Before a child uses an AI math app, check its age and consent rules, supervise the child’s account and device, then review the app’s own data practices and permissions. Family Link can manage some Google account and device settings, but it does not control how a separate app handles the child’s questions, photos, or account information.
1. Check the app’s age rules before installing it
Confirm the child’s age and country, then read the math tool’s current official terms for its minimum age, parental-consent requirements, and account rules. Device controls do not override an app’s eligibility terms.
Photomath is an example, not a rule for every app
Photomath’s Terms of Service say the service is intended for people 13 or older and prohibit use by children under 13. The terms also require minors in their country to have a parent or guardian’s permission. Its Privacy Policy contains additional language about children’s data. These rules apply to Photomath; do not assume another AI math app has the same age threshold or consent terms.
2. Review the child’s Google account and device in Family Link
Family Link can help parents manage parts of a child’s Google account and device. Depending on the service, device, and region, available controls may include permitted apps, app activity, permissions, some content settings, activity controls, screen time, and download or purchase approvals. Google describes examples in its Family Link privacy guide and explains account controls in its children’s privacy notice.

Use the Family Link app to review the controls available for your child’s account and device. Labels and menus can vary, so follow the current in-app guidance rather than relying on a fixed path that may not match your setup. Check the controls that matter for this app:
- Whether the app is allowed and whether downloads or purchases need approval.
- What app activity and screen-time options are available.
- Which permissions the app has, such as camera or microphone access.
- Relevant content and account activity settings.
These settings govern aspects of the supervised Google account or device. They do not establish that a third-party app’s own collection, retention, or use of data is limited in the same way.

3. Read the math app’s privacy notice and inspect its settings
Google’s child-account notice describes information Google may collect about services a child uses and how they use them, including Gemini or Search queries, device and app information, and activity. Collection of voice or audio and location information can depend on settings and use. Google also states that its notice does not cover third-party apps, actions, or websites a child may use: “This Privacy Notice does not apply to the practices of any third party (non-Google) apps, actions or websites that your child may use.”
Read the math app’s own privacy policy and terms, and look through its in-app privacy controls. Find out what the service says about:

Policies differ among apps, and the cited Google materials do not answer these questions for every AI math service. If a policy or setting does not clearly explain a practice that matters to you, do not assume the app handles the data in a particular way.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Limit personal information in questions and photos
As a cautious practice, ask your child not to include identifying details in prompts. Before uploading a worksheet or taking a picture, check that it does not show the child’s name, school, or other personal information. This reduces what the child chooses to share; it does not replace reviewing the app’s data policy or settings.

5. Treat Gemini and other AI services as separate cases
Family Link supervision does not by itself establish that a particular AI service is available to every supervised child or in every region. Check the current eligibility and account requirements for the exact service and feature being used.
For Gemini, Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub explains information processed when someone interacts with Gemini and describes account controls for deleting recordings. Read the current notice for the child’s account type and the feature in use; do not assume its details apply to a separate math app.
6. Recheck after changes
Review permissions, supervision settings, and the app’s privacy notice again after a significant app update, a change in account age, or a revision to the service’s terms or privacy policy. Eligibility and controls can change, and the settings available depend on the service, device, and region.
