To sync Xbox game progress, sign in with the same Xbox/Microsoft profile on every device, connect each device to the internet, and launch the same supported game. At startup, let the game finish its “syncing data” check before playing. Xbox compares the local and cloud save timestamps, then uploads the newer local copy, downloads the newer cloud copy, does nothing when both match, or asks you to choose a version when both copies changed.
Cloud saves are not a continuous, instant backup. A game can keep using a local save while you are offline, but that progress cannot reach another device until the original device reconnects and synchronizes. Closing the game while connected gives the service an opportunity to upload your latest session.
What are Xbox cloud saves, and what do they sync?
Xbox connected storage keeps a title’s saved data on the device and synchronizes it with Xbox services when the title is online. After synchronization, the save can be available on another device that runs the same title and uses the same account. Microsoft describes the process as a title-controlled flow: the game decides whether to upload local Game Saves data, download cloud data, take no action, or resolve a conflict.

The save belongs to the Xbox profile’s save namespace, not simply to the console. Signing in with a different profile can make a game appear to have no progress even when another profile has a complete cloud save. The game and its save implementation also matter: a console edition, Windows edition, handheld build, or cloud-gaming session may not share saves unless that title supports the same Xbox connected-storage system.

Cloud synchronization covers saved progress, not every piece of game data. Installed files, graphics settings, mods, and other local configuration are handled separately by the game and platform.
What must be ready before you move a save to another device?
Prepare both devices before launching the game on the destination. The following checks prevent the most common “missing save” scenario, in which the destination downloads an older cloud copy because the original device never uploaded its latest local progress.
- Use one profile: Confirm that the identical Xbox/Microsoft account is active on the console, Windows PC, handheld, or supported cloud-gaming client.
- Use the same supported title: Confirm that both devices run a version and platform combination that shares the game’s Xbox save system. A similarly named edition is not automatically interchangeable.
- Connect before launching: Get the original device online and connect to Xbox services before opening the game. Do the same on the destination device.
- Finish the original session: Save in the game, exit or suspend it while connected, and wait for any synchronization message to finish.
- Keep the destination closed: Do not start the game on a second device while the first device still owns an active save session. Two active sessions can contend for the same save and trigger an ownership lock.
How do I sync Xbox saves to another console, PC, or handheld?
Use this order whenever you are moving progress. The first launch on a new device can take longer because it must initialize the title’s save provider and download the cloud copy.

- Finish playing on the source device. Save normally, make sure the device is online, and exit or suspend the game. Microsoft documents an upload attempt at session end when connectivity is available.
- Wait for the source synchronization. If the game displays “syncing data” or a similar message, leave it open until the operation completes. Do not shut down the device or start the title elsewhere during this step.
- Sign in on the destination. Select the same Xbox/Microsoft profile used on the source device. A different profile has a separate save namespace.
- Connect the destination to the internet. Verify that Xbox services are reachable before starting the game. Avoid beginning the first session in offline mode.
- Launch the identical game. At title start, allow the save check to complete. The destination should download the newer cloud copy if the source uploaded progress successfully.
- Choose deliberately if prompted. A conflict dialog means both local and cloud copies changed. Read the timestamps or progress descriptions and keep the version you intend to use; selecting one copy can overwrite the other.
- Verify the result in-game. Load the expected profile or slot and check the latest mission, level, or checkpoint before continuing.
On an Xbox console
Connect the console to the internet, sign in with the source profile, and close the game after saving. On the second Xbox console, use that same profile and launch the same title. The console may show a synchronization notice before the title’s main menu; wait for it rather than choosing an offline option.
On a Windows PC
Sign in to the Xbox app and Windows with the account that owns the save, connect the PC to the internet, and launch the same supported PC title. The PC and console builds must implement a compatible Xbox save system; ownership of both versions alone does not guarantee that their saves roam between them.
On a handheld or cloud-gaming client
Use the same Xbox profile and a supported title, then remain online while the session starts. Cloud Gaming uses the Xbox service layer, but the list of supported titles and devices can change. If a game does not expose compatible connected storage on that client, its local or platform-specific save will not appear there.

What does Xbox do when local and cloud saves differ?
The title compares the state on the device with the state stored in the cloud. The outcome depends on which copy is newer and whether both copies changed since their last synchronization.

Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation summarizes the possible actions as: “Upload the local Game Saves data; Download cloud data and update the local Game Saves data; Take no action; Resolve any data conflicts.” The exact wording and choices vary by title and platform.
How often do Xbox cloud saves upload progress?
For supported Game Saves APIs, Microsoft documents periodic synchronization attempts about every 30 minutes during gameplay and another upload attempt when the session ends and a connection is available. That interval is not a promise that every title backs up every 30 minutes: games can implement the save flow differently, and a network interruption, suspended session, shutdown, or crash can delay the upload.
For the safest handoff, do not rely on the periodic attempt. Save in the game, remain online, close the title cleanly, and wait for the synchronization message before moving to another device.
Can I play offline and upload the save later?
Yes. A supported title can continue using local Game Saves storage while the device is offline, but the current session remains local until the device reconnects. If you use another device before that reconnection and upload, it can download an older cloud state.

- Sign in with the same profile used for the offline session.
- Launch the game while online and let its synchronization check complete.
- Save and close the game while the connection remains active.
- Only then launch the title on the other device.
If you already started a second device and it shows older progress, stop playing there. Return to the original device first so its newer local save has a chance to upload. Continuing on both devices can create a conflict and make it harder to identify the desired version.

How do I force an Xbox cloud-save sync?
There is no universal “upload now” command exposed by every game. You can prompt the normal synchronization flow by restoring the conditions it requires: one active device, a stable connection, the correct profile, and a clean game exit.
- Close the game on every other Xbox, PC, or handheld.
- On the device with the progress you want, verify the network connection and Xbox profile.
- Open the game, wait for its save check, and confirm that the latest slot or checkpoint is present.
- Save again if the title provides a manual save, then exit or suspend the game while online.
- Wait for the title’s synchronization notice to disappear or report completion.
- Launch the game on the destination device and allow its cloud download to finish before loading.
If the title repeatedly hangs at synchronization, restart the attempt after closing other sessions. A network check, account check, and ownership check address the causes Microsoft identifies for a stalled Game Saves flow; deleting data should be a later recovery step, not the first response.
Why is my Xbox game progress not showing on another device?
Most missing-save cases come from one of five conditions: the source never uploaded, the destination uses another profile, the game versions do not share a save system, the source session is still active, or the destination chose an older local copy.
The destination shows an older save
Return to the device where the newer progress was created. Connect it, close the game cleanly, and wait for the upload. Then launch the game on the destination and wait for the cloud download. Do not create or close a new session on the destination while you are trying to preserve the source copy.
Synchronization hangs or fails
- Check that the device is actually online and connected to Xbox services.
- Confirm the same Xbox/Microsoft profile is active on both devices.
- Close the title everywhere else to release any save-session ownership lock.
- Retry the launch and allow the complete synchronization message to finish.
- If the problem affects only one game, check whether that title supports Xbox connected storage on the platform you are using.
A conflict dialog appears
A conflict means the local and cloud copies both changed. Compare the displayed timestamps, levels, missions, or other progress descriptions. Keep the copy you want; the discarded version may be overwritten, so do not choose quickly if the two versions represent different play sessions.
The wrong local copy keeps loading
When a local file is stale or damaged, removing only that device’s local copy can make the game download the cloud version again. The exact menu differs by title. Deleting the cloud copy is a separate operation and can remove the version you are trying to recover.

How do I restore a cloud save by deleting only the local copy?
Use this recovery only when you have confirmed that the cloud copy is the one you want and the game keeps opening an unwanted local state. Removing local data is potentially destructive to unsynchronized offline progress, so reconnect the device that contains any newer offline play before proceeding.

For Minecraft, Microsoft’s official instructions use this exact console path:
- Open Home > My games & apps > See all.
- Highlight Minecraft and open Menu.
- Select Manage game.
- Open Saved data and select your profile.
- Choose Delete from console, not the option that removes the cloud copy.
- Launch Minecraft while online and wait for the cloud synchronization to restore the local data.
Other games can use different labels or provide their own saved-data screen. Apply the Minecraft path only to Minecraft; if the game’s menu does not clearly distinguish a local deletion from a cloud deletion, stop and consult that title’s documentation rather than guessing.
What are the limits of cross-device Xbox saves?
Cloud saves roam only where the same title and save implementation are supported. A game can have separate console and PC versions, separate editions, or no Xbox connected-storage support at all. In those cases, signing in with the same account does not create a compatible save automatically.
- Same profile: The account must match exactly.
- Same title and compatible version: A similarly named game or different edition may use a different save format.
- Supported platform: Console, Windows, handheld, and cloud-gaming support can differ by title.
- Online synchronization: Upload and download require connectivity; offline play remains local until reconnection.
- Service and rollout changes: Cloud Gaming availability, supported devices, menu labels, and indicators can change over time.
Before promising a cross-device continuation, check the game’s platform support and whether its publisher implements Xbox connected storage for both versions. Xbox Cloud Gaming uses the Xbox service layer, but it does not make every game or device combination interoperable.

How can I tell whether a save has synchronized?
Use the game’s own synchronization message first. Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator for PC and handheld experiences on January 21, 2026, giving players visibility into cloud-save status where the feature has rolled out. When the indicator is present, use it to confirm that the latest progress is synchronized; its availability and labels can vary by device, game, and rollout stage.

On consoles and in games without the indicator, the practical confirmation is a clean online exit followed by a successful launch on the destination. Load the expected save only after the destination reports that synchronization has completed.
