If an iPhone video is too large for an ordinary email attachment, use AirDrop for someone nearby, an iCloud Link for a remote recipient, or Mail Drop if you want to send it through Mail. The right option depends on where the recipient is and whether you want to send a link or an email.
Choose the right way to send the video

Send the video with AirDrop
AirDrop is the most direct choice when the recipient is close by. Apple says AirDrop sends information using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; both must be enabled on the devices.
- Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices.
- Open Photos and select the video.
- Tap Share, then AirDrop, and choose the recipient or device.
- Ask the recipient to accept the transfer. If they are not in your Contacts, Apple says an iPhone or iPad recipient can temporarily set AirDrop to Everyone for 10 Minutes.
If the original format or associated metadata, location, edit history, or captions matter, tap Options before sharing and enable All Photos Data. That setting is available in the AirDrop sharing options described in Apple’s guide.
Send an iCloud Link to a remote recipient
An iCloud Link lets you send a URL rather than attach the video to an email. Apple’s instructions require iCloud Photos to be on, and the recipient has 30 days to download the video.

- Make sure iCloud Photos is turned on.
- In Photos, select the video and tap Share.
- Tap Options, then Copy iCloud Link.
- Paste the link into Mail, Messages, or another communication app and send it.
Because this is a URL-based handoff, it can be sent to someone who does not use an Apple device. Apple’s guide does not enumerate every recipient platform, so whether a particular device or app handles the link as expected can vary.
Send through Mail with Mail Drop
Choose Mail Drop when you want to start the handoff in Mail rather than send a link yourself. From Photos, select the video, tap Share, choose Mail, enter the recipient, and send. Mail Drop handles a large attachment through iCloud instead of requiring it to fit as a standard attachment.

Apple’s Mail Drop limits page, dated March 18, 2025, sets a maximum of 5 GB per attachment or message and a 1 TB storage ceiling. Each attachment expires after 30 days. The recipient’s email provider can still impose a smaller message-size limit; Apple also notes this caveat in its instructions for adding an email attachment in Mail on iCloud.com. Upload and download time depends on the video size and connection speed.

What to check if Mail Drop or a link fails
- The video exceeds 5 GB: That is outside Mail Drop’s documented maximum. Try an iCloud Link instead, provided iCloud Photos is on.
- The recipient cannot open the email attachment: Their email provider may enforce a smaller limit. Sending an iCloud Link avoids relying on that provider’s attachment-size allowance.
- A Mail Drop link is unavailable: Apple lists exceeded message or recipient limits, an uncompressed folder attachment, or reaching the 1 TB storage ceiling as possible causes. High traffic or excessive downloads can also affect access.
- The transfer is slow: Large files take longer to upload or download, and connection speed affects the wait. Apple does not state a fixed transfer time.
- A device or browser behaves differently: Apple lists Mail Drop support for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 9.2 or later, as well as Mac and PC browsers. Check Apple’s current Mail Drop limits page for compatibility details.
