To make head tracking work in Wwise, your game engine must send the headset’s position and orientation to Wwise continuously through SetListenerPosition(). Wwise then decodes 3D or ambisonic content from the listener’s current orientation, so a sound fixed in the world stays fixed when the player turns their head. On a new Meta Quest project, use the Meta XR Audio SDK for Wwise; the older Oculus Spatializer is end-of-life. Steam Audio is a documented cross-platform alternative for Wwise 2023.1.0 and later.
The setup has three parts: install and route one supported spatializer, configure each sound for listener-relative 3D rendering, and update the Wwise listener from the same coordinate system as the HMD every frame. The guide below covers those paths, legacy constraints, verification tests, and the fixes for silent or non-spatial output.
What does head tracking mean in Wwise?
Head tracking is listener-orientation data, not a separate audio effect. Your headset reports its rotation (and usually its position) to the engine; the engine passes that pose to Wwise as the active listener. Wwise uses the listener orientation when it decodes spatialized or ambisonic material, changing the speaker or headphone signals as the player looks around.

For a world-locked sound, the expected result is counterintuitive at first: turn your head to the left and the sound should move toward the right side of your headphones, because the source has not moved in the game world. If the entire sound field turns with the head, the listener pose is stale, the wrong listener index is active, or the content is being mixed as ordinary 2D audio.

Which Wwise spatializer should you choose?
Choose the renderer before building your bus hierarchy. Meta’s current documentation replaces the Oculus Spatializer with the Meta XR Audio SDK, while Steam Audio provides a documented alternative that starts at Wwise 2023.1.0.
| Integration | Current status | Wwise requirement | Routing model | Input and spatial features | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Meta XR Audio SDK for Wwise | Current path for new Meta/Quest projects | Use a Wwise version supported by the SDK; the documentation page consulted is for Wwise 2024.1.5 | Master bus output goes to a Meta XR Audio Sink; spatialized sounds use listener-relative routing | Position or Position + Orientation; HRTF-style headphone rendering and Meta acoustics features are handled by the SDK | Every relevant source and bus must be routed to the sink, with the spatialization mix at 100% |
| Oculus Spatializer Plugin | Legacy; Meta says it is end-of-life and support ends beyond version 47 | Follow the legacy plugin’s supported Wwise and runtime versions | One spatializer bus under the master bus | Mono or stereo sources; Position or Position + Orientation | 2.0 speaker or headphone output only; up to 64 simultaneous spatialized sounds on its bus |
| Steam Audio Spatializer | Documented cross-platform alternative | Wwise 2023.1.0 or later | Add the Steam Audio effect to a sound object in the Actor-Mixer Hierarchy | Spatialization plus Steam Audio’s supported acoustics and reflection workflow | No independent CPU, voice-count, or latency benchmark is established in the setup documentation |
Do not install both Meta’s and the legacy Oculus spatializer on the same production path. Pick one renderer, keep one clear bus route, and validate it with a known test sound before adding room acoustics.
What do I need before configuring Wwise head tracking?
- A Wwise project and an engine integration that can read the HMD pose.
- A supported spatializer package: Meta XR Audio SDK for a new Meta/Quest project, or Steam Audio when its cross-platform integration fits your target platforms.
- A master-bus design that makes the spatializer’s output device explicit.
- A test event containing a mono sound and, if you are validating ambisonics, a fixed ambisonic asset.
- A repeatable way to turn the listener in place while monitoring on the target headphones or headset.
Keep the engine’s coordinate system consistent. If the game uses a different up-axis, handedness, or unit scale from the HMD runtime, convert the pose before calling Wwise. A correct spatializer cannot repair a listener transform that is mirrored, rotated by a constant offset, or updated in a different coordinate frame.
How do I configure the Meta XR Audio SDK in Wwise?
The Meta path is a routing configuration as much as it is a plugin installation. The essential chain is a master bus feeding a Meta XR Audio Sink, with each spatialized sound routed to that sink through listener-relative 3D positioning.
1. Install the Meta XR Wwise integration
Install the Meta XR Audio SDK package that matches your engine and Wwise integration. Restart Wwise after the plugin is installed so the sink, source, and effect types appear in the authoring interface. Keep the SDK version aligned with the runtime package shipped by your engine; mismatched native binaries can make an otherwise correct project fail at load time.
2. Create the sink route
- In the Master-Mixer Hierarchy, select the master bus that represents the final mix.
- Set that bus’s output device to a Meta XR Audio Sink.
- Route the bus containing your spatialized content to the master bus, or directly to the configured sink according to your project’s bus hierarchy.
- Confirm in the audio-mixing view that the spatialized bus is not bypassing the sink through a separate main-mix output.
The sink is not optional decoration: it is the device that performs the Meta-specific spatial output. A source can have a 3D position and still sound flat if its bus terminates at an ordinary output device.
3. Set each source to listener-relative 3D
- Select the sound or Actor-Mixer object.
- Open its Positioning tab.
- Enable Listener Relative Routing.
- Set 3D Spatialization to Position for a point source whose own rotation is irrelevant, or Position + Orientation when the source’s orientation must affect rendering.
- Set Speaker Panning / 3D Spatialization Mix to 100%.
At 100%, the object is sent through the spatialized route rather than blended back into the ordinary main mix. A lower value intentionally creates a dry, non-spatial component; it is not a useful diagnostic setting when you are trying to prove that head tracking works.

4. Enable acoustics only after basic rotation works
For Meta reverb and reflections, verify that the source routes to the Meta XR Audio Sink and that its Meta XR Audio Source component has both Enable Spatialization and Enable Acoustics enabled. Turn on the sink’s reverb and early-reflection switches when those effects are required.
Instantiate only one Reflections plugin for room acoustics. Meta’s guidance treats it as a singleton through which all relevant sources are routed; creating multiple Reflections instances can produce artifacts instead of richer reflections.
How do I install Steam Audio for Wwise?
Steam Audio is useful when you need a documented alternative to Meta-specific rendering. Its Wwise integration requires Wwise 2023.1.0 or later.
- Download the Steam Audio Wwise integration and extract the archive.
- Open Wwise Launcher and select Plugins.
- Choose Add from directory.
- Point the launcher at the extracted
wwisedirectory and complete the installation. - Open your Wwise project and, in the Actor-Mixer Hierarchy, select the sound you want to test.
- Open the sound’s Effects tab and choose Add Effect > Steam Audio Spatializer > Default (Custom).
After adding the effect, keep the Wwise listener update path identical to the Meta setup: the engine still owns HMD tracking and must pass the active listener orientation continuously. The spatializer changes how audio is rendered; it does not poll the headset by itself.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do I pass HMD orientation to Wwise?
Call Wwise’s listener-position API from the engine update loop whenever the listener is active. Audiokinetic’s implementation requirement is continuous delivery of HMD tracking data as listener orientation through SetListenerPosition(); a one-time initialization call is not sufficient for head tracking.
Use the same pose for position and orientation
Read the headset pose after the XR runtime has applied its latest tracking update, convert it to the game’s audio coordinate system, and submit that pose to the listener used by your sounds. Keep position and orientation synchronized so a frame never combines a new rotation with an old location.
Match listener indices
Wwise supports multiple listeners. The listener index selected by the engine must be the one referenced by the sound objects’ listener-relative routing. A common failure is updating listener zero while the active sounds are assigned to listener one; the API calls succeed, but the audible field does not respond.

Keep updates continuous and pause-safe
Continue updating the listener while the XR view is active, including frames in which the headset is nearly stationary. When the application is paused or tracking is unavailable, use the engine’s defined tracking-loss behavior rather than sending invalid or uninitialized transforms. Resume normal updates before judging spatialization after an app switch.

- Read the current HMD position and quaternion or equivalent orientation.
- Convert axes and units to the coordinate system used by the Wwise integration.
- Write the converted pose to the active Wwise listener with
SetListenerPosition(). - Post or update the sound event on the intended game object and listener.
- Repeat on every engine update while the listener is active.
The exact wrapper differs by engine integration, but the invariant is the same: Wwise must receive fresh orientation data, not merely a camera rotation applied inside the renderer.
How can I verify that ambisonics follows the HMD correctly?
Use a fixed ambisonic sound in a known world position and turn your head in place. The sound field should remain fixed in world space while the decoded headphone or speaker output changes with your rotation.
- Place the ambisonic source at a known orientation, preferably with a prominent feature such as a voice or transient at the front.
- Start playback while the listener faces the source’s reference direction.
- Turn the HMD 90 degrees without moving the player’s world position.
- Listen for the feature to move to the appropriate side, then continue through 180 and 360 degrees.
- Repeat with the headset held still while the game camera is rotated by controller input, if your title supports both modes. The test should distinguish physical HMD rotation from artificial camera turns.
If the source rotates with your head instead of staying fixed, first inspect listener updates and listener assignment. If only one axis is wrong, inspect the coordinate conversion and the HMD runtime’s forward and up vectors before changing Wwise parameters.
How do I maintain a project that still uses the Oculus Spatializer?
The Oculus Spatializer is a legacy path. Meta states that it has been replaced by the Meta XR Audio SDK, is in end-of-life, and is not supported beyond version 47. Maintain it only when a shipping product is locked to that compatibility range and migration is not yet practical.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Set Wwise output to 2.0 Speaker Panning or 2.0 Headphone Panning. Higher channel configurations are unsupported by the legacy spatializer. Feed it mono or stereo sources; Meta recommends monophonic sources because the spatializer performs the stereo rendering itself.
Use one spatializer bus
- Create one audio bus under the master bus.
- Add the Oculus Spatializer to that bus.
- Route the spatialized sources to this bus.
- Do not add the plugin to a second bus; Meta warns that doing so may introduce noise.
Meta documents up to 64 simultaneously spatialized sounds on that bus. When all slots are occupied, later sounds fall back to native 2D panning until a slot becomes available. Treat 64 as the documented ceiling for this legacy bus, not as a promise of a particular CPU cost or latency.

Choose Position or Position + Orientation
Use Position for a point-source placement where the source’s own rotation should not affect the result. Use Position + Orientation when the source has directional orientation that must influence rendering. The listener still needs continuous HMD orientation updates in both modes.
Why is there no spatialization in Wwise?
Most failures are routing or listener-update mistakes rather than a defective HMD. Work through the checks in this order so you do not debug acoustics before proving basic object rendering.
Meta XR output sounds like ordinary stereo
- Confirm the master-bus output device is a Meta XR Audio Sink.
- Confirm the source bus reaches that sink instead of the ordinary main mix.
- Enable Listener Relative Routing on the sound.
- Set 3D Spatialization to Position or Position + Orientation.
- Set Speaker Panning / 3D Spatialization Mix to 100%.
Head rotation has no audible effect
- Check that the engine calls
SetListenerPosition()continuously, not only when the level loads. - Verify the HMD orientation is converted into the same coordinate system as the game and Wwise.
- Verify the listener index updated by the engine matches the listener assigned to the sounds.
- Test with a fixed sound and a deliberate 90-degree turn; do not rely on a moving source whose motion can hide a stale listener.
Meta reverb or reflections are missing
- Route the source to the Meta XR Audio Sink.
- Enable Enable Spatialization and Enable Acoustics on the Meta XR Audio Source.
- Turn on the sink’s reverb and early-reflection controls.
- Ensure only one Reflections plugin is instantiated.
Legacy Oculus output is silent or flat
- Set output to 2.0 Speaker Panning or 2.0 Headphone Panning.
- Use mono or stereo input; do not feed an unsupported multichannel source.
- Keep the spatializer on one bus and route the test sound to that bus.
- Check whether the 64-sound bus limit has been reached and later sounds have fallen back to 2D panning.
Steam Audio is not available in the Effects menu
Reopen Wwise Launcher’s Plugins page and verify that you used Add from directory on the extracted wwise folder. Confirm that the project is running Wwise 2023.1.0 or later, then restart Wwise so the plugin registry is refreshed.
What are the CPU, voice-count, and latency trade-offs?
The supplied setup documentation does not publish an independent performance benchmark or a universal latency figure for these integrations. Do not use a claimed frame time or voice count from one project as a general specification.
Use the documented limits and your own target-device profiling instead. The legacy Oculus path explicitly documents a 64-sound spatialization ceiling on one bus; Meta XR Audio SDK and Steam Audio require profiling with your project’s source count, acoustics settings, sample rate, platform, and engine integration. Profile with the same HMD runtime and output mode used for release, and test worst-case scenes rather than an empty room.
Can a head-tracking headset improve Wwise authoring?
A monitoring headset with integrated head tracking can shorten the loop between an author’s change and the perceived result, because the author can audition world-locked behavior while turning their head instead of relying only on a simulated camera.
A TechRadar report dated October 22, 2026 says the Audeze Maxwell 2 ANC has native Wwise head-tracking support and can monitor over USB-C or its low-latency wireless dongle. Treat that as a current product report, not a substitute for checking your exact firmware, Wwise integration, operating system, and target runtime. A headset’s native tracking support does not remove the requirement for the game engine to update Wwise’s listener.

What should a production readiness checklist include?
- The selected spatializer is supported for the project’s Wwise version and target runtime.
- Only the intended spatializer is active on the production route.
- The master bus and spatialized buses terminate at the correct sink or effect bus.
- Every intended source has listener-relative routing and the correct Position or Position + Orientation mode.
- Spatialization mix values are intentional; diagnostic sources are at 100%.
- The engine updates the correct Wwise listener with converted HMD position and orientation every frame or engine update.
- A fixed ambisonic test remains world-locked during 90-, 180-, and 360-degree head turns.
- Meta acoustics settings and the single Reflections instance are verified separately from basic spatialization.
- Legacy projects document the 2.0 output requirement, mono/stereo input rule, one-bus design, and 64-sound ceiling.
- Performance is profiled on the actual target hardware; no undocumented CPU or latency number is treated as a guarantee.
Which setup is the sensible default?
For a new Meta Quest title, start with Meta XR Audio SDK for Wwise and make its sink routing explicit. For a cross-platform project that meets the version requirement, Steam Audio is the documented alternative. Keep the legacy Oculus Spatializer only as a compatibility measure, because Meta has placed it in end-of-life status.
Whichever renderer you choose, head tracking succeeds or fails at the listener-update boundary: the engine must continuously pass the HMD pose to Wwise through SetListenerPosition(). Once that update is correct, bus routing, source positioning, and acoustics settings determine whether the result is a clean world-locked spatial field or ordinary stereo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Wwise read my headset orientation without an XR game engine?
No. Wwise does not independently discover the HMD pose in this workflow. The host engine or application must obtain tracking data from its XR runtime, convert it to the project’s coordinate system, and submit it to the active Wwise listener.
Do ambisonic files need a special head-tracking export format?
Head tracking is applied at playback through the listener orientation; the critical requirement is that the ambisonic content is routed through a compatible spatializer and decoded relative to that listener. Validate channel order and ambisonic metadata in the asset pipeline separately, because a correctly updated listener cannot fix an incorrectly encoded file.
Why does turning the game camera not always produce the same result as turning the HMD?
A camera can rotate from controller input, scripted animation, or comfort settings without changing the physical HMD pose. Decide whether your design treats those rotations as listener orientation, then make the engine submit the final listener transform that should govern audio rather than assuming every visual camera change is tracked automatically.
Should I spatialize music and voice at 100 percent?
Not necessarily. The 100 percent setting is the diagnostic and routing requirement for proving that a sound is fully processed by the spatializer. In a finished mix, designers may intentionally blend a dry component for intelligibility or comfort, but that choice should be documented per sound rather than used to hide a broken route.
