To set up Voice Match for multiple household members, each person must use their own Google Account and enable Voice Match for the supported Google Home devices they use. In the Google Home app, go to Profile picture or initial > Home settings > Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant > Voice Match. Repeat for each person; one home can have up to six Voice Match users.

Before you start

  • Each household member needs to be signed in to the Google Account they want linked to their voice profile. Google allows one Voice Match profile per Google Account.
  • These home setup steps do not work with a Google Workspace account. For a supervised account on a shared device, Google directs families to use Family Link.
  • Voice Match is available only on supported devices and languages. Speakers, Smart Displays, and Smart Clocks are examples, but support can vary by device and language.

Set up Voice Match in the Google Home app

  1. On the household member’s phone or tablet, open the Google Home app and sign in to that person’s Google Account.
  2. Tap the profile picture or initial at the top right.
  3. Tap Home settings.
  4. Choose Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant, depending on the assistant configured for the home.
  5. Tap Voice Match. Select the supported devices on which that person should be recognized.
  6. If no devices are enabled, choose More and follow the in-app prompts.

Repeat these steps while signed in to each additional household member’s Google Account. Google allows up to six people to use Voice Match in one home. If more than six people live there, Google recommends prioritizing people who need specific controls, such as children or guests.

Choose which devices recognize each person

Voice Match is configured for individual supported devices, so a person does not necessarily need it enabled on every speaker or display in the home. Select the devices where personalized recognition is useful, and leave it off on devices where it is not wanted. The Home app displays the devices it supports for the feature.

Some older Google Assistant instructions show the path Settings > Google Assistant > Voice Match. The current general Google Home path starts with the profile menu and Home settings; the assistant label can differ according to the home’s configuration.

What Voice Match does—and what it does not do

Voice Match lets the assistant recognize a household member and provide that person’s results. Google describes a unique voice model created on its servers and stored only on devices where Voice Match is enabled. When someone speaks, the device sends the model to Google to process the query and compare the voice; Google says it deletes the model and comparison data immediately after that process. A voice that is not matched is treated as a guest query and does not receive the recognized person’s personal results.

Voice Match recognition is separate from Personal results. Personal results control whether the assistant can provide information such as Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Photos content, as well as private YouTube playlists and personal YouTube Music library content. Availability of some personal results depends on country and language.

Review Personal results on shared devices

  1. In Google Home, tap the profile picture or initial.
  2. Choose Home settings.
  3. Tap Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant.
  4. Choose Personal results.
  5. Review the home-wide setting and the setting for each device. Personal results must be enabled for the home before they can be enabled on an individual device.

If Voice Match and Personal results are both enabled and you later turn Voice Match off, Personal results also turn off automatically. If Personal results remain on while Voice Match is off, anyone who speaks to the device may be able to access information made available through that setting. Google also warns that mistaken recognition of another person’s voice or a recording as the account holder can expose that person’s information.

Use Guest Mode for temporary privacy

On supported Google smart speakers and displays, say “Hey Google, turn on Guest Mode” to suppress personal results temporarily. Say “Hey Google, turn off Guest Mode” to return to ordinary use. While Guest Mode is on, personal results are not spoken or shown, and Google says assistant recordings and activity are automatically deleted from the device owner’s account during that period.
