To spot physics errors in an AI-generated video, slow it down, follow one object or body part across successive frames, and compare its path, speed, contacts and deformations with the mechanism that should produce them. Look for unexplained acceleration, impossible turns, floating or penetrating objects, morphing identities, implausible collisions and joints that bend the wrong way. These observations are warning signs, not standalone proof: real footage can contain edits, compression and unusual events, while a generated clip can look coherent for a few seconds. A reliable judgment combines repeatable frame-level violations with scene logic, audio-video agreement and source provenance.
How can I tell if an AI video breaks physics?
Use a repeatable inspection rather than relying on a single uncanny frame. Establish what should happen, measure the motion over several frames, inspect contact and continuity, then corroborate the result with evidence outside the pixels.
- State the expected mechanism. A dropped object should accelerate downward under gravity; a rolling object should follow a continuous path; a collision should transfer momentum and alter motion; a supported object should remain supported rather than hover.
- Track one trajectory. Pause or advance frame by frame and mark the same point on the object. Note abrupt direction or speed changes that have no visible force, jitter, or a path that is implausibly smooth for the scene.
- Inspect contact and support. Follow feet, wheels, hands, containers and surfaces. Look for floating, sliding without plausible friction, penetration through a table or wall, or an impact with no visible response.
- Check temporal continuity. Watch whether objects, body parts and backgrounds keep their identity, shape and rigidity. Pop-in, disappearance and shape morphing are stronger when they persist across neighboring frames.
- Check energy, momentum and scale. A bounce, break, splash or impact should have a plausible outcome for the apparent masses, sizes, gravity rate and timing.
- Check anatomy and articulated motion. Follow joints through turns, impacts and weight shifts. Impossible bends, rubber-like limbs and feet that disconnect from the ground are high-value clues.
- Corroborate. Combine the physics observation with provenance, semantic logic and audio-video agreement. A single odd frame may be compression or editing; a repeatable violation across many frames is more informative.
The conclusion should be phrased as “this sequence is physically inconsistent in these frames,” not “physics proves it is AI.”
What physical mechanism should the scene obey?
You cannot identify an error until you define the real-world process the clip is depicting. Write that expectation in plain language before inspecting details; it prevents you from treating an unusual but genuine event as a model failure.

Gravity and free fall
For a dropped object, the vertical displacement should change progressively faster in the direction of gravity. A hand releasing a ball should not be followed by a pause, sideways jump or sudden reversal without a visible force. Perspective can make a path look shorter or longer, so compare the same image point and use nearby fixed objects as scale references.
Rolling, sliding and friction
A wheel or ball should remain on a continuous surface and its direction should be explainable by the surface shape, a push or a collision. Sliding that never slows on a rough floor, a wheel that moves sideways while its contact point stays fixed, or an object that changes direction in mid-air without contact indicates a broken motion model.
Support and constraint
Tables, floors, walls, hands and containers provide constraints. A cup resting on a table should not sink into it or hover a few pixels above it while the camera remains steady. A person’s planted foot should anchor the body during a weight shift; if the foot glides while the leg appears rigid, the support relationship is inconsistent.
Collisions and momentum transfer
When one object strikes another, at least one object should change speed, direction or deformation unless the masses and geometry make the response negligible. A heavy object should not visibly recoil more than a light one without an explanation, and a ball should not pass through a surface that appears solid. Examine the frames immediately before and after contact rather than judging the impact pose alone.
How do I check an AI video frame by frame?
Any player that can pause and step through individual frames is sufficient. The important part is keeping the same reference point and recording what changes, rather than scrubbing until you find a dramatic still.
- Work from the highest-quality copy. Re-encoding can create block edges, ringing and dropped frames that resemble tiny motion errors. Preserve the original file and note its frame rate if it is available.
- Choose a reference point. Use the center of a rigid object, the wheel axle, a shoe heel or a joint. Avoid a changing silhouette such as hair, smoke or a splash edge.
- Advance one frame at a time. Record the reference point’s horizontal and vertical position, and note the frame number. A simple spreadsheet is enough; a video-analysis tool can automate plotting.
- Mark forces and contacts. Add notes for release, impact, foot plant, hand contact, bounce and visible deformation. A speed change is only suspicious when no such event explains it.
- Compare neighboring intervals. Estimate how far the point moves per frame, then compare that spacing before and after each event. Isolated jitter is weaker evidence than a repeated pattern.
- Review at normal speed. After measuring, watch the clip normally. Some apparent errors are caused by stepping through an interpolated or motion-blurred frame and disappear when the sequence is viewed continuously.
For a falling-object check, calibrate the image scale with an object of known or consistent size, mark the object’s center in successive frames, plot position against time and compare the curve with the gravitational motion expected for that setup. Bor Gregorcic’s 2025 Physics Education activity uses this real-versus-AI comparison with an online video-analysis tool as a reproducible classroom and forensic method.

Which contact and collision errors give away generated motion?
Contact errors are useful because surfaces impose clear constraints. Inspect the exact frames in which two things meet, not just the beginning and end of the action.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Floating: feet, wheels or a cup remain visibly separated from the supporting surface while moving as if attached to it.
- Sliding without friction: a planted shoe or a box glides across a rough surface with no leg or push motion to account for it.
- Interpenetration: a hand clips through a tabletop, a wheel enters a curb, or a body passes through a wall before emerging intact.
- Missing reaction: a collision occurs, but neither object changes velocity, rotates, compresses or transfers debris in a plausible way.
- Wrong constraint: a hinged or grasped object rotates around a point that is not the hinge or grip, or a container fails to constrain liquid and solids that should be inside it.
- Impossible rebound: a light object launches a much heavier one at high speed, or a bounce returns with more apparent energy than the impact supplied without an external source.
Perspective can hide a narrow gap, and soft materials can deform without a sharp rebound. Treat a contact clue as strong only when the geometry is visible across several frames and the camera angle does not provide a plausible alternative.
How do morphing, pop-in and disappearing objects expose a physics error?
Temporal continuity asks whether the scene remains the same scene from one frame to the next. Generated video systems may preserve a broad action while losing the identity, rigidity or count of individual objects.
Appearance and disappearance
Count objects before and after an event. A glass that shatters should produce fragments; it should not become a whole glass again a few frames later. A person’s hand should not vanish during a reach and reappear in a different location without an occlusion that explains the change.
Morphing and changing rigidity
Rigid items such as tools, furniture and vehicle parts should keep their proportions while moving. If a straight handle bends like rubber, a wheel changes from round to oval without impact, or a solid object changes material between frames, mark the transition and inspect adjacent frames for a repeated shape drift.

How should I judge energy, deformation and scale?
Physics is not only about where an object goes; it is also about how much energy and momentum the event can plausibly produce. Use the scene’s apparent scale and timing before calling a result impossible.
Bounces and rebounds
Most real bounces lose energy, so the rebound height and speed are usually lower than the incoming values unless a spring, motor or other source adds energy. A clip that shows identical or greater bounce height without such a source deserves frame-by-frame measurement.
Breaks, splashes and compression
Breaking glass, crumpling metal, compressing foam and splashing liquid all create secondary motion. Look for fragments or droplets that inherit a plausible direction from the impact. A clean, delayed explosion of pieces, or a splash that forms before the object touches the liquid, violates the event’s causal order.
Scale and timing
Compare the apparent size of the object with the time available for its movement. A person-sized object crossing a room in a few frames, or a tiny object falling at a visibly slow rate while nearby objects move normally, may indicate inconsistent scale. Camera zoom and cuts can change apparent speed, so measure within one uninterrupted shot.
What anatomy mistakes are especially revealing?
Human and animal motion combines rigid bones, joint limits, balance and ground contact, giving you several checks at once.
- Trace a limb from shoulder or hip through elbow or knee to wrist or ankle. A joint that bends backward or changes its number of segments is anatomically inconsistent.
- Watch weight transfer. When a person turns or stops, the torso, pelvis and planted foot should coordinate; a foot that stays fixed while the pelvis moves through it, or a body that turns without shifting balance, is suspicious.
- Inspect hands during grasping. Fingers should wrap around an object and remain attached to it; clipping, fused digits and changing grip geometry are common continuity failures.
- Check gait cycles. Feet should alternate support and swing, and the stride should match the person’s forward displacement. Disconnected feet, skating or sudden leg-length changes are stronger than a momentary blur.
- For animals, follow the spine and joint sequence rather than judging the silhouette. A plausible-looking outline can still contain an extra bend or a leg that moves independently of the body.
What are the main categories of physics errors in AI video?
A useful taxonomy keeps you from treating every oddity as the same problem. Spotlight’s published taxonomy names six overlapping families; the examples below show what to record.

| Error family | Typical signs | Best confirming observation |
|---|---|---|
| Physical violations | Floating objects, impossible trajectories, unsupported motion | Repeated path or support failure across multiple frames |
| Appearance or disappearance | Objects or body parts pop in, vanish or return changed | Stable camera view showing no occlusion or cut |
| Motion artifacts | Jitter, abrupt speed changes, unnatural turns | Measured displacement changes without a visible force |
| Prompt-adherence failures | The action or object does not match the stated scenario | Semantic mismatch that also causes physical inconsistency |
| Logical errors | Cause and effect occur in the wrong order or objects behave inconsistently | Several linked events contradict the scene’s stated logic |
| Body-pose or anatomy errors | Impossible joints, rubber-like limbs, disconnected feet | Joint tracking through a turn, impact or weight shift |
PhyProbe presents physical-consistency failure as a continuous severity score rather than a binary label. That is a better mental model for inspection: a barely visible one-frame drift and a hand passing through a table are both errors, but they do not carry the same evidentiary weight.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What do published evaluations say about physical realism?
Benchmarks show why physics inspection remains necessary. In Google Research’s 2024 VideoPhy evaluation, the best-performing tested model, CogVideoX-5B, produced clips that both followed the caption and obeyed physical laws in 39.6% of instances. That figure is a benchmark result for the tested prompts and model, not an estimate of how often any particular online video is synthetic.
| Evaluation | What it measured | Reported scope | How to use the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| VideoPhy, Google Research (2024) | Caption adherence together with physical-law compliance | 39.6% for the best-performing tested model, CogVideoX-5B | Generated clips can be semantically right yet physically wrong |
| PhyWorldBench, ICLR (2026) | Physical realism in fundamental, composite and intentionally anti-physics scenarios | 1,050 curated prompts covering object motion, energy conservation, rigid-body interaction and human or animal motion | Tests span more than simple gravity examples |
| ACL survey (2026) | Direction of evaluation practice | Shift from artifact-only detection toward factual-fidelity verification | Check whether events, entities and processes agree with real-world facts |
The PhyWorldBench authors describe physical realism in generated video as “a fundamental challenge.” The implication for viewers is practical: a clip can satisfy its text prompt while still failing the mechanics that make the depicted event believable.
How can I make a reproducible frame-and-trajectory measurement?
Use the following protocol when you need evidence that another person can inspect, such as for a classroom exercise, fact-check or forensic note.
- Isolate one uninterrupted shot. Record the start and end frame and exclude cuts, fades and speed ramps.
- Calibrate scale. Select a reference length in the same depth plane as the moving object. If no reliable length is visible, report pixel positions rather than converting to meters.
- Define coordinates. Choose a fixed origin and record the object’s center, axle or joint at equal frame intervals. Keep the image coordinate convention consistent, noting that downward may be positive in a video frame.
- Plot position against time. A freely falling object should follow a smooth accelerating curve over the measured interval, subject to camera motion and perspective. Sudden kinks or reversals require a force or contact explanation.
- Annotate events. Mark release, collision, bounce, occlusion and camera movement on the plot. Do not interpret a segment hidden by an occluder as measured evidence.
- Repeat the pass. Have a second observer mark the same feature or remeasure after a break. Agreement makes the result less dependent on a subjective point choice.
- Save an audit trail. Keep the original file, frame numbers, marked screenshots, scale assumption and any export settings. This lets others distinguish a generation error from re-encoding or editing.
How strong is the evidence that a clip is AI-generated?
Separate the strength of the physics observation from the strength of the authenticity claim. A physics violation can be genuine footage of an unusual event, a compositing mistake, a perspective illusion or a compression artifact.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Evidence level | What you have | Responsible wording |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-level clue | One odd pose, edge or contact in a single frame | “This frame is ambiguous and needs neighboring frames.” |
| Repeatable physical inconsistency | The same object repeatedly changes speed, shape or support without a mechanism | “The sequence is physically inconsistent in these frames.” |
| Corroborated anomaly | Repeatable violation plus identity morphing, semantic failure, audio mismatch or questionable provenance | “Multiple independent clues are consistent with synthetic or manipulated video.” |
| Verified origin | Reliable source records, chain of custody or creator disclosure | Use the origin evidence separately; physics inspection is supporting evidence, not the proof. |
Do not convert a severity score, a strange trajectory or a benchmark percentage into a universal detector. The observation should always name the object, frames, expected mechanism and alternative explanations considered.

What can make real footage look physically wrong?
Several ordinary processes imitate generation errors, so check them before publishing a conclusion.
- Compression and frame loss: block artifacts, motion estimation and dropped frames can create jitter or a temporary shape change.
- Editing and compositing: speed ramps, jump cuts, reversed segments and visual effects can break continuity intentionally.
- Perspective and occlusion: a hidden hand, wheel or support can make a continuous path appear to jump.
- Camera movement: panning, zooming and rolling viewpoints alter apparent trajectories unless the background is used as a reference.
- Unusual but real mechanics: elastic materials, hidden supports, wind, magnets or a powered device may explain an otherwise surprising motion.
Conversely, a short generated segment may avoid obvious errors. Lack of a visible violation is not confirmation of authenticity; it only means this inspection found no decisive inconsistency.
How should I report a suspected physics error?
A concise report should allow someone else to reproduce the observation without trusting your interpretation.

- Identify the file, shot and frame range, and state whether it is an original or re-encoded copy.
- Name the object or body point tracked and give its image coordinates or marked screenshots.

- Describe the observed departure and the frame-to-frame evidence for it.
- List plausible alternatives such as editing, occlusion, camera motion, compression or an external force.
- Separate the finding (“physically inconsistent motion”) from the attribution (“possibly generated or manipulated”).
This format follows the factual-fidelity approach described in the ACL 2026 survey: verify whether the event, entities and physical process remain consistent with real-world facts, rather than searching only for a visual “AI look.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can metadata alone tell me whether a video is AI-generated?
Metadata can support a provenance assessment, but it is not a physics test and is often removed when a file is downloaded or edited. Treat creator disclosures, upload history and file records as a separate evidence stream, then compare them with what the frames show.
What should I do when the video has no visible frame-step control?
Download the highest-quality original permitted by the source and open it in a player or analysis program that displays frame numbers. If the platform has altered the frame rate, record that limitation and avoid claiming precision finer than the available frames.
Why can a physically correct-looking clip still be synthetic?
A model may generate a short, simple motion without an obvious violation, especially when the camera is static and objects are few. Physical coherence therefore lowers suspicion only slightly; it does not establish a real camera recording or an unbroken source.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is a continuous physics score a yes-or-no detector?
No. A continuous score expresses the degree or number of consistency failures, so borderline drift and severe interpenetration should not be treated equally. Use the score to prioritize review and pair it with frame evidence and provenance rather than setting a universal cutoff.
