The best starting point is your display’s low-latency Game mode, with HDR calibrated at the console rather than forced on every game. Use the display’s native resolution, enable 120Hz and VRR when your console, game, HDMI port and cable path all support them, and turn off motion smoothing and artificial sharpening. This preserves the game’s intended contrast and frame pacing while keeping controls responsive. The exact menu labels differ among televisions and monitors, so treat the settings below as a dependable baseline—not a universal preset.

What are the best TV settings for open-world games?

Set the picture preset to Game, Game Optimizer or the manufacturer’s equivalent low-latency mode. Select the display’s native resolution, choose the highest stable refresh rate supported by the complete setup, enable VRR when every device in the chain supports it, and leave motion interpolation off. On the console, choose HDR On When Supported (PS5) or the equivalent automatic HDR behavior, then run the built-in HDR calibration.

Keep dynamic contrast, black equalizer, shadow boost and sharpness near neutral. Those controls can reveal detail or add punch, but aggressive values flatten dark scenes, clip highlights and make a cinematic game look processed. Disable overscan and use Just Scan, Screen Fit, 1:1 or the equivalent pixel-accurate option.

Recommended baseline

  • Picture mode: Game, Game Optimizer or another low-latency preset.
  • Resolution: Native display resolution where the console or PC supports it.
  • Refresh rate: 120Hz for compatible hardware and games; otherwise use the highest stable rate.
  • VRR: On or Automatic when the game, console, display, port and cable path support it.
  • HDR: HDR Game mode on the display, with console calibration completed afterward.
  • Motion processing: Off by default in Game mode, including frame smoothing and cinematic motion enhancement.
  • Color temperature: Warm or the display’s accurate/neutral preset rather than a strongly blue, cool mode.
  • Overscan: Off; choose the original or pixel-mapped image option.

Should I use Game mode for cinematic games?

Yes. Game mode is designed to reduce extra image processing and expose gaming controls such as HDR, VRR and low-latency behavior. Samsung, Roku, LG and Sony use different menu names, but their gaming presets serve the same basic purpose: shortening the display’s processing path so controller input and on-screen movement stay synchronized.

Game mode does not make a game less cinematic by itself. The cinematic look comes from the game’s art direction, HDR grading, contrast and motion. Turning on television motion interpolation can create a smoother-looking image, but it also changes the intended cadence and can add delay or visual artifacts. Leave it off unless your particular display documents a game-mode option that preserves low latency and you knowingly prefer the altered motion.

Why other presets can be misleading

Movie, Cinema or Filmmaker modes may be accurate for video playback, yet they can retain processing that is undesirable for interactive play. Sports, Dynamic and Vivid modes commonly push brightness, color and edge enhancement beyond the game’s mastered appearance. If you prefer a brighter image in a sunlit room, adjust the display’s backlight or panel-brightness control before raising contrast or color.

How should I configure HDR so it does not look washed out?

Use HDR only when the game and display are actually operating in HDR, and calibrate after selecting the display’s HDR Game mode. On PS5, On When Supported keeps non-HDR games and apps in SDR; Always On converts SDR content to HDR output. The automatic option is the safer baseline because it avoids applying an HDR conversion to every title.

The HDR Gaming Interest Group’s best-practice document states: “HDR displays preserve gradation within the Primary HDR range while in Game mode.” That guidance explains why HDR Game mode matters, but televisions do not all implement HGiG behavior identically. OLED, mini-LED and conventional LCD panels have different brightness limits, black-level behavior and tone-mapping choices, so do not copy a brightness, gamma or tone-mapping number from another model.

PS5 HDR path

  1. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR.
  2. Choose On When Supported unless you deliberately prefer all content converted to HDR.
  3. Switch the television or monitor to its HDR Game mode.
  4. Select Adjust HDR and complete all three calibration screens while viewing the display in that mode.
  5. Launch an HDR game and verify that the display’s on-screen information identifies an HDR signal.

If the image is gray, milky or low in contrast, first confirm that the display really entered HDR Game mode. Then rerun Adjust HDR and check that the console and display agree on RGB range or black level. A mismatch can make blacks appear lifted or crushed even when the panel is functioning normally.

Xbox HDR path

Xbox Series X|S includes an HDR calibration tool alongside its 120Hz, ALLM and VRR controls. Open the console’s display settings, confirm that 4K, HDR, the desired refresh rate and VRR are reported as supported, then run the HDR calibration with the display in HDR Game mode. If the console reports that a capability is unavailable, troubleshoot the HDMI path before changing picture controls.

Should 120Hz and VRR be on for PS5 or Xbox?

Enable them when the game, console, display, HDMI input and cable path all support them. A 120Hz output setting cannot create 120 frames per second in a game that renders at a lower rate, but it can give supported titles a higher-refresh path and make camera motion feel more even. VRR dynamically adjusts the display’s refresh timing to the game’s changing frame delivery, reducing tearing and uneven motion within the display’s supported range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What each setting does

  • 120Hz Output: Allows a compatible console and game to use a 120Hz signal. It does not force every title to render at 120 frames per second.
  • VRR: Matches refresh timing to variable frame delivery. It needs compatible hardware and a valid operating range.
  • ALLM: Lets the console ask the display to switch automatically into its low-latency mode.

Leave VRR on or Automatic for normal use, but disable it temporarily if a title flickers or behaves unpredictably. On PS5, Apply to Unsupported Games is an optional experiment; turn it off when a game shows instability. Use the display’s documented VRR range rather than assuming every refresh rate is valid.

How do I set up a PS5 for 4K HDR, 120Hz and VRR?

PS5 supports HDMI 2.1 and 4K/120Hz output, but the display and the complete signal chain must support the same features. Connect the console directly to the display’s input labeled for 4K/120Hz, HDMI 2.1, Enhanced or VRR, depending on the model.

  1. Connect the PS5 to the appropriate high-bandwidth HDMI input.
  2. On the TV or monitor, activate Game mode or its equivalent low-latency mode.
  3. Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
  4. Set Resolution to Automatic as the general starting point; the console will select the highest resolution the display reports.
  5. Set VRR to On when supported. Use Apply to Unsupported Games only if you accept possible compatibility issues.
  6. Set 120 Hz Output to Automatic or On for a compatible display.
  7. Set ALLM to On when supported.
  8. Set HDR to On When Supported, select HDR Game mode on the display, and run Adjust HDR.
  9. Check the console’s current video-output information to confirm the reported resolution, HDR state, refresh rate and VRR status.

What if PS5 4K/120Hz flickers?

Sony documents Video Transfer Rate options of -1 or -2 as troubleshooting settings. They reduce signal bandwidth and can trade away some 4K/120Hz or color-format combinations, so use them only when the normal setting is unstable. If the problem remains, test the console directly on the display and remove receivers, soundbars, switches and capture devices from the path.

How do I set up an Xbox Series X|S for cinematic games?

Use the Xbox display settings to verify 4K capability, HDR support, refresh rate and VRR before changing the television. Then enable the display’s Game mode and run the Xbox HDR calibration tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect the console to an input identified for 4K/120Hz, Enhanced, HDMI 2.1 or VRR.
  2. Open the Xbox display options and confirm that 4K, HDR, 120Hz and VRR are reported as available where expected.
  3. Select the highest stable refresh rate supported by the display and the current HDMI path.
  4. Enable VRR and ALLM when the display supports them.
  5. Switch the display to HDR Game mode before running HDR calibration.
  6. Recheck the output-information screen after calibration and after installing a game with a 120Hz mode.

Individual Xbox games remain variable: some offer a 120Hz performance mode, some prioritize resolution or visual effects, and some stay at lower frame rates. The console setting exposes the capability; the game decides how to use it.

What makes a game look more cinematic without adding artifacts?

Start with accuracy, not enhancement. Preserve the game’s intended black level and highlight detail, then make only room-specific adjustments.

Use neutral controls first

  • Keep sharpness near the display’s neutral point. Excessive sharpening creates halos around foliage, wires and text.
  • Keep dynamic contrast off or near its accurate default unless you are solving a specific scene problem.
  • Leave black equalizer and shadow boost neutral. Raising them can turn deep blacks gray and reduce atmosphere in night scenes.
  • Disable overscan so the console’s full image reaches the panel without cropping.
  • Choose a warm or accurate color temperature instead of a very cool preset that exaggerates blue tones.

Adapt to the room

In a bright room, increase panel or backlight output rather than pushing color and contrast. In a dark room, avoid excessive shadow lifting; your eyes will adapt after a few minutes, and raised blacks can make an otherwise well-graded scene look flat. Viewing distance also matters: a large television at couch distance benefits from a different size and field of view than a monitor viewed from a desk.

Is a TV or monitor better for cinematic open-world games?

A TV generally suits couch-distance play and a large image, while a monitor is often better at a desk, for close text clarity and high-refresh PC use. Neither category is automatically superior; compare the complete display specification and the way you sit from it.

Model-specific behavior matters. A reference calibration of Sony’s X90L/X90CL, for example, shows that some picture choices can limit 4K signals to 60Hz and that gaming requires separate adjustments. Treat any model guide as specific to that display rather than a universal recipe.

Why am I stuck at 60Hz when my TV supports 120Hz?

The display’s advertised panel rate is only one part of the connection. Check the console’s output-information screen, the selected HDMI input, the cable, and every intermediate device between console and screen.

  1. Move the console to the input labeled 4K/120Hz, HDMI 2.1, Enhanced or VRR.
  2. Confirm Game mode is active; some displays expose high-refresh options only in the gaming path.
  3. Check that the console is set to Automatic or 120Hz output and that the game itself offers a 120Hz mode.
  4. Bypass an AV receiver, soundbar, HDMI switch or capture device that may be limited to 60Hz.
  5. Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if the existing cable is not suitable for the required bandwidth. Do not replace a cable that already carries the target signal reliably.
  6. If PS5 output flickers, test Video Transfer Rate -1 or -2 and recheck the trade-offs in supported formats.

What should I check when VRR flickers or HDR looks gray?

Use this order so you change one variable at a time:

  • Wrong input: Move the console to the display port documented for 4K/120Hz or VRR.
  • Wrong picture mode: Activate Game or Game Optimizer, then HDR Game for HDR content.
  • Calibration order: Select the correct HDR mode before running PS5 Adjust HDR or Xbox HDR calibration.
  • Black-level mismatch: Check that the console RGB range and display black-level setting agree.
  • Signal-chain limit: Remove receivers, soundbars, switches and capture devices to isolate the display.
  • VRR instability: Test VRR off, confirm firmware and port support, and stay inside the documented VRR range.
  • Persistent 4K/120Hz failure: Try a known-suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and Sony’s PS5 Video Transfer Rate troubleshooting options.

Do I need professional calibration?

No. The built-in PS5 and Xbox HDR tools should be the first step, and they are sufficient for most players. A colorimeter or professional service is optional for enthusiasts who want tighter grayscale and color accuracy; it is not required to enable HDR, VRR or 120Hz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Professional work is most useful after the display is physically installed, the room lighting is representative and the correct Game/HDR mode has been selected. Calibration cannot make an unsupported HDMI port carry 4K/120Hz, extend a panel’s physical brightness limit or create VRR in a game that does not support it.

How do I choose a display for cinematic open-world games?

Compare displays by capabilities rather than by brand or a single “cinematic” preset. Give priority to the features that match your distance, room and console.

  • Native resolution appropriate to your viewing distance.
  • HDR support, peak brightness, local dimming and black-level behavior.
  • VRR technology and its supported operating range.
  • HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort bandwidth for the intended resolution and refresh rate.
  • Input latency in the exact Game mode you will use.
  • Whether motion processing remains disabled in Game mode.
  • Screen size, viewing angle, stand or mounting needs and room brightness.

Manufacturer specifications can confirm connectivity and feature support, but they do not establish how every model tone-maps HDR or behaves across firmware versions. Use model-specific calibration references when available, and recheck menus after firmware updates.

How we chose these settings

The recommendations prioritize low latency, preservation of the game’s mastered HDR range, reliable 4K/120Hz signal delivery and stable VRR. They are based on documented Game-mode paths from major display makers, Sony’s PS5 output guidance, Xbox’s display and HDR guidance, HGiG’s HDR gaming practice and model-specific calibration evidence. No single television, monitor or room can establish a universal brightness, gamma or tone-mapping value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use HDR and VRR at the same time?

Usually, yes, when the display, console, game and HDMI path support both features together. If enabling both causes flicker or a missing signal, confirm the correct port and cable, then test VRR separately before changing HDR controls.

Does a 120Hz TV make every open-world game run at 120 frames per second?

No. The panel and console can accept a 120Hz signal, but each game chooses its own rendering mode. Many titles prioritize resolution, lighting or draw distance instead of a 120Hz performance option.

Is an HDMI 2.1 cable required for every PS5 or Xbox connection?

Only when your target mode needs the additional bandwidth and the existing cable cannot carry it reliably. A working cable should not be replaced automatically; verify the console’s reported output first and replace the cable only when it is the limiting component.

Why do dark scenes look brighter after I enable Game mode?

Some displays use different black-level or tone-mapping defaults in Game mode. Check the console and display RGB-range settings, disable shadow-boost controls, and compare the display’s documented HDR Game behavior before raising contrast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I leave VRR enabled for unsupported games?

Treat that as optional. On PS5, the Apply to Unsupported Games setting can improve smoothness in some titles but may introduce instability in others, so turn it off if a game flickers, shows judder or loses a stable signal.
