You can gain meaningful cloud-engineering practice without first being hired by running a structured role simulation: act as the junior engineer, receive ambiguous business tickets, research and implement the solution independently, document your decisions, escalate only after a timebox, and submit the result to a code review. This approach adds the operational habits that certification labs rarely require.
Brian Meinert describes this model as an ongoing interactive simulation in which an AI system serves as Lead Cloud Architect and Project Manager. The method is not a claim of production experience or a substitute for employment. It is a repeatable way to practice the judgment, communication, troubleshooting and review work expected on a cloud or platform team.
What does “simulating the cloud engineer” actually involve?
The simulation places you in a junior Cloud or Platform Engineer role rather than asking you to answer isolated exam questions. Your work arrives as a business request that may be incomplete, contradictory or technically open-ended. You must clarify the objective, choose an implementation, investigate documentation, build the change, record assumptions and defend the result.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11In Meinert’s model, the AI plays two limited roles: Lead Cloud Architect and Project Manager. It supplies the ticket, helps with escalation after the agreed timebox, and conducts a review. The engineer is expected to do the substantive research and implementation. That division matters because immediately asking an AI for a solution removes the uncertainty and troubleshooting practice the exercise is meant to create.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The simulation is designed to bridge the gap between passing certification exams and operating in a team. Meinert summarizes the motivation this way: “To bridge the gap between passing exams and operating in the wild, I’ve set up an ongoing, interactive simulation.”
How does a realistic practice day run?
A useful simulation has a fixed cadence. The routine below turns self-study into a small operating system for your practice rather than an occasional lab.
1. Start with a standup
Write three short updates before touching the implementation:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Completed: what you finished since the previous session, including links to code, diagrams or test output.
- Today: the single ticket objective you intend to advance.
- Blockers: missing requirements, permissions, failed tests, cost concerns or decisions that need architectural input.
Keeping the update written creates a work history. It also exposes a common weakness in self-study: spending hours on a task without being able to state what changed or what is preventing completion.
2. Pull a messy, business-oriented ticket
Use a Jira-style request, not a question such as “What is an Azure virtual network?” A realistic ticket might ask you to separate workloads into an enterprise hub-and-spoke network, reduce exposure of a secret store, or add an automated workflow to an existing application. The request should identify a business outcome, constraints and an owner, while leaving enough design work for you.
Before coding, rewrite the ticket as acceptance criteria. State what must exist, how it will be tested, which environments are affected, what is explicitly out of scope and what information is still unknown. If a requirement is ambiguous, record a reasonable assumption and continue until the timebox or an actual blocker requires escalation.
3. Research and implement independently
Use the cloud provider’s documentation, Terraform documentation, security guidance and error messages as your primary working material. Build the smallest change that satisfies the acceptance criteria, then test failure cases. Keep a decision log explaining alternatives you rejected, identity and network assumptions, state-management choices, estimated resource costs and rollback steps.

Independent execution is the point of the exercise. Searching documentation, finding the correct resource property, interpreting an error and revising a plan are normal engineering activities; they are not signs that the practice task is going badly.
4. Timebox the work and escalate deliberately
Choose a limit before starting, such as one focused work session or a stated number of hours. When the limit is reached, provide the AI reviewer with the ticket, your acceptance criteria, evidence of what you tried, the exact error or uncertainty, and the options you see. Ask for a decision or a hint, not a complete replacement implementation.
This creates an observable escalation habit. In a real team, the quality of the handoff often matters as much as the eventual fix.
5. Submit for code review
Review the change as if it were a pull request. The review should cover whether the system works, but also whether it is safe, affordable, maintainable and consistent with enterprise practice. Request revisions, make them, and record why the final version was accepted.
Why is this different from certification labs?
Certification study is valuable for learning service concepts and validated exam objectives. A simulation targets the decisions that exams and scripted labs usually remove.
| Practice dimension | Typical scripted lab or exam | Role simulation |
|---|---|---|
| Task definition | Known objective with prescribed success conditions | Business ticket whose technical path is not predetermined |
| Ambiguity | Usually minimized so the learner can demonstrate a skill | Requirements, ownership and constraints may need clarification or explicit assumptions |
| Troubleshooting | Often limited to an expected sequence | Independent documentation work, failed attempts and competing implementation options |
| Feedback | Automated pass/fail or a worked solution | Review of functionality, security, cost and enterprise practices |
| Operational communication | Rarely assessed | Standups, decision records, timeboxes and escalation are part of the deliverable |
| Outcome evidence | Completion of the lab or exam objective | Portfolio evidence of reasoning and iteration; the source does not establish employment or performance results |
The simulation therefore complements, rather than replaces, structured training. It can reveal that you know how to deploy a resource but have not practiced deciding whether it should be deployed, who should access it, how it is monitored or how it will be removed safely.
How can you build your own simulation step by step?
You can reproduce the method with a repository, an issue tracker and a written review protocol. The following setup keeps the work small enough to sustain while preserving team-like friction.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Choose a bounded environment. Select one cloud subscription or free-tier-safe sandbox, define a monthly spending limit, and separate test resources from anything that holds real personal data.
- Define the role and stakeholders. Write a one-page brief naming you as the junior engineer and an AI or human reviewer as the lead architect. Add a fictional product owner, security contact and operations owner so tickets have competing concerns.
- Create a queue of outcomes. Draft tickets around networking, identity, secrets, deployment, observability and automation. Each ticket should include a business reason, constraints and acceptance criteria, but not a tutorial.
- Set a working agreement. Require a standup, a decision log, a timebox, evidence of tests and a review before closure. Specify when escalation is allowed and what information the escalation must contain.
- Implement as code where practical. Use Terraform for repeatable infrastructure and a separate repository or directory for application and automation code. Keep state protected, use variables for environment differences and avoid committing secrets.
- Review and iterate. Have the reviewer challenge one design assumption, one security control, one cost choice and one operational procedure. Update the implementation and documentation before marking the ticket complete.
- Retain an evidence trail. Save the original ticket, standups, plan output, test results, review comments and final diagram. A future interviewer can then see how your decisions changed, not just a screenshot of a deployed resource.
Which projects make good cloud-engineering simulations?
Meinert’s examples show how a progression can move from foundational infrastructure to application and operations work. They use Azure and Terraform, but the ticket pattern can be transferred to another provider or infrastructure tool.

Enterprise hub-and-spoke network
Ask for a central hub with shared services and separate spoke networks for workloads. A strong ticket requires address planning, routing, security boundaries, connectivity testing and a documented onboarding process for a new spoke. Reviewers can challenge whether the design scales, how traffic is inspected and how accidental exposure is prevented.
Serverless password vault
A project using Azure Static Web Apps and Functions creates realistic questions about authentication, authorization, data protection, input validation, logging and recovery. Treat it as a security exercise, not merely a deployment exercise: define what the system must never log, which identities can read secrets and how a compromised credential would be revoked.
Cloud Resume Challenge site
A personal site is a manageable first ticket for static hosting, a content-delivery path, infrastructure as code and a CI/CD workflow. The simulation becomes more realistic when you add requirements for a repeatable deployment, a rollback, a change approval and basic availability monitoring.
Logic Apps extension
Extending an existing workflow introduces integration concerns: trigger behavior, retries, idempotency, connection permissions and failure notifications. Ask the reviewer to test duplicate events and a downstream outage rather than accepting only the successful path.

The planned series includes Azure Key Vault work with role-based access control and virtual-network subnet rules, CI/CD pipelines and administrative-task automation. These are useful follow-on tasks because they force you to connect identity, network policy, deployment safety and day-two operations.
How should AI participate without doing the work for you?
Give the AI enough context to act as a demanding teammate: the ticket, constraints, current architecture, commands tried, error output and your proposed options. Ask it to identify missing risks, review an approach or suggest what evidence to collect. Do not begin by asking for a finished Terraform module.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
At escalation, require the AI to explain the trade-off behind its recommendation and to identify any assumptions it made. Then verify the recommendation against current provider documentation and your own test environment. An AI response is a review input, not proof that a design is secure, supported or inexpensive.
What should a cloud code review check?
Use a review checklist that treats infrastructure as production software.
- Functionality: Does the change meet every acceptance criterion? Are positive, negative and rollback paths tested?
- Identity and security: Are permissions least-privilege? Are secrets kept out of source control and logs? Are network rules explicit and default-deny where appropriate?
- Reliability: What happens during a dependency failure, duplicate event, zone outage or partially completed deployment?
- Cost: Which resources incur recurring charges, what sizing assumptions were made, and how will unused test resources be removed?
- Operations: Can another engineer understand the architecture, deploy it, monitor it and recover it from documented instructions?
- Terraform quality: Is state handled safely, are modules and variables understandable, are plans reviewed, and can the change be applied repeatedly without drift or unintended replacement?
- Enterprise fit: Does the design follow naming, tagging, environment separation, change-control and audit expectations defined for the practice environment?
What evidence can this method provide—and what can it not prove?
A completed simulation can demonstrate a process: how you turn an ambiguous request into criteria, investigate documentation, make trade-offs, communicate a blocker and respond to review comments. A repository containing tickets, plans, diagrams and decision records is more informative than a list of badges alone.
It cannot establish that you have operated a live production service, handled an actual incident, worked under a company’s compliance obligations or delivered a measured employment outcome. Meinert reports certifications including AZ-900, AZ-104, AZ-700 and SC-300 and says he is moving toward AB-650, along with the projects described above; no success rate, hiring rate, salary result or controlled comparison is published for the simulation. Present your work accurately as structured practice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can the approach work outside Azure and Terraform?
Yes. The transferable unit is the workflow, not a particular service. Replace Azure tickets with AWS, Google Cloud or an on-premises platform, and replace Terraform with another infrastructure-as-code system while retaining the same requirements: ambiguous business context, independent research, a timebox, escalation, evidence and multidimensional review.
Keep the first stack narrow enough to learn deeply. Platform specificity still matters because permissions, networking, billing and failure modes differ by provider. Once you can complete a full simulation cycle, repeat the same business outcome on another stack and compare the design decisions rather than copying resource names.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat commonly goes wrong, and how do you fix it?
The tickets are secretly tutorials
If every issue names the exact service and commands, you are practicing syntax. Remove the implementation steps and leave only the outcome, constraints and acceptance tests.

Is simulating a junior cloud engineer worth doing?
It is worthwhile when your current study has taught you services but not the work surrounding them. The simulation adds ambiguity, communication, independent troubleshooting and review without pretending that a sandbox is production. Use it alongside certification preparation, and judge progress by the quality of your tickets, evidence and revisions rather than by an invented completion score.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should one simulated cloud ticket take?
Set the duration according to the task’s risk and scope, then write the limit before you begin. A small identity or automation change may fit in one focused session, while a network design can require several sessions with an explicit handoff between them.
What should I put in a portfolio for this kind of practice?
Include the sanitized ticket, acceptance criteria, architecture diagram, infrastructure code, test evidence, decision log and review changes. Remove subscription identifiers, secrets, personal data and any configuration that could expose your environment.
How can a beginner make tickets realistic without industry contacts?
Base fictional requests on a product with identifiable users, an owner, a security concern and an operating cost. Add one change request after the first version, such as a new environment, tighter access rule or recovery requirement, so you practice adapting an existing system.
Should I simulate incidents as well as planned changes?
Yes, once you can complete the normal workflow. Inject a controlled failure—such as a revoked permission, unavailable dependency or bad configuration—and practice detection, containment, communication, rollback and a short post-incident record.
