To set up a Google Alert, enter a topic, keyword, phrase, organization, person, or website-related query at Google Alerts, review the preview, choose delivery and filtering options, then select Create Alert. Google Alerts emails you when new results for a topic appear in Google Search; it is a query-based aid, not a guarantee that Google will find every page or mention.
Set up an alert step by step
- Open Google Alerts and sign in if prompted.
- Enter the keyword, phrase, name, or website-related query you want to monitor.
- Review the preview. If it contains unrelated results, make the query more specific; if it looks too narrow, broaden the wording.
- Open the alert options and choose settings such as frequency, sources, language, region, and result volume. The exact controls and labels can change, so use the choices currently shown on the page.
- Select Create Alert. Google says it can email you when new Google Search results appear for the topic.
Choose a query for a website or keyword
Start with the words that best identify what you care about, then use the preview to judge whether the query is useful. For a website, try its recognizable domain or name; combine it with a distinctive brand, person, product, or subject phrase if that helps reduce unrelated matches.
- Organization:
Example Company - Distinctive phrase or product:
"Example service" - Website and topic:
example.com product announcement - Person and subject:
Jordan Lee renewable energy
These are starting points, not coverage guarantees. A domain query does not ensure that every page on that site—or every mention of the domain—will appear. Check the results preview and adjust the wording to fit your monitoring goal.
Pick settings that fit your monitoring goal
Google Alerts offers controls for delivery frequency and result filtering. Their current names or availability may vary.

#1 Best Overall
- Frequency: Choose a delivery pace that balances timeliness with inbox volume. A more frequent setting may suit a time-sensitive topic; a less frequent one can reduce interruptions.
- Sources: Narrow or broaden the types of results included, where the interface offers that choice.
- Language and region: Set these when you want results focused on a particular language or geographic area.
- Result volume: Use the available quantity or quality option to balance broader coverage against irrelevant matches.
- Email grouping: If you have several alerts, Google News Initiative describes an option to receive multiple alerts together in one email.
For an unfamiliar topic, begin with a query that is specific enough to keep noise manageable, then use the preview and subsequent emails to decide whether to broaden the query or change its filters.
Manage or change an existing alert
Return to Google Alerts to find and manage your alerts. Google Help directs users to open Settings and select Save to change how alerts are received. Google News Initiative also describes email grouping for combining multiple alerts. Since interface labels can change, follow the controls shown on the current page.

What Google Alerts can—and cannot—tell you
Google Alerts sends email notifications about new results for a topic in Google Search. It is useful for keeping an eye on a query, but it should not be treated as exhaustive website-change monitoring: an alert does not promise to detect every site update, every newly published page, or every web mention. No published coverage, speed, or accuracy statistic is established by the official materials cited here.
