For a self-hosted WordPress site, try https://yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml to open the core sitemap index. If your site uses an SEO plugin, its sitemap link may use a different route; WordPress.com users can try /sitemap.xml or check Jetpack’s Sitemaps section.
WordPress core has generated XML sitemaps since WordPress 5.5. The right address depends on your hosting platform, permalink settings, and which sitemap generator is active.
Choose the sitemap route for your WordPress site

Find a sitemap on self-hosted WordPress
- Open your site’s home address in a browser and add /wp-sitemap.xml to the end. For example, use https://yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml.
- If the address does not work and pretty permalinks are disabled, try https://yourdomain.com/?sitemap=index.
- If neither address shows the expected sitemap, check your site’s active SEO or sitemap plugin and use its dashboard link instead.
WordPress core introduced built-in XML sitemaps in WordPress 5.5. The core sitemap index path for sites using pretty permalinks is /wp-sitemap.xml. WordPress’s announcement of the feature describes its introduction.
Find the sitemap through an SEO plugin
An SEO plugin may provide the sitemap instead of WordPress core, so there is no single plugin route that applies to every site. Check which sitemap or SEO plugin is active in your WordPress dashboard, then open its sitemap settings or link.

All in One SEO
- Sign in to your WordPress dashboard as an administrator.
- Open All in One SEO → Sitemaps.
- In the General Sitemap section, select Open Sitemap.
Yoast SEO
- In the dashboard, open Yoast SEO → Settings → Site features.
- Check that XML sitemaps are enabled.
- Select View the XML sitemap.
Plugin menus can change, so if these labels do not match your dashboard, look for the sitemap setting in the active plugin.
Find the sitemap on WordPress.com
- Try opening your site’s home address followed by /sitemap.xml.
- If you cannot find it there, open Jetpack → Traffic and look for the Sitemaps section. In some dashboard versions, it may be under Jetpack → Settings → Traffic.
These WordPress.com instructions are distinct from the self-hosted WordPress core route. For more details, see WordPress.com’s sitemap support documentation.

Troubleshoot a missing sitemap
- Check the platform and generator: confirm whether the site is self-hosted WordPress or WordPress.com, then check whether core or a plugin manages its sitemap.
- Check permalink settings: if core is responsible and pretty permalinks are disabled, try /?sitemap=index.
- Check search engine visibility: in Settings → Reading, make sure Discourage search engines from indexing this site is not selected. This is one possible diagnostic check, not a universal explanation for sitemap errors. Learn WordPress’s sitemap lesson notes that the setting can result in a 404 in the setup it describes.
- Check plugin settings or conflicts: for Yoast SEO, confirm XML sitemaps are enabled and use its View the XML sitemap link. Another plugin or a physical sitemap file may handle an address that Yoast does not generate.
A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs, but having one does not guarantee that pages will be indexed or improve rankings by itself.

What is the sitemap URL for self-hosted WordPress?
When WordPress core manages the sitemap and pretty permalinks are enabled, try https://yourdomain.com/wp-sitemap.xml. If pretty permalinks are disabled, try https://yourdomain.com/?sitemap=index.

Why is my WordPress sitemap returning a 404?
Check whether you are using the right address for your platform and sitemap generator. Also check permalink configuration, the active plugin’s sitemap settings, and whether search engine visibility is discouraged. A 404 alone does not prove that no sitemap exists.
Does WordPress.com use the same sitemap URL as self-hosted WordPress?
Not necessarily. WordPress.com points users to /sitemap.xml or the Sitemaps section under Jetpack → Traffic. Self-hosted WordPress core commonly uses /wp-sitemap.xml.

Does having a sitemap guarantee better rankings?
No. A sitemap helps search engines discover URLs, but it does not guarantee indexing or higher rankings.
