To enable remote administration on a Rust server, add +rcon.web 1, +rcon.password, and +rcon.port to the server’s launch command, restart the server, allow that port over TCP, and connect with a WebRCON client. Set the port explicitly rather than relying on a default, because published guidance disagrees about which port Rust uses by default.

Keep the RCON port private behind a firewall, VPN, or IP allow-list: WebRCON puts the password in the connection URL, so exposing the service directly to the internet creates avoidable risk.
What RCON does on a Rust server
RCON (remote console) lets an administrator send console commands to a running Rust server without joining the game or opening a local console session. It is useful for moderation, scheduled maintenance, player management, configuration checks, and emergency actions when nobody with physical or shell access is available.
Rust’s current recommended remote method is WebRCON, which uses a WebSocket connection. The three launch options work together:

+rcon.web 1selects the web/WebSocket remote-connect method.+rcon.passwordsets the password clients must provide.+rcon.portchooses the TCP port on which RCON listens.
Leaving out any one of these can produce a server that starts but cannot be reached by the client you intend to use. An empty password is both unusable for normal authentication and unsafe, so always set a non-empty, unique value.
Understand Rust’s ports before changing anything
Do not confuse the RCON port with the port players use to join the server. Rust uses separate services and protocols:

The game port can remain reachable over UDP while RCON stays restricted to a management network. Opening the game port does not open RCON, and opening RCON over UDP will not work.
Choose an RCON port explicitly
Published references do not agree on Rust’s implicit RCON port. The official wiki describes the default as the same as server.port (normally 28015), while several community guides use 28016, one higher than the game port. Treat the default as unresolved rather than guessing.

The number 28016 is an example, not a universal requirement. Pick an available TCP port, put the same number in the launch command, firewall rule, and client, then verify the listening socket after restart.
Prepare the server and credentials
Use a strong, parser-friendly password
Generate a long, unique password that is not used for the game panel, operating-system account, or any other service. Replace every sample value such as letmein; examples in documentation are public and must never be used on a live server.

Some desktop clients parse connection fields poorly when a password contains characters such as # or a double quote. If a correctly entered password produces a red connection status, check those characters first. You can set a long password using letters, numbers, and punctuation that your client accepts, then test the connection again. Never solve a parsing problem by shortening the password or reusing an old one.
Record the values you will need
- The server’s public or private management IP address, depending on where the client runs.
- The exact RCON TCP port selected with
+rcon.port. - The RCON password, stored in a password manager rather than in chat or a shared document.
- The IP ranges that should be allowed by the firewall, if you can restrict access by source.
Add WebRCON to the launch command
Modify the command or startup configuration that actually starts RustDedicated. Do not create a second command that the host never runs. Append the three options to the existing command, preserving your current server identity, world, map, save, and performance settings.

Generic launch-command example
RustDedicated -batchmode [your-existing-options] +rcon.port 28016 +rcon.password <your-long-unique-password> +rcon.web 1The bracketed portion represents options already used by your server and is not literal syntax. If your password contains shell-sensitive characters, quote it according to the shell or service manager that launches the server. Keep the password out of public scripts and screenshots.
Step-by-step
- Stop the Rust server cleanly so the startup configuration can be changed without two instances competing for the same ports.
- Open the launch script, service definition, container command, or host-panel startup field that is used on every restart.
- Add
+rcon.web 1to select WebRCON. - Add
+rcon.passwordfollowed by the complete password. - Add
+rcon.portfollowed by the dedicated TCP port you selected. - Save the configuration and start the server.
- Wait for startup to complete, then inspect the server log or socket list to confirm that the chosen TCP port is listening.
Option order is not important, but spelling is: use the plus sign, the exact option names, and the value 1 for rcon.web. A typo can leave the server running with no usable WebRCON endpoint.

Create an inbound firewall rule for the RCON port using TCP, not UDP. Limit the rule’s source to your office, home, VPN, or administration IP addresses whenever possible. The game UDP port remains a separate rule.
- Identify the host-level firewall and any cloud-provider or router firewall in front of the server.
- Add an inbound rule for the exact RCON port, protocol TCP.
- Restrict the source to trusted addresses or a private VPN subnet.
- Apply the rule at every network layer that filters traffic; a host rule cannot override a blocked cloud or router rule.
- Do not create a broad rule for all TCP ports just to make testing easier.
- After the server starts, test from the same network where the RCON client will run and confirm that the port is reachable.
WebRCON sends the password in the connection URL without encryption at the protocol level. A public, unrestricted RCON port therefore exposes both a powerful administrative service and credentials to interception or abuse. A firewall allow-list or VPN is the minimum sensible protection; do not treat an obscure port number as security.

Connect with RustAdmin
RustAdmin is a desktop client that can connect to a Rust WebRCON endpoint. Use its configuration screen rather than a legacy RCON mode.
- Open the client’s Configuration tab.
- Enter the server IP address or hostname.
- Enter the exact RCON port from
+rcon.port, not automatically the game port. - Enter the RCON password.
- Set the server type to WebRcon.
- Save or connect, then check the status indicator and console output.
If the status bar turns red immediately, recheck the address, port, password, and server type. A password containing # or " can also break parsing in some configurations; test with a long password that avoids those characters while retaining strong entropy. If the client times out, investigate the TCP firewall path before changing credentials.
Connect with Facepunch’s browser client
Facepunch’s WebRCON project provides a browser-based client that connects over WebSockets. The hosted client is available at https://facepunch.github.io/webrcon.
- Open the hosted client in a browser that can reach the server’s management network.
- Provide the server address, the explicitly configured RCON port, and the password when prompted.
- Start the connection and wait for the console interface to become available.
- Run a harmless status or information command first to confirm that the session is connected before performing administrative actions.
A browser page is not the same thing as an HTTP control panel. WebRCON is a WebSocket service; typing an http:// address into a browser does not prove that the endpoint is configured correctly. Use a WebSocket-capable client and protect the network path.

Verify that the server is really listening
A successful process launch does not guarantee that RCON is enabled. Verification should cover the configuration, socket, and authentication layers:
- Configuration: confirm the running startup command contains all three options and the intended values.
- Socket: confirm the host has a listening TCP socket on the selected RCON port.
- Network: confirm the firewall and any upstream security group allow that TCP port from your client network.
- Protocol: select WebRcon in the client; a legacy protocol setting may fail even when the port is open.
- Authentication: enter the exact password, including case and punctuation.
If the server is restarted by a service manager or host panel, verify the generated command after every configuration change. Editing a temporary shell command will not help if an automated manager replaces it at the next reboot.
Troubleshoot common connection failures
Connection times out
- Check that the server is online and that the chosen RCON port is listening.
- Confirm the client uses TCP and the exact value of
+rcon.port. - Check host, cloud, router, and VPN firewall rules in that order.
- Make sure you are testing the correct address: a private address works only from the same private network or VPN.
- Check whether a managed host assigned a different port or hides RCON behind its panel.
Connection is refused
- The process may be running without
+rcon.web 1or may have failed to bind the selected port. - Another service may already occupy the port; choose an unused port and update every dependent setting.
- The server may still be restarting. Wait for the normal startup sequence before testing.
Authentication fails
- Re-enter the password exactly; it is case-sensitive.
- Ensure the client is connecting to the intended server and port rather than a different instance on the same host.
- Check that the launch command did not truncate or reinterpret shell-special characters.
- If RustAdmin displays a red status immediately, test a long parser-friendly password without
#or double quotes, then replace any temporary credential with a final unique one.
The client connects but commands do not work
- Confirm the client is set to WebRcon rather than a legacy RCON protocol.
- Check that you connected to the administrative endpoint, not the game or query port.
- Review server logs for rejected commands or permission errors and use commands supported by the running Rust server version.
It worked locally but not remotely
Local success proves only that the service and credentials work on that network. Remote failure usually indicates routing, an upstream firewall, an allow-list that excludes your current IP, or a managed host’s port mapping. Test through the intended VPN or management network instead of exposing the port publicly as a diagnostic shortcut.
Managed-host considerations
Control panels often generate the launch command and may allocate ports dynamically. A provider’s RCON port is not necessarily the conventional value and may not equal the game port. Before changing anything:
- Find the host’s complete port list or network settings.
- Identify the RCON port the provider exposes to external clients, if any.
- Use the provider’s startup-variable field for
rcon.web,rcon.password, andrcon.portwhen direct command editing is unavailable. - Apply the provider’s firewall or allow-list settings as well as any local client-network restrictions.
- Restart from the panel and verify the effective values in the startup log.
Some managed services do not expose RCON at all or proxy it through their own dashboard. In that case, an ordinary public-port rule cannot create access that the host has intentionally hidden; use the provider’s documented method.
Security checklist for ongoing operation
- Use a long, unique RCON password and rotate it when an administrator leaves or the credential may have been exposed.
- Keep
+rcon.web 1enabled only for the WebRCON clients you actually use. - Restrict inbound TCP access by source IP or VPN rather than allowing the entire internet.
- Do not publish the password in launch scripts stored in public repositories, screenshots, logs, or support tickets.
- Separate RCON credentials from game-panel and operating-system credentials.
- Monitor connection and command logs for unexpected administration activity.
- After changing the port or password, restart the server and update every authorized client and firewall rule.
- Remove temporary testing rules as soon as connectivity is confirmed.
WebRCON and future compatibility
Facepunch’s WebRCON project indicates that web RCON is intended to become the default mode eventually and that the older protocol will be removed at some point, although no removal date is established. Configuring WebRCON now avoids building new administration procedures around a legacy protocol. Client developers and server owners should still check the current Rust documentation and the client version they operate, because third-party guides can become stale as startup options and hosting panels change.
