To set up an eSIM on a new iPhone, connect the phone to Wi-Fi, then choose the activation method your carrier offers on the Set Up Cellular screen. You may transfer a line from a nearby iPhone, install a carrier activation, scan a QR code, open a carrier link or app, enter details manually, or ask the carrier to move a number from Android. If you have already finished iPhone setup, go to Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM. The exact choices depend on your iPhone model, iOS version, carrier, country or region, and whether the line is eligible for eSIM.

What do you need before setting up an eSIM?

An eSIM is a digital SIM built into the iPhone, so there is no plastic card to insert. Apple supports eSIM on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later models, but the carrier and regional model must also support eSIM service.

  • A compatible iPhone: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or any later model, subject to regional model rules.
  • A carrier that supports eSIM: Activation methods and eligibility vary by carrier and country.
  • Internet access: Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a personal hotspot during activation.
  • Current software: Install the latest iOS version available for each phone. Quick Transfer requires iOS 18.4 or later on both iPhones.
  • Account access: Have the carrier account credentials, account PIN or password, and any activation QR code or link available.
  • Device information for support: If activation fails, the carrier may ask for the iPhone’s IMEI and EID.

Apple has special model rules for mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao. An iPhone bought in one region may not have the same eSIM capability as a model sold elsewhere, so confirm the exact model and your carrier’s local support before relying on a particular activation method.

Which eSIM activation method should you use?

Use the option displayed by your carrier on the iPhone. A nearby iPhone usually offers the quickest self-service transfer, while Android transfers and unsupported carriers generally require carrier assistance.

How do I transfer an eSIM from an old iPhone with Quick Transfer?

Quick Transfer moves an eligible cellular plan from the old iPhone to the new one without requiring a QR code. Keep both phones close together and do not erase the old phone until you have tested the new line.

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and follow setup until Set Up Cellular appears.
  2. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.
  3. Choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone, or select the cellular plan offered for transfer.
  4. Place the old iPhone nearby, unlock it, turn on Bluetooth, and make sure it is signed in to the same Apple Account required by the transfer prompt.
  5. Approve the transfer on the old iPhone. Enter the verification code if either phone requests one.
  6. Wait for the new iPhone to show that the plan is active. Complete the remaining setup screens.
  7. Make a test call and check cellular data before wiping or trading in the old iPhone.

When the cellular plan activates on the new iPhone, the previous SIM is deactivated. The old phone may still contain personal data and apps, but its transferred line will no longer provide service through that SIM.

What if Quick Transfer does not appear?

The absence of the option does not necessarily mean the iPhone is incompatible. The carrier may not support Apple’s transfer flow, the phones may not meet the Bluetooth or Apple Account requirements, the software may be too old, or regional rules may limit the method. Use the alternative offered on the same screen, such as a QR code, carrier link, or carrier app, or ask the carrier to activate the line.

How do I activate an eSIM with a QR code?

A carrier QR code installs the plan through the iPhone’s cellular setup flow. Use the code supplied by the carrier, not a screenshot or code intended for another account.

During initial iPhone setup

  1. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi or a hotspot.
  2. At Set Up Cellular, tap Use QR Code.
  3. Position the carrier’s QR code in view of the iPhone camera and follow the prompts.
  4. Confirm the plan details, tap the option to add the cellular plan, and wait for activation.
  5. Test a call and cellular data after setup finishes.

After setup is complete

  1. Open the Camera app and scan the carrier QR code.
  2. Tap the detected cellular plan notification.
  3. Tap Continue, then Add Cellular Plan, and follow the carrier’s instructions.

On iOS 17.4 or later, you can also press and hold a QR code displayed in the default email app or browser and choose Add eSIM. This is useful when the carrier emailed the code to the same iPhone and you cannot point the camera at a second screen.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume

  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How do carrier activation, links, apps, and manual entry work?

These methods all install the same type of digital plan, but the carrier controls the screens and information required. Follow the option that appears for your account rather than trying to force a different method.

Carrier activation notification

Some carriers send a notification such as Carrier Cellular Plan Ready to Be Installed. Tap Continue in that notification and complete the prompts. If the message arrives while you are still setting up the iPhone, it may appear as the cellular step in the setup assistant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Carrier website link

Choose the carrier link option when the provider sends a secure activation link by message or email. If, after setup, a banner says Finish Setting Up Your Carrier’s Cellular Plan, tap it to continue on the carrier’s website. Sign in only through the carrier’s genuine message or its known website, and do not forward an activation link intended for your account.

Carrier app

Install the carrier’s official app when the setup screen directs you to it. Sign in, select the eligible line, and approve the eSIM installation when prompted. Keep the app open until the iPhone confirms that the plan has been added.

Manual entry

If the carrier gives you server and activation information instead of a QR code, open Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM after setup and choose Enter Details Manually. Enter every value exactly as supplied by the carrier; a single missing character can prevent activation. If the carrier did not provide manual-entry values, do not guess them—request the correct instructions.

How do I move an eSIM from Android or another non-Apple phone?

A direct Apple Quick Transfer is designed for an eligible nearby iPhone. Moving a number from Android or another non-Apple phone generally requires the carrier to provision a new eSIM on the iPhone or provide a supported cross-platform transfer.

  1. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi and open the cellular setup screen.
  2. Choose the carrier-assisted transfer option if it is displayed.
  3. Otherwise, contact the carrier and state that you are moving the existing number to an iPhone eSIM from a non-Apple phone.
  4. Complete the carrier’s identity and account verification. The carrier may send a QR code, activate the plan remotely, or direct you to its app or website.
  5. Install the plan on the iPhone and test service before removing the line from the old phone.

Because the carrier controls cross-platform eligibility, the exact screens and timing differ by provider and country. Ask whether the old phone must remain powered on during the transfer and when its SIM will be deactivated.

How do I set up an eSIM after I have finished iPhone setup?

You can add a cellular plan at any time from Settings; you do not have to erase the iPhone and start over.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
  4. Choose the available method: a listed plan, Transfer From Nearby iPhone, Use QR Code, a carrier app or link, or Enter Details Manually.
  5. Follow the onscreen and carrier prompts.
  6. After installation, confirm that the line is present and enabled, then test a call and cellular data.

If you see Finish Setting Up Your Carrier’s Cellular Plan in Cellular settings, tap the banner and complete the carrier’s web-based activation flow.

How can you verify that the new eSIM is working?

Verification takes only a few minutes and can reveal whether the problem is activation, coverage, or a disabled line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Open Settings > Cellular and confirm that the new line appears.
  • Check that the line is turned on and assigned as the line you intend to use for calls and data.
  • Look at Control Center for the carrier name and cellular signal.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and load a webpage to test cellular data.
  • Place a test call and, where relevant, send a text message.
  • Keep the old phone available until the new iPhone passes these checks, especially when the transferred number is needed for account verification.

Why will an iPhone eSIM not activate?

Most failed activations come from a missing network connection, an ineligible plan, outdated software, a disabled line, or a carrier-side error. Work through these checks in order before requesting a replacement QR code or resetting the phone.

1. Confirm the connection and plan

  • Connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network or hotspot.
  • Confirm that the carrier account has an active eSIM-eligible plan.
  • Check that the QR code, link, or app flow belongs to the correct phone number and account.

2. Update the iPhone

Install the latest iOS version compatible with the phone. If you are using Quick Transfer, both iPhones must meet the iOS 18.4-or-later requirement. Restart the setup attempt after updating.

  4. Restart the iPhone and check the line again.

4. Check for carrier-settings updates

Go to Settings > General > About and wait briefly. If an update prompt appears, install it, then retry activation.

5. Contact the carrier with complete details

If the line still will not activate, give the carrier the exact error message rather than a general description. Have your phone number, account PIN or password, iPhone IMEI, and EID ready. The carrier can confirm eligibility, invalidate and reissue a QR code where necessary, correct an account mismatch, or complete activation on its side.

What regional and model limits affect eSIM setup?

There is no single worldwide eSIM procedure. Apple’s available methods depend on the carrier, country or region, and iPhone model. Some markets sell models with different SIM hardware, and mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao have specific model rules.

Before buying a phone or planning a travel eSIM, verify all three of these details:

  • The exact iPhone model and sales region.
  • The country where the line will be activated.
  • Whether the carrier supports eSIM, and which method it supports: Quick Transfer, direct activation, QR code, app, link, or manual entry.

Apple maintains a carrier directory, but carrier support can change. Check the current listing for your country and confirm with the carrier if the line is a business, prepaid, roaming, or multi-number plan.

What happens to the old SIM and phone number?

For a transferred number, activation on the new iPhone deactivates the previous SIM. This prevents the same cellular line from remaining active on both phones through the transferred SIM. Keep the old iPhone powered on until you have confirmed calls, texts, and data on the new device, then follow the carrier’s instructions for recycling, returning, or erasing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you use more than one number, review each line during setup and label them carefully so calls and mobile data use the intended plan. Apple identifies multi-number transfer as requiring iOS 26 or later; the carrier must also support the transfer configuration.

What is the safest setup sequence for a new iPhone?

The least disruptive approach is to prepare both phones and the carrier account before starting, then test service before changing anything else.

  1. Confirm the model, region, carrier support, and iOS requirements.
  2. Keep the old phone nearby, charged, unlocked, and connected if you plan to use Quick Transfer.
  3. Collect the carrier QR code, link, app login, or manual details before opening setup.
  4. Connect the new iPhone to Wi-Fi.
  5. Use the activation path shown under Set Up Cellular.
  6. Wait for confirmation, then test a call and cellular data.
  7. Only after testing, erase or trade in the old phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install the same eSIM QR code on two iPhones?

Treat a carrier QR code as account-specific activation information, not as a reusable copy for multiple phones. If the code has already been used or the transfer was interrupted, ask the carrier whether it must issue a replacement rather than repeatedly scanning the original.

Do I need Bluetooth for every eSIM method?

Bluetooth is a Quick Transfer requirement because the two nearby iPhones communicate during the move. QR-code, carrier-link, carrier-app, and manual-entry activation use the internet and carrier systems instead, so Bluetooth is not the defining requirement for those methods.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Can I activate an eSIM without Wi-Fi?

The new iPhone generally needs Wi-Fi or a hotspot while it downloads the carrier profile. A hotspot from another device can satisfy that connection, but cellular service from the not-yet-activated line cannot be relied on for the initial installation.

Why does my iPhone show signal but calls still fail after eSIM setup?

A visible signal does not prove that the correct line is selected for voice service. Review the Cellular settings for the line used for calls, check that the plan is enabled, and contact the carrier if the number itself is not provisioned correctly.

Will an eSIM work when I travel to another country?

International use depends on the carrier’s roaming terms and the travel provider’s support for your exact iPhone model and destination. Confirm regional compatibility and whether the phone is eligible for the intended travel plan before departure.
