To set up PlayStation Portal Remote Play, enable Remote Play on your PS5, sign in to the same PlayStation account on both devices, connect Portal to Wi-Fi, and start Remote Play. For a steadier session, test near the PS5 first, then check speed, Wi-Fi signal, congestion, and software. PlayStation lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the minimum and recommends at least 15 Mbps in each direction for a better play experience; neither figure guarantees a stable connection.

What you need before setup

PlayStation Portal streams Remote Play from a PS5; it is not a PS4 Remote Play client. You need a PS5, a PlayStation account, an internet connection, and Portal paired by signing in with the same account. The PS5 must be online and either powered on or configured to connect while in Rest Mode. Games requiring a VR headset or certain additional peripherals are not compatible. See PlayStation’s PS5 Remote Play setup guidance and the Portal product page for current compatibility details.

Enable Remote Play on PS5

  1. Connect the PS5 to the internet, sign in to the PlayStation account you will use on Portal, and install the latest PS5 system software.
  2. On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. If you want to start the PS5 remotely while it is in Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.

These settings allow Remote Play to reach a PS5 in Rest Mode; they do not make an offline console available.

Connect Portal and start a session

  1. Sign in to Portal with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
  2. Connect Portal to Wi-Fi.
  3. From the Portal home screen, start Remote Play and select or connect to your PS5.

PlayStation recommends testing the connection near the PS5 before relying on it away from home, particularly if you have not signed in for a while. A nearby test helps separate setup or pairing problems from limitations of the network you plan to use elsewhere.

Check whether your internet connection meets PlayStation’s guidance

PlayStation guidance Upload Download How to interpret it
Minimum for Remote Play 5 Mbps 5 Mbps PlayStation’s minimum guidance, not a guarantee of stable play.
Recommended for a better play experience At least 15 Mbps At least 15 Mbps PlayStation’s recommendation for high-speed connectivity; actual quality varies with the network environment and game.

These figures are PlayStation support guidance checked in 2026, not results from an independent Portal performance study. A speed test can show whether measured upload and download reach those targets, but it does not measure every cause of stutter or disconnection, such as weak Wi-Fi coverage or congestion. PlayStation notes that play quality may vary with the network environment.

  1. Restart Portal. Then try Remote Play again.
  2. Check Wi-Fi on another device. If other devices also struggle, troubleshoot the network or internet connection before focusing on Portal.
  3. Run a speed test. Compare both upload and download with PlayStation’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation. Results describe the test connection at that time, not a promise of Remote Play quality.
  4. Reduce competing traffic. Wait for bandwidth-heavy activity on other devices to stop, pause downloads, or temporarily disconnect devices that do not need the network.
  5. Try a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network. This is one of PlayStation’s suggested wireless troubleshooting steps; whether it helps depends on the conditions of your network.
  6. Check Portal’s network settings and the access point. If the Wi-Fi error persists, try a different Wi-Fi network to help determine whether the issue is specific to one access point or network.

Portal connects to the router over Wi-Fi, so you cannot solve its connection problem by wiring Portal to Ethernet. PlayStation’s general Remote Play troubleshooting discusses wired Ethernet for PC or Mac clients; that advice does not apply to Portal. See PlayStation’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting for its wireless checks.

Check Portal software and available quality settings

Install current Portal system software when available. PlayStation’s software history retrieved for this article lists version 7.0.2 with performance and stability improvements. Its version 7.0.0 notes added a 1080p High Quality maximum-resolution option, available from the Quick Menu during Remote Play or Cloud Streaming, and a Troubleshoot > Show Network Status view. Software notes can change; consult PlayStation’s Portal system software page for the current version and feature availability.

Using Portal on public Wi-Fi

Portal can connect to select public Wi-Fi networks, but complete initial setup at home first. Some public networks require additional validation; PlayStation says a smartphone or tablet may be needed to complete those steps. A successful login does not ensure smooth Remote Play because performance depends on the public network, which may be outside your control. See PlayStation’s public Wi-Fi instructions for Portal.

When the PS5 is reachable only on certain networks

If ordinary Wi-Fi checks do not resolve the issue, PlayStation’s general Remote Play connection guide identifies UDP port 8572 and warns that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. This is general Remote Play advice across several client types, not a Portal-only setting. Router or carrier configuration can be complicated; if you do not know how to change it safely, contact your internet service provider, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier rather than changing settings at random. The guide is PlayStation’s Remote Play connection troubleshooting page.
