Use several checks together: inspect the post and account, examine the image or video for visual and motion inconsistencies, look for platform labels or Content Credentials, check the original file’s metadata when available, and search for earlier copies. No single clue or detector can prove that a post is real or AI-generated. In particular, no label, watermark, or metadata signal is not proof either way.
How can I tell if a social media picture or video is AI-generated?
Treat identification as a verification process, not a spot-the-glitch quiz. Start with what the post claims, then examine the media and any available provenance signals, and finally compare it with independent sources. A strange-looking hand may be a warning sign; a plausible-looking image may still be synthetic. Neither appearance alone establishes what happened.
Keep two questions separate throughout: How was this file made or edited? and Is the event or claim shown in it true? Provenance tools can offer information about a file’s origin and edit history. They do not independently verify the real-world event depicted, and an image can be authentic while its caption is misleading.

A practical order of checks
- Read the post: note its claim, caption, date, location, and the account publishing it.
- Inspect the image or multiple video frames at full resolution for inconsistencies.
- Open any AI label or Content Credentials indicator and note exactly what it reports.
- If you have the original file, inspect its provenance and metadata rather than relying on a screenshot.
- Run a reverse image search to look for earlier copies, similar images, or an original source.
- Look for independent corroboration of the event, especially when the post makes a consequential or sensational claim.
Each check answers a different question. Combining them is more useful than treating any one result as a verdict.

What should I check in the post and account first?
Before zooming in on pixels, check whether the post’s context holds together. An account’s history, the caption, the date and location, and independent reporting or eyewitness accounts can help establish whether the claim deserves more scrutiny.
Read the claim, not just the image
Write down what the post says the media depicts. Does the caption name a specific place, date, person, or event? Is it presented as breaking news, an old photograph, satire, or an illustration? A genuine photo from another time or place can be paired with a false caption, so finding a real-looking file does not settle whether the post’s claim is accurate.
Assess the account and corroboration
Consider whether the account has a consistent history and whether its posts can be checked against other credible sources. Look for independent coverage or firsthand accounts that match the specific details in the caption, not merely other posts repeating the same claim. A new or sensational account can raise the verification burden, but it does not prove that the media is synthetic.
Meta President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg has advised people to consider whether the sharing account is trustworthy and whether details look or sound unnatural. Those are useful prompts, not a substitute for corroboration: trustworthy accounts can make mistakes, and convincing media can appear on suspicious accounts.
What visual clues should I look for in an AI-generated image?
Inspect the full image for details that do not fit together: lettering that is garbled, small features that are malformed, lighting or shadows that conflict, and repetitive patterns. These are warning signs, not a reliable checklist in which one flaw proves AI generation.
Check text and small details
- Lettering: Look at signs, labels, book covers, or other text. Inconsistent or garbled text can be a clue, especially if the caption depends on the text being legible.
- Hands, teeth, and background elements: Examine small features closely. Google identifies errors in hands, teeth, or background elements as possible clues, but a visible oddity does not by itself establish how an image was made.
- Jewelry and object boundaries: Check whether an object’s edges, attachment points, and relationship to nearby objects remain coherent. Look for details that appear to merge, disappear, or change without a plausible reason.
- Reflections and perspective: Compare reflections with the objects and light sources they should represent. Check whether lines, scale, and viewpoint make sense across the scene.
Compare light, shadows, and repeated textures
Ask whether the apparent light source matches the brightness and direction of shadows across the scene. Look for surfaces or background patterns that repeat in a way that seems unnatural, or for details that are oddly inconsistent with nearby objects. Google also lists inconsistent shadows and lighting and repetitive patterns among possible indicators.

Do not assume that every unusual detail is synthetic. Real photographs can contain motion blur, lens distortion, low-resolution artifacts, reflections that are difficult to interpret, and ordinary mistakes. Conversely, an image without obvious errors is not thereby proven authentic.

How do I spot a deepfake video?
Check both individual frames and changes across time. Pause at several points to inspect details, then watch how faces, objects, lighting, and movement behave from one moment to the next. Listen as well as look: unnatural speech timing or mouth movement that does not match the audio can be a warning sign, but neither is conclusive on its own.
Inspect more than one frame
A single paused frame can hide or exaggerate an artifact. Check several moments, including when a person turns, speaks, moves a hand, or passes behind another object. Watch for abrupt changes in facial features or other details between frames, and for objects or backgrounds that appear to shift without a plausible movement or camera change.
Pay attention to continuity rather than demanding visual perfection. Real video can contain compression, dropped frames, poor lighting, and noisy audio. An artifact may result from recording or editing rather than AI generation; the key question is whether the whole clip and its context support the claim being made.
Listen for timing and correspondence
Notice whether the mouth movements and speech seem to align, whether the timing sounds natural, and whether the audio fits the visible scene. These observations can flag a clip for further checking. They cannot establish who created it, whether it has been edited, or whether the spoken claim is true.
What do AI labels and Content Credentials tell me?
A label or credential can provide useful information about a file or a platform’s assessment, but its meaning depends on the signal and the platform’s coverage. Content Credentials, often associated with the C2PA standard, can record information about origin, tools, and edits. They can apply to both AI-generated and non-AI media; they are not a universal real-or-fake stamp.

The Content Authenticity Initiative says Content Credentials provide information about a piece of content’s origin and history but are not intended to prescribe whether it is “real.” In practice, read the details shown by a credential rather than treating the presence of an icon as a verdict. A credential may help answer how a file was made or changed without answering whether its caption accurately describes an event.
Platform labels have limited coverage
Meta and LinkedIn describe AI labeling and disclosure systems, but their coverage is not complete. Labels may depend on a recognized signal or a user disclosure, and systems and rollout can vary. A label is relevant evidence to examine; the absence of one does not show that the media is human-made.
LinkedIn says its C2PA icon can expose assertions about AI use, the app or device, creator, issuer, and issue date. Those are assertions attached to the media, not independent proof that the person, device, or event is authentic. Check what information is actually displayed and consider it alongside other evidence.
How the main technical signals differ
| Signal | What it can tell you | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Content Credentials / C2PA | Signed provenance information may record origin, tools, and edit history. | It is not a truth verdict, does not apply only to AI media, and may be absent from files that have lost or never carried the information. |
| Invisible watermark | A model-specific signal may indicate generation or editing by a system that embeds it. | It is not universal across generators and may not be detectable in every copy or transformation. |
| Platform label | A platform may indicate a recognized signal or a user disclosure. | Coverage varies; no label does not mean no AI was used. |
| Automated classifier or API | A detector can help triage media for closer review. | It cannot identify every synthetic file or determine whether the depicted claim is true. |
Can reverse image search prove an image is AI?
No. Reverse image search can help find an earlier copy, a similar image, or a possible original source, but a search that finds nothing does not prove AI generation. Search results are leads to compare, not a final authenticity judgment.
How to compare search results
- Search the image or a useful crop, then try a different crop if the first search returns little.
- Compare the results with the post: note dates, captions, locations, visible edits, and cropping.
- Open promising results and assess whether the source is credible and actually supports the post’s claim.
- Look for the earliest credible appearance you can identify, while remembering that the earliest result you find may not be the original.
An earlier match can reveal that a photo has been recaptioned or reused, which is important even if the file itself is a real photograph. A similar image is not necessarily the same image, and a search engine’s failure to locate a match is not evidence that a file was generated by AI.
How can I check the original file’s metadata and provenance?
If you have the original image or video file, inspect its available metadata and any Content Credentials. If all you have is a screenshot or a social-media copy, recognize that conversion, cropping, compression, and metadata removal may have stripped information. A missing record in that copy cannot settle the question.

Check provenance when present
The C2PA Viewer is described by ORI as a free, open-source viewer for inspecting signed origin and edit history. Use it to see what provenance information the file actually contains. A viewer can display available claims; it cannot make a file carry a credential it never had or turn a provenance record into proof that the pictured event occurred.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReview EXIF fields on an original photo
Where available, EXIF fields may include camera, date, and software information. These fields can help you understand the file’s recorded history, but they are not a standalone authenticity test. Social platforms commonly transform uploaded media, and screenshots or re-encoded downloads may not preserve the original EXIF data.
Microsoft’s technical documentation cautions that a result indicating no provenance information was detected does not necessarily mean the content was not AI-generated. The same practical caution applies when metadata is missing: first consider whether you are examining the original file and whether the file type and source support the signal you are trying to inspect.
When is Gemini or SynthID useful?
Gemini can check Google SynthID and Content Credentials for supported files. A positive SynthID result indicates Google AI generation or editing; a negative result means only that Google AI was not detected. It does not rule out generation or editing with another system.
This is a model-specific check, so use it as one input rather than a general-purpose detector. If the file is unsupported, transformed, or lacks a detectable signal, the result may not answer the broader question of whether any AI tool was involved. Continue with contextual checks and source corroboration.
Why can’t an AI detector give a definitive answer?
Automated detectors can help prioritize content for review, but they do not cover every generator or every file. Microsoft says provenance detection does not determine truth or falsity and does not identify all AI-generated content. A detector result should therefore be read as a limited signal about a system’s coverage, not a finding about the truth of the post.

False confidence can come from either direction: assuming a positive signal settles the real-world claim, or assuming a negative signal proves a file is genuine. Signals differ by provider, supported media, and the transformations a file has undergone. Screenshots, cropping, compression, and unsupported generators can all contribute to a no-signal result.
What should I conclude when the checks disagree?
Do not force conflicting clues into a binary verdict. Record what each check actually establishes, then separate the file’s likely production history from the truth of the post’s claim. If the evidence does not resolve either question, say that it remains unverified rather than calling it real or fake.
- A credential reports AI use, but the event is corroborated: The media may be AI-generated or edited while still illustrating a true event; check what the credential says and how the image is being presented.
- No label appears, but the image has visual anomalies: Treat the anomalies as reasons to investigate, not as proof. Check the source and seek an earlier copy or independent corroboration.
- A detector finds no signal, but the caption is unsupported: The detector result does not verify the caption. Keep the event claim unconfirmed unless reliable independent evidence supports it.
- Metadata is missing from a social-media download: Consider whether the file is a screenshot or re-encoded copy before drawing conclusions from absent fields.
The most defensible conclusion is often narrow: for example, that a file contains a particular provenance assertion, that an earlier version appeared elsewhere, or that the event has not been independently corroborated. State the evidence you have, not a broader claim it cannot support.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What is the safest way to evaluate a suspicious post?
Use the following evidence ladder before treating a post as established fact:
- Claim: Identify exactly what the caption asserts and what details would need confirmation.
- Context: Assess the account, date, location, and whether independent sources corroborate those details.
- Media: Inspect multiple image details or video frames for inconsistencies, while treating artifacts as clues only.
- Provenance: Read any label, credential, watermark result, or original-file metadata for its actual scope.
- Cross-check: Search for earlier copies and compare the source, timing, and caption.
This method prevents two common mistakes: calling a file authentic because a detector found nothing, and calling it fake because it looks unusual or lacks a label. The goal is not to guess the generator from one visual flaw. It is to establish, as carefully as the available evidence allows, what the file’s history suggests and whether the post’s claim is independently supported.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI-generated image show a real event?
Yes. A generated or edited image can be used to illustrate an event that happened, even though it is not a documentary photograph of that event. Verify the event independently and distinguish an illustration from evidence captured at the scene.
Does a C2PA icon mean a photo is authentic?
No. The icon can expose provenance assertions about a file, but those assertions do not by themselves prove the identity of a creator or the truth of the pictured event. Read the details attached to the credential.
Can a screenshot be checked for the original image’s history?
Sometimes a reverse image search can locate an earlier copy, but a screenshot may no longer contain the original file’s metadata or signed provenance. If possible, find and inspect the earliest available source file instead.
Should I share a post while I’m still checking it?
Avoid presenting an unverified claim as established fact. If you discuss it, describe what is known and what remains uncertain, and do not imply that a visual oddity or detector result settles the question.
