The two directions use different menu entries and save received files in different default folders.
Check requirements and connect your devices
Microsoft’s file-sharing instructions list Windows 11, or Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later; Android 10 or later; Link to Windows Android app version 1.24032.518.0 or later; and Phone Link version 1.24032.156.0 or later. These are the requirements listed for the Share-menu file-transfer workflow on Microsoft’s file-transfer support page.
Microsoft’s broader Phone Link requirements and setup page specifies Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, Android 10 or later, and both devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The minimums can differ by feature, so check the file-sharing requirements for the particular workflow if your setup does not match.
Set up Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the Android device, then connect the devices through their setup flow. Keep them on the same Wi-Fi network as Microsoft’s general setup guidance specifies.

Send a file from Windows to Android
- On the PC, locate a file saved locally, right-click it, and choose Share.
- In the share window’s app section, choose Phone Link.
- If you want transfer progress and completion alerts on Windows, leave Phone Link notifications enabled.
- On Android, tap the Link to Windows notification to open the default file manager and access the received file.
Windows-to-phone files are saved on Android in Downloads > Sent from your PC. If the item you share is stored in the cloud rather than locally on the PC, the share action sends a link to its cloud location instead of transferring the file itself.
Send a file from Android to Windows
- On Android, select a file and tap Share.
- In the system Share drawer, choose Link to Windows – Send to PC.
- Select the connected Windows PC from the device list.
- Keep the sharing page open until the status changes to Sent.
- On Windows, open the file or its folder from the Phone Link notification.
Android-to-PC files go by default to DownloadsPhone Link on Windows. Microsoft says you can change this destination in Phone Link settings.

Share menu or drag-and-drop?
Drag-and-drop is a separate, optional Phone Link feature, and eligibility depends on the Android device and feature support. Microsoft documents it for devices that support the feature; it also requires both devices to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Use the Share-menu procedure above when drag-and-drop is unavailable or when you need its simpler supported file-transfer workflow.

For drag-and-drop, a receiving app may not accept a particular file type. If that happens, try the phone screen or the device’s file manager instead. Microsoft documents drag-and-drop separately from the Share-menu steps on its file-transfer support page.
