Yes. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows 11, so you install the normal Windows version of Steam, sign in, and download games exactly as you would on a desktop PC. The Xbox full-screen experience and Armoury Crate SE can remain installed alongside Steam, and both can surface games from multiple storefronts. To carry progress between the Ally X and another computer, enable Steam Cloud globally and for each supported game, let Steam finish syncing before you switch devices, and resolve any timestamp conflict before launching. This guide covers the complete setup, save migration, storage choices, troubleshooting, and a practical desk or TV configuration.
What do you need before installing Steam?
Start with the Windows and hardware baseline that ASUS ships on the 2025 ROG Xbox Ally X. It includes Windows 11 Home, an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of LPDDR5X-8000 memory, a 1TB M.2 2280 SSD, Wi-Fi 6E, two USB-C ports with DisplayPort, a UHS-II microSD reader, and an 80Wh battery. The device is a Windows PC in handheld form, not a console that restricts you to one store.
- Complete the first-run Windows setup and connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used on the handheld.
- Have the Steam account credentials and, if enabled, its authenticator available.
- Keep enough free space for the game, updates, shader caches, and temporary installation files. Large modern games can need substantially more space than their initial download size.
- Check the game’s Windows requirements, controller support, secondary-launcher requirements, and anti-cheat policy before committing to a long download.
ASUS states that the Ally supports major launchers, including Steam, Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Launcher, Ubisoft Connect, the EA App, and GOG Galaxy. Downloaded games are automatically imported into Armoury Crate SE’s Game Library, although a title can be added manually if detection fails.
How do you update the Ally X before installing Steam?
Updating first prevents avoidable launcher and driver problems. Windows updates and ASUS firmware or driver updates are managed in different places, so check both.

- Finish Windows setup, connect to Wi-Fi, and leave the Ally X plugged in if a large update is pending.
- Open Windows Settings, choose Windows Update, install every available update, and restart when prompted. Repeat the check until Windows reports that the device is up to date.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and select Update Center. Apply available ASUS driver, firmware, and utility updates, then restart again if requested.
- After the restart, open the Xbox full-screen experience and confirm that the device is responsive before installing a large game.
Do not interrupt a firmware update by powering off the handheld. If an update appears stalled, keep the charger connected and allow the process time to complete before forcing a restart.
How do you install Steam on the ROG Xbox Ally X?
You can install Steam from the Xbox full-screen experience or from the Windows desktop. The resulting client is the standard Windows Steam application.
- Open the Xbox full-screen experience and go to Library, then My Apps.
- Choose the PC storefronts section and select Steam if it is listed.
- Follow the installer prompts, choose a destination with adequate free space, and allow Steam to create its Start-menu and desktop shortcuts if you want them.
- If Steam is not listed, switch to the Windows desktop, open Microsoft Edge, and download the Windows client from Steam’s official website. Run the installer, then return to the handheld interface.
- Launch Steam and sign in to the account that owns your games. Complete any Steam Guard verification.
Steam, Xbox, and Armoury Crate SE can coexist. The Xbox experience is a controller-oriented shell, Steam remains the storefront and game manager, and Armoury Crate SE provides ASUS device controls and its own library view. You do not need to uninstall one launcher to use another.

Steam installs games through its Library. The internal SSD is the straightforward default; a compatible microSD card can expand capacity when the SSD is full.
- In Steam, open Library and select the game you own.
- Click Install. When Steam asks for a library location, choose the internal 1TB SSD or a Steam library configured on the microSD card.
- Review the required space and the destination, then start the download.
- Keep the Ally X connected to power for a large installation. Steam may continue with shader-cache creation, DirectX components, redistributables, or a first-run launcher after the download reaches 100 percent.
- Launch the game once from Steam. Complete the game’s own account sign-in, graphics setup, and controller prompts before closing it normally.
The first launch is important because it creates configuration files and confirms that any secondary launcher or anti-cheat component can initialize. A game that is installed but never launched may not yet appear correctly in every aggregated library.

Internal SSD or microSD: which is better?
The Ally X has a 1TB internal SSD and a UHS-II-capable microSD reader. ASUS says games may be installed on compatible external storage. Use the following trade-offs rather than assuming that every card behaves like the internal drive.
| Factor | Internal 1TB SSD | Compatible microSD card |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Fixed at the supplied 1TB, shared with Windows and applications | Expandable; capacity depends on the card you purchase |
| Load-time consistency | Most consistent option for operating-system and game access | Depends on the card’s sustained performance and condition |
| Portability | Installed inside the Ally X; moving it requires reinstalling or cloning storage | Can be moved between compatible devices, subject to library and file-system setup |
| Reinstallation | Convenient while the game remains on the device | Useful for keeping a large library available, but a failed or removed card makes those games unavailable until restored |
Choose a high-capacity UHS-II microSDXC card from a seller with a clear return policy, and check its sustained performance rather than relying only on a peak sequential-speed number. Keep Windows and frequently played games on the SSD when consistent access matters; use the card for capacity expansion and less frequently played titles.

After the first launch, the title should be discoverable by the Xbox aggregated library and/or Armoury Crate SE. If it is missing from Armoury Crate SE, add it manually.
- Open Armoury Crate SE and go to Game Library.
- Select Manage Library (the label can be shown as the library-management control in the current Armoury Crate SE build).
- Scan the Steam library location or use the manual add option to select the game’s executable or shortcut.
- Save the entry and verify that its artwork, launch command, and controller profile point to the correct game.
The Xbox full-screen experience can aggregate installed games from different PC storefronts, but aggregation is a convenience layer; Steam still handles Steam ownership, updates, cloud synchronization, and launch options.
How do you enable Steam Cloud saves?
Steam Cloud stores supported game settings, save games, profile statistics, and other user-specific data on Steam’s servers. It is not automatic for every title: Steam Cloud must be enabled globally, enabled for the individual game, and supported by that game’s developer.

Turn on the global setting
- Open Steam and select Steam in the top-left menu.
- Choose Settings, then Cloud.
- Turn on Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.
Check the game-level setting
- Open Library, right-click the game, and choose Properties.
- Stay on General and find Cloud Synchronization.
- Make sure synchronization is enabled for that title.
A Steam Cloud logo on a game’s store page indicates service use, but the developer decides which files are uploaded. A game may synchronize settings while excluding a particular save type. When behavior is unexpected, check the game’s documentation for its supported save locations and cloud limitations.

How do you move Steam saves from another PC to the Ally X?
For a game with Steam Cloud support, the normal migration is simply to let the old computer upload and the Ally X download the save. For a game without Cloud support, you must identify and copy the developer’s save files yourself.
Cloud-supported migration
- On the old computer, connect to the internet and launch Steam.
- Exit the game normally rather than terminating it from Task Manager. Wait for Steam’s sync indicator to finish.
- On the Ally X, sign in to the same Steam account and open the game. Allow Steam to download the cloud data before launching.
- Start the game and confirm that the expected profile or save appears. Exit normally so the Ally X can upload any new progress.
Do not treat an online Steam session as proof that the latest local save has been uploaded. The game must close cleanly and Steam must complete its synchronization.
Manual migration for games without Steam Cloud
Steam’s default Windows cloud-data directory is C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata, but a title without Cloud support may store saves somewhere else. A common example is C:Users[Windows user name]DocumentsMy Games; the exact folder is chosen by the developer.
- Close the game and Steam on the source computer.
- Consult the game’s developer documentation to identify the exact save folder and whether the files are encrypted or tied to a profile.
- Copy the save folder to an external drive or secure network location.
- Install the game on the Ally X and launch it once, then exit. This creates the destination folders and configuration files.
- Close Steam and copy the backed-up saves into the documented destination, preserving the folder structure.
- Restart Steam and launch the game. If the save is not recognized, restore the backup and recheck the game’s version, account, and required profile identifiers.
Never overwrite the only copy of a working save. Keep the original backup until the Ally X has loaded the correct progress and you have exited normally.

What should you do when Steam Cloud reports a conflict?
A conflict means local and cloud files changed in different places without a completed synchronization. Steam presents the available versions and their timestamps; compare those times before choosing.
- Do not click Play while the conflict is unresolved.
- Read the local and cloud timestamps and identify which one contains the progress you intend to keep.
- Choose the corresponding version in Steam’s conflict dialog.
- Wait for Steam to finish downloading or uploading the selected files.
- Launch the game, verify the save in-game, then exit normally to create a clean synchronized state.
Offline play postpones synchronization until Steam is online again. If you played on the Ally X while offline and then used the desktop, both devices can have newer local saves. Put the device with the desired progress online first, allow its upload to complete, and only then resolve the other device’s prompt.
If Steam says it cannot sync, fix the network or client problem before selecting Play. Ignoring the warning can create a conflict and lead to lost data or progress.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you repair a Steam game that will not launch?
Use a short, ordered recovery process so you do not confuse a damaged installation with a cloud or compatibility problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Exit the game and restart Steam.
- Restart Windows on the Ally X.
- Check that Steam is online and that any required secondary launcher is signed in.
- Open Steam Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification and allow Steam to reacquire missing or damaged files.
- Launch again and complete any first-run redistributable or anti-cheat installation.
Steam notes that one or more local configuration files can fail verification normally; that result does not automatically mean the game is corrupted. If the symptom is a cloud error rather than missing textures, crashes, or incomplete content, resolve synchronization first instead of repeatedly verifying files.

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
- Game is absent from a library: run Armoury Crate SE’s library management and add the executable or scan the correct Steam library folder.
- Save is missing: confirm the same Steam account, check the game’s per-title Cloud setting, and investigate the developer’s local save path.
- Cloud conflict appears: compare timestamps and choose deliberately; do not launch until the choice has synchronized.
- Textures or files are missing: use Verify integrity of game files, then restart Steam.
- Controller does not work: check the game’s controller support, Steam Input configuration, and any launcher-specific input mode.
- Game is blocked by anti-cheat: read the title’s current Windows and anti-cheat policy; compatibility is decided per game, not guaranteed by the Ally X’s general Windows support.
- Performance or storage warning: confirm free space for updates and shader caches, and move the installation to the SSD if the microSD card is not providing consistent access.
How do you connect the Ally X to a monitor or TV?
The Ally X’s two USB-C ports provide DisplayPort output. For a desk or TV setup, connect a USB-C dock that can deliver up to 130W, then attach the display, keyboard, mouse, network cable, and charger to the dock as appropriate.
- Choose a dock rated for the Ally X’s required power delivery; ASUS recommends the ROG Bulwark Dock (2025) DG300 or another 130W-capable model.
- Connect the dock to the Ally X with a USB-C cable rated for the dock’s display and power requirements.
- Connect the monitor or TV, then select the correct input on the display.
- Attach keyboard, mouse, Ethernet, or other peripherals and confirm that Windows detects them.
- In Windows display settings, choose whether the external screen mirrors the handheld, extends the desktop, or becomes the main display.
Check compatibility and power delivery for the exact dock model. A dock that provides video but insufficient power can leave the handheld charging slowly or discharging during demanding games.
What are the practical limits of Steam on this Windows handheld?
Windows gives the Ally X broad storefront coverage and access to desktop applications, mods, and services. Xbox describes these handhelds as Windows devices that can download games from favorite storefronts, run apps such as Discord, watch streams, and use mods directly from the Xbox experience. That flexibility also means more desktop-style variables than a closed console: separate launchers, account sign-ins, update services, controller modes, and title-specific anti-cheat rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Steam Cloud is equally title-specific. The service cannot upload files that a developer does not expose, and it cannot reconcile two independently changed saves without asking you to choose. A reliable routine—close the game normally, wait for the sync indicator, and resolve conflicts by timestamp—prevents most avoidable migration errors.
Which setup should you choose?
| Your priority | Recommended setup | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest, simplest installation | Steam library on the internal SSD | One storage device, consistent access, and no removable-card dependency |
| Maximum game capacity | Internal SSD for Windows and active games plus a compatible UHS-II microSD card for additional titles | Expands storage without replacing the supplied drive |
| Switching between desktop and handheld | Steam Cloud enabled globally and per supported game | Automates supported save transfers when each session ends cleanly |
| Games without Cloud support | Documented manual backups before moving devices | Developer-selected save paths require deliberate copying |
| Desk or TV gaming | 130W-capable USB-C dock with DisplayPort accessories | Provides display, peripherals, and charging through one connection when compatible |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use one Steam library on both the Ally X and my desktop PC?
Yes. Install the games on each device or configure a shared storage location that both systems can access, then sign in with the same Steam account. Ownership follows the account, while installed files and local settings remain specific to each Windows installation.
Will every Steam game show up in the Xbox full-screen interface?
Most installed PC games can be aggregated, but detection is not guaranteed for every launcher, shortcut, or custom executable. If a title is missing, add its executable through Armoury Crate SE’s library-management controls and keep Steam as the launch and update manager.
Can I recover an older save after choosing the wrong cloud version?
Recovery depends on whether an older local or backup copy still exists. Stop playing, preserve any remaining save folders, and check the game’s documented backup or local-save locations before allowing more synchronization to overwrite files.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a microSD card need to be UHS-II to install Steam games?
The Ally X reader supports UHS-II cards and backward-compatible cards, and ASUS allows game installation on external storage. A faster, genuine card with strong sustained performance is preferable, but capacity, reliability, and return support matter as much as the advertised peak speed.
