Install all three services as Windows applications on the Acer Predator Atlas 8. The handheld runs Windows 11 and starts in Xbox mode, so you can install Steam and Epic from Xbox mode → Library → My Apps → Download now, or leave Xbox mode and run the normal Windows installers. Game Pass uses the Xbox PC app; update it through Microsoft Store before signing in and choosing a plan.
The steps below cover first-boot updates, storage formatting, offline play, cloud limits, launcher integration, and the quickest ways back to the Windows desktop when a store tile does not work.
What software does the Acer Predator Atlas 8 use?
The Atlas 8 is a Windows 11 handheld, not a separate console operating system. A retail-unit setup video published by 128KB on 8 October 2026 shows the device booting directly into Xbox mode, Microsoft’s controller-focused full-screen shell. Microsoft describes Xbox mode as a “console inspired, dedicated gaming experience” in which Windows opens a gaming home app and runs games full screen.
The reviewed Atlas 8 configuration had an Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor, 24 GB of RAM and a 1 TB SSD. Those figures describe that reviewed configuration, not every Atlas 8 SKU; Acer’s official specification sheet was not available for confirmation. The handheld also includes Acer Predator Sense, with Quiet, Balanced, Turbo and Manual TDP modes and a dedicated quick-menu button.

Steam is not shown as preinstalled in that setup. Instead, Xbox mode offers a Download now tile for Steam, Epic Games Store and several other launchers. You can still install each program in the conventional Windows desktop.
What should you do before installing any launcher?
Complete updates first. An outdated Xbox app or Windows build can produce grey tiles and inactive Install buttons, while a graphics-driver update may restart the handheld into Xbox mode again.
- Leave Xbox mode once. Swipe up from the bottom and choose the Windows desktop, or open the Predator Sense quick menu, select the cog and choose Exit Xbox mode.
- Run Windows Update repeatedly. Open Start → Settings → Windows Update, install everything offered, restart when requested, and check again until no further updates remain.
- Update Microsoft Store. Open Microsoft Store, select Library, choose Downloads, and select Check for updates. Repeat until the queue is empty. This updates the bundled Xbox app as well.
- Update Predator Sense. Open Predator Sense and run Live Update.
- Install Intel Driver & Support Assistant. It is not preinstalled. Download it from Intel’s official site, let it install certified graphics drivers, and restart. For a newly released game, manually check Intel’s Arc G3 Extreme driver page for any additional game-day patch.
- Optional cleanup. Remove unused Windows applications from Settings → Apps → Installed apps (for example, Copilot, OneDrive or Office 365) rather than using untrusted “optimizer” utilities. Changing display scale from the default 200% to 150% is a usability preference, not a requirement.
Return to Xbox mode by restarting, pressing Win + F11, or enabling it through Settings → Gaming → Xbox mode. Microsoft requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or later for the current Xbox-mode experience; the Xbox PC app itself requires Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher.

Use the Xbox PC app. It is the native Windows client for discovering, downloading and playing PC Game Pass games. Install it from Microsoft Store by searching for Xbox, or download Microsoft’s installer at https://aka.ms/xboxinstaller. Microsoft’s help page is https://support.xbox.com/help/games-apps/game-setup-and-play/how-to-get-xbox-app.
- From the desktop, open Microsoft Store and update the Xbox app. If the app is missing, use the installer link above.
- Launch Xbox and sign in with the Microsoft account that will own the subscription and games.
- Select your profile picture and confirm the subscription status. If the Atlas 8 package includes a trial, look in Microsoft Store → Library → Included with device → Xbox Game Pass → Claim. A trial specific to every Atlas 8 SKU has not been confirmed, so do not assume one is included.
- Before downloading, open Profile picture → Settings → General → New game installs and choose the internal SSD or an NTFS-formatted extra drive.
- Choose a game, select Install, select a drive if prompted, and allow the Xbox app to finish. Large games can take considerable space: Switchblade Gaming reports Call of Duty at more than 130 GB and many modern AAA games at about 60–80 GB.
Which Game Pass plan suits a Windows handheld?
Microsoft’s US storefront copy checked on 29 October 2026 lists the following. Promotional wording shown by Microsoft is $1 for the first 14 days where noted, followed by the recurring monthly price.

For an Atlas 8 owner who wants local Windows downloads, PC Game Pass is the least expensive listed option and includes day-one PC releases plus EA Play. Premium costs $1 more and adds a cross-device library and 10 cloud hours. Ultimate is for players who specifically want day-one access across the broader catalog, the listed extras and 15 monthly cloud hours. You do not need Ultimate merely because the device is a handheld.
Should you download Game Pass games or stream them?
Download a game when you will travel, have unreliable Wi-Fi or need the lowest possible input delay. Cloud play avoids a large installation, but it requires an internet connection and a plan with cloud hours; PC Game Pass does not include cloud gaming. Xbox also offers cloud play through the Xbox app and xbox.com/play, subject to supported regions, devices and the plan’s monthly allowance.

Downloaded titles can generally be started offline after the license has been validated. Switchblade Gaming, citing an Xbox Wire explanation, says the app checks the license approximately every 30 days. Online multiplayer, cloud saves that have not synchronized and cloud-streamed games still require internet access.
How do I install Steam on an Acer Predator handheld?
The fastest Atlas 8 route is the Xbox-mode catalog. The Windows desktop route works on any Windows 11 build and is useful if the My Apps tile is unavailable.
Install Steam from Xbox mode
- Press Win + F11 if necessary to enter Xbox mode.
- Open Library. If My Apps is not visible, open the top-left menu and go to Settings → Library and extensions, then enable Display my apps in library.
- Open My Apps, select the Steam tile and choose Download now.
- Complete the Windows installer, accept the defaults unless you have a specific drive plan, and sign in to Steam.
- Return to Xbox mode. Installed Steam games can appear in the combined My Games library. If artwork looks generic or low-resolution, replacing it is optional and has no effect on launching games.
Install Steam from the Windows desktop
- Exit Xbox mode with Win + F11, a bottom-up swipe followed by Windows desktop, or the Predator Sense quick menu’s Exit Xbox mode command.
- Open a browser and visit Valve’s official download page: https://store.steampowered.com/about/.
- Select Install Steam. The Windows installer is https://cdn.akamai.steamstatic.com/client/installer/SteamSetup.exe.
- Run SteamSetup.exe, install the client, and sign in.
Valve describes Steam as a destination for playing, discussing and creating games. Its About page lists nearly 30,000 games, a client available in 28 languages and more than 100 payment methods across over 35 currencies. The page’s online and playing-now counters are live snapshots, not permanent user totals.

How do I install Epic Games Store?
Epic is also available as a Download now tile in Atlas 8 Xbox mode, or as a normal Windows installer from Epic’s official page.

- Enter Xbox mode and open Library → My Apps.
- Select Epic, then choose Download now.
- Run the installer, sign in to your Epic account and select the default library location or another drive.
Install Epic from the desktop
- Exit Xbox mode and open https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/download.
- Select the Install button at the top of the page, as Epic’s download FAQ instructs.
- Run the downloaded Windows installer and sign in.
After installation, Epic games can be surfaced in Xbox mode’s combined library alongside Xbox, Steam, GOG and EA entries. If a title does not appear immediately, launch it once from Epic, close the launcher, then restart Xbox mode so the library can refresh.
How do I install Game Pass games to a microSD card?
Format the card as NTFS before selecting it in the Xbox app. An exFAT card may work for ordinary Windows files but does not appear as an Xbox install target according to the documented Windows-handheld behavior.
- Back up anything on the card; formatting erases it.
- In Windows, open File Explorer → This PC, right-click the card, choose Format, select NTFS, and confirm.
- Open Xbox, select your profile picture, then Settings → General → New game installs.
- Select the newly formatted card. When installing an individual title, use Choose a drive if the app asks for a location.
The Atlas 8’s card-slot speed class was not documented in the available material, so do not assume a particular UHS-I or UHS-II rating. Keep frequently launched games on the internal SSD and use the extra drive for a larger backlog when its performance and available space meet your needs.
How do I keep Steam and Epic visible in Xbox mode?
Xbox mode can act as a single controller-first front end. Microsoft’s Xbox PC app says its library can bring together Xbox, Game Pass and installed games from other PC storefronts.

- Open Xbox mode and go to Library → My Apps.
- Enable Display my apps in library if the section is hidden.
- Keep the Steam and Epic tiles installed and launch each service once so Windows registers its games.
- Use My Games for the aggregated list. Use My Apps when you need to update a launcher, Microsoft Store, Game Bar, Windows Settings or Intel Driver & Support Assistant without leaving Xbox mode.
You can link supported networks from the Xbox app’s account-linking controls, but linking is optional; the launchers remain independent accounts and stores. Game Pass titles that lack a convenient shortcut can be added to Steam with a Windows-only utility such as UWPHook or by selecting a visible executable under C:XboxGames. Cloud-streamed titles do not provide a local executable to add.
How do I exit Xbox mode and return to Windows?
Press Win + F11 to toggle Xbox mode. You can also press Win + Tab to open Task View, swipe up from the bottom on the touchscreen and choose the desktop, or open the Predator Sense quick menu, select the cog and choose Exit Xbox mode.
To change the behavior permanently, open Start → Settings → Gaming → Xbox mode. Under Choose home app, select Xbox to keep the console-style shell, choose Enter Xbox mode on startup if desired, or select None to disable it. The Xbox button or Game Bar can open the task switcher; use the D-pad or stick to move, A to focus and X to close.

- Grey Steam, Epic or Xbox tile: update Windows, Microsoft Store and the Xbox app, then restart. A stale bundled Xbox app is a documented cause of grey tiles and broken Install buttons.
- My Apps is missing: enable Settings → Library and extensions → Display my apps in library.
- Game Pass cannot see the card: verify that it is NTFS, reconnect it, and reselect it under Xbox → Profile → Settings → General → New game installs. exFAT is not offered as an Xbox target.
- Touch controls are awkward: use a USB-C hub with a keyboard and mouse during installers. Touch and the on-screen keyboard remain available without accessories.
- Games launch but performance mode is wrong: open Predator Sense and switch among Quiet, Balanced, Turbo or Manual TDP. The quick menu also exposes brightness, volume, refresh rate, resolution, fan control, an FPS overlay, an FPS limiter and the onboard-controller toggle.
- A driver update returns you to Xbox mode: this can happen after graphics installation. Use Win + F11 or the Predator Sense exit command to reach the desktop again.
Can you install all three services without leaving the controller interface?
Yes. Once Windows and Store updates are complete, Xbox mode’s Library → My Apps → Download now tiles provide the shortest path for Steam and Epic, while the Xbox PC app supplies Game Pass. Leave Xbox mode enabled for a console-style home screen, or set its home app to None when you prefer the standard Windows desktop.

Does the Atlas 8 include a Game Pass trial in the box?
A trial was not confirmed for every Atlas 8 SKU. Check Microsoft Store → Library → Included with device after signing in; only claim an offer that actually appears for your device.

Can I use a Bluetooth or USB controller with Xbox mode?
Yes. Xbox mode is designed for controller navigation, and the Predator Sense quick menu includes an onboard-controller toggle for using an external pad. Pair or connect the controller in Windows before launching a game.
Why did my Game Pass download stop after I changed drives?
The Xbox app associates new installs with the drive selected under Profile → Settings → General. Reopen that setting, select the intended NTFS drive, then retry the installation; an individual game may also expose Choose a drive.
Can I stream a game I already own without installing it?
Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream supported games, including select owned titles, through the Xbox app or xbox.com/play. Availability depends on the title, region, device and a plan that includes remaining cloud hours.

What happens to downloaded Game Pass games if my subscription ends?
The files can remain on the drive, but the Xbox license must be valid for the account before the game will launch. Renewing the subscription or purchasing the title restores an eligible license; cloud-streamed access does not create an offline copy.
