You usually cannot prove that a message, voice or video was made by AI from its appearance alone. The reliable test is whether the request survives independent verification. Treat unexpected urgency, secrecy, requests for money, passwords, MFA codes, downloads or link clicks as dangerous; inspect the complete sender address or number; then contact the person or organization through a phone number, app or website you already trust. AI can now produce fluent, correctly spelled messages and convincing cloned voices, so grammar and a familiar voice are no longer proof of authenticity.

What makes AI-generated phishing different from older scams?

Generative tools let criminals produce fluent text, translate it, imitate a company’s tone and personalize a message with details gathered from public profiles or stolen data. Voice-cloning systems can turn a short recording into a call or voice note that sounds like a colleague or relative. Image and video tools can place a real person’s face in synthetic footage or alter a genuine photograph.

The objective is still ordinary phishing: persuade you to reveal credentials, approve a payment, transfer cryptocurrency, install malware, open a file or surrender a one-time code. AI changes the quality and scale of the deception, not the basic defensive rule. Evaluate the request and its context, not whether the wording feels human.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center said on December 3, 2024, that synthetic content is not inherently illegal but can facilitate crimes such as fraud and extortion. The FBI also warns that AI-generated content has advanced to the point that it is often difficult to identify. That is why verification, rather than visual confidence, is the decisive control.

Why is perfect grammar no longer evidence that an email is real?

Spelling mistakes and awkward phrasing were once useful clues because many mass-produced scams were written quickly or translated poorly. CISA now cautions that AI can produce perfect grammar and spelling. A polished message can still be a forged invoice, a credential-harvesting link or a carefully written impersonation.

Conversely, a genuine message may contain typos, an unusual style or a hurried sentence. Writing quality is therefore weak evidence in either direction. Give more weight to who is asking, what they want, why they want it now and whether the request fits a process you can confirm independently.

How can I inspect an email or text before clicking?

Use several small checks together. No single oddity proves that a message is AI-generated, but a combination of identity problems, pressure and an unsafe action is enough to stop.

Check the complete sender address, number and reply path

  • Expand the sender details and read the entire address, not just the display name. Spoofing can change one letter, symbol or number in a domain, according to the FBI.
  • Look for look-alike domains, extra words, substituted characters, unexpected country-code endings and a reply-to address that differs from the visible sender.
  • Caller ID and text-message sender names can be forged. A local area code, a familiar contact name or a message that appears in an existing thread is not authentication.
  • For a business request, independently find the organization’s published phone number or website. Do not use contact details supplied in the suspicious message.

Read the request and the surrounding context

CISA and NIST identify urgency, emotional pressure and requests for information or money as central phishing signals. Pause when a message asks you to click a link, download a file, log in, transfer funds or submit sensitive information. Typical pressure phrases include “right now,” “keep this confidential,” “your account will close,” or “do not call me.”

Ask whether the channel is normal. A manager who usually uses a ticketing system but suddenly sends a personal text asking for gift cards deserves verification. A bank that normally sends an in-app alert but sends an unexpected login link deserves the same treatment. A request can be fraudulent even when the sender knows your name, job title, recent purchase or family member’s name.

Inspect links and attachments without opening them

  • On a computer, hover over a link; on a phone, press and hold only if your device shows the destination without opening it. Read the actual domain and path.
  • Be cautious with shortened URLs, misspelled domains, unexpected QR codes and links that use a familiar brand name in a different domain.
  • Do not open an unexpected attachment, enable macros, install an app or sign in through a message. A file can be dangerous even when the email has no obvious spelling errors.
  • If you need the service, open its official app or type a known address yourself instead of following the message link.

Look for a channel change or unusual timing

Attackers often exploit a real event: a scheduled payment, a travel day, a payroll deadline or a family emergency. Compare the message with your calendar and prior correspondence. A new phone number, a newly created email thread, a request outside business hours or an instruction to bypass normal approval is a reason to verify through a separate channel.

How do email, SMS, voice and video scams compare?

Each channel has different clues, but none provides a trustworthy authenticity signal by itself. Use the independent-verification column as the practical response.

Channel How identity can be spoofed Common dangerous request Possible artifacts or inconsistencies Safest independent verification Reporting and recovery
Email Forged display names, look-alike domains, altered reply-to fields and compromised accounts Log in, open an attachment, change payment details, send money or provide a code Domain or address mismatch, shortened URL, unusual thread, mismatched branding or a sudden tone change; polished grammar proves nothing Open the official site or app yourself, or call a known number from your records Use the mail service’s phishing control; tell your security or IT team; change credentials if you interacted and review sessions and forwarding rules
SMS or messaging app Forged sender IDs, caller numbers, recycled accounts and hijacked conversation threads Tap a link, pay an invoice, share an MFA code or move a conversation to a new app Urgency, secrecy, a new number, odd punctuation, an unfamiliar link or a request that bypasses the normal app Call the person using a number already saved, or open the organization’s official app Use the service’s spam/report function; block and delete; secure the account and contact the carrier or provider if takeover is suspected
Voice call or voice note Caller-ID spoofing, cloned voices, compromised voicemail and social-engineering scripts Urgent transfer, gift cards, password reset, remote access or a two-factor code Lag, delays, unnatural pauses, choppy sentences, unusual inflection, voice mismatch or background noise that does not fit End the call and dial a known-correct number; ask a private question only the real person should know Report the fraud to the relevant provider or authority; contact the bank immediately for a payment; change exposed credentials
Video call or video message Face replacement, synthetic presenters, stolen photographs and manipulated live feeds Approve a transaction, reveal a secret, install software or send money Bad lip synchronization, irregular blinking, warped hands or jewelry, unnatural movement, odd lighting or shadows, facial edges that melt into hair or background Disconnect and call back through a trusted number; confirm using a prearranged phrase or private fact Save evidence, report the account or platform, notify the organization being impersonated and secure any affected accounts

Can I spot a deepfake voice?

You can notice clues, but you cannot authenticate a caller by listening carefully enough. The FBI’s guidance lists delays, unnatural pauses, choppy sentences, unusual inflections and background noise that does not match the claimed setting. A cloned voice may also use a familiar phrase while sounding subtly unlike the person’s normal rhythm, breathing or vocabulary.

Audio quality, a poor connection or a speaker’s illness can create similar effects. Treat these observations as prompts to stop, not as a technical verdict. Never provide a two-factor code to anyone over email, SMS/MMS, an encrypted messaging application or a voice call. End an unexpected call and place a new call to a number you already trust.

What visual clues suggest a deepfake video or image?

Face, eyes and mouth

  • Lip movements that do not match the words, a face that changes shape between frames or skin that looks excessively smooth or oddly colored.
  • Too much or too little blinking, eyes that do not track naturally, eyebrows or hair that merge into the background, and irregular facial edges.
  • Glasses, earrings or other jewelry that warp, disappear or reflect light inconsistently.

Hands, body, lighting and background

  • Distorted hands or feet, extra or missing fingers, and awkward head, shoulder or body positioning.
  • Shadows, colors and highlights that do not agree with the room; an inaccurate shadow under the face; or a boundary between hair and background that looks melted.
  • Unnatural movement, a frozen background, mismatched perspective or a watermark that appears to float or change.

HHS and the FBI describe these as possible indicators, not proof. Compression, low light, camera autofocus and video-conferencing lag can produce similar artifacts, while newer synthetic media may avoid obvious defects. If the request has financial or security consequences, verify the person by another channel even when the video looks flawless.

  1. Stop. Do not click, reply, download, pay, install software or disclose a password or MFA code while you assess the request.
  2. Inspect. Read the full sender address or number, destination domain, timing, requested action and whether the channel is new or unusual.
  3. Verify independently. Open the official app, type the known website yourself or call a trusted number already in your contacts. Never use a phone number, link or address supplied by the suspicious communication.
  4. Use a private challenge when appropriate. Ask a colleague or relative a question only the real person should know. For family, agree on a secret word or phrase in advance; do not choose an answer that an attacker could find on social media.
  5. Report it. Use the email, messaging or social platform’s spam or phishing control. For a workplace message, send it to the security or IT team using the organization’s normal process. For financial loss or attempted fraud, contact the bank and the appropriate government reporting service.
  6. Delete it after preserving what is needed. Keep screenshots, headers, phone numbers or transaction details for a report, then remove the message and block the sender.
  7. Strengthen account protection. Turn on multi-factor authentication. A FIDO2/WebAuthn security key is an optional physical method that resists many phishing pages. Treat every MFA prompt or code as private; approving an unexpected prompt can give an attacker access.

How should I verify a message that appears to come from my boss?

Do not approve a payment, payroll change, gift-card purchase or confidential disclosure from the message alone. Call your manager using the number in the company directory, start a new conversation in the organization’s established collaboration system or confirm through a known in-person contact. Follow the normal two-person approval or purchase workflow even if the request claims to bypass it for an emergency.

A request to keep the conversation secret is especially important: secrecy prevents coworkers from noticing the impersonation. Tell the manager that you are verifying through the standard process; a legitimate manager should accept that control.

How should I check a message that appears to come from my bank or a government service?

Do not sign in through an email or text link. Type the institution’s known web address, use its official app or call the number printed on a statement or card. Login.gov advises checking sender details, treating threats and requests for Social Security or banking information as warning signs, and signing in through the official site rather than a message link.

If the message claims that an account is locked, the independent app or website will show the same notice if it is real. A genuine support representative will not need your password or one-time code. If you entered credentials on a suspicious page, change the password from the real site, sign out other sessions and contact the institution’s fraud department.

What should I do if I already clicked or replied?

Act quickly, but do not continue the conversation with the sender.

  • If you entered a password, change it immediately from the legitimate site. Change it anywhere else you reused it, and review active sessions, recovery addresses, forwarding rules and newly added MFA devices.
  • If you exposed an MFA code or approved a prompt, contact the account provider’s security team, revoke unknown sessions and reset authentication methods. Tell the provider exactly what was disclosed.
  • If you downloaded or opened a file, disconnect the device from the network if your security team advises it, run the device’s trusted security scan and report the incident before deleting evidence.
  • If you sent money or changed bank details, call the bank’s fraud number immediately and ask whether the transfer can be stopped or recalled. Notify the intended recipient through a separate channel.
  • If personal or identity information was disclosed, monitor accounts, place alerts or freezes where available and follow the affected institution’s identity-theft procedure.

Save the original message, full headers, URLs, phone numbers, timestamps and payment records. Those details help the provider or investigators distinguish a compromised account from a one-off spoof.

How can organizations reduce AI-assisted impersonation?

Technology that flags suspicious language can support triage, but it should not be the sole gatekeeper. Set procedures that require independent confirmation for payment changes, new beneficiaries, password resets, sensitive data transfers and urgent executive requests. Make the approved verification channel visible in the company directory and train staff to use it.

Mail authentication, attachment scanning, link protection, least-privilege access and strong MFA reduce the impact of a successful lure. Simulated exercises should teach employees to report near misses without punishment, because rapid reporting can stop a second victim. Review whether help-desk staff can be pressured into resetting an account based only on a convincing voice or video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For high-risk teams, establish an out-of-band callback rule and a shared phrase or transaction reference that an attacker cannot learn from the original message. Document who can authorize an exception and require a second approver. These controls remain useful whether the deception was written by a person, generated by software or produced by a compromised account.

What is the most dependable way to judge authenticity?

Use a two-part test: identify the consequence of complying, then verify the request through a channel the message cannot control. If the consequence involves money, credentials, personal data, software installation or an MFA code, do not rely on appearance, caller ID, a familiar writing style or a convincing face. Independent contact with the real person or institution is stronger evidence than any artifact detector.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI-content detector tell me whether a phishing email is real?

No detector can establish that a message is safe or unsafe with certainty. Detection tools may flag unusual wording or generated media, but they can miss new techniques and falsely flag genuine writing. Use them, if at all, as a secondary signal after checking the request and verifying the sender independently.

What if the caller knows details that only my family or coworkers should know?

Assume those details may have come from social media, a data breach, a hacked mailbox or an overheard conversation. Do not treat knowledge of a pet’s name, a recent trip or an invoice amount as identity proof. End the interaction and use a number or account you obtained separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I forward a suspicious email to my security team?

Follow your organization’s established reporting method; some teams want the original message or full headers, while others provide a reporting button that preserves them automatically. Do not forward it to coworkers or friends for informal review, because a link or attachment could be opened accidentally.

How can a family set up a secret phrase for emergencies?

Choose a phrase in person, record it in a secure password manager or another protected place, and agree that anyone who cannot provide it must be called back on a known number. Change it if someone outside the family learns it. Never send the phrase in response to the suspicious call or message.

Are deepfake clues useful when a video looks nearly perfect?

They can justify a pause, but a lack of visible artifacts does not authenticate the speaker. Camera quality, compression and lighting can hide flaws, and improved generation tools may produce fewer errors. For a consequential request, the callback or second-channel check is still necessary.
