To keep visitors off your home network, create a separate guest Wi-Fi network, use a different password from your main network, and turn off any setting that allows guests to access the local network. A guest network name by itself does not guarantee that devices on it are blocked from your printers, storage, or other home devices.

What guest Wi-Fi does—and what to check

A guest network gives visitors a separate Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, so you do not have to share your primary credentials. NETGEAR describes it as letting visitors use the internet without using the primary wireless network’s password (NETGEAR Support).

The important privacy control is whether guest devices can reach your local network. Router makers implement and label this differently: TP-Link, for example, documents a separate option to allow guests to access the local network (TP-Link support). Check that control rather than assuming that the word “guest” means your home devices are protected.

Set up the guest network

  1. Open your router’s app or management page. Use a device connected to the router, then look for Guest Network or Guest Wi-Fi. Depending on the product, the setting may be under wireless settings or a network section. Menu labels and paths vary by manufacturer and model.
  2. Enable the network and give it its own name. Choose an SSID visitors can identify, but do not reuse your primary network name or password.
  3. Set a distinct Wi-Fi password and save. Use the guest network’s security controls to choose a password that is different from the one for your main Wi-Fi.
  4. Turn off access to the local network. Look for wording such as Allow guests to access the local network and leave it off if visitors should not reach home devices. If there is a separate guest-client isolation control, decide whether visitors’ devices should be able to communicate with one another.
  5. Choose the strongest compatible security mode. The FTC lists WPA3 Personal and WPA2 Personal as suitable encryption options for home Wi-Fi. Prefer WPA3 Personal if the router and visitors’ devices support it; WPA2 Personal may be needed for compatibility (FTC: How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network).
  6. Connect a guest device and verify the result. Confirm that it can access the internet. If practical, also check that it cannot reach a home device, such as a printer or shared storage. This is a useful configuration check, not a guarantee against every possible network risk.

Choose the right isolation settings

Block guest access to your home network

For the privacy goal in this guide, leave local-network access disabled. Enable it only if visitors have a specific need to use a printer, casting target, file share, or other device on your home network. If enabling it is necessary, understand that this weakens the separation you set up.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Decide whether guests can see one another

Blocking guests from the home network and blocking guest devices from communicating with each other are separate behaviors. Guest-client isolation can reduce visibility among visitors’ devices; leave that isolation on if peer-to-peer access is unnecessary. If visitors need to connect to one another, you may need to turn it off, depending on your router’s controls. TP-Link and Huawei document guest-client isolation separately from other guest-network behavior (TP-Link support; Huawei Support).

Know what isolation may disrupt

Devices on an isolated guest network may not be able to discover or communicate with devices on your main network. Casting, printing, and other local features can therefore stop working. Huawei notes that screen projection is not supported on the isolated Guest Wi-Fi for the products covered by its guidance (Huawei Support).

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54)
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

If a local feature fails, first identify which devices need to communicate. Do not enable broad local-network access just to fix an issue without considering what else that setting permits. Where the router offers separate controls, adjust only the relevant isolation option and test again.

Check your router’s model and firmware

Guest-network capabilities are not uniform. GL.iNet documents guest settings as separated from the LAN beginning with firmware v4.5, and notes that some models without Wi-Fi do not expose guest-network settings (GL.iNet Router Docs: Guest Network). TP-Link also documents local-network access as a configurable option rather than an automatic property of every guest SSID (TP-Link support).

Check the documentation for your exact router model and firmware version. If you cannot find a setting that blocks guest access to the local network, do not assume your current guest network provides that separation; consult the manufacturer. Consider another router only if your existing one lacks the controls you need.

What guest Wi-Fi can—and cannot—protect

A properly configured guest network can reduce exposure of your home devices. The FTC explains that it can help keep a guest device with malware from getting onto the primary network (FTC: How to Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network). The protection depends on the router’s implementation and the settings you choose; guest Wi-Fi is not a promise of absolute security.
