You usually cannot prove that a fan-made game port used AI by looking at an asset. A fair assessment combines the original file, any verifiable provenance, disclosures and production records, and visual clues; even then, the result may be inconclusive. Treat detection as evidence gathering, not a verdict based on a screenshot or a detector score.
What can you actually establish about an asset?
Separate three questions that are easy to conflate: whether a tool was involved, which part of a project it affected, and whether the evidence is strong enough to support a claim. A texture might have been generated, edited with AI, or simply passed through a tool that added a provenance signal. None of those facts alone establishes who made the asset, who owns it, or whether a creator violated a rule.
It also matters what “asset” means in the port. A release may include textures, 3D models, voices, code, translations, promotional images, or artwork on its project page. Evidence about one file does not establish that the entire port was made with AI. Keep findings tied to the exact file and component they concern.

These labels are more useful than an unsupported yes-or-no claim. They make clear what the evidence can carry, and where it stops.

How should you preserve an asset before checking it?
Start with the best available original, not a reposted screenshot. Keep an untouched copy and record where it came from, when you obtained it, and what has happened to it since. OpenAI’s guidance on watermark signals and Google’s guidance on identifying manipulated media both make the practical limitation clear: transformations such as compression, cropping, screenshots, and format conversion may remove metadata or weaken signals.
- Find the original source. Prefer the asset bundled with the port or an original export shared by its creator. Record the exact page, repository, or archive where you found it and the retrieval date.
- Make a read-only copy. Do not overwrite or resave the only copy. Work on a duplicate if you need to inspect, convert, or annotate the file.
- Record basic file facts. Note the filename, dimensions, format, and any available file metadata. These details identify what you examined; they do not prove authorship.
- Log transformations. Record whether you resized, cropped, compressed, converted, extracted, or captured the asset as a screenshot. Keep any earlier version you can obtain alongside the transformed copy.
- Keep findings attached to the file. If a claim concerns a specific texture or model, preserve the precise version and identify it in your notes. Do not silently generalize from that file to unrelated components.
A screenshot can still be useful for locating an asset or documenting how it appeared in a game, but it is a weak substitute for the original when checking provenance. If only a transformed copy is available, note that limitation rather than treating missing signals as evidence against the creator.
Can Content Credentials prove a texture was AI-generated?
They can provide stronger provenance evidence than ordinary file metadata when the creation workflow supports them and the credential’s signature and issuer validate. They authenticate the claims recorded in the manifest; they do not independently prove that every pixel or polygon was AI-generated.
Content Credentials can record information such as creator, generation tool, edit history, and timestamps. Check that the credential is present and that its signature and issuer validate. Then read the recorded claims narrowly: a manifest may describe a tool’s involvement or an edit without saying that the whole asset originated from AI.

A valid credential is not a ruling on ownership, permission, or policy compliance. It authenticates the recorded information, not every unrecorded event in an asset’s history. Conversely, if there is no credential, that absence does not show that AI was not used: the workflow may not have created one, or a later transformation may have stripped it.
Is there a detector for AI game assets?
There is no universal detector that can reliably settle authorship across generators, asset types, file formats, and editing histories. A watermark check is useful only for signals supported by the system doing the check, and its result must be interpreted within that scope.
OpenAI says its tools are designed for supported OpenAI signals and may miss files from unsupported products, models, formats, or older exports. A detected mark indicates that the supported system likely generated or processed the content; it does not say how much AI contributed. A “not detected” result means only that the check did not find a supported signal. OpenAI’s developer guidance explicitly cautions that not_detected is an absence of detected evidence, not proof that content is human-created or was not generated with OpenAI.

Do not treat a detector result as a standalone accusation or try to convert its output into a certainty it does not provide. Record which check was used, which file it examined, and whether the tool supports the suspected generator and file type. If those limits are unclear, the result has little value beyond prompting further investigation.

What do mod-page disclosures and host tags tell you?
They tell you what a creator or platform has disclosed or categorized; they are not forensic reconstructions of every asset’s history. Read the actual disclosure and identify its scope before drawing a conclusion about the project.
Read the disclosure at component level
Check the port or mod page, credits, changelog, repository, and relevant host policy. Look for which component is named—such as a texture, model, voice, code, translation, or page image—and whether the disclosure describes AI generation, assistance, or a feature that depends on AI. A statement about one asset should not be expanded to the whole release.
Modrinth says creators are expected to be honest about generative AI use under section 6.1 of its Content Rules. Its disclosure requirements cover substantial AI-produced code or assets, AI-dependent design or functionality, and AI-generated project-page elements. A disclosure can therefore be relevant even when it concerns the project page rather than an in-game asset. It remains a transparency requirement, not proof that a particular untagged file was generated by AI.

Nexus Mods distinguishes the categories “AI-Generated Content,” “AI Media,” and “AI Assisted.” Its AI Assisted category calls for development history, version-control evidence, and demonstrated expertise. A tag records a platform-facing policy claim; it does not reveal the full history of every included asset. Likewise, a missing tag is not by itself proof that a creator used no AI—or that a disclosure rule was violated. Check the relevant host’s policy and the project’s actual disclosures rather than assuming every platform uses the same definitions.

Which visual clues justify a closer look?
Visual anomalies can help you decide what to investigate, but they cannot identify authorship on their own. Google recommends pairing visual clues with reverse-image search and metadata analysis rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Garbled lettering: text that looks almost readable can merit comparison with other versions of the asset. It can also result from low resolution, compression, scaling, or intentional stylization.
- Inconsistent small details: a detail that changes unexpectedly across nearby surfaces or repeated objects may warrant inspection at native resolution. Art direction, texture filtering, and reuse can also create odd-looking details.
- Conflicting shadows or lighting: mismatched light direction may be a clue to examine how the asset was assembled. It is not specific to AI and may reflect a composite, an in-game lighting effect, or a manual edit.
- Unnatural repeated motifs: repeated patterns that do not fit the rest of the asset can prompt a closer comparison with production files or other releases. Repetition alone does not establish how the pattern was made.
Inspect the asset at its native resolution when possible, and compare it with other files from the same project. Use reverse-image search to look for earlier or matching versions, but treat a match as context: it may identify a source or reuse without explaining whether AI was involved. Avoid interpreting a single visual oddity as a signature of a particular generator.

Production evidence can make a creator’s account more or less coherent, but it is corroboration rather than an automatic guarantee. Look for records that fit the asset’s role and can be compared with the released file.
- Layered source files: layers may show how an image was assembled, though they do not alone establish the origin of every layer.
- UV layouts, topology, and texture atlases: these can connect a 3D asset to its production process and to the file used in the port.
- Revision history and work-in-progress exports: a sequence of dated revisions can help explain how a final asset developed. Consider whether the revisions correspond to the released version.
- In-game variants: comparison with variants used in different scenes or builds can help establish which component is under discussion and how it changed.
- Consistent credits: credits and release notes can be checked against repository history and other project records. Consistency is useful; it is not an independent authenticity guarantee.
For a comparison between two assets or ports, use the same questions for each: Is provenance available, and does its signature validate? Is the disclosure specific and consistent? How much production history is available? What transformations occurred? Are the visual anomalies present at native resolution? Are there reverse-search matches? Could an independent reviewer reproduce the assessment? This keeps the comparison focused on evidence rather than impressions.

How should you report a suspected AI-generated asset?
Describe the evidence and its limits, identify the exact component, and avoid claiming more than you can substantiate. If the claim could harm a creator, preserve the files and seek qualified human review before presenting an inference as fact.
- Identify the object of the claim. Name the specific file or project component and version, rather than saying the entire port is AI-generated.
- Separate direct records from clues. Distinguish a validated provenance claim or explicit disclosure from a visual anomaly, an unsupported detector result, or a missing record.
- Explain scope and transformations. State whether you examined an original or a transformed copy and list any relevant format changes, cropping, compression, or screenshot capture.
- State what remains unknown. If the available evidence does not establish tool involvement, say “inconclusive.” If it documents a tool’s involvement but not its contribution to every element, say that too.
- Invite review when consequences are serious. Preserve the source material and give a qualified reviewer enough context to reproduce the assessment.
There is no authoritative prevalence figure for AI-generated assets in fan-made game ports in the cited guidance. A count or percentage should not be inferred from a few examples, platform tags, or detector results.

Can I prove this texture was AI-generated from a screenshot?
Usually not. A screenshot may have been resized, compressed, or stripped of metadata, so it can obscure the signals needed for a provenance check. Look for the original file and its documented history before making a claim.
What does a missing AI watermark mean?
It means the check did not find a supported watermark in the file it examined. It does not establish that a person made the asset without AI, especially if the generator, format, or export is unsupported.
