There is no reliable one-click test that proves a post was made by AI or that its claims are true. Check those as two separate questions: inspect the original file or earliest post for labels and preserved provenance, then verify important claims against independent evidence. Detector scores, realistic details, watermarks, and missing metadata are clues—not proof.
What are you actually trying to determine?
“Was AI involved?” and “Is this claim true?” are different investigations. A file can have credible origin information and still contain a false caption. Conversely, a truthful report may lose its metadata during editing or reposting. Keep the two questions separate so a technical signal does not become a substitute for fact-checking.
Question 1: Was AI used?
Look for a publisher disclosure, platform label, Content Credentials or other signed provenance, and provider-specific watermark or detection signals. These can identify an origin, an editing history, or a system’s own supported signal. They cannot establish that every visible element was generated by AI, nor can a missing signal prove that a human made the content.

Question 2: Is the claim true in context?
Check the assertion itself: who or what is shown, when and where it happened, what the speaker actually said, and whether the caption omits material context. Use primary records and credible independent corroboration for consequential claims. Provenance describes origin and history; it does not fact-check the caption.

How should I start with an image, video, audio clip, or text post?
Begin with the highest-quality, earliest version you can find. A screenshot, screen recording, compressed repost, or copied paragraph may have already removed the signals needed for analysis.
- Save the original. Download the file from the first identifiable source when possible. Preserve the filename, upload date, account, accompanying text, and the URL or platform location in your notes.
- Find the earliest post. Compare timestamps, captions, and edits. An account that uploaded a file later may not be its creator.
- Read the disclosure. Check for an AI-generated, altered, synthetic-media, or edited-content label. Record exactly who applied it: the creator, a platform, a newsroom, or another publisher.
- Inspect supported provenance. Use a Content Credentials or provenance viewer that explicitly supports the file type and signal you have. Record whether a credential is present, which issuer signed it, the creation or edit events it reports, and whether the signature validates.
- Check provider-specific signals. A watermark or detector can only answer what that provider’s system supports. Note the system and version or mode if shown; do not generalize its result to every AI generator.
- Verify the claim independently. Search for original documents, official statements, public records, full-length footage, or reporting from independent organizations. Match the date, location, people, and wording before drawing a conclusion.
If the original cannot be obtained, say so in your assessment. “No provenance found in this copy” is precise; “authentic” or “human-made” is not justified by that absence.
What can Content Credentials and C2PA provenance tell me?
Content Credentials based on the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) can provide cryptographically signed evidence about a file’s origin and recorded edits when the credential is present, valid, and still attached to the media. They are provenance records, not truth certificates.
“Provenance information alone cannot tell you whether the digital content is true, accurate or factual.” — Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), C2PA and Content Credentials Explainer, section 7.2.2.
What a valid credential may establish
- An identified issuer signed a creation or editing event.
- The file has a recorded chain of actions, such as capture, compositing, or export.
- The credential has not been altered since signing, subject to the viewer’s validation result.
What it cannot establish
- That the depicted event really happened.
- That a statement in the caption is accurate or complete.
- That an unlisted editor, camera, or AI system was not involved.
- That the person or organization named as issuer is trustworthy merely because a signature validates.
Always record the issuer and the exact events shown. A valid chain from a camera or editing application is useful evidence about handling, but it still requires context and claim verification.

Why can provenance, labels, and watermarks disappear?
Normal sharing workflows can strip or break attribution signals. Screenshots, screen recordings, resizing, format conversion, re-encoding, editing, and some social-platform uploads may remove metadata or invalidate a signature. A watermark may be cropped, blurred, or lost when only a frame or audio segment is copied.
The Office of Research Integrity cautions that missing credentials or watermarks do not prove authenticity. Treat a missing signal as an evidence gap, not as evidence that a person made the content. If a repost is all you have, ask for the original file or a direct link to the earliest source before making a strong judgment.

Can an AI detector prove that text, images, or audio were AI-generated?
No. A detector reports whether its own method found a supported signal or pattern; it does not provide universal authorship proof. Results should be treated as one clue alongside provenance, disclosure, source history, and independent review.
Provider-specific detection
OpenAI’s provenance checks look for supported OpenAI signals in supported media. They are not a general-purpose detector for every AI system. A “not detected” result means only that the supported signal was not found; it does not rule out generation by OpenAI or by another provider. Microsoft describes a similar limitation for its provenance detector, which is restricted to supported Microsoft signals.
Text detectors
Text-detector percentages are especially easy to overread. Rewriting, translation, short samples, non-native writing, and ordinary editing can change the output, while generated text may avoid a detector’s supported patterns. Do not use a score alone to accuse a student, employee, journalist, or applicant. In a high-stakes decision, preserve the source material, involve a qualified human reviewer, and seek corroborating evidence such as drafts, publication records, or an attributable author.

Image, video, and voice analysis
Visual or audio oddities can prompt closer review, but there is no validated universal checklist of telltale artifacts established here. Unusual hands, lip movement, lighting, reflections, shadows, cadence, or background details may result from compression, lens effects, editing, performance, or an actual recording. Describe them as possible warning signs, not forensic findings.

The approaches below are complementary rather than interchangeable. Choose based on the file type, the signal’s coverage, and whether you need origin evidence or factual corroboration.
| Method | What it can establish | Coverage and survival | Can it verify the claim? |
|---|---|---|---|
| C2PA Content Credentials or other provenance metadata | Signed origin and recorded edit history when present and valid; may identify an issuer. | Depends on the creator, application, and viewer supporting the format. Screenshots, conversion, editing, and reposting can remove or invalidate it. | No. C2PA says provenance alone cannot establish that content is true, accurate, or factual. |
| Embedded or provider watermark | A supported signal associated with a particular provider or generation system. | Coverage depends on that provider and implementation. Some changes may preserve it; others may remove or obscure it. | No. A negative result is not universal evidence that AI was not used. |
| AI label or context annotation | How a platform or publisher classifies or contextualizes the content. | Visible only where the publisher or platform adds and preserves it; labels may not follow copied media. | No. A label is attribution or context, not fact-checking. |
| Independent claim verification | Whether a material assertion matches primary records and credible corroboration for the relevant date, place, people, and wording. | Works across media types but requires enough identifying detail and reliable sources. | It is the only method in this comparison aimed directly at factual accuracy, and it remains necessary when provenance is intact. |
How do I verify a consequential claim in a viral post?
Use a source-first workflow. The more a claim could affect health, safety, elections, finances, employment, or reputation, the more independent confirmation you should require.
- Extract the exact assertion. Rewrite the post as a checkable sentence. Separate what is visibly shown from what the caption alleges.
- Identify the entities. Note names, titles, organizations, locations, dates, quoted words, and any number or statistic. Ambiguous terms often produce misleading search results.
- Search for primary evidence. Look for an official record, court filing, government data, full speech or interview, original scientific paper, direct statement, or complete unedited footage. Prefer the document or recording that made the fact available, not a summary that repeats the post.
- Check time and place. Confirm that the source refers to the same event and date. Old footage and genuine images are frequently paired with new or unrelated claims.
- Seek independent corroboration. Compare at least one credible source that is not simply copying the same account. Disagreement should be explained, not averaged away.
- Inspect missing context. Read the surrounding paragraph, watch the full clip, check whether a quote was truncated, and look for corrections or later developments.
- Write a bounded conclusion. Use categories such as supported, contradicted, misleading, unverified, or impossible to determine. State which part is established and which part remains unknown.
Do not let a polished image, a convincing voice, an AI label, or a detector score replace this process. A post can be AI-generated and factually correct, human-made and false, or a mixture of authentic and synthetic elements.
How should I assess a label or context annotation?
A label tells you something about the labeling organization’s classification decision, not necessarily about the underlying event. Read who issued it, what category it covers, and whether it refers to the entire item or only a portion such as an audio track or edited background.

Ofcom’s discussion of attribution measures distinguishes watermarking, provenance metadata, AI labels, and context annotations. They address different points in the chain: a watermark can signal a system, provenance can document handling, and a context note can explain how a publisher interprets the item. None independently confirms the caption’s truth.
In Ofcom’s 2025 reporting, 85% of adults supported online platforms attaching AI labels to content, while 34% said they had ever seen an AI label. Ofcom reports these figures on its 2025 page; the available report does not provide the underlying survey methods or sample details here, so do not treat the percentages as representative of every country or as a measure of current attitudes everywhere.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What transparency rules apply in the European Union?
The European Commission says the EU AI Act’s Article 50 transparency obligations apply from 2 August 2026. The duties include provider measures to inform users and add machine-readable marks for AI-generated or manipulated content, plus deployer disclosures in specified cases involving deepfakes and certain AI-generated public-interest text published without human review or editorial control.
Application depends on the AI Act’s scope, the role of the provider or deployer, the type of content, and applicable exceptions. This is a compliance summary, not legal advice. A platform’s failure to show a label does not by itself prove that content is human-made, and a label does not prove that its accompanying claims are true.

What should I record when documenting a finding?
Good notes make your conclusion reproducible and prevent a detector result from being detached from its limitations.
- Original file or earliest post, including date, account, and platform location.
- Hash or preserved copy of the file when your workflow supports it.
- Exact label text and who displayed it.
- Provenance viewer used, supported signal, validation status, issuer, and listed edits.
- Detector name, supported provider or signal, result, and date checked.
- Primary sources and independent corroboration, with the specific passage, timestamp, or record that supports your conclusion.
- Uncertainties caused by compression, missing originals, ambiguous dates, or unavailable records.
For high-stakes work, have a second reviewer repeat the checks from the preserved material. Automated decisions should be paired with human review, particularly when an accusation could affect a person’s rights, livelihood, or safety.
What are the most common mistakes?
- Treating “not detected” as “human-made.” It only means that a particular supported signal was not found.
- Treating a valid signature as a truth seal. Provenance can document origin and edits without validating the event or caption.
- Analyzing a screenshot as though it were the original. The screenshot may have discarded the metadata and altered visual or audio evidence.
- Using a visual-artifact checklist as a verdict. Compression, lighting, editing, and genuine camera behavior can create similar irregularities.
- Confusing a platform label with an independent investigation. Labels describe classification or context, not whether a claim is accurate.
- Checking only one source. A copied article or repost is not independent corroboration.
- Ignoring dates and locations. Authentic media can be miscaptioned years or continents away from its original context.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an image be authentic if it has no Content Credentials?
Yes, but the absence of credentials does not establish that it is authentic or human-made. Credentials may never have been created, or they may have been removed by a screenshot, conversion, edit, or repost; request the original and check independent context.
Should I trust an AI-generated-content percentage from a detector?
Treat it as a probabilistic clue limited to that detector’s training and supported content. It is not sufficient evidence for an accusation or disciplinary decision without source history and human review.
Does an AI label mean the information in a post is false?
No. A label generally describes how a platform or publisher classifies the media’s creation or editing. Verify the underlying statement separately against primary evidence and independent corroboration.
What should I do when primary sources disagree?
Compare their publication times, evidentiary basis, definitions, and corrections rather than choosing the majority automatically. Report the specific disagreement and what remains unresolved instead of presenting a stronger conclusion than the records support.
