To route TV sound to a soundbar, receiver, or powered speakers, first match the connection both devices support: HDMI ARC/eARC, optical (TOSLINK), analogue audio, or Bluetooth. Connect the cable or pair the speaker, select the corresponding output in the TV’s Sound or Audio menu, choose the same input on the speaker, and raise its volume. HDMI ARC/eARC is usually the most convenient wired option because it can carry audio and allow compatible remote control; optical is a reliable fallback, while Bluetooth avoids cables but may need pairing troubleshooting.
Which connection should I use for external TV speakers?
Use HDMI ARC or eARC when both the TV and soundbar or receiver have matching ARC/eARC ports. Choose optical when HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable. Bluetooth is useful when you want a cable-free installation and both products support compatible profiles. Analogue audio works with TVs that provide a headphone or line-level output and speakers with the corresponding input.
| Connection | What you need | Remote-control convenience | Typical reason to choose it | Potential limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | An HDMI cable and ARC/eARC ports on both devices | Usually the simplest single-cable control path when HDMI-CEC is enabled | Preferred wired setup for a soundbar or AV receiver | Both devices must support the same ARC/eARC and CEC behavior; the correct HDMI port is essential |
| Optical (TOSLINK) | An optical cable and optical ports | Separate volume control may be needed, depending on equipment | Dependable fallback when ARC/eARC is not available | It does not use the TV’s HDMI-CEC control path |
| Bluetooth | A TV and speaker with compatible Bluetooth support | Wireless convenience, but behavior varies by model | No cable run or when the speaker is positioned away from the TV | Pairing, range, and interference can affect setup |
| Analogue audio | Compatible headphone, line-out, or other analogue output and matching speaker input | Depends on the TV and speaker design | Older or simpler equipment without digital audio ports | Not every TV has an analogue output, and the connector type must match |
Check the labels on the back or side of the TV and speaker before buying a cable. A port labelled ARC or eARC is not interchangeable with an ordinary HDMI input for this purpose.
How do I connect a soundbar with HDMI ARC or eARC?
Connect one HDMI cable between the TV port labelled ARC/eARC and the soundbar or receiver port with the same label. Then enable the TV’s HDMI-CEC and ARC controls if required, select the HDMI audio system in the TV menu, and set the soundbar to its HDMI ARC/eARC input.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Find the correct TV port. Look for “HDMI ARC” or “HDMI eARC.” Do not use a regular HDMI input if the TV has a dedicated ARC/eARC port.
- Connect the cable. Plug one end into the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the other into the soundbar or receiver’s ARC/eARC port. Push both connectors fully home.
- Enable HDMI-CEC. The control feature has different names by platform: CEC on Roku TV and Fire TV, Anynet+ on Samsung, SIMPLINK on LG, and BRAVIA Sync on Sony. Android TV and Google TV commonly place it under Inputs or External devices control.
- Enable ARC if the menu separates it. Some televisions have a separate ARC or eARC switch in the audio or HDMI settings.
- Choose the TV output. Open Sound, Audio, or Speakers and choose HDMI ARC, HDMI eARC, Audio system, or the equivalent label.
- Select the matching soundbar input. Use the soundbar remote or its input button to choose HDMI ARC/eARC rather than Bluetooth, optical, or a regular HDMI source.
- Test at a low volume first. Play live TV or an app, then increase the soundbar volume. If the TV still uses its internal speakers, return to the output menu and confirm that Audio system or HDMI ARC/eARC remains selected.
CEC is commonly needed for ARC operation and for convenient control from the TV remote. The exact menu wording can change with a TV model or software version, so use the manufacturer’s manual when the labels differ.
Where are the HDMI ARC and CEC settings on common TV platforms?
These paths are typical starting points, not universal commands. Manufacturers can move or rename options between models and software versions.
| TV platform or brand | Audio-output path | CEC or related control path | Important setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku TV | Settings > Audio > Audio Output > eARC | Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC) | Connect the soundbar or receiver to the HDMI port labelled ARC/eARC |
| Fire TV | Settings > Display & Sound > ARC > Enable HDMI ARC | Settings > Display & Sound > HDMI-CEC Devices | Turn on both the relevant CEC control and ARC option |
| Android TV or Google TV | Settings > Sound or Audio > Audio Output > HDMI ARC/eARC | Usually under Inputs or External devices control | The menu name depends on the TV maker’s interface |
| Samsung | For optical: Settings > Sound > Sound Output > Optical; HDMI uses the TV’s ARC/eARC audio-system option | Enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) | Use the HDMI port specifically labelled ARC/eARC |
| LG | Settings > Sound > Sound Out, then Audio Out (Optical/HDMI ARC) or the relevant wireless-speaker option | Enable SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC) | Check the selected output and the soundbar input |
| Sony | Display & Sound > Audio output > Speakers > Audio system, or Sound > Speakers > Audio system | Enable BRAVIA Sync where required | Use ARC/eARC first, with optical or analogue as alternatives when available |
How do I use an optical cable instead of HDMI?
Run a TOSLINK cable from the TV’s optical or Digital Audio Out port to the soundbar’s optical input. In the TV’s Sound or Audio menu, select Optical or Digital Audio Out, then select Optical on the soundbar.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Remove any protective caps from the optical cable ends if present.
- Insert one end into the TV port labelled Optical, Digital Audio Out, or a similar designation.
- Insert the other end into the soundbar or receiver’s Optical or TOSLINK input. The plug should fit without force; do not bend the cable sharply.
- Open the TV’s Sound or Audio Output menu and choose Optical or Digital Audio Out.
- Set the soundbar to its optical input and verify that its mute control is off.
Optical is especially useful when the TV lacks an ARC/eARC port or when HDMI-CEC devices do not cooperate. Because it does not use the ARC/CEC control route, you may need the soundbar remote for volume or power functions, depending on the equipment.
How do I connect TV sound over Bluetooth?
Put the speaker or soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode, open the TV’s Bluetooth device list, and select the speaker’s name. After the TV reports that it is connected, choose the Bluetooth or wireless-speaker output if the TV presents a separate audio-output choice.

- On the speaker, press its Bluetooth or pairing button until the indicator shows pairing mode.
- On the TV, open Settings and find Sound, Audio Output, Bluetooth, or Bluetooth devices.
- Scan for nearby devices and select the speaker. Accept a pairing confirmation or code if one appears.
- Return to the TV’s audio-output selection and choose the paired speaker if it is not selected automatically.
- Play audio and check both the TV volume control and the speaker’s own volume or mute state.
Bluetooth pairing can fail when a nearby phone or tablet reconnects to the speaker first. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, put the speaker back into pairing mode, and scan again from the TV. Keep the speaker within its practical wireless range and away from sources of interference while completing setup.
Can I use analogue or headphone output for external speakers?
Yes, if the TV has an analogue audio output and the speaker has a matching analogue input. Sony lists an analogue audio cable as an option when the TV provides an analogue audio output; the connector may be a headphone-style jack or another line-level connection, so verify the labels before connecting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the TV’s analogue output, such as a headphone or line-out jack.
- Identify the matching input on the powered speaker, soundbar, amplifier, or receiver.
- Connect the appropriate cable, then select the TV’s analogue or headphone output if the menu offers a choice.
- Set the speaker to that analogue input and adjust volume gradually.
A headphone output can mute the TV’s internal speakers automatically, while a line output may not. If your TV offers no analogue output, use HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, or Bluetooth instead of trying to convert an unrelated port.
Why is my soundbar connected but producing no sound?
A silent soundbar is usually caused by a wrong port, a mismatched input, disabled ARC/CEC, mute or zero volume, or an incomplete Bluetooth pairing. Work through the checks below in order so that each part of the signal path is confirmed.
Check the physical connection
- For HDMI, confirm the cable is in the TV’s port explicitly labelled ARC or eARC, not a standard HDMI input.
- For optical, confirm both ends are fully inserted into the TV’s optical output and the soundbar’s optical input.
- For analogue, confirm that the cable is connected to an audio output on the TV and an audio input on the speaker.
- For Bluetooth, confirm that the TV lists the speaker as connected rather than merely discovered.
Match both selected inputs
The TV output and soundbar input must describe the same connection. A TV set to HDMI ARC/eARC will be silent if the soundbar is listening to Optical, Bluetooth, or a regular HDMI source. Likewise, selecting Optical on the soundbar does nothing when the TV is sending audio over HDMI.

Turn on the controls the connection needs
Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC for an HDMI installation when the platform requires them. Use the platform-specific names—Anynet+, SIMPLINK, BRAVIA Sync, or the CEC label shown by the TV—rather than assuming that a generic “HDMI control” switch is enabled.
Check mute and volume on both devices
Raise the soundbar volume and cancel mute. LG specifically warns that a volume set to zero can make an otherwise correct setup appear broken. Also check that the TV is not muted and that the source app is actually playing audio.
Restart the signal path
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Unplug both from power briefly, then reconnect them.
- Power on the TV first, wait for its home screen, and then power on the soundbar.
- Recheck the selected output and input before testing audio.
If the problem returns after a restart, inspect the TV and soundbar manuals for model-specific ARC, eARC, CEC, or digital-audio settings. Menu paths can differ even within the same brand.
What should I do if Bluetooth pairing keeps failing?
Prevent another device from claiming the speaker, clear the old pairing, and start a fresh scan from the TV.
- Turn off Bluetooth temporarily on nearby phones, tablets, and computers.
- Disconnect the speaker from any device that already shows it as connected.
- Put the speaker into pairing mode again; simply leaving it powered on may not be enough.
- Remove an old entry for the speaker from the TV’s Bluetooth list if the TV offers a forget or remove command.
- Scan again and select the speaker, then test audio before bringing other Bluetooth devices back online.
If the TV never lists the speaker, verify that the TV supports Bluetooth audio output and that the speaker supports a compatible audio profile. A TV may have Bluetooth for a remote or keyboard without supporting Bluetooth speakers.

What TV audio setting should I choose after connecting?
Choose the output that names the physical connection or audio system you are using: HDMI ARC/eARC or Audio system for HDMI, Optical or Digital Audio Out for TOSLINK, and Bluetooth or the paired wireless speaker for Bluetooth. If the menu offers both internal speakers and an external option, select the external option.
Some TVs also expose digital-audio format choices. Start with the default or automatic setting while diagnosing basic sound. Change format options only after the connection works, and use the soundbar or receiver manual to determine which formats it accepts. The key first test is whether any audio reaches the external device at all.
How do HDMI ARC, optical, Bluetooth, and analogue compare in practice?
The best choice depends on the ports you have, how much remote integration you want, and whether a cable run is practical.
| Decision factor | HDMI ARC/eARC | Optical | Bluetooth | Analogue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Port availability | Requires ARC/eARC on both TV and speaker | Requires optical output and input | Requires compatible Bluetooth audio support | Requires a TV analogue output and matching speaker input |
| Control from the TV remote | Generally the most convenient when CEC works | May require separate speaker controls | Varies by TV and speaker | Varies by output and equipment |
| Cable length and installation | One HDMI cable between the devices | One optical cable; protect it from sharp bends | No audio cable | One analogue cable of the required type |
| Wireless range or interference | Not applicable to the audio link | Not applicable to the audio link | Placement, range, and nearby Bluetooth connections matter | Not applicable to the audio link |
| Compatibility requirement | TV and speaker must share ARC/eARC behavior, with CEC where required | Both devices must provide compatible optical connections | Both devices must support compatible profiles | Connector and signal type must match |
How can I tell whether the TV or soundbar is the problem?
Isolate one link at a time instead of changing several settings simultaneously.
Recommended Free Tools
- Test the TV’s internal speakers. If they also produce no sound, select an internal-speaker option and test another channel or app before troubleshooting the external connection.
- Test the soundbar with another source. If the soundbar plays from another input, its amplifier and speakers are probably functioning; concentrate on the TV output, cable, or selected input.
- Try one wired method. If Bluetooth is unreliable, test optical or HDMI ARC/eARC when available. A working wired connection distinguishes pairing problems from broader audio-output problems.
- Inspect labels, not just connector shape. HDMI connectors look alike, but only the port labelled ARC/eARC returns TV audio to the soundbar.
Make one change, test, and note the result. This prevents a newly changed input or output selection from hiding the original cause.

What are the most common setup mistakes?
- Plugging the soundbar into a normal HDMI input instead of the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
- Connecting an optical cable but leaving the TV set to internal speakers or HDMI output.
- Choosing HDMI ARC on the TV while the soundbar remains on its optical or Bluetooth input.
- Leaving CEC or the platform’s branded CEC feature disabled.
- Assuming that a Bluetooth speaker is paired because it appears in the device list; it must show as connected and selected for audio output.
- Overlooking mute or a zero volume level on the soundbar.
- Following a menu path from a different TV model or software version without checking the current labels.
When should I use the TV manufacturer’s manual?
Use the manual when a menu item is missing, ARC/eARC repeatedly disconnects, the TV offers several digital-audio formats, or a port label is unclear. Official menus differ by model and software version, and the same brand can place CEC, ARC, and speaker controls in different sections. The manual also identifies whether a particular output is variable, fixed, or intended for headphones.
Can I keep the TV’s internal speakers on at the same time?
That behavior is model-specific. Many TVs switch to an external audio system when you select Audio system, Optical, or a wireless speaker, while some provide a separate option for simultaneous output. If you need both, look for a setting such as TV speakers plus external speakers in the Sound menu; do not assume that two outputs will remain synchronized.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will any HDMI cable work for TV-to-soundbar ARC?
The crucial requirement is that the cable connects the TV’s ARC/eARC-labelled port to the soundbar’s matching port and that both devices support the same standard. If the connection is intermittent, try a different known-good HDMI cable and recheck that the cable is not routed through a non-ARC device.
Why does the soundbar turn on but the TV remote cannot change its volume?
Volume control over HDMI normally depends on HDMI-CEC being enabled on the TV and soundbar. Check the television’s CEC feature and the soundbar’s HDMI-control setting; optical and many Bluetooth installations may require the soundbar’s own remote instead.
How do I avoid a delay between the picture and Bluetooth audio?
Bluetooth audio can introduce timing differences that vary by TV, speaker, and codec support. Look for an audio-delay or lip-sync control in the TV or speaker, and use HDMI ARC/eARC or optical if the delay cannot be corrected.
Can I connect a receiver instead of a soundbar?
Yes. Treat the receiver as the external audio system: connect its ARC/eARC, optical, or analogue input to the matching TV output, select the corresponding TV audio output, and choose that input on the receiver. Its speaker configuration and volume controls remain separate from the TV’s menu.
What if my TV has HDMI but no port marked ARC or eARC?
A regular HDMI port normally sends video into the TV rather than returning TV audio to a speaker. Use optical, analogue audio, or Bluetooth if the TV supports one of those outputs; an HDMI-to-audio adapter may work only when it is specifically designed for the TV’s available signal and the speaker’s input.
