To sign a document using an iPhone, open the PDF, tap Markup, choose Add (+) → Add Signature, draw your signature, place it on the signature line, then save and share the completed PDF. If the sender provides a DocuSign or Adobe Acrobat Sign link, use that service instead of adding a separate Markup signature.
The best method depends on what the document requires. Markup is usually enough for a routine PDF that needs only a signature. On iOS 26, Preview can fill and sign PDF forms natively. Acrobat is useful for difficult or scanned forms, while a managed e-signature service is the right choice when the sender requires identity checks, audit records, multiple signers, or a specific signing platform.
Key takeaways
- iPhone Markup can add a drawn signature, move and resize it, add text boxes, and share the completed PDF without requiring a dedicated e-signature account.
- On iOS 26, Apple Preview can fill PDF form fields and insert a signature from the iPhone.
- A scanned or flat PDF may need manually placed text boxes because blank lines do not necessarily represent interactive fields.
- A DocuSign or Adobe Acrobat Sign invitation should be completed through the provided link so the signing workflow can record required fields and signing events.
- A drawn iPhone signature is an electronic signature method, but it does not automatically provide the audit trail, identity verification, or certificate-backed authentication of a managed or digital-signature workflow.
Which method should you use to sign a document using an iPhone?
Use the method that matches the document rather than automatically installing an app. This decision table covers the most common cases:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Your situation | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A normal PDF needs only your signature | Markup | Fast, built into supported iPhone apps, and usually sufficient for a simple signature. |
| A PDF form needs typed information and a signature | Preview on iOS 26, or Acrobat mobile | Both provide tools for entering text and placing a signature. |
| The PDF is scanned or has no interactive fields | Markup text boxes or Acrobat Fill & Sign | Static lines must be filled by placing text manually. |
| The sender supplied a DocuSign, Adobe Acrobat Sign, Dropbox Sign, or similar link | The specified signing service | The service may manage required fields, signer order, notifications, authentication, and records. |
| Several people must sign the same document | The sender’s managed e-signature workflow | Separate annotated copies can create conflicting or incomplete versions. |
| A certificate-backed digital signature is required | A certificate-based digital-signature workflow | A basic drawn signature does not authenticate a document with a digital ID. |
How do you sign a PDF with iPhone Markup?
For a PDF that only needs a handwritten-style signature, iPhone Markup is normally the quickest option. Apple documents Markup signature tools in supported apps, including ways to create, move, resize, and share signatures.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains the Markup signature workflow, although the exact location of the Markup control can vary depending on the app displaying the PDF.
- Open the PDF from Files, Mail, Messages, Safari, Notes, Photos, or another app that can display the document.
- Tap the Markup icon. The icon commonly looks like a pen tip inside a circle.
- If Markup is not immediately visible, tap Share and look for Markup, or save the PDF to Files and open it there.
- Tap Add (+).
- Tap Add Signature.
- Draw your signature with your finger.
- Tap Done.
- Tap the signature to select it, then drag it onto the correct signature line. Use the resize handles if the signature is too large or too small.
- If the document requires a date, printed name, initials, address, or another short entry, tap Add (+) → Add Text and place a text box in the appropriate location.
- Tap Done again after completing the page.
- Use Share to send the signed PDF through Mail, Messages, AirDrop, or another destination, or save a copy to Files.
What can you do with an iPhone Markup signature?
Markup signatures can be drawn with a finger and then moved or resized. Apple also documents support for creating multiple signatures, adjusting line weight or color, and deleting signatures. The available controls can differ slightly between apps and iOS versions.
Markup is appropriate when the recipient accepts a simple electronic signature and does not require a particular provider or signing record. Markup does not automatically create a managed transaction with signer authentication, an audit trail, or certificate-based digital signing.
How do you add a date or typed information with Markup?
Use Add (+) → Add Text to place a text box over a date line or other static area. Zoom in before placing the text box, select an appropriate size, and check the alignment after saving. Markup text boxes are especially useful for dates, printed names, initials, phone numbers, addresses, job titles, and checkbox-like marks.
How do you fill and sign a PDF with Preview on iOS 26?
On iOS 26, Apple Preview on iPhone can fill out and sign PDF forms. Preview is not a universal option for every iPhone because the workflow is tied to Apple’s iOS 26 documentation. Readers on earlier iOS releases may not have Preview or may see different controls.
Apple’s iOS 26 instructions for filling and signing PDF forms in Preview describe the following path:
- Open Preview on the iPhone.
- Open the PDF form.
- Tap the form-filling button.
- Tap a form field and enter the required information.
- To add a signature or text form box, tap Add (+).
- Choose the signature option and create or select a signature.
- Position the signature on the form.
- Review every field, then save or share the completed PDF.
Preview is a good native choice when the PDF contains several form fields and the iPhone is running iOS 26. If Preview is unavailable, use Markup through Files, Mail, Notes, or Photos, or use a dedicated PDF app.
What is the difference between an interactive, flat, and locked PDF?
The difference is whether the PDF contains usable form fields and whether the document owner has allowed changes:

| PDF type | What happens when you tap a blank area | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Interactive PDF form | A field accepts typed information or provides a control. | Tap the fields and enter the information, then add the signature. |
| Flat or scanned PDF | Nothing happens because the visible lines are part of the page artwork. | Add text boxes manually with Markup or use Acrobat Fill & Sign. |
| Locked or restricted PDF | Filling, editing, or signing may be disabled. | Ask the sender for an unlocked or fillable copy, a password, or a signing-platform invitation. |
A PDF can look like a form without containing interactive fields. A scanned lease, application, or printed form saved as a PDF is often just an image. Tapping its blank lines will not necessarily open a keyboard.
With Markup, add a text box manually and type over the appropriate area. With Acrobat mobile, open the PDF, choose Fill & Sign, select Text box, and tap where the text should appear. Adobe’s current Acrobat mobile Fill & Sign instructions document this text-box workflow.
How do you use Adobe Acrobat to sign a document on an iPhone?
Acrobat mobile is useful when Markup is difficult to control, the PDF needs several manually positioned entries, or the signature must be created from an image or camera capture. The current app name and controls should not be confused with older guides referring to a separate “Adobe Fill & Sign” app.

- Tap Done.
- Move and resize the signature so it fits the designated line.
- Save or share the completed PDF.
Adobe’s Acrobat for iOS documentation describes the available signature-creation methods and saving behavior for Acrobat’s own workflow. Do not assume that technical behavior documented for Acrobat applies identically to Apple Markup.
Acrobat mobile is more than is necessary for a one-off signature, so start with Markup when the recipient accepts a basic signed PDF. Acrobat becomes more useful when the document is scanned, difficult to position, or requires repeated text and signature placement.
How do you sign a document sent through DocuSign or Adobe Acrobat Sign?
If the sender sent a signing link, open the link and complete the document inside the specified service. Do not download the document, add a separate Markup signature, and email it back unless the sender explicitly says that alternative is acceptable.
DocuSign on an iPhone
- Open the DocuSign email or text message.
- Tap the review or signing link.
- Follow the on-screen prompts.
- Tap each required field.
- Create or adopt a signature when prompted.
- Complete all required fields.
- Submit the document.
DocuSign says recipients can sign documents on an iPhone or iPad and can sign without paying for a signer account. That does not mean sending documents through DocuSign is free; sending requires the sender’s applicable plan or trial.

Adobe’s Acrobat Sign iOS documentation describes the Waiting for You panel and required-field workflow. Acrobat Sign is a managed signing service, while Acrobat mobile is the general PDF app used to fill and sign a document yourself. The Acrobat Sign app may require an active qualifying Adobe subscription depending on the offering and account; check the current app and account requirements before relying on it.

Why should you use the provided signing service instead of Markup?
A managed signing service can preserve the signing sequence and record details such as who signed, when required fields were completed, whether identity verification was used, and whether the signed record was altered afterward. Adobe describes audit trails, identity verification, and tamper-evident protections for its managed signing service; DocuSign and Dropbox Sign also describe workflow records and audit trails.
Managed signing is particularly important for multiple signers, contracts with a required signing order, business workflows, reminders, templates, identity verification, or documents whose sender requires a particular provider.
What is the difference between an electronic signature and a digital signature?
An electronic signature is the broad category. It can include a typed name, a drawn signature, a signature image, a click indicating consent, or a signature placed in a PDF.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA digital signature is usually a certificate-based signature that uses a digital ID and cryptographic verification. Adobe’s documentation distinguishes certificate-based digital signatures from ordinary electronic signing methods and describes the role of trusted certificate authorities. A signature drawn in Markup does not automatically become a certificate-backed digital signature.
| Type | Typical example | What it may provide |
|---|---|---|
| Basic electronic signature | A signature drawn with iPhone Markup | A visible indication of the signer’s intent, when accepted by the recipient. |
| Managed e-signature | DocuSign, Acrobat Sign, Dropbox Sign, or PandaDoc workflow | Required fields, signer routing, notifications, audit records, and possibly identity verification. |
| Certificate-based digital signature | A PDF signed with a digital ID and certificate | Cryptographic authentication and a way to detect changes, subject to the certificate and workflow requirements. |
Is a signature added on an iPhone legally valid?
For ordinary U.S. business and personal documents, an electronic signature is generally recognized in many transactions, but an iPhone signature is not automatically valid for every document or jurisdiction. The federal ESIGN Act generally prevents a contract or signature from being denied validity merely because it is electronic, while state law, transaction rules, consent, and the recipient’s requirements can still matter. DocuSign’s overview of the U.S. ESIGN Act and electronic contracts provides general legal context.
The important questions can include whether the signer intended to sign, whether electronic signing consent was obtained where required, whether the signer can be identified, whether the record can be retained and reproduced, and whether the document was changed after signing.
Follow the sender’s instructions for regulated, government, court, financial, employment, real-estate, high-value, or otherwise sensitive documents. The sender may require a particular e-signature provider, identity verification, a certificate-based digital signature, an audit trail, notarization, or a different signing method. This is general information, not legal advice.
What does signing software cost?
You do not need to buy signing software for a simple PDF if the recipient accepts iPhone Markup. Paid services are mainly relevant when you send signature requests, manage business documents, or need a formal workflow.

How do you troubleshoot an iPhone signature that does not work?
Markup is missing
Tap Share and look for Markup. If the PDF is being previewed inside Mail or Messages, save the attachment to Files and open it there. The Markup button’s position can vary by the app displaying the document. If Markup remains unavailable, try Preview on iOS 26 or Acrobat mobile.
The blank line will not accept typing
The PDF is probably flat or scanned rather than an interactive form. Add a text box manually with Markup, or open the PDF in Acrobat and use Fill & Sign → Text box.
Recommended Free Tools
The PDF is locked or password-protected
Ask the sender for an unlocked copy, a fillable copy, the password if the sender intends you to edit the document, or an invitation through a signing platform. Do not bypass document security or use a workaround that defeats the owner’s restrictions.
The signature disappears or prints incorrectly
Save a new copy, close it, and reopen it before sending. Confirm that the signature remains visible. If the recipient requires a flattened PDF, use an export or print-preview workflow that the recipient accepts, or ask whether Acrobat is required. Apple’s cited Markup guide explains placing a signature but does not establish that every Markup result is permanently embedded or flattened. Acrobat’s documented behavior applies to Acrobat’s own saved-PDF workflow.
The recipient rejects the signed document
Ask the recipient exactly what is missing. The recipient may require the signature on a particular line, initials on every page, a specific date format, a particular file type, a DocuSign or Acrobat Sign transaction, a certificate-based digital signature, an audit trail, or identity verification.
Several people need to sign
Do not have each signer annotate separate copies and email them independently unless the sender specifically requests that process. Ask which person should sign first or use the sender’s signing platform so everyone signs the same controlled document.
What about Word documents and images?
This guide focuses on PDFs because PDF signing tools preserve the document format more reliably. A Word file or image may need to be converted to PDF or opened in an app that supports Markup. DocuSign and Dropbox Sign advertise support for multiple document formats in their signing workflows, but the sender’s required format should take priority.

What should you check before sending the signed document?
- Open the exported or saved file before sending it.
- Confirm that the signature appears on the intended page and line.
- Check that the signature does not cover important text.
- Confirm that the date, printed name, initials, and every required field are present.
- Make sure the file is still a PDF if the recipient requested a PDF.
- Verify that you are sending the completed copy, not the unsigned original.
- Check that you are sending the correct version of the document.
- For a signing link, confirm that the service reports the transaction as finished.
- Use a trusted channel because the signed document may contain personal, financial, employment, or legal information.
Do not send a screenshot when the recipient requested a signed PDF. A screenshot can omit pages, reduce quality, remove document structure, or fail the recipient’s file validation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sign a PDF on an iPhone without downloading an app?
Yes. For a routine PDF, open the file in a supported iPhone app, use Markup, choose Add (+) → Add Signature, draw the signature, place it, and save or share the PDF. A sender-controlled signing workflow may still require its own service.
Why can’t I type on a PDF form on my iPhone?
The PDF may be flat or scanned, meaning its visible lines are not interactive fields. Add text boxes manually with Markup or use Acrobat mobile’s Fill & Sign and Text box tools.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I use Markup when someone sends me a DocuSign link?
Usually no. Open the DocuSign link and complete the required fields inside DocuSign so the sender receives the expected workflow record. Use Markup only if the sender explicitly accepts a separately annotated PDF.
Is a signature drawn on an iPhone the same as a digital signature?
No. A drawn iPhone signature is an electronic signature method. A digital signature usually uses a certificate and digital ID to provide cryptographic verification, while a managed e-signature service can add audit trails and identity checks.
What should I do if the recipient says my iPhone signature is invalid?
Ask the recipient which requirement was not met, such as signer order, required fields, provider, certificate, audit trail, identity verification, date format, or file type. Then follow the requested signing workflow rather than repeatedly sending Markup copies.
The Bottom Line
For a basic PDF, iPhone Markup is the fastest free way to add a signature: use Add (+) → Add Signature, position the signature, review the saved PDF, and send the completed copy. Use iOS 26 Preview or Acrobat when the document needs substantial form filling. When a sender provides DocuSign, Acrobat Sign, or another signing link, use that managed workflow because a visible signature alone may not satisfy the document’s authentication and recordkeeping requirements.
