The standard membership is enough; you do not need the Expansion Pack or a separate NES-style controller.
What you need
- A Nintendo Account and a Switch-family console connected to the internet. Nintendo’s service FAQ lists a Switch or Switch 2 running system menu version 6.0 or later as supported: Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ.
- An active Nintendo Switch Online membership on the Nintendo Account you select in eShop. Nintendo requires membership for the NES software: Nintendo’s access instructions.
- A controller compatible with your console. The separately sold NES-style controllers are optional accessories, not a requirement.
Download and open the NES app
- From the HOME Menu, open Nintendo eShop.
- Choose the user profile linked to the Nintendo Account with the active membership.
- In eShop, select Nintendo Switch Online.
- Choose Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online.
- Select Free Download, then select it again when prompted.
- When the software appears on the HOME Menu, open it and choose an NES game.
Nintendo may require an internet connection periodically to verify membership status. The app is downloaded software, not a physical game cartridge. See Nintendo’s step-by-step instructions.
Choose the right membership
The standard Nintendo Switch Online membership includes the NES library. The Expansion Pack is not needed just to play NES games; it adds access to other classic systems and selected additional benefits. Nintendo’s US overview lists these annual prices, accessed in 2026:
| US plan | Accounts covered | Annual price |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | One Nintendo Account | $19.99 USD/year |
| Family | Up to eight accounts | $34.99 USD/year |
These are US prices, not global rates. Price, term options, and service features depend on territory; check your local eShop and Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online overview. Nintendo also explains purchase and membership extension options in its membership support article.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*

Trying the service first
Nintendo’s US support page describes a seven-day free trial for eligible accounts. It is available once per account and cannot be started while an individual or family membership is active. A payment method is required for auto-renewal; turning off auto-renewal before the trial ends prevents a charge. Confirm local eligibility and terms on Nintendo’s free-trial support page.
If the NES app does not appear
- Check the selected eShop user. Return to eShop and make sure you chose the Nintendo Account that holds the active membership.
- Check the account country setting. The available eShop depends on the country set on the Nintendo Account. If the region is wrong, eShop offerings and membership options may not match what you expect. See Nintendo’s download instructions.
- Check the internet connection. You need internet to access eShop, and Nintendo may periodically verify the membership.
- Check local availability. Membership services and features vary by country; consult Nintendo’s service and feature availability by country.
Do you need the NES controllers?
No. Nintendo associates its NES controllers with the NES software, but they are an optional accessory for players who prefer that form factor. You can use a controller compatible with your console instead. Check current regional compatibility and availability before buying a separate controller.
