Over the Hill supports gamepads on PC, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Its Steam listing advertises “Full controller support,” names Xbox and PlayStation controllers, and says the developers suggest using a controller. Connect one controller before launching the game, then test the per-game Steam Input setting in Steam. If the first setting does not work, switch it, restart the game completely, and test again with every other controller, wheel, and joystick disconnected.

There is no single Steam Input choice that is guaranteed for every model. Native Xbox support worked for at least one player after Steam Input was disabled, but that report is a troubleshooting lead rather than a universal rule. The reliable approach is to test both modes in a controlled order.

What controller support Over the Hill provides

The game-specific Steam listing identifies three important points: full controller support, Xbox controller support, and PlayStation controller support. It also recommends a controller as the preferred way to play. That makes an Xbox or PlayStation pad the clearest starting point on a Windows PC or a SteamOS/Linux installation.

Steam Input can translate many Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and third-party controllers into a layout a game can read. However, Steam Input is an input layer, not a guarantee that every controller and every game build will behave identically. The controller’s connection type, operating mode, firmware, Steam Input state, and the current Over the Hill implementation can all affect detection and button mapping.

Over the Hill’s launch input focus is keyboard and mouse plus gamepads. Steering wheels and force feedback are not part of the launch build, and no confirmed future date has been published for those features. A wheel may appear to the operating system or Steam while still being outside the game’s supported launch input path.

Steam lists Funselektor Labs Inc. as the developer and publisher, supports Windows and SteamOS + Linux, and gives October 14, 2026 as the release date. Menus can change with later game or Steam updates, so use the labels shown in your current Steam client while following the sequence below.

Before you start: prepare one controller

Do the first test with only the controller you want to use. Disconnect other gamepads, racing wheels, flight sticks, and similar USB or Bluetooth devices. Leaving several devices connected can make it unclear which device Steam or the game is reading, and it can cause a different device to receive the first player slot.

  • Connect the target controller by USB or pair it over Bluetooth before opening Over the Hill.
  • Close any other game that could be using the controller.
  • Disconnect extra pads, wheels, and joysticks for the duration of the test.
  • If the pad has a physical mode switch, note whether it is set to Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or a generic mode.
  • Keep the controller connected while you change Steam Input and relaunch the game.

Testing one device at a time is more informative than changing several settings at once. It gives you a clean answer about whether the controller is detected, whether its buttons are mapped correctly, and which Steam Input path produced that result.

Set up the controller in Steam

1. Connect the controller first

Plug in or pair the controller before launching Over the Hill. If you are using Bluetooth, wait until the operating system reports the controller as connected. A controller connected after the game starts may not be picked up until the game is restarted.

2. Open Over the Hill’s per-game properties

  1. Open Steam and go to Library.
  2. Right-click Over the Hill.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Open the Controller section.

Use the per-game Steam Input override shown there rather than assuming the global Steam setting is the one Over the Hill is using. The exact wording can vary slightly between Steam client versions, but the relevant control is the game-specific Steam Input choice.

3. Test the first Steam Input state

If Steam Input is currently enabled, set the per-game override to disabled and close the Properties window. If it is currently disabled, set it to enabled instead. The objective is to test the opposite state, not to assume that enabled or disabled is always correct.

  • Customizable Experience: Includes 2 custom back keys, allowing users to eliminate false triggers and enhance their gaming experience.
  • Immersive Gameplay: Offers pulse type vibration trigger motor and asymmetric vibration grip motor for immersive tactile feedback.

4. Fully restart the game

Exit Over the Hill, wait for it to disappear from Steam’s running list, and launch it again. Changing Steam Input while the game remains open can leave the old input path active, so a full restart is part of the procedure rather than an optional extra.

5. Test basic input

At the title screen or in a menu, press the controller’s directional controls, face buttons, shoulder buttons, and menu buttons. Confirm that the game responds and that the on-screen prompts, if shown, correspond to the controller you are holding. A controller that moves through menus but produces wrong actions has a mapping problem, not a complete detection failure.

6. If necessary, test the other state

If the controller is not detected or the mapping is unusable, return to Library, right-click Over the Hill, open Properties > Controller, choose the other Steam Input state, and restart the game again. Keep all other controllers disconnected while you compare the two results.

Should Steam Input be on or off?

There is no universal answer. The game-specific guidance calls for testing the per-game override in both directions. Steam Input may help a third-party or non-Xbox controller present a layout the game understands, while native support can be preferable when the game already recognizes the device directly.

A Steam Community reply describes one player exposing native Xbox controller support by disabling Steam Input. That is a useful case to reproduce if an Xbox pad is not working with Steam Input enabled, but it is not a promise that every Xbox controller, connection method, or future patch will need Steam Input disabled.

What you observe Next test Why
Controller works with Steam Input enabled Keep the enabled setting and verify all buttons in a short play session. Steam’s translation layer is providing a usable path for that device.
Controller works only after Steam Input is disabled Leave it disabled for this game and reconnect only the working controller when you play. The game may be reading the controller’s native Xbox or PlayStation path more reliably.
Neither setting detects the controller Check the controller’s operating mode and Steam’s advanced controller support options. The problem may be device mode or Steam recognition rather than the game’s per-game override.
Menus respond but buttons are wrong Switch Steam Input state, restart, and retest with one device connected. The controller is visible, but the translation or layout is incorrect.

Do not change the global Steam setting, the per-game override, the controller’s hardware mode, and the connection method simultaneously. Make one controlled change, restart Over the Hill, and record whether detection and mapping improved.

Xbox controller setup

Xbox controllers are one of the two explicitly named controller paths in the game-specific listing. Start with the controller connected before launch and test the per-game Steam Input override.

  1. Disconnect every other controller and input device.
  2. Connect the Xbox controller by USB or pair it over Bluetooth.
  3. Open Steam Library > right-click Over the Hill > Properties > Controller.
  4. Test the opposite Steam Input state from the one currently selected.
  5. Exit and relaunch Over the Hill.
  6. Check menu navigation and several face, shoulder, and directional buttons.

If the Xbox pad is still missing, repeat the same sequence with the other Steam Input state. If one state exposes native Xbox support and the other does not, use the working state for this game. The reported community fix of disabling Steam Input is evidence for trying that option, not a requirement for every Xbox model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a wireless Xbox controller, also make sure it remains connected through the entire restart. If Bluetooth drops during relaunch, Steam may start the game before the controller is available, which makes the test inconclusive.

PlayStation controller setup

PlayStation controllers are also explicitly named in the game-specific listing. Steam Input can translate a PlayStation pad, but the result can differ depending on whether the device is presented in its native mode or through Steam’s translation layer.

  1. Disconnect other pads, wheels, and joysticks.
  2. Connect or pair the PlayStation controller before launching the game.
  3. Open Steam Library > right-click Over the Hill > Properties > Controller.
  4. Choose one Steam Input state, then fully restart Over the Hill.
  5. Test the directional controls, face buttons, shoulder buttons, and menu controls.
  6. If detection or mapping is wrong, choose the other Steam Input state and restart again.

Pay attention to the prompts shown by the game. A PlayStation controller can be functional even when the game displays a different button-label convention; the important test is whether each physical control performs the intended action. The available game-specific guidance does not publish a universal button map for every PlayStation model.

Generic and third-party controllers

Third-party pads often include several operating modes. A switch or button combination may present the controller as Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or a generic device. Identify the mode from the controller’s manual or indicator lights before troubleshooting Steam. The mode determines which support option, if any, Steam should use.

Choose the matching Steam support option

  1. Open Steam and select Steam Settings.
  2. Open Controller.
  3. Select Show Advanced.
  4. When Steam offers support choices, enable the option matching the controller’s mode: Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or the relevant third-party/generic category.
  5. Return to the game’s per-game controller properties and test Steam Input in both states if needed.
  6. Fully restart Over the Hill after each change.

Do not enable every support option simply because they are available. Matching the option to the controller’s current mode reduces the chance that Steam presents the wrong layout or creates duplicate virtual devices.

If the generic pad is detected but mapped incorrectly

First, keep the controller in its current mode and repeat the per-game Steam Input toggle-and-restart process. If that does not help, switch the pad to a different documented mode, enable the corresponding Steam support option, and test again with other devices disconnected. Because no universal button map is published for every third-party model, the correct result must be verified on the actual controller.

If Steam does not see the device

Reconnect the pad before starting the game, confirm that its operating mode has not changed, and revisit Steam Settings > Controller > Show Advanced. If the controller is still absent there, Over the Hill cannot use it through Steam’s input path; resolve Steam or operating-system detection first rather than repeatedly changing the game’s setting.

Fix wrong buttons, duplicate inputs, and missing controls

Wrong action on a button

A wrong action usually means the controller is detected but the selected mapping does not match the device mode. Disconnect other devices, change the per-game Steam Input state, restart the game, and test the same button again. For a third-party pad, verify that its physical mode and Steam’s support option agree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Two controls move the same action

Duplicate input can occur when more than one device is connected or when a controller is exposed both natively and through a translation layer. Shut down Over the Hill, unplug every other pad, wheel, and joystick, then relaunch with one controller. If the duplicate remains, test the opposite Steam Input state after another full restart.

Only some buttons work

Partial input can indicate an incompatible mode or an incomplete mapping. Test the controller as Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or generic according to the device’s available modes, and enable only the corresponding Steam support option. Then repeat the per-game toggle and restart sequence.

The controller works in Steam but not in the game

Steam’s ability to display or test a controller does not prove that Over the Hill is using the same input path. Confirm the device is connected before launch, select the opposite per-game Steam Input state, and restart the game. Keep the test isolated to one controller so Steam does not assign focus to another device.

The controller stops working after changing settings

Exit the game completely after every Steam Input change. If the game was left open, it may still be attached to the previous input path. Reconnect the controller, close Over the Hill, verify the per-game setting, and launch again.

  3. Connect the test controller and confirm its operating mode.
  4. Open Steam Library > right-click Over the Hill > Properties > Controller.
  5. Set the per-game Steam Input override to one state.
  6. Close Properties and launch Over the Hill.
  7. Test menu navigation and a representative set of buttons.
  8. Record whether the controller was undetected, partially detected, or correctly mapped.
  9. Exit the game completely.
  10. Change only the Steam Input state, relaunch, and repeat the same button test.
  11. If neither state works, open Steam Settings > Controller > Show Advanced and enable the support option matching the device mode.
  12. Restart Over the Hill and test again with only that controller connected.

This process separates three different failures: Steam not recognizing the device, Over the Hill not receiving the device, and the game receiving it with an incorrect layout.

What is and is not supported at launch

Gamepads are the supported controller category to prioritize. Xbox and PlayStation pads have the clearest game-specific support statements, while Steam Input provides a possible translation path for Switch and third-party devices. The exact behavior of a particular model is not guaranteed by the generic phrase “full controller support.”

Steering wheels and force feedback are different from gamepads. The launch guidance does not include them, and there is no confirmed date for adding those features. If a wheel is your only input device, a working gamepad or keyboard and mouse is the practical launch-era alternative; changing Steam Input is not a confirmed way to add wheel or force-feedback support.

When replacing the controller is the sensible next step

If a controller is not detected in Steam, repeatedly disconnects, or has an undocumented mode that cannot be matched to Steam’s support options, the limitation may be the device rather than Over the Hill. A compatible Xbox-style wireless controller is a direct replacement category for a missing, unreliable, or unsupported pad. Look for a controller explicitly identified as compatible with PC and capable of presenting an Xbox/XInput-style connection.

Before buying anything, complete the one-controller test and try both per-game Steam Input states. That avoids replacing a working controller when the actual issue is a stale game session, a conflicting second device, or a mismatched third-party mode.

Quick checklist

  • Controller connected before Over the Hill starts.
  • Only the device under test connected.
  • Per-game path opened through Library > right-click Over the Hill > Properties > Controller.
  • Both Steam Input states tested separately.
  • Game fully exited and restarted after every Steam Input change.
  • Third-party mode identified as Xbox/XInput, PlayStation, Switch, or generic.
  • Matching option checked under Steam Settings > Controller > Show Advanced.
  • Wheel and force-feedback expectations kept separate from gamepad support.

The Bottom Line

For the highest-probability setup, connect one Xbox or PlayStation controller before launch, test the per-game Steam Input override in both directions, and fully restart Over the Hill after each change. Keep every other controller and wheel disconnected while testing; for third-party pads, match the device mode to Steam’s advanced controller support option.
