There is no single visual clue that reliably identifies an AI-generated political ad. A convincing fake may have no obvious glitch, while genuine footage can be misleadingly cropped, dubbed, or given a false caption. The dependable approach is to trace the post to its source, find the earliest available copy, reverse-search distinctive frames, inspect provenance information when it exists, and corroborate the event with independent and official sources before sharing.
This workflow also helps distinguish synthetic media from an authentic but miscaptioned video. Treat detector scores, labels, watermarks, and their absence as evidence to investigate—not as a final verdict.
Why can’t you identify a political deepfake from appearance alone?
Generative video and audio tools can produce realistic faces, voices, lighting, and movement. Compression by social platforms can hide small artifacts, and a real recording may look strange because of a low frame rate, poor lighting, a damaged microphone, or aggressive editing. The New York State Attorney General’s Office states, “It can be very difficult to tell deepfakes from authentic media.”
Visual anomalies are still useful as prompts for closer checking. Watch for hands, teeth, jewelry, text on signs, reflections, shadows, lip movement, repeated background details, and sudden changes in a speaker’s facial features. Listen for unnatural pauses, breath patterns, room acoustics, or audio that drifts out of sync. None of these observations proves that a clip is synthetic.

- A visible glitch does not establish who made it, when it was made, or whether the political claim is true.
- An authentic recording can be cropped, slowed, dubbed, rearranged, or paired with a false caption.
Use appearance as a reason to investigate, not as the investigation’s conclusion.
What should you do before sharing a suspicious political ad?
- Pause. Give extra scrutiny to material that creates strong emotion, demands immediate action, comes from an unknown account, or cannot be corroborated. The Australian Electoral Commission’s Stop and Consider campaign advises checking both content and source, being wary of urgency and anonymous accounts, and not sharing uncertain material.
- Preserve what you saw. Save the post URL, account name, visible caption, publication time, and a copy of the file if the platform permits it. A later edit or deletion can otherwise make comparison difficult. Record whether you saw a complete video, a screenshot, or a screen recording.
- Write down the precise claim. Separate “this person appears in this scene” from claims about where, when, and why the scene occurred. Note any statement about voting dates, locations, eligibility, or procedures as a separate claim requiring official confirmation.
- Find the apparent source. Look for the campaign, broadcaster, public official, or original publisher’s verified account and for a longer or unedited version. A repost, meme account, or anonymous channel is not the origin merely because it posted first in your feed.
- Search for earlier footage. Extract several clear still frames, especially ones containing distinctive signs, landmarks, clothing, vehicles, or stage layouts. Reverse-search those frames and search unusual spoken phrases in quotation marks. Compare the dates, locations, and surrounding events in the results.
- Inspect the file and its provenance. If you can obtain the original file, review Content Credentials, creation or edit history, and embedded metadata. Treat a missing record as inconclusive because ordinary editing, messaging apps, screenshots, and platform conversion can remove metadata.
- Corroborate the event and claim. Check independent reporting, official statements, contemporaneous photographs, an unedited longer recording, or other evidence from the same time and place. If the claim remains unresolved, do not circulate the material as authentic.
How do I establish who posted the ad and what it actually claims?
Record the publication trail
Capture the account or site name, post date, visible description, and any quoted source. Note whether the account is a campaign, a news organization, a government body, a commentator, or an anonymous page. Platform verification badges indicate an account attribute, not that every video or assertion from the account is accurate.
Separate image identity from event context
Ask four different questions: Who is shown? What is happening? Where did it happen? When did it happen? A reverse search may identify the people correctly while revealing that the event occurred years earlier or in another country. A clip can therefore contain genuine pixels and still support a false political message.
Treat voting instructions as a special-risk claim
For registration, polling locations, deadlines, identification requirements, or eligibility, go directly to the election authority for your jurisdiction. New York’s Attorney General cautions voters not to rely on unofficial sources or chatbots for voting information. An ad’s confident tone, apparent official branding, or AI label does not replace an authoritative election notice.

How can reverse image search reveal the original video?
Reverse image search works best when you provide representative frames rather than a blurry screenshot of a player interface. Pause the video on several distinctive moments, crop out borders and controls, and save frames at the highest available resolution. Search multiple frames because one may be a newly generated image while another matches an older recording.
- Choose a frame with a unique landmark, sign, logo, stage arrangement, vehicle, or item of clothing.
- Crop tightly enough to emphasize the distinctive subject while leaving useful environmental detail.
- Run the frame through a reverse image search service and inspect visually similar results as well as exact matches.
- Open the earliest credible result, not merely the result with the highest engagement.
- Compare the original’s date, location, aspect ratio, soundtrack, captions, and surrounding description with the political ad.
- Repeat with two or more frames and with a distinctive spoken phrase or sign text.
The Australian Electoral Commission identifies old or outdated material as a warning sign. A match from an earlier year does not automatically show that the current clip is manipulated; it may be the same genuine event being reused with a new caption. Confirm whether the ad has altered the crop, audio, speed, or sequence.
What metadata and Content Credentials can—and cannot—prove?
When available, provenance records can describe where a file came from and which edits were recorded. The European Commission recommends interoperable approaches that combine metadata, watermarking, and cryptographic provenance. NIST’s 2024 overview treats provenance, labeling, detection, and testing as related but distinct technical approaches.

Google describes SynthID as a watermark for content generated by Google’s AI models and says its video check can report detected portions. That capability is not a universal detector for material made by every generator. Google also recommends visual inspection, reverse image search, and checking original-file metadata.

OpenAI’s provenance guidance, updated October 2026, puts the limitation plainly: “Provenance signals can provide useful information about origin, but they do not guarantee that content is accurate, unedited, legally owned, or presented in the correct context.” Metadata can disappear during editing and conversion, and watermarks may become undetectable after substantial changes.
How should I interpret visual, audio, and editing anomalies?
Visual clues to investigate
- Text on signs or clothing that changes spelling between frames.
- Hands, fingers, teeth, earrings, glasses, or hair that deform or merge.
- Reflections and shadows that do not match the light source or camera movement.
- Background people or objects that repeat in implausible patterns.
- Edges around a face or body that shimmer during movement.
- A camera perspective that changes without a corresponding cut or lens movement.
Audio and timing clues
- Lip movements that do not match consonants or pauses.
- Breathing, room tone, or reverberation that abruptly changes.
- Words with unnatural emphasis, clipped syllables, or identical intonation across sentences.
- Audio that is slightly ahead of or behind the speaker’s mouth.
- Edits that remove a question, response, or surrounding reaction while presenting a new meaning.
These clues are especially vulnerable to ordinary production problems. A low-quality livestream, a translated voice-over, or a deliberate political edit can create the same symptoms. Use them to select frames and passages for source checking, then rely on provenance and independent corroboration.
Are AI detectors, labels, and watermarks reliable enough to decide?
No. The New York Attorney General warns that detection tools are not always accurate, and the reviewed official material does not establish a general accuracy percentage for consumer image or video detectors. A detector’s output is one lead, not an authentication certificate.
Check the method’s scope before interpreting a result. Does it identify outputs from one provider only? Does it analyze the whole file or a short sampled segment? Does it disclose how compression, cropping, dubbing, or screen recording affects results? A “likely AI” result should trigger a search for the original and corroborating evidence; a “likely human” result should not end the inquiry.

Public attitudes also do not make labels complete. Ofcom reported in 2025 that 85% of adults supported online platforms attaching AI labels to content, while 34% had ever seen an AI label. These are survey findings from Ofcom’s 11 July 2025 discussion of attribution measures, not global prevalence or detector-accuracy figures.
How do election laws and disclosure rules affect what a label means?
Disclosure requirements vary by country, state, medium, and election. The Australian Electoral Commission says electoral communications are subject to authorization requirements but does not require campaigners to disclose AI manipulation of images; audio and video communications have distinct rules. That Australian example cannot be generalized to another jurisdiction, and the presence or absence of an AI disclosure does not establish authenticity.
For a specific ad, identify the jurisdiction in which it is distributed and the medium involved, then consult the current election authority and applicable law. A legal disclosure answers whether a campaign followed a rule; it does not establish that the depicted event happened as described.

What should I do when the evidence remains inconclusive?
Use precise language if you must discuss the material: “The source has not been verified,” “The clip appears to reuse older footage,” or “The provenance record is missing.” Do not convert uncertainty into an accusation that a person fabricated the video, and do not present an unverified clip as authentic simply because it supports your preferred candidate.
Keep the original post and your notes for comparison, but avoid boosting it through quote-posts or screenshots. If the material gives voting instructions, report the claim to the relevant election authority or platform while directing people to official information. The Australian Electoral Commission’s advice is concise: “If you’re unsure, ignore it. Don’t share or repost it.”
What are the most common verification mistakes?
- Relying on one frame: A single frame may be AI-generated, edited, or unrelated to the rest of the clip. Use several distinctive frames.
- Confusing first seen with first published: Your feed’s timestamp is not the event’s date or the source’s publication date.
- Assuming a watermark is universal: A provider-specific watermark cannot identify every generator.
- Treating missing metadata as proof of fakery: Social platforms and ordinary conversion routinely remove it.
- Checking only pixels: A genuine video can carry a false caption, dubbed audio, or misleading crop.
- Using a detector as a verdict: Tool limits, transformations, and unknown error rates make corroboration essential.
- Ignoring jurisdiction: Disclosure and voting rules differ by location and format.
What is the safest standard for calling a political ad authentic?
Call the footage authentic only when the source trail, date and location, file or provenance evidence, and independent corroboration point in the same direction. If those elements conflict, describe the conflict and withhold a definitive label. The goal is not to win a detector contest; it is to prevent a misleading political claim from being amplified.
