The safest way to move from an original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED to Switch 2 is to start a full System Transfer during the new console’s initial setup. Use the local transfer when both consoles are available; it avoids uploading your household data and is the better choice before selling or trading in the old system. If the old console must leave first, upload its data through Nintendo’s server-transfer option and retrieve it during Switch 2 setup. Neither method is a literal mirror: digital games download again, some settings do not move, and the fate of a save on the old console depends on the save’s cloud-support and user-link status.
This US-focused guide covers preparation, both transfer routes, save-data exceptions, Animal Crossing, microSD cards, and what to do if Switch 2 has already been set up.
What should I do before turning on Switch 2?
Prepare both systems before you accept any transfer or reset warning. A full transfer involves every user on the source console, so ask each person which saves, screenshots, and videos matter and make sure the relevant Nintendo Account credentials work.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Connect both consoles to the internet and install any system updates they request. The old console should be updated before you begin.
- Confirm that at least one old-Switch user is linked to a Nintendo Account. On Switch 2, you will sign in with that same account.
- Keep the old console powered, nearby, and unmodified until the transfer has finished and you have checked the result.
- Move as much source data as possible into the old console’s system storage, as Nintendo recommends, and keep its conventional microSD card available for captures.
- Do not initialize, wipe, sell, or trade in the old console until you understand whether you are using local transfer or server transfer.
For the physical setup, have the supplied Switch 2 USB-C cable and AC adapter ready. Attach both Joy-Con 2 controllers while the console is being configured, then answer the language, region, internet, and time-zone prompts. For television use, connect the Switch 2 dock with the included Switch 2 AC adapter and Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The older Switch AC adapter cannot power the Switch 2 dock for TV mode.

Which transfer route should I choose?
Choose local transfer if the old and new consoles are in front of you. Choose server transfer only when the old system will be unavailable before you can set up Switch 2.
| Route | Use it when | What happens to the old console | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local System Transfer | Both consoles are available at the same time | Save treatment varies by save category; it is not a universal copy | All users participate, and the full transfer is offered during initial setup |
| Server System Transfer | You must trade in, sell, or otherwise surrender the old console first | The old console uploads the household data and is initialized | You must retrieve the upload by the displayed Download Deadline; Nintendo describes storage as up to one year |
| Nearby individual save transfer | Switch 2 is already configured and you need selected saves only | The selected source save is deleted | It can overwrite a save on the target console |
| Save Data Cloud | The particular game supports cloud backup and you have Nintendo Switch Online | The source console is not erased by the cloud operation | Not every game supports Save Data Cloud |
Nintendo’s US System Transfers to Nintendo Switch 2 guide is the authority for the screens and save categories. Menu wording can change with a software update, but the decision between local and server transfer remains the same.
How do I start Switch 2 setup and the full local transfer?
Start the transfer on Switch 2 while its initial setup is still in progress. If you finish setup without doing it, the full-transfer option is no longer a routine menu action and using it later requires initializing the target.
- Connect the hardware. Attach the supplied AC adapter, connect the included USB-C cable when prompted, attach both Joy-Con 2 controllers, and complete the language, region, internet, and time-zone screens.
- Sign in to the matching Nintendo Account. Use the account linked to a user on the old Switch. If several household users have accounts, have their credentials available; a full transfer includes all users on the source system.
- Open System Transfer when it appears. Choose Start System Transfer. If Switch 2 asks about a microSD Express card, insert one if you have it or skip that step; expanded card storage is optional.
- Prepare the old console. Keep it close to Switch 2, online, powered, and updated. On the old Switch, open System Settings > System > System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2.
- Choose the local-system option. Follow the on-screen prompts on both consoles until they establish a connection. On Switch 2, leave the receiving screen open rather than navigating away.
- Choose content options. The prompts let you decide whether digital software should be redownloaded automatically and whether album media should be transferred. The downloads require internet access and may continue after the main setup screens.
- Start the download on Switch 2. When prompted, select Start Download. Leave both systems alone while the transfer runs; Switch 2 may restart before setup is complete.
- Finish setup and verify. Confirm that each expected user profile appears, then check important games, saves, and album content before you reset or dispose of the old console.
Nintendo states: “Once the system transfer has been completed, your digital games will automatically be redownloaded to the new system.” That means an internet download, not instant offline access. Large libraries can take time, and a game will still need to be compatible with Switch 2.
How does local transfer affect saves on the old Switch?
Local transfer is not a universal copy of every save. Nintendo’s detailed US rules divide saves by account linkage and Save Data Cloud support, so inspect valuable games before confirming.
- For a linked user, a save from a game that supports Save Data Cloud remains on the old console and is copied to Switch 2.
- A save tied to an unlinked user is moved to Switch 2 and removed from the old console.
- A save from a game without Save Data Cloud support is moved to Switch 2 and removed from the old console.
- All users on the source system take part in the full transfer; it is not a one-user-at-a-time migration.
Because the outcomes differ, do not assume the old console will remain a complete backup. Check every especially important save, including saves belonging to a user who never linked a Nintendo Account. If you need a second playable copy, the full transfer is not designed to create one.

How do I transfer when the old console must leave first?
Use server transfer when the old Switch will be traded in, sold, or unavailable before Switch 2 can be set up. This route is deliberately destructive to the old system.
- On the old Switch, open System Settings > System > System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2.
- Choose I don’t have a Nintendo Switch 2 yet, or the equivalent option referring to transferring to another system.
- Read and record the displayed Download Deadline. Nintendo describes server storage as available for up to one year, but the deadline shown on your consoles is the one to follow.
- Start the upload and review the factory-reset warning. Do not continue until every household user agrees that the old console will be initialized.
- Allow the upload to finish. The old Switch is then initialized; it is not left as a usable copy of your games and saves.
- During Switch 2’s initial setup, sign in with the same Nintendo Account and choose the option to retrieve the uploaded transfer.
- Start the download and wait for the new console to complete its restart and setup. Keep the displayed deadline information until retrieval succeeds.
Server transfer is not a way to postpone the decision indefinitely. If the deadline passes, Nintendo’s support instructions do not promise that the upload can be recovered, so retrieve it before the date shown on screen.
What moves, what downloads again, and what must be set up again?
Expect a combination of transferred account data, redownloaded software, and preferences that need to be recreated manually.
| Item | Result on Switch 2 |
|---|---|
| Digital purchases | Redownloaded after setup when you choose the software-download option; internet access is required |
| User profiles and linked account information | Transferred for the users included in the full transfer |
| System-memory screenshots and videos | Transferred when you select the album-media option |
| Parental-control information | Transferred according to Nintendo’s transfer rules |
| Network settings | Transferred according to Nintendo’s transfer rules, but verify your connection if downloads do not start |
| Bluetooth audio pairings | Not transferred; pair headphones or speakers again |
| Custom button mappings | Not transferred; recreate them in controller settings |
| Time, language, and region preferences | Not transferred; review these during or after setup |
| Game compatibility | Must be checked per title; transfer does not guarantee that every old game runs on Switch 2 |
Do not interpret a missing game icon as a lost purchase. First connect Switch 2 to the internet, confirm the expected Nintendo Account is signed in, and allow the automatic redownload queue to complete. A title that is not compatible will require a separate compatibility decision rather than another transfer attempt.
Can I transfer after I have already set up Switch 2?
A full system transfer is tied to the initial setup. If setup is complete, Nintendo’s full-transfer path requires initializing the target Switch 2 and repeating setup, which erases data already placed on that target.

- Nearby save transfer: Open the save-data transfer feature on both consoles, select the user and game, and follow the prompts. The selected source save is deleted and a target save can be overwritten, so make a deliberate choice before confirming.
- Save Data Cloud: For a game that supports cloud backups, use Nintendo Switch Online to back up on the old console and download on Switch 2. This membership is required for the cloud route, while it is not required for a nearby transfer.
These methods move selected saves, not the complete household configuration. They do not replace the full setup-time transfer if you also need users, system data, and album content moved together.
Will my Animal Crossing: New Horizons island transfer?
For the United States, Nintendo’s game-specific instructions say that a Switch-to-Switch-2 system transfer also transfers the Animal Crossing: New Horizons island save. Follow the US directions in Nintendo’s Animal Crossing transfer guidance rather than treating the island as an ordinary individual user save.
If Switch 2 has already been set up, use Nintendo’s separate Island Transfer Tool route instead of assuming a normal nearby save transfer will move the shared island. Regional Nintendo documentation is not consistent: a Singapore guide discusses linking each transferred resident to the original user after a local transfer, while an Australian article describes shared-island movement differently. Those regional instructions should not be generalized to a US console. In the US, keep every resident’s account information available and verify the island and resident links before retiring the old system.
Can I use my old microSD card in Switch 2?
An old conventional Switch microSD card cannot become expanded game storage for Switch 2. Keep it available to bring over existing screenshots and videos, but plan on a microSD Express card for ongoing expanded Switch 2 game storage.
MicroSD Express is optional; Switch 2 can operate without one. Nintendo lists support for capacities up to 2TB. Its US accessory page names a Samsung microSD Express card with a 256GB capacity; capacity is the card’s specification, not a guarantee that every game will fit or that downloads will be instantaneous. See Nintendo’s microSD support instructions and the Switch 2 accessories page for the current compatibility information.
When the setup prompt asks about a card, insert a microSD Express card if you already have one or skip the prompt and add storage later. Do not buy a conventional card expecting it to hold Switch 2 game data; the Express label is the requirement.

What should I check after the transfer?
Use this checklist before you wipe or hand over the old console:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Open every user profile and confirm that the expected Nintendo Account is attached.
- Open the games with the most valuable saves and verify the latest progress.
- Check the album for screenshots and videos that were stored in system memory or selected for transfer.
- Wait for digital games and updates to finish downloading before judging the library incomplete.
- Pair Bluetooth audio devices again.
- Recreate custom button mappings and review language, region, and time settings.
- For Animal Crossing: New Horizons, open the island and verify resident links before disconnecting the old console.
- Keep the old console until these checks pass, especially when a save category was removed from the source by local transfer.
What can go wrong, and how do I recover?
The transfer option is missing on Switch 2
You may have completed initial setup already. A full transfer then requires initializing Switch 2 and repeating setup. If you cannot accept that reset, use nearby individual save transfer or Save Data Cloud for supported games.
The consoles will not connect
Put both systems close together, connect them to the internet, install pending updates, and return to the receiving screen on Switch 2. Keep the old console powered and do not launch another task while the transfer is waiting for a connection.
A save is missing on the old console
That may be the expected result for an unlinked user or a game without Save Data Cloud support. Check the corresponding user and game on Switch 2 before attempting another transfer; repeating the operation is not a way to create a second source copy.
Games appear but do not start
Allow downloads and updates to complete, then check the title’s Switch 2 compatibility. Transfer moves account and save information; it does not make an incompatible game compatible.

The old card is rejected
A conventional Switch microSD card is not the supported expanded-storage format for Switch 2. Use it for capture import only and install a microSD Express card if you need additional game storage.

Frequently asked questions
Does a full transfer move screenshots saved on the old microSD card?
The old card can be used to bring over screenshots and videos, but it is not converted into Switch 2 game storage. Keep the card until the album content you care about is visible on the new console, then use microSD Express if you need ongoing expanded storage.
Can I leave the old Switch connected while Switch 2 downloads games?
Yes, keep the source console powered until you have verified the transfer, particularly when local-transfer rules remove some saves from it. The new console’s digital games still need their own internet downloads, so the old system’s presence does not make the library instantly playable offline.
Do all household members need to be present for setup?
The full transfer includes all users on the source system, so collect each person’s account credentials and ask about important saves before starting. You do not need to create a separate full-transfer session for each user.
Why might an Animal Crossing resident need an extra sign-in?
Regional Nintendo instructions explain that a transferred resident may need to be linked back to the original user account after the island move. Keep the original account details for every resident and verify those links on the US console before retiring the source system.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer my library without moving every user?
The setup-time full transfer is household-wide and includes all source users. If you need only one person’s progress after setup, use an individual nearby save transfer or a supported Save Data Cloud download instead of starting a full system transfer.
Will a server transfer leave anything playable on the traded-in Switch?
No. The server route initializes the old console after upload, so it is not a method for keeping a second playable copy. Retrieve the upload on Switch 2 by the displayed deadline.
What should I do if a game is absent after setup?
Confirm that Switch 2 is online, the expected purchasing account is signed in, and automatic redownloads have finished. Then check the game’s Switch 2 compatibility; a transfer cannot add support for an incompatible title.
