA, and keep its recovery information somewhere you can access during an emergency. A built-in browser or device manager is also reasonable if it is kept updated and protected by your device lock.

  • Store each account’s recovery codes in an encrypted vault or another offline location.
  • Never share your master password or approve an unexpected sign-in request.
  • When a service reports a breach, change that service’s password immediately; change any other account that reused it.

Choose the strongest MFA option your account supports

MFA is not one technology. The best choice depends on what the service and your devices support, how resistant the method is to phishing, and how you will recover access if a phone or key is lost. The FTC states: “The more secure types of two-factor authentication are an authenticator app or a security key.”

  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
MFA method Phishing resistance Compatibility and effort Recovery considerations
Physical security key (FIDO) Highest among the methods listed by CISA when properly supported Requires a compatible USB, NFC, or Bluetooth connection and account support; setup is quick but the key must be available Keep a second enrolled key or another recovery method; check compatibility with each account, phone, and computer before buying
Authenticator app with number matching Very strong; CISA ranks it below security keys Works on many services; you approve a matching number in the app Enroll a backup device or save the service’s recovery codes before replacing a phone
Authenticator app with one-time codes Stronger than text or email, but codes can still be entered on a phishing site Broad support; enter a rotating code from the app Protect the app backup and recovery codes; time can become unsynchronized if a device is restored incorrectly
Biometrics Best used as an additional factor, rather than your only account recovery method Convenient on supported phones and computers Maintain a non-biometric recovery route if the sensor or device fails
Text-message or email code Lower protection in CISA’s ranking; vulnerable to number takeover, mailbox compromise, or interception Familiar and widely available Keep the phone number or email account secure; replace this method with an app or key when the service allows

To enable MFA, open the account’s settings, look for Security, Sign-in and security, or Two-step verification, choose the strongest available method, and complete a test sign-in. Save the one-time backup codes while you are still logged in. Never approve a prompt you did not initiate; repeated unexpected prompts can indicate that someone already has your password.

Keep devices and software patched

The FTC recommends prompt updates for computers, tablets, and phones, including security software, browsers, operating systems, and mobile apps. Updates often contain critical patches and protections, so postponing them leaves known weaknesses exposed.

  1. Turn on automatic updates for the operating system and installed apps where the device offers that option.
  2. Allow automatic browser updates and restart when requested so the patch becomes active.
  3. Update routers, smart-home devices, game consoles, and other connected equipment through the manufacturer’s official settings or app.
  4. Remove software you no longer use, especially programs that no longer receive security updates.
  5. Restart after a major update and check that security protection is running normally.

Download updates only through the device’s built-in updater or the software maker’s legitimate site. A pop-up claiming that your computer is infected and demanding an immediate payment is not a trustworthy update process.

Recognize and verify phishing

Warning signs

  • An unexpected message says your account will close, a payment failed, or a package is waiting.
  • The sender asks for a password, one-time code, gift card, bank transfer, or remote access.
  • The link’s displayed text does not match the destination, or the domain contains extra words, misspellings, or unusual characters.
  • The request creates pressure, secrecy, or an emotional appeal.
  • A login page appears after you clicked a message rather than after you opened the service yourself.

Verify without using the message

Do not click an unexpected email or text link. Instead, open the organization’s known official website by typing its address or using a saved bookmark, or call a genuine number from a statement or the back of a card. Check the account there. Do not use the phone number, reply address, or link supplied in the suspicious message.

Shop and communicate safely on social media

Social platforms combine public personal details with fast, informal contact, making them useful to impersonators and fraudulent sellers. FTC data for 2025, released in 2026, found that nearly 30% of people who reported losing money to a scam said it started on social media. Reported losses reached $2.1 billion, eight times the reported 2020 level. These figures cover reported cases and losses, not every scam or every victim.

Lock down visibility

  • Set posts and stories to friends or a custom audience instead of public.
  • Restrict who can see your friends or followers, phone number, email address, birthday, and location.
  • Review tagging, mentions, direct-message requests, and search-by-phone settings.
  • Remove old public posts that reveal travel plans, workplace details, family relationships, or security-question answers.
  • Turn on login alerts and MFA in the platform’s security settings.

Check offers and investment claims

Do not take investment direction from someone known only through social media. For a purchase, research the company independently by searching its name with “scam” or “complaint,” compare contact details on its official site, and pay through a method with meaningful dispute protection. A polished profile, copied reviews, or a familiar logo does not prove that the account is genuine.

Protect your email, phone, and recovery channels

Your primary email account is often the reset key for every other account. Give it a unique password and the strongest available MFA. Review forwarding rules, recovery addresses, logged-in sessions, and third-party apps; remove anything you do not recognize. Set a device lock with a passcode or biometric protection, and ask your mobile provider about an account PIN or other safeguards against unauthorized number changes.

Keep recovery details current, but do not publish them. Store backup codes offline or in your password manager. If a service offers trusted contacts, a second security key, or a printable recovery kit, set it up before you need it.

What to do after an account or identity incident

If an account may be compromised

  1. Use the service’s legitimate recovery process, reached from a typed address or a trusted bookmark.
  2. Change the password and sign out of other sessions or devices.
  3. Revoke unfamiliar apps, browser extensions, and connected devices.
  4. Turn on or strengthen MFA, then replace exposed recovery information.
  5. Tell contacts not to trust recent messages from the account and preserve relevant evidence.

If personal information was misused

Act quickly. Contact affected banks, card issuers, insurers, or service providers through verified channels; ask about freezes, replacement accounts, and fraudulent transactions. The FTC directs people with suspected identity theft to IdentityTheft.gov for reporting and a personalized recovery plan. For scams, the FTC directs consumers to ReportFraud.gov. Follow the instructions those services provide for your situation and keep copies of reports, dates, and case numbers.

A practical monthly safety check

  • Review password-manager alerts for reused, weak, or exposed passwords.
  • Check MFA methods, recovery email addresses, phone numbers, backup codes, and active sessions.
  • Install pending operating-system, browser, app, and router updates.
  • Audit social-media privacy, old public posts, connected apps, and message permissions.
  • Confirm that backups of irreplaceable photos and documents complete successfully and are not permanently connected to the device.
  • Practice reaching the official recovery page for your email and financial accounts without relying on an incoming message.

Online safety is strongest when these checks become routine rather than a response to a frightening alert. Start with your email account and financial accounts today, then apply the same controls to every service that holds sensitive information.
